Im not italian and honestly have no intentions of working in an italian fashion, but reblogging because I also thought that book was sus and Im glad someone else on here is calling out these authors who are capitalizing on topics that are less written about.
Italian Folk Magic: Open or Closed?
Hi. My name's Star, and I am a Sicilian Catholic and Italian folk practitioner.
I often see the book Italian Folk Magic by Mary Grace-Fahrun circulated as the one source for Italian folk magic. It was a good beginner resource for me just because I could point and say "oh hey my grandparents do that!", but I wouldn't really recommend it beyond that-- mainly because it just... made up a lot of shit? But I digress.
There is a section of Italian Folk Magic that addresses the few reading who are not Italian. It says that they are welcome to practice. Grace-Fahrun compares non-Italians practicing to Westerners liking anime. And... I don't think those two are quite comparable?
First off, Italian folk magic is inseparable from Catholicism. Catholicism is a closed religion. Unlike Protestant denominations, you can't just switch to being Catholic at any time. There is a very specific conversion process-- you must be baptized, take your first Communion/Eucharist, and eventually, be confirmed as a Catholic under supervision of a priest.
Secondly, it does depend on what practice you're talking about. There are three main practices in IFM-- Stregheria, Stregoneria, and Benedicaria.
Stregheria is just some shit someone made up. In "Italian Witchcraft", published 1995, Raven Grimassi claims to be part of an ancient Italian tradition that quickly falls apart if you do any further research. With that being said, I don't see why you couldn't practice it? I just don't understand why you would.
Stregoneria is a modern term. In Catholic Italy, nobody would ever call themselves strege, or witches, as the word has demonic connotations in Italy-- but it is used to describe a very specific hereditary practice. Stregoneria is a tradition passed down very specifically from one practitioner, a maga/mago, to the next. This specific practice is closed, as it's typically passed down through generations.
Benedicaria is closed. It's a very regional combination of herbalism, folk healing, and prayer that you need to be a devout Catholic to practice.
That being said, there are plenty of herb correspondences and superstitions from Italian tradition that you could incorporate into your practice! But that's a post for later.

A Warning to new witches
Reading makes you smarter. But reading does not mean you are smart. This applies to those who read occult texts as well. Just because it is about magic and witchcraft, does not mean you are smart to read it. Be discerning of authors, publishers, and wording. You should not judge a book by its cover but you SHOULD judge a book by its title. be cautious of books using words like ____ Magic(k). The overuse of adjectives to describe types of witchcraft are purely used to make books attract crowds who follow trends. An example would be "Lunar Magick" which is a title to over 200+ books on amazon. They use these names to get your money for very little information. Most of these self published books are plagiarized or just watered down versions of actual grimoires with a historical basis. Be perceptive. And if you struggle to discern if a book will be good or not, ask me! I try to read the shitty throw away books just so I can help educate my mentees on what to NOT do. Know your enemies including bad authors. (Matt auryn is one of these bad authors. No matter how popular "psychic witch" is.

Aaon Bushnell began his livestream and walked toward the Israeli Embassy with an insulated water bottle full of flammable fluid. “I will no longer be complicit in genocide,” he said in his video. “I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest. But compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.”
Bushnell then placed his phone on the ground and walked to the gates of the embassy, where he doused himself in liquid from the bottle. “Free Palestine,” he said, as he struggled to light himself. A law-enforcement officer approached, asking, “Can I help you, sir?” At this point, Bushnell lit himself on fire, screaming, “Free Palestine.”
So I found Aaron Bushnell's reddit and went through his comments/posts. That young man was well read and stable as they can be. Nothing in his writings pointed to someone who was "unstable" or "brainwashed".
He held leftist and anarchist ideals. He belong to the ACAB subreddit. He recognized the evil of the US Military even though he himself was a part of it. He hated TERFS and called out fatphobia. He understood the dangers of white supremecy and the evils of capitalism.
He had a cat. He liked the show fleabag and played elden ring.
Apparently in his will he wants to leave any money in his name to palestinian relief funds. He was trying to find a new owner for his cat.
Rest in peace Aaron Bushnell. The world won't forget & we sure as fuck won't let the media paint you out to be some crazy conspiracy theorist who had no idea what he was doing.

