I just wanted to update on what’s going on with my life lately. I am still in school currently with a 4.0 gpa doing pretty well even though I still have a long road ahead.
I got promoted at my job I am on the clinical team and handling a lot more diverse roles. I’m involved in treatment planning, assessments, and a lot of different things in the mental health facility I work in. My degree in Korea directly helped me get this position.
I still speak Korean. I have kakao chats with my Korean classmates who are my friends still and we talk almost everyday. I do still consume media and read books in Korean as well. I am slowly learning Japanese and mandarin over again from scratch but it’s a slow process because my life is really busy
I joined a book club, I do ballet regularly and even danced in the nutcracker and soon Snow White. I’ve been going to the gym, and I’m pretty much doing really well.
I do think I’ll come back to this account soon when I can give a bit more time to Japanese and mandarin. I also plan to go back to studygram though I still can’t access my old account 😭😭😭 just about timing
But I’m doing well. And I hope if you’re reading this you’re doing ok too

Heading back to school October 9th for the last time. As y'all know my degree doesn't transfer over well from Korea to US. It does allow me to work in the mental health care field as a specialist like I do in my current job but I have to work under another therapist versus being on my own. The pay is also less than if I was licensed. So I got accepted into a counseling program here, I also got a nice scholarship. I made sure my degree was slightly different than the one I already did so I can just add experience and specializations versus repeating all the same course work. I'm pretty excited tbh . It's been a year since I left school so basically I took a nice gap year hahaha

The academic journal publication that I have been working with my professor in Korea for over a year now, is going to be presented at a conference soon and then I was told it will be published most likely in an Korean academic journal. I, black girl from America who mostly taught herself Korean,is soon going to have a co written psychological research publication in Korean for other Korean college students to reference when they do their papers/thesis. Like as hard as I am on myself I can't wait for this to be published I'm going to get a copy and probably frame it. I am so proud of myself. I feel like things slowly but surely are coming together

It's taken some time but I have finally gotten a job in my field of study. I'm going to be working in a mental health care facility as a mental health care specialist for teens up to age 17. I start training on monday and I'm extremely excited.
It's going to suck to not get to spend time at work everyday speaking Korean to my coworker or Spanish for that matter but I'm going to eventually pick up my studies in Korean through private lessons online and continue on with Chinese once my finances get a little bit better. It's very important to me I do not lose my Korean skills because I worked extremely hard for years to get as good as I did. And I know from first hand if you don't use it you lose it
Besides that I'm just slowly working on meeting my goals. I also am figuring out what I want my life to look like going forward this second half of the year. I have a lot im excited about. But let's see what happens ..I hope you all reading this are doing well also

Hi all! I am still alive and I'm doing well. I've been back in America for just over 6 months now. I'm living in a house with two of my best friends who are like family. I'm working though not in my field or related to it currently for a few reasons. One I'm not licensed in the state I live in. It takes actually a lot of work and time (including having lived in the state for a year) before I can. And possibly more school which we don't know yet. I am currently working with professors from my university back in Korea to publish academic journals based on my thesis. Besides that I'm taking ballet, going to the theatre, traveling a bit, and just starting life completely over from scratch. There's been so many ups and downs since I've been back. That is natural anytime you move and major life events happen. And no I don't have everything figured out yet future wise. I may not ever work in my field (especially if I need to do a lot more school because I don't want anymore student debt) . But I'm a lot happier and a lot healthier.
As far as language studies go. I still speak Korean regularly. I have a Korean coworker who's learning English, and my friends/classmates from grad school and I still use our Kakao group chats regularly. I will def need to refresh on vocab and stuff because my writing is starting to get bad. I speak Spanish daily as well so my brain kinda mixed the two. I haven't picked back up Chinese or Japanese yet but I do plan to. There's just some other life stuff I need to focus on right now before I could even think of trying to do language studies again
But that's basically it. Just a lot of discovering myself and what I want since life didn't go as planned. But also enjoying reinventing myself. I can't get back into my Instagram for some reason I tried a lot. But tbh I do and don't miss studygram. And I may comeback here once I do start studying again but for now I don't have much to contribute to the community.
I'm grateful for everyone though who did follow me for so long and still sticks around. I hope you all are doing well

Just a quick update for everyone I have been pretty busy since my scholarship is officially over. I am returning to the US really soon and going to be in a completely new city, starting over from scratch. I’m both scared and excited. I couldn’t stay in Korea longer for many reasons but the major one being my family needs me back and family comes first. Having parents who are older and unhealthy I need to think about them first. Besides the stress of packing and figuring out life I’ve had fun the past few weeks. I went to amusement park (and fed alpaca!) , baked cookies with friends, did karaoke, travelled a bit, fangirl a lot. I also got to meet one of my ultimate bias kpop groups and film some content with them. My birthday was Tuesday and I spent it with my friends/classmates and it was really nice. I’ve made some really good memories despite the struggle I’ve had here. I do plan to keep up studying Korean because my friends don’t speak English so I have to (they made me promise) I don’t know what I plan to do about Japanese or Chinese though. It’s really going to depend on what 2023 looks like. I want to spend the last few months of the year getting settled and figuring out adulting in america again (it’s been years and the world has changed). I hope everyone reading this is doing well also

