GUY GROGAN BETWEEN SUNDAYS
Guy Grogan is an award-winning songwriter and one-man-band based in Santa Fe, NM. He sent me his album and I was impressed at the incredible diversity within. His songs span a delicate folk rock, heavy alternative distortion, a dreamy pop and bittersweet downtempo jazz. His lyricism reminds me of Elliot Smith, his instrumentation of Rivers Cuomo, and wraps in with a touch of Dinosaur Jr.
Like his 9 (yes 9) previous albums, Glitter in the Gears, is not genre-specific. Grogan is both a heavy rocker and intimate nostalgic, and he pairs his alter-egos side by side. It is a unique and interesting take when an artists decides that nothing is beyond his territory. It’s both refreshing and interesting to see such characteristics - or as Grogan says, “The Beatles did [it] so well from mid-career on... their work was so wide-ranging. Their records covered miles and miles of musical terrain. I’m not nearly as adept, but it’s a very inspirational model and one that I think will keep me busy for as many years as I have as a songwriter and musician.”
Amongst the array of tunes on the album, I found myself most attached to the Indie Rock tune, “Between Sundays.” It stood out as different from the rest but very comforting. It has a happy-go-lucky feel, bright guitar upstrokes and Guy’s lighthearted croon to tie it all together. Grogran acknowledges and prides himself on his diversity, saying, “Knowing what you sound like is kind of like looking into the mirror…you see yourself, but don’t have a real sense of what you look like to the rest of the world.”

VIDEO: JORDAN ALEXANDER TAKE ME OUT TONIGHT
The lovely Jordan Alexander is one to keep on your radar for the coming year. After Ellen called her, “the next gay pop star” and Diva magazine included her on their list of ones to watch in 2016. Without a typical musical background and as someone who only started performing in 2013, Alexander never expected such a warm welcome into the world of music. The journey began when her girlfriend handed her a guitar and signed her up for the Spectra Talent Competition. To her surprise, Alexander won the competition and left with a newfound inspiration and purpose.
Jordan Alexander conveys that serendipity in her newest video for “Take Me Out Tonight” - and so does her grandma. "She actually shot tequila, smoked weed and skinny-dipped...” Jordan said, “age ain’t nuthin but a number and I’m so blessed to have the world’s coolest grandma!” Jordan now resides in Toronto, Canada, where she befriended and began working with producer, Gerald Eaton (K’naan, Nelly Furtado).
Jordan’s single has a fun and playful vibe, an incredibly catchy hook and a drive to set the body in motion on a good night out. Her sultry voice sticks out with something stylistically different than many others. Aside from having graced the stage with Jess Glynne and Tegan and Sara, Alexander is gaining notoriety as both a performer and a member of the LGBT community. As an active member of her community, she stands for pride and they have returned the support. She will perform for pride celebrations in Toronto and Columbus, Ohio this year.
