LILITH: CHARACTER INTRO
owo what’s this? me making a new aesthetic even though nobody asked?
lilith: her name is a reference to the mythical/religious figure lilith [please refer to the link for more accurate and detailed information] who fought for free will and is considered a bad person for believing in feminism. although i was not thinking about the symbolism when i named her [i never do oops] i think it fits very neatly with her character arc + acts as a fantastic oxymoron to her actual passive, submissive personality.
After people got used to my name, or chose to christen me Lily instead— whichever one they found easier to stomach— they forgot about you, about your supposed chants and hovering hair, your scandalous record and the blood you left to rust under kitchen mats. You never went outside, so there was nobody to disprove these mental accusations. But despite the backlash, I had grown to like my name. It instilled fear where fear ought to be, a coincidental advantage that made me seem like someone I wasn’t.
her narration: she’s our first person narrator. since the story is told retrospectively, lilith is overly conscious of her re-telling, portraying her younger self as exaggeratedly cowardly and vulnerable.
I could’ve been the master of misunderstanding things. I am.
Even my naive self saw the truth: it was as clear as water.
her shadow: she’s been manipulated from a very very young age [she doesn’t figure it out until late in the book]. because of this, she’s a very passive person, and is highly insecure about everything she says and does. she exchanges letters with her father, whom she hasn’t seen since birth and whom she idolises. she wants to make him proud, and would do anything he says, even when it’s extremely detrimental to her own health. unknowing to her, her father is manipulative and this shows in the letters he sends.
I understood his concerns; he only wanted me to be the best I could. He wouldn’t write his letters otherwise. He was far too busy to retain links with someone he didn’t care for.
her appearance: her physical appearance is very reminiscent of her passive phantom-like nature, and she describes herself as an exact replica of her mother, willow, in terms of both person and body. she’s pale-skinned, blonde, grey-eyed and short-ish. here’s a picrew [link here!! the actual picrew doesn’t show the creator’s name] i made after failed earlier attempts that captured her vibe the best.
Tumblr media
Wide grey eyes, honey-blond waves, sharp chins; these were trademarks you got from your parents, and trademarks I inherited from you. I was just your carbon copy: a run-down, monochromatic imitation.
Your eyes held blue shades, your chin was elegant and your hair more silver, like moonlight had bled into them. Your button nose curled at the tip, and your long lashes silhouetted against a rounded face. Beauty didn’t run in our blood. My cheekbones were awry, my lashes choppy, and my nose broad and harsh. My hair curled under my neck like a reverse umbrella. Under my eyes were crescents of unending fatigue. Lines ran across my cheeks— little tokens of my injuries.
her personality: she’s introverted, gentle and passive. she lets things happen to her [never a good thing for a protagonist to do, but gaining agency is the literal character arc] and goes through life like she’s invisible. she’s not exactly kind, nor is she emotional, but she’s also not harsh or callous. she loves others pretty easily, and gets attached to a lot of material things. while i wouldn’t really call her boring, she has a tendency to watch things one step removed, like she’s a spectator instead of an actual participant. she also carries a lot of guilt and anxiety over things she doesn’t have a bearing over.
Shame filled me, collecting at every tip of my skin to weigh me down, the load distributed across starfish-limbs.
a playlist:
so i’ve somehow upgraded my associating-music-with-my-writing skills and now the house plants playlist has more than five songs and also each character has a couple songs of their own!! fun times.
awake & dreaming by lucy daydream
a pearl by mitski
fresh roses by juke ross
in conclusion:
| just wants to be loved and appreciated | kind of dumb in theory but will outsmart you in a quiz | bisexual mess | outdoorsy person | major plant nerd | plays acoustic guitar | prizes her garden | always daydreaming |

Are Ace but there redemption arc isn’t about them learning to love, just learning to be good.
Would it be bad to make all the villains cishet? (I'll have one or two cishet heroes too) because they're the only gender/sexuality not underrepresented in the media and idk if we can afford any more negative lgbtqia+ rep? Sorry