Post Herbalist, Pre Pre-Medical traditional Witchcraft: a Joke but a reality.
Before I hand feed you my BITTER solar-infused coffee-induced rant, let me give a few ( comically self made) definitions: *see notes
Post Herbalist witchcraft: "energy work**" and magics that are performed by peoples with no means, funds, or ability to obtain herbs and knowledge of herbal medicine for magic and health. This loss of knowledge is due to colonization, fear of herbalisms ties to witchcraft, and the push for modern"white medicine. Note*- I fucking hate the term energy work, yet the magic itself is very very real and used by me.
Pre Pre-Medical witchcraft: -Not to be confused with Pre-med schooling in preparation for grad school.- Pre Pre-medical is what I call the average knowledge of modern medicine that the average person can obtain by ways of public K-12 schooling and the internet. Its place in witchcraft is the knowledge of medicine and the dangers of herbs and or anti-vaxx/med dangers within magical communities. In essence, Pre Pre-medical witchcraft is the belief in modern medicine as well as magical healing methods. Not to be confused with holistic healing which is utter bullshit when taught as completely factual in organized religious spaces.
With these definitions explained less blurred in the mind of the greater trad witch community, and ignorant tumblr onlookers, I move on to my spiel.
As a professional witch, conjurer, seer, and drama queen, I struggle to find a home amongst communities that have watered down witchcraft for a younger, whiter, and less informed audience. Gone are the days of nuance and professionalism. Today is now ruled by forever-beginners, eternal-newbs, and influencers turned teachers. With this post I hope to separate the wheat from the chaff and find the cream of the crop.
To practice witchcraft in a time where herbs are expensive yet taught as the only means to perform spells; and at a time when cities and suburbs have ruined free access to native plants; I find myself performing more prayer and power based magics. No longer do i spend money on herbs, candles and the like. Nor do I plan to purchase the land required to grow my own. I invest in verbal charms, prayer, writing, movement, and my own bodily secretions. I jokingly call this "Post herbalist Pre Pre-Medical witchcraft."It is more informed and rooted in history than generic "energy work". And is less concerned with the consumerism that is forced upon modern witches via herbs and more. The joke is the name is so humorously long and ignorant that it kind of works. I expect the internet will love it considering you folks love putting every adjective before "witch" such as "solar witches" and "crystal witches". Although I suspect people looking for such titles do not have the attention span to read this wordy blog post.
In 2020 I challenged myself to go a year without spending a dollar on my magic. Here we are in 2024 and I'm still going. Yes I use plant materials. Yes I buy things for spirit offerings. But no. I don't have a huge cabinet of herbs and candles. I fully rely on my spirits, my witchflame, the land, and my body to produce magic. No money required. I could spend another fifteen paragraphs explaining how to do so. But alas, i don't care to share. As I said, I am done engaging with forever-newbs who are at the same place they started in witchcraft ten years ago.
I hope my short yet long* rant leads you to... something useful
*note: this is actually a very short read. But in the modern internet sphere we are all unable to process information that's not in video format consisting of no more than 2 minutes. so this is a long post nowadays. hehe im really on a soap box today. sorry im so bitter.

A Mini Rant on The Catholic Pentagram
The pentagram much like myself walks two paths. One holy, and one infernal. It is not just a symbol of wicca, witches, satan, or the elements, but one of heaven.
Tumblr media
Amien's Cathedral is popular for its inversed pentagram. In old [folk] catholicism the inverse pentagram represented the holy spirit coming down upon christians. It was seen as ethereal fire and the spirit of god himself. Today many folk catholics make this sign over things to bless them as well as the sign of the cross. Just as the crucifix was on many home altars, the inversed pentagram was too! Do not let the New-Agers and wiccan-lites ruin this symbol for you.
The pentagram as stated earlier was used to represent the five elements in occultism. However there was a time it represented the five wounds of christ. (image from @daught3rsofcain)
Tumblr media
Along with the five wounds, it was believed to be a symbol of the five senses of man. Smell, taste, touch, sight, and hearing. to place the pentagram at the foot of the cross was representative of god giving us life and of god becoming flesh.
As a folk catholic, I enjoy these older mystical ideas of this symbol. but as a trad witch, I enjoy the satanic aspects of the pentagram too. why cant I have both? In my tradition Jesus and The Devil are treated as yin and yang. As Gemini. As Apollo and Artemis. Both have a place at my altar.
As the inverse pentagram represents divinity it is also the devils horns stirring the heavens.
Tumblr media
You can have both. Because they both exist.
rant over.

