“You know, it's been three weeks now,” the dark-haired man began, his voice doing wonders to help Clover dislodge his heart from his throat.

Those eyes turned away, settling on the darkened world outside as he leant back into the seat, giving nothing away on his face. Two dark silver helix earrings, and a simple silver cross at his lobe. He could see them so clearly from close up.

“Courteous thing would be giving me your name.”

The brunet had to blink a few times to bring himself back to his senses. Maybe duck a quick glance to where the man usually sat and perhaps bite at the edge of a lip to remind himself he hadn't nodded off or was hallucinating. No, no he really was here. Chatting to him. Or at the very least calling him out for not chatting to him.

“You, ah...” He swallowed, turned back to the man. Pale red eyes awaited him calmly, that expression still a neutral mask.

“You noticed.”

There was an almost nonchalant shrug at his stammering, and the barest hint of a smirk upon those lips.

“You're not subtle,” came the instant reply.

the fact that qrow calls it an "assignment" is what gets me. this is the point of time that glynda should have already arrived to vacuo with help she went looking for—by the time team rwby + jaune return, the ships from all the kingdoms are there already—so it can't be that, and if it was somehow related to this search for help... why not just say so? "tai's still looking for help" is all it needs.

but no. he has his own assignment that keeps him away from vacuo. he left patch for a mystery mission after beacon's cct tower had been broken into, and once again sometime after the breach had happened. he's got to look after "some things", an explanation why he can't go after ruby even when he wants to, why he didn't leave when yang did.

what could be more important? what requires such secrecy that it's an assignment with no further explanations?

all the maidens are accounted for with the mystery girl in the secret meeting likely being the summer maiden—and if she isn't, she's still in vacuo, not in vale or patch.

all that is left is the mystery of where the crown is, and when beacon, the place their enemy excepts to find the relic at is compromised, tai starts going on missions again; when everyone is in vacuo, tai is still in vale / patch.

he is the dragon guarding the treasure. there's no other reason to point his absence if it wasn't an important plot point.

Do you think the Nuckalevee was a proper threat? If not how would have you improved it?

Yes, I think it was, especially for the time. Let's look at its design. The bottom half of the Grimm is a massive horse, which gives it an edge in both speed and strength. Heck, I'm pretty sure Jaune was the only member of the team who could have held up the monster like that. The top half is a horned humanoid with long, extendable arms and a screech attack to stun anyone too close.

To be honest, the point of every Grimm is to be a threat that everyone wants dead and gone. This devil/demon Grimm fits very well into this standard. I mean, just looking at this thing gives me the creeps, which is another factor in its favor as it inspired fear from the team, especially in the two that were haunted by this monster in the first place.

Now, I will be fair and say that the team wouldn't have struggled this much if it weren't for a few factors already going on in the team. First, Qrow, the one with the most experience compared to the others combined, is on death's door from his fight against Tyrian Callows. Second, Pyrrha had recently died and her death had an effect on everyone, most of all on Jaune, who was using a weapon he wasn't fully used to yet. And last, as I said before, Ren and Nora are now reliving the nightmare that haunted them all those years ago, with the former going into a blood-rage that almost gets him killed. It was only through Nora knocking sense into Ren that the team was able to finally come together as Team RNJR ("It's JNRR!") and avenge the deaths of Kuroyuri, most notably Ren's parents, in one of the most satisfying Ren moments we have ever seen.

No notes for improvement, but I'm sure somebody in the comments will have something.

vacuo, and in particular shade, is so funny. the contrast, man. you had time to build a wall to separate shade with that massive yard from the rest—and the buildings don't even come close to the wall!—but couldn't built one around the rest of the city?

So this week really got away from me both writing and reading wise, so I've still got a bunch of catching up to do. But I did want to still boost my huge Loving Anyway chapter from a few years ago it since missed ever being a part of an FGW.

(ignore it not being day 6 anymore, I was at work from 9am-8pm yesterday and then forgot until now to post...oops.)

ozpin gave the branwens shapeshifting powers not only to gather information about salem's plans, but to also search for the maidens when their hosts became unclear. the former we've seen plenty of, but the latter is a thread left hanging. . . unless: "she was scared when we found her!" ("which 'we' are you referring to?")

gretchen lost her life on a training mission; this statement from ozpin is not treated as a lie, but he never says how she lost her life. raven says that no matter what training she put spring through, she never learned. "what i did—['wasn't personal'] it was mercy!"

gretchen was only a child. "she wasn't ready". spring was weak, not "cut out for this world", and would have been hunted her entire life (it was mercy). ozpin letting unprepared kids into beacon wouldn't be new: jaune hadn't unlocked his aura, had no idea what a landing strategy was, and still, yeeted he was.

(not only does aura need to be unlocked, but also trained and engaged; oscar learned it the hard way getting punched by ruby with ozpin only reminding him after that he forgot to engage his aura instead of telling him sooner, because "this method makes you less likely to forget.")

(gretchen wasn't ready. spring was weak and not cut out for this world; which world? the world of huntsmen and huntresses? of maidens? there are plenty of civilians with no aura, but being a huntress or a maiden would be a death sentence without one.)

the tribe send raven and qrow to beacon to learn how to kill huntsmen; another thread left hanging. not that it necessarily needs to be tied into the plot, but... this is how raven was raised. trained, to kill.

was it mercy? perhaps it was frustration bubbling through, when spring, no matter how much training she was put through, wouldn't learn, and raven reverts to the harshness she was raised in, how she was trained. perhaps spring forgot to engage her aura at the worst plausible moment (she wasn't ready). perhaps it was a combination of both.

and that's how gretchen tragically loses her life on a training mission.

and that's why raven leaves; not only because she's now the spring maiden, but because she's terrified, afraid of what she might do to yang if she loses control again, be it due to anger or frustration.

raven shows concern towards yang ("and... uh... what about... you're just going to leave them?"), but she's not there. she left and anyway, summer is better at that life, better than she was.

"all i care about is my tribe—my family. this is a burden, not a honor." it might be vernal who says this, but in the end, these are raven's words.

and just like qrow (you don't want the burden of my name), raven thinks that the best for her family... is to stay away.

That was what he had returned from the bath to see last night. It made him laugh, feel better, to have something else to focus on. Something soft and teasing, downright affectionate in its own way. Infectious. Chasing out darker thoughts to take their place and let him catch his breath. Relax. Apparently enough for sleep to claim him without much of a fight, if his half written reply full of typos is anything to go by. He deletes it and begins to type out something new.
