On Becoming “Other”
One of the hallmarks of post-initiation growth as a witch is shedding the skin of the person whom you used to be. Becoming simultaneously “more” and “less” - more powerful in your craft and less human for it.
To quote Jim Baker on the nature of magic in a Western paradigm:
“Magic essentially aimed at managing change at the behest of the operator, at influencing the unceasing and inevitable shifting in time of all earthy things from their present state to their future ones. Magic depended on the relationships between the soul of the Universe (the Anima Mundi) and the cosmic spirit (the Spiritus Mundi), and for spiritual magic, the human spirit and the cosmic spirit.”
Now, this covers magic. Witchcraft, while still being classified as a form of magic, has a much more narrow definition from a historical perspective. Witches have long been considered malefic entities, and as several prominent authors (Jim Baker, Gemma Gary, and Dr. Thomas Johnson, to name a few) note: Becoming a witch changes one’s intrinsic identity. This is something unique to witches, where as other magical practitioners such as sorcerers and cunning folk are defined by the skills and knowledge they wield while still maintaining their humanity.
Signing the Devil’s book, flying to a Sabbat, shape shifting, interacting with the wild forces as equals rather than holding power over them by invoking the wrath of YHWH, all eat away at a person’s spirit; it triggers a metamorphosis. Perspectives shift, moral baselines may become altered, temperaments are addressed, and in some cases physical features are molded to reflect one’s spiritual and magical allegiances. I’ve found these changes are often overlooked and minimized in favor of a more…palatable presentation of what witchcraft is assumed to be.
To engage in, practice, and hone magic within the context of witchcraft is to resign yourself to becoming wild and altogether something Else. The trade-off for growth is loss. A snake that has shed its skin may never return, for they have expanded beyond the comfort that once held them.

[Germany, 17th century]
Lavishly illustrated with 56 various amulets and sigils drawn from Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa’s De Occulta Philosophia and Johann Baptista Großchedel’s ‘Magical Calendar’, as well as medieval grimoires and the Clavicula Salomonis, this scroll was designed to invoke powerful spiritual and angelic protections for its owner, 17th-century magician Franz-Anton Buechler.

Actual shit I said while cleansing the house:
Mom: *saying a chant that one of our friends recommended, using a feather to gently waft the sage smoke around the rooms*
Me: *waving sage around* get the fuck out of here this ain't no fucking bed and breakfast. Don't you even THINK about attaching to us either because I know a bitch who will send your ass back to wherever you came from.
My sister in law, watching this go down: what the fuck
Me, continuing: if you're a negative bitch get the fuck out. If you're a chill bitch you can stay, neutrals can stay but you're on thin fucking ice.