Anyone who knows me also knows I'm not a grimoire girly. I struggle to keep up with the writings, im not artsy enough to make it pretty, and I'm just not super organized. However, I have to comment this is the best grimoire prompt list I've seen on this app. Although I typically only use the word grimoire for actual traditional witchcraft books, this would make amazing prompts for a folk catholic's "prayer book" or "psalter" which is the proper term for a Catholic grimoire.

I see posts Like this and they are so true. But they never share ideas of How to do this. So I'll tell you. (Without holding your hand fully and giving you a list of spells. Get your own)
Prayer. Verbal charms. Chants.
That's it. If your witchflame is lit, your words are power enough. If not, you Def need outside help such as a proper spirit or the spirit of herbs/nature.
you NEVER need to wait “until you have the money” to start practicing witchcraft. you do not need ANY money for witchcraft. you can have all the money in the world and practice witchcraft every single day without spending a single cent on it. everything you need you already have, inside of you and around you as well.

If you’re finding it difficult to carve out a practice for yourself, you’re just having a normal response. We were never supposed to do this. Polytheism is not an orthodoxy that we can divert to based on dogma and texts. It’s an orthopraxy, the likes of which were always intended to be practiced by the community, the polis, with the guidance of elders and experts. Because of the march of time bringing forced Christianization, colonization, and capitalism enforcing rugged individualism, we’ve been left with little choice but to carve a tiny piece for ourselves.
We’re doing fantastic, considering we’re rebuilding from the scraps and ruins of long gone empires.

How do I connect with local spirits?
Most witches consider local spirits to be a cornerstone of their practice. It's much easier to cast a ward on your home when the local forest spirit will back it up. Ask five witches how to connect to spirits and you'll get seven answers and three arguments.
So I'm going to give you a foolproof answer.
If you live in the united states, your state will have a list of endangered and threatened species. It will also have a list of invasive species. Look through these. There's a pretty good chance that you'll be surprised and find something you've seen before. "I didn't know that was endangered! I've seen that in my grandma's backyard."
Great! You are now that species guardian angel.
Figure out how to protect it. Find out how to spread it. Then do it. It spreads from cuttings? Awesome! Take some cuttings and sprout them, then plant them somewhere.
You don't have anywhere to plant them? That's okay. Get a high-vis vest, pull over onto the side of the highway in a nice spot, plant them, and leave. No one questions the high-vis vest. Someone does? "I'm a volenteer at an endangered species reintroduction program." It's not even a lie, it's just a program of one. Hell, that program may actually exist and you may actually be able to volenteer for it.
"But how does this help me connect with local spirits?" You are actively protecting your local ecosystems that your local spirits are a reflection of. They will appreciate that far more than any other offering you can give.