MR&F NaNo Update: Day 2
words written: 2235 today (4428 total)
thoughts so far:
first things first i had to add an autocorrect option to fix “PEtra” to “Petra” because as it turns out, i do that a LOT
i forgot to mention yesterday that i wrote Azami’s intro scene, which was a strong contender for Excerpt Of The Day, and probably the only thing i didn’t hate from yesterday’s session as i’m really happy with how it immediately showcases Azami’s chaotic-ness. i might post the excerpt another time.
today i started a new job so my writing time was greatly diminished (sidenote–people working from home, how do you resist the temptation to write when you’re supposed to be working??!!) but with the help of some sprints i managed to get well past my goal for today!
it also helped that today’s scene was mostly banter, my strong suit 😌
oh, did i mention Finneas works in a plant store now? Finneas works in a plant store now.
excerpt: have some Petra and Finneas banter, as a treat
“Do you know where the neem oil is or not, plant boy?” Petra demanded.
“I don’t even know what that is.”
“How did you even get this job?”
Finneas smirked. “I’m just really good at persuasion.”
“That’s just a fancy way of saying you lied on your resume.”

MR&F NaNo Update: Day 1
words written: 2193 today (2193 total)
thoughts so far:
i’m zooming through the first episode of the series. i’ve gotten the first chapter done today (a bit shorter than i would like it to be but, whatever) and a bit of the second. the moment i hit a wall in this episode, though, i’ll most likely end up skipping around a lot (which i’m predicting will be soon).
i’m actually surprised how much i got done today, considering i’ve been feeling really Blocked these last several months. i think sprinting / just focusing on getting words down and not caring if they’re good helps.
Future Chay is going to hate Current Chay though because a lot of what i wrote is incredibly bad, if not straight up incoherent.
Petra is a lot more Stressed than i intended her to be. she was always meant to be uptight, but not like this lmao.
excerpt (note: this is what my first line looks like right now. i am most definitely not going to keep it as is, but for now it greatly amuses me.)
Petra was already nervous before walking into the last botany lab of the semester, but when she saw a row of plant specimens laid out on the professor’s desk that she did not recognize from her notes, she very nearly freaked the fuck out.
taglist below–just for today, i’m tagging the entire MR&F taglist in this update, but if you want to continue being tagged in these (almost) daily updates, please let me know in a comment, DM or ask (not in the tags as i might miss it)! if you’ve already asked to be added to my nano taglist, no need to ask again :)

We Were Dead, Weren’t We?
A NaNo project
Horror
First Person, Past Tense, Two POV
Trigger Warnings
Gore, violence, body horror, mentions of death, occult, vomiting, paranoia, possible triggering content for body dysmorphia, passing mentions of child neglect. Please let me know if there is ever something I need to add. Horror is meant to be spooky, not triggering.
Themes and Tropes
Found family, trust no one, southern gothic horror, psychological horror, misremembered past, platonic love
Summary
I had hoped my past would have the decency to leave me alone. I spent most of my adult life burying my past, and any spare moments were spent trying to forget. So when I received a letter that seems to have been written by me, to me, from 20 years ago, I’m not impressed. The last thing I wanted to so was unearth my messy history, but when your 11 year old self is begging for help it’s hard to ignore.
Characters
Lilith Rivera: 31, she/her, Private Eye
Carrie Torrance: 30, she/her, Horror Writer
Please send me an ask or message if you are interested in being tagged.

When Magic Died
Once upon a time, in a land far beyond the western horizon, there was an apprentice who was very bored. She lived in a fine palace, and was studying magic, her greatest passion, but her master was an inept and bumbling old man who couldn’t tell one end of a wand from the other, and so she grew terribly disinterested with her daily duties, which included tending to the last bit of live magic in the kingdom and arguing with her greatest enemy, the young and pompous palace academic.
On one such day, shut up in the magician’s tower and feeding the magic, the academic came knocking, thoroughly spoiling an otherwise pleasant morning. The two engaged in particularly feisty banter, this time about whether or not the academic should pursue a courtship with a maiden of the town, as his parents had suggested. This was, unfortunately, an ongoing discussion—the apprentice always asked about the progress of the courtship in order to poke holes in his unfaltering ego, and his retort tended to be that at least he had prospects—but on this day the argument went too far. Upon his suggestion that her general prickliness would subject her to a long and lonely life of her own doing, the apprentice quickly stood, furious, accidentally knocking over the cage in which the magic resided, and when the cage door flung open, the magic within was extinguished.
The apprentice and the academic looked at each other, horrified. Then the academic said, “Not it,” and disappeared down the spiral staircase. Coward that he was.