Where to begin when reading native novels to work on reading comprehension?
So, you've made it to the point where you'd like to branch out and read some novels and children's books in Japanese? Then you've come to the right place! Let's talk about three helpful publishers (Kodansha, Kadokawa, and Shueisha) that can make reading native materials less daunting!
The Kodansha Aoitori Bunko Books (青い鳥文庫) were created and published by Kodansha with elementary schoolers in mind, so almost all kanji has furigana on it. The text is larger and there's normally a bit more spacing in between it (like our children's chapter books in English). Just like other children's chapter books, there are occasional photos included. Aoitori Readers include both original series as well as some translations of international literature (i.e., Little Women, Murder on the Orient Express, Sherlock Holmes, etc.). There are also some adaptations of other series はたらく細胞 (Cells at Work) Those books have blue around the cover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Kadokawa Tsubasa Bunko Readers (角川つばさ文庫) operate on the same concept, except the series are normally on a more advanced level. With this in mind, they may use more advanced grammar than the Aoitori series. There are original series, but sometimes books/series for a higher comprehension levels will be adapted into Tsubasa Bunko Readers. This includes popular Japanese novels and series as well as international classics (i.e., Chronicles of Narnia, Pippi Longstocking, Anne of Green Gables, etc.). For adaptations of Japanese novels and series, there will be the "regular" version of the novel and then the Tsubasa Bunko version bc it's the same kanji, same grammar, same words. It'll also supply the furigana for those kanjis and might give little annotations or some photos here and there. For example, the award-winning novel 夜は短し歩けよ乙女 (The Night is Short, Walk on Girl) by 森見 登美彦 (Morimi Tomihiko) has both the "regular" publication and the Tsubasa Bunko version. Tsubasa Bunko Readers have green around the cover. Click on the links to get a preview of each version to compare and contrast.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Shueisha Mirai Bunko Books also operates the same. There are adaptations of manga series (like Kaguya-sama: Love is War and Demon Slayer) as well as original series. Mirai Bunko Readers have orange around the cover.

If you're worried about attempting to read any of these on your own, come suggest some of them for us to read together at the Seitokai Bookclub! (And even if it doesn't get selected immediately, someone might be interested in being a reading buddy with you :D).
Happy reading!

July is more than half way gone and I’m just a few weeks from returning back home to the US after living and studying here in KR for years. While part of me is sad and also really scared, the other part of me is extremely excited for what is to come and what I want to do with the rest of my 2022.
I’m spending the rest of my time here really focusing on myself, my family and preparing for this huge life transition and tbh it most likely will be that way for the remainder of the year. I have a lot of things that absolutely need to be my top priority that don’t relate to studying (which is at the bottom of the list tbh)
That being said I’ve decided to put this account on hiatus and there is a very big chance it could stay that way until possibly winter time. I’ve been here since 2016 and I appreciate everyone who’s followed me at any point throughout this time.
I may pop in and give some life updates on things that are happening as I’m making this transition and I’m considering how I want to approach this account going forward. Unlike Instagram where I have to stay in “niche” tumblr kinda makes it easy to just do whatever you want idk really know as I have a love hate relationship with social media platforms but while I’m taking a break and getting my life together it’s just easier to go on hiatus and not feel this stress to post. So yeah.
Besides that I still will be checking out you guys posts and I still will respond to dm and other things just I don’t personally have anything I feel like I want to post or say for the time being. I’ll be back fully at some point with thestudyingnightowl2.0 hahaha thank you again everyone 🥰

I had absolutely no image for this post so I found a meme that made me giggle (thank god I’m not an influencer, or worried about my feed being aesthetic 😂). This is just me getting ramble thoughts out my head. So I’ve been trying to figure out if I’m going to put Japanese back on hold (for the 8495837 time) because to be really honest kanji and Chinese characters are both confusing me and I don’t have the energy to really focus so much on trying to figure out how to keep myself from getting confused. I’ve got two chapters left in my HSK 2 book and then I plan to stop and focus on getting rid of my reliance on pinyin which I didn’t realize was as bad as it was until I tried to read something without it 🤡. But I can’t do that and Japanese at the same time. I mean I could but since I’m supposed to keep my studying to really the bare minimum while I recover from burnout I don’t think I’m going to. I do think I want to keep up reviewing hiragana and katakana and maybe listening to some stuff on YouTube so I don’t lose what I already learned (not even half way through n5) but I think I will either focus on conversation and listening, versus reading and writing or put it on hold. Is there actually Japanese materials that focus on this? I’m about to age myself here but back in the day there use to be like cds and stuff where you just learning conversational skills, is that kinda stuff still in existence ? Any thoughts or opinions more than welcome