The Green Devil of the Ozarks: The little green fairy of... moonshine?
It was 2005. I was with my grandfather in an old shop similar to "dick's 5 and 10" outside of Branson, Missouri. This is where The Green Devil caught my eye.
My grandfather frequented little old fashioned stores like this. He loved collecting all kinds of gadgets. Old movie posters, salt water taffy, and soda parlor paraphenalia. It was heaven on earth to him in this little corner of the world that was stuck in an older Ozark time. His house wasn't too dissimilar to a crackerbarrel gift shop. All kinds of wooden toys and dolls. He loved his little knickknacks. But on that day he found it. A copy of an old French absynthe poster with "the little green fairy" smirking at the viewer. He had to have it. It was being sold for $8! frame included! If only the seller knew the true value of it. Or how it's mere existence was breaking so many copyright laws.
Tumblr media
Maurin Quina, as it's named, is a French apéritif advertisement painted by Leonetto Cappiello in 1906. The drink was made illegal soon after its creation. But this poster is now being reused today. It was not well known in the US at all back then. Not even in the 2000's. but my grandfather being a moonshiner, absynthe fan, and art history drop out, knew all about it.
My grandfather was not as religious as the rest of my family. But he sure prayed to God when he was trying to avoid the law. He was selling homemade moonshine without any sort of license or proper knowledge of sanitary practices. It was an arte form he learned from his father that I never had the pleasure of learning.
He decided to hang this new poster up in his storm cellar where he kept his aging bottles of various liquors. Over time it developed A life of its own. My grandfather would kiss his hand and place it on the poster of the little green fairy after every jar was sealed or sales were made. I Don't think he saw this as devil worship so much as just a simple good luck ritual. Not too disimilar to his high school basketball team kissing the image of their mascot before a game. He always practiced these superstitions even though he didn't seem to really believe in them.
Fast forward to today. I'm an Ozark trad witch. So of course I now work with this image as if it is the devil himself. He is a devil that rules spring and summer. Drunkenness, poison, lunacy, fairies, and nature. He is associated with law breaking, alcohol, healing, harming, and fertility. With Easter coming up He is on my mind heavily. A time I feed him red dyed eggs symbolizing the blood of christ and the blood of good Christians. I feed him this with intentions of causing those which share the eucharist to lust. Poisoning the church so to speak. I attend mass in spirit form and dip my blessed turkey wish bone down in the communion wine. The turkey is symbolic of love in the Ozarks. And the wishbone is horned like the stang, and my devil. Midnight mass on Easter is filled with drunkenness and sex. Those consuming this spiritually poisoned wine are consumed with lust for others in the church. An orgy ensues in the great house of God. Only for all members to awaken Easter morning with no memory of the incestuous rituals performed with their brothers and sisters in christ. To do such things in the house of God and not confess them (due to not remembering) is damanble. This is my goal as a witch. To bring the witches Sabbath to the church and to pervert the souls of good men.
By turkey wand and lustful stang I complete my work in the devils name.
A call to the Green Devil:
"Envy is his name. Drunkeness and poisoning are his arte. He is Lord of the little people and plants alike; come little green fairy and bring your lust and your lunacy. Green devil rise from the roots below like a serpent. Green devil come down from the tree tops like a booger in the night who takes its flight. Join me in this witching hour oh beast of the green and hear my call to the wild. By my witches flame may it be so."
Look out for a post on the black and red devils later this year. Our horned one changes with the seasons

The Seven Deadly Sins: sins personified via animism and the church.
The arte of the witch is syncretic with the arte of demons. To usurp and overthrow the oppressor, and to cause sins within the souls of men. How does a witch do this? the Seven Deadly Sins or "cardinal sins" are the answer.
Tumblr media
The image above depicts these 7 sins within the man's heart/soul as being animals. As an animist I can not help but view these animals as being true personification. Symbolism is not a thing to me, but a person. Although I'm sure the creator of this image was very much a good Catholic man who was not an animist, we can still utilize this image today as animists.
In traditional witchcraft it's common to call upon familiars associated with cardinal directions.a common example would be the toad, hare, serpent, and crow. However within my own arte I call upon the familiars of the cardinal sins pictured above.
The traditional meanings of these animals are as follows:
The toad- greed
The serpent- envy
The [mountain] lion- wrath
The snail- sloth
The pig- gluttony
The goat- lust
The peacock (or turkey) - pride.
This list although very eurocentric and representative of my own cosmology, can be reworked to fit your own landscape and culture. If you do not have any of the animals near you, change the list! Get to know the spirits of your land and assign your own familars to these sins.
In cases where the witch is cut off from nature, and the animals' parts are not on hand to conjure the spirit, there are demons traditionally associated with these sins as well. And demons are very present within the lives and bodies (posession)of man. The demons are changed in name and sinful virtue based on time period and culture. But the two most popular lists come from "the lantern of light" and Binsfield. Whichever resonates most is the answer.
Tumblr media
The witch may call upon these demons or animal familiars for the arte that is cursing man. What i consider man can very well be the gender or just all humanity (non witches) themselves. But these beliefs are very forcibly removed from modern witch-caucus.
As for the remedy for these sins, one must request the aid of the 7 heavenly virtues. These vurtues are as follows:
Tumblr media
The heavenly virtues being the holy opposites of these Infernal spirits of demons or animals. These virtues are depicted as 7 angels, or 7 saints. Again, whichever list you prefer is the answer. The angels are a more modern concept applied by western occultusts. And are taken from my previous post on the 7 angels of planets. They are the main 7 Archangels found in Manila traditional catholic orders.
There are also lists of saints you can call against certain demons listed in the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum which i will share here
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The work is never just left or right, but in between the holy and heretical. The saints and demons are beneficial to the witch just as they are to the church. With sin comes hell, and with the holy spirit comes heaven. God commands both, as do witches. Therefore I am now God.
