Been really fed up with the biphobia in the 911 fandom lately, so excuse the slight rant inspired by the latest episode of Ghosts, but if you're 'grossed' out by a ship (Canon or otherwise) because it's outside of what you view as correct, then you are an asshole. Two or more consenting adults in a relationship isn't gross and seeing those relationships on screen isn't a bad thing even if you're not personally invested in the ship.
And liking a gay ship or having gay friends or being another form of queer yourself doesn't give you any more of a right to hate on a type of relationship (much less be disgusted by it) than your average bigot.
#LOUDER FOR THE FOLKS AT THE BACK#FR though OP thank you so much for this post I was feeling so unbelievably frustrated with this fandom after seeing a few#‘but polyamory is ICKY’ responses after last night that truly just disheartened me so much#but you worded this so well and I really appreciate that bc I was struggling to put into words myself how frustrated I was by it#ALSO#I say this for the people I know are genuinely well-meaning but just new to this stuff: bi and poly are two COMPLETELY different things.#you can be both. you can be neither. you can be one and not the other.#but equating the two as more-or-less equivalent is INCREDIBLY problematic & plays into cispatrionormative stereotypes#thinking any m-spec sexuality automatically aligns someone with polyamory is rooted in so much history of bigotry and often violence#& I’ve had for the most part such good interactions w this fandom that I truly hope some of that is just unfamiliarity/newness w this stuff#but it is. really disheartening. & I hope anyone feeling that way uses this as an opportunity to think critically about their preconceived#ideas bc that kind of questioning & opening oneself up is EXACTLY what I think this show at its core is about.#gonna try to put together a post w some resources on history of polyamory & maybe also a few mspec identities soon if I can#as part of a response to this bc again. i genuinely think some people mean well but just aren’t quite there yet.#& everyone deserves access to information regardless of what they decide to do w those resources#but yeah#cbs ghosts#cbs ghosts spoilers

Hetty who dies scared and alone with a cord permanently around her neck, who has nobody there to teach her the ghost rules, who has to learn by herself that the telephone cord is now physically part of her body and she can never be rid of it, it will always be there digging into her, a constant reminder of what she's done, the mistake she made for the sake of her son, who spends a year alone watching the aftermath of her choice thinking she’s permanently doomed herself to a purgatory of isolated punishment, trapped in an even worse solitude than the one she had in life, having to watch the fallout of what she's done until the day that the boys escape from the hole and come up from the basement and save her, breathing companionship and love into her afterlife, and suddenly for the first time she's not alone. I’m FINE

ALSO can we talk about Hetty’s reaction after Flower tells her “You’re a good friend”???
Think about where she was at this point last year—having also just revealed a massive secret, one that almost irrevocably ruined one of her oldest friendships. She’d admitted in Ghost Court that friends were not something she’d ever had in life—something she hasalso just reiterated moments ago to Sam and Isaac, that one of the reasons she felt so trapped and alone and without options at the end of her life was because she had no friends.
Think about how far we’ve seen her come; in season one, it’s huge growth for her that after Jay’s possession, she admits to the other ghosts that she missed them. Or season two, how in a very un-Hetty move she’s willing to swallow her pride and apologize to Nigel (even though she’s sure she isn’t in the wrong!) for the sake of saving her friendship with Isaac. Or even earlier this season, how closely she’s clinging to Alberta in so many of the episodes, because she’s so grateful she got her friend back after being so close to losing her that she doesn’t even want to be physically separated from her.
And then now, she’s just once again revealed a secret she’s kept for well over a hundred years, in order to save Flower. She’s kept this part of herself from everyone for so long, and the very second she sees that Flower is securely out of the hole, she turns her back to everyone to gather herself and then bolts.
Isaac and Sam make her see that, yes objectively she has people here for her now like she never had in life, but Flower coming in and thanking her is when she actually gets to see and experience the reality of how different her existence is now. “You’re a good friend,” she says, and it might be the first time someone has ever said that to her. And Hetty just looks up at Flower so surprised in that moment, and so heartbreakingly hopeful, because I genuinely think that until right then, she really hadn’t considered it like that before; she just knew that Flower was in trouble and that she had to help her whatever the personal cost, because not saving her wasn’t even an option.
So much of the ghosts’ relationships, especially early on, were transactional, and, especially in Hetty’s case, built around enforcing particular power dynamics: accruing a wealth of back rubs, extorting Pete’s TV time before signing Elias’s contract, or any of the countless occasions she brought up her status as ‘lady of the house’. So the fact that she makes this sacrifice that feels like a loss of power to her is in and of itself big; but Flower acknowledging that, and making sure Hetty herself sees it too, by calling her a good friend—it’s a whole different level of meaningful.
She doesn’t just thank Hetty. She makes sure that she sees what her actions mean to her. And Hetty is so taken aback by it, because Flower saying this to her and meaning it is a gift she was absolutely unprepared for; a “good friend” is not something Hetty has ever known herself to be, up until now. But she very badly wants for it to be true.

More thoughts on the Hetty plotline of “Holes are Bad”, put below the cut for spoilers/sensitive content:
Feeling so grateful that the writers didn’t just make Hetty’s death a ‘I was a woman trapped by my circumstances and killing myself to protect my child was So Noble And Brave Of Me’ thing like they hit on how she hoped to protect her son and how she was trapped but then still also made sure to go a step further and have Hetty acknowledge that regardless of if that had actually protected Thomas, she still knows now that she made a bad choice, and that a big part of it was not just her son but that she was so fucking unhappy in life and had no one and did not have the tools to deal with that and made a panicked, desperate decision that has haunted her ever since.
They don’t let it just be a single or easily digestible reason; they don’t give her an easy explanation or out for her choice, they treat it with nuance and such attention to her as a character in a way that I really can’t imagine any other show doing.
Basically, once again our writers are the best.