It’s finals week here at my university and I along with my friends in my department are doing exam proctoring for the undergrad students. I actually like doing this because it is something that is easy to do but also is helpful to professors and we get paid hahaha. Tonight after we finished we went out with the professor to eat and the food was so good. I had like 3hrs of sleep but getting to meet and talk with my friends was nice. I’ll proctor one more exam next week and then the semester for my uni is over. Besides that I’m still working on personal research projects I’ve been involved in which has been nice

How to make your LinkedIn profile stand out and how to connect with others.
I accidentally deleted this anonymous question. Here is my response, hopefully you see it anon. ✨
Your profile photo:
You want a professional photo that best show cases your personality. It’s how people are introduced to you and it governs their impressions from the start. The photo should be well lit with little to no distractions in the background.
It goes without saying but your outfit should be beautiful but work appropriate. Wear colours that best compliment your skin tone and make you look radiant. Avoid wearing distracting patterns, solid colors work best.
Keep your makeup simple and elegant.
Lastly ensure in your settings that your profile photo is visible to all LinkedIn members, you want recruiters to be able see your profile photo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Headline: A great headline should
Show recruiters who you are
Show what you can do for them
Use role specific keywords so that you appear in search suggestions
Examples of good headlines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LinkedIn summary and about section:
Your LinkedIn profile is your resume and it should be formatted as such, make your LinkedIn summary keyword-rich.
Keep in mind recruiters search for a combination of job titles, skills, and other keywords to find the right candidates.
Learn and understand your audience to identify what they are looking for.
Review job descriptions that interest you and take note of recurring hard skills and keywords that you think recruiters would want to look for. If applicable to you and your career goals, add these words to your LinkedIn summary and profile.
Your LinkedIn summary is the perfect place to add context to your career trajectory, show off your accomplishments (add specific data and awards), and dig into what makes you great at your job.

Job Experience:
Focus on showing your impact in the role rather than just highlighting your responsibilities, use your bullet points to share the problems you were presented with, the actions you took, and the positive results it brought the business. Exemplify this by making use of metrics as well.
Examples of impact statements:
Coordinated with the marketing team to form a 10-person group for a new product launch that resulted in $50,000 in company revenue and greater synergy between both departments.
Surpassed annual sales goals by over 35% for four consecutive years using active listening and communication skills to better understand customer needs.
Analyzed market trends to launch five new products within a year that resulted in a 30% profit increase for the company, up from 10% from the year prior.
Education, License & Certifications:
Include information on all your formal educational training, it’s especially beneficial when aside from formal educational training you have additional certifications on hard skills.
Key Skills:
I already mentioned that recruiters input specific skills or keywords into complex queries to find candidates in LinkedIn search.
So the skills you list throughout your profile should match the frequency and exact wording found in the descriptions of jobs you’re interested in or have applied for.
Additional Note on optimizing your LinkedIn profile. Change your settings to let recruiters know you’re open for work.
Who to connect with on LinkedIn:
Professionals in your industry.
Professionals in your desired role.
Professionals you’ve engaged with at industry and networking events.
Recruiters and hiring managers in your industry, especially if their profiles mention that they are hiring.
Message templates to use to connect with others on LinkedIn:

Building Your LinkedIn Profile
From the Top:
Professional “Headline”: After your name, this is the first line viewers see. Go beyond simply putting “student.” (Examples: Marketing Intern, X University College Junior or X University Graduate Student Seeking Digital Advertising Positions or Junior Environmental Studies Major at X College).
Photo: This is the first image a viewer will have of you. Be mindful of how you want to project yourself and be sure that it is appropriate for the audience.
LinkedIn URL: Claim your personalized URL and consider including the public URL at the top of your resume, just under your name with your email and phone number.
Summary: Highlight your key work experiences and accomplishments. Include specialties and skills. Keep it concise, specific and keyword rich.
Sample Summary:
As a student, I have devoted my studies to ______, and am seeking employment in the following areas: _______ and _____ . My work as a _____ and ______ complemented my academic coursework at X University and allowed me to develop an understanding of ________. I am excited to apply my strengths in _______ and ________ to the field of ________.
Experience: Include experiences relevant to your career goals. Give a brief description of each position, the dates you worked and the name of the organization, similar to what you have on your resume.
Education: Include, in reverse chronological order, X University and any other schools or programs.
Additional Sections & Information: Add additional sections to your profile, or incorporate this information in your education, experience or summary sections, such as languages, volunteer experiences, courses, certifications, publications, honors & awards, groups and associations, interests, skills and expertise.
Applications: LinkedIn Applications enable you to enrich your profile, such as Creative Portfolio Display, Blog Link, WordPress, Company Buzz.
LinkedIn Groups: Join groups that are of interest to you and you will receive periodic emails and be able to engage with others in the group.
Populate your profile with connections: First search for people you know and send them an invitation to connect. Be sure to customize your invitation as most people won’t accept a generic invitation. Keep in mind online networking does not replace in-person relationship building.
