it's kind of interesting that, of all the twisted motherfuckers we encounter in Path of Radiance / Radiant Dawn, it's Lekain who Reyson (he o' heart-reading powers) has the absolute harshest words for

like, for Izuka, Reyson's got:

"Despicable butcher! This forsaken place will be your tomb, and it won't be soon enough"

which is harsh for sure, but, y'know, feels like the sort of thing one yells at a hated enemy

whereas it feels like Reyson can barely comprehend how vile Lekain's vibes are:

"Evil… You are pure evil. I hear it in your heart. How do you even survive?"

has kinda interesting implications for how the heart-reading stuff works tbh

btw, all this political stuff? *that* is why I call Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn "romantic fantasy." a key aspect of that genre was the way it would dig into these types of things, exploring the realities of the situation (or something close) without going full grimdark with it. All the nuance and consideration players are clamoring for in Legend of Zelda (at least in my circles)? The Tellius games have it. That's what makes these games "romantic fantasy," imo. It's not the presence of romance (which is mostly background), it's not even the romanticized view of western medieval times. It's the way it digs in on the interpersonal aspects of the world building, including the politics. Any other game, those aspects I just mentioned in my recent liveblog posts about how Crimea couldn't have ruled Daein as well as itself right after the war would've been ignored or glossed over. Hell, plenty of movies and tv shows wouldn't have gotten into that. But in a Tellius game, I spoke the words, and a moment later they were written on the screen, because the writers were actually thinking about this stuff on the same level as me. I miss that type of writing.
