We don’t see as much plain coffee these days as we used to. What could be the reason for it? It’s probably because it is very easy these days to brew up a cup of gourmet coffee for your family, friends, and acquaintances. There are now coffee clubs and coffee social areas where coffee is taking on the look of a social group. These meeting places can take place within the shops and community or on the Internet.
Gone are the days when you just went to a coffee shop to get a regular cup of coffee.
This is happening because of an obsession by coffee fans all over America for the gourmet or specialty coffee. These people visit all the coffee specialty stores and order it from catalogs or the Internet. They love grinding the coffee beans themselves. And when they take trips to places like Costa Rica, they look for and bring back the specialty coffees. Now we have “coffee tasting” events much like wine tasting.
There are even interior design products and furniture coming on the market touting a coffee theme — great gifts for the coffee fan.
Coffee had its beginnings as a stimulant in 900 A.D. It has also had its beginnings in a variety of uses such as a medicine and a wine. Nothing is much different today.
Coffee is one of the few untouched products over time but that is quickly changing. People are coming up with all sorts of ways to improve the flavor and aroma and will probably keep doing it well into the future.
And coffee shares a good chunk of the world’s market. It is second only to oil in dollar volume as a world commodity.
People also these days are constantly trying to reduce their caffeine intake. A pound of coffee has half the caffeine as a pound of tea yet we get more caffeine in a cup of coffee? Why? It is because a pound of tea will give us 160 cups of coffee and a pound of coffee only gives us 40. This may disappoint those of you who have to drink decaffeinated coffee but hate the taste of it.
Also, it is interesting to note, that when you grow coffee at high altitudes, the result is less caffeine. This is probably one of the advantages of gourmet coffee in that it is grown at much higher altitudes than the standard grocery store blends.

Go and enjoy a coffee tasting event when you get the chance. You will be happy to see that gourmet coffee is slowly migrating to the classification of “art form.” At one of these events, you could taste up to 2 dozen (or even more) blends. You could even leave as somewhat of a coffee expert. This would definitely be an activity to enjoy if you really like coffee.

The problem with coffee you buy in a store is that you never really know how old the roasted coffee beans were when the coffee was ground, and how long ago the beans were ground—both factors that make or break the quality and flavor of coffee.
Roasted coffee beans are considered fresh for about a month, so the coffee you buy in a store should have been ground from those beans during that time. And the moment beans are ground, the coffee is fresh, but should be used immediately. Vacuum packing does retain much of the freshness, but coffee lovers know that freshly ground from bean to brew makes a better cup of coffee than freshly ground and instantly packaged, to sit on a shelf for who knows how long.
If you’re purchasing whole roasted coffee beans, then the way they’re packaged will tell you something about their age. If there’s no way for CO2 to escape the package, then the beans had to sit for several days before they were packaged. If the packaging does allow for this release, then they were probably packaged immediately and will be fresher, providing you’re able to purchase them right away.
While they’re considered fresh for 30 days, true coffee fans will tell you that 3 days is the window for the best-tasting coffee. After 3 days, the freshly roasted coffee beans will start to lose their aromatic oils. So for the best coffee possible, you can buy green coffee beans and roast them yourself at home.

Mexican Delight
Serves: 1 INGREDIENTS
1 oz Coffee liqueur
1 teaspoon Chocolate syrup
1 each Hot coffee
1/2 oz Brandy
1 each Dash ground cinnamon
1 each Sweetened whipped cream
PREPARATION
Combine coffee liqueur, brandy, chocolate syrup and cinnamon in a coffee cup or mug. Fill to the top with hot coffee. Top with whipped cream

Napoleon Espresso Serves: 2
INGREDIENTS
2 cups Cold water
4 tablespoons Ground espresso coffee
½ Cinnamon stick (3″ long)
3 teaspoon Brandy
3 teaspoon Crème de Cacao
4 tablespoons whipping cream,
chilled Chocolate sprinkles or chocolate curls for garnish
PREPARATION
Prepare your espresso or you can make some really strong coffee. Add your cinnamon to your espresso or coffee and let it soak for a minute or so. Add in your brandy and your crème de cocoa, stir and pour into cups. Top with whipped cream. You can also ass chocolate sprinkles, chocolate curls and add ice cream to for a nice touch.
