Hi. Hope all is well. Was wondering what your thoughts are on TTPD double album as well as the video of the lead single. I see so many references to Matty in the video. The black dog. The black and white aesthetic. The lying down like Peanut on the patch of grass. The wedding dress imagery. The rain like when she played Question that night of the rain show. The leather jacket and silver ring Post Malone has in the last scenes. The faces like twins as well as the twin flames imagery. The writing to each other via typewriter standing in for the phones they used. The album itself is gut wrenching. And of course the past relationship of 2014 comes to light and I saw someone say that she used to party with the back then and they did date but her parents broke it up because of his drug use and no one was allowed to talk about but that it was well know by everyone around them. 31 songs is a lot to take in especially when many of them have similarities to 1975 songs so I am still processing it but was wondering what you thought. Thx
Hello again! All is well, just… my head hasn't stopped spinning for a week so I haven't posted much as I process it all! lol
I can't believe we got a double album after all that clowning. It definitely felt like a "be careful what you wish for" sort of moment, because I have been in a constant state of shock and overwhelm trying to make sense of these 31 songs!
You're right! TTPD is bursting at its seams with references to Matty and The 1975, their sound and aesthetic, etc. I'm going to be posting all of the parallels that have been found in the coming days. I'm not ready to definitively list which songs are or aren't about Matty, but there are a few smoking guns, to say the least - TTPD being one of them. The fact that this track shares a title with the album, hints that it's mostly telling a cohesive story (as I believe ALL of Taylor's albums do!)
There are a lot of people coming out of the woodwork lately claiming they know insider information about Taylor and Matty back in the day. I'm personally not impressed with any of that, not in the age of clickbait and instant gratification for lying, especially while they're a hot topic of conversation right now.
But the good news is… you don't need anything other than their discographies to piece together their story, and TTPD seems like it was about a much earlier time in their history, especially given she was working on this album prior to May 2023. Not to mention, I don't for one minute believe Matty had ANY type of relapse while on tour, either (I am incredibly, INCREDIBLY disheartened by "fans" who assumed otherwise based on his stage performance). Lastly, the fact the album exists at all, with SO many blatant references to Matty alongside references to his drug use - makes me feel pretty confident that Taylor would not release any of this without his blessing. Thanks for the ask! 🤍

Hi! Do you think Peter is the final closure? Or it just talks about what happened in 2014?
Oh, anon. Apologies in advance, because I'm going to have a real weird answer for you.
Right now, I'm of the belief that Taylor has been rehashing events from her past for several albums, now. I think she's pulling from an old well of feelings, and really filtering out whatever muck remains.
So.. closure? Sure! But not in the way people seem to be taking it.
I think she and Matty have a much more extensive history than anyone knows (never directly alluding to each other for the sake of their privacy, thus using "red herrings" - since just because you buy someone's album, it does not entitle you to personal details about their lives that they don't feel comfortable sharing)... but that they're ready to move forward now, and everything we've seen since BFIAFL & Midnights was all a set-up to tell their real story, which likely did involve an unresolved and agonizing period of separation, which we're seeing a repeat of right now.
Gut instinct tells me Taylor would not release an album like this without Matty's knowledge and consent. Is Taylor easter egging the hell out of Matty and The 1975 (to the point Matty should probably get a restraining order), or were they easter egging TTPD? Good question to ask, right about now! Another thing I'd suggest is going back through Matty's BFIAFL-era interviews (I'd suggest Zane Lowe and Tom Powers). He did a lot of talking about growing up and settling down... not very Peter-like, is it? Lastly, TTPD was in the works before May 2023 ever happened.
Anyway, the short answer is no, this isn't the last we'll see (or hear) of Matty. Thanks for the ask! 🤍

I assume you're the same person with this name on twitter. I'm wondering your thoughts on Now Is The Hour being a goodbye for now song. Produced by Jack. It was likely recorded last year, but the timing and the message . . .
Hello! I know this is a bit confusing and convoluted, but I'm not the twitter user tayfabe75! (this is my twitter account for anyone curious, and if you take one look at it, you'll see why I don't control the twitter account too lol it is... not my forte) The twitter user is sort of like our "heel", since, isn't that what twitter is for? Pissing people off?
So, why do we have the same account name? Because we're both part of an underground collective who have been freely theorizing about whatever story Taylor and Matty are telling - something that (up until the drop of TTPD, anyway) basically got you drawn and quartered anywhere on the internet, but especially Twitter and Reddit! While we believe the same general theory, I can't guarantee that you'll get the same answer out of her and me lol
But let me get to your actual question...
Now Is The Hour!
Anon, can I go ahead and admit that I don't really watch television? I have no idea what The New Look is about, so we'll just focus on the music. What I do know is that this soundtrack was curated by Jack Antonoff, who I believe chose both the songs and the artists who performed them, which was largely based around who was available to work with him. While I believe Jack does help Taylor and Matty craft the broad strokes of their story, I think that when it comes to taking on a job like curating a soundtrack for a television show, that task takes precedence. Now, if you believe Matty over D*uxmoi, and do not require performative proof of friendship via social media posts, then Jack and Matty are probably still best friends. His inclusion on both The New Look soundtrack and the current Bleachers album support this theory. That said, he could've gotten first choice regarding which song he wanted to perform for the soundtrack.
I hesitate to glean too much from the lyrics if Matty did not pen them himself, but music seems very important to him, so there's at least a chance he selected the song because it fits a personal narrative. What I will say is that I wouldn't put it past him, and it does eerily echo this whole Cardigan Peter Pan-esque ghosting narrative. The soft shakiness of Matty's voice makes this a difficult song for me to return to, so thank you for urging me to tune in again. Just beautiful! And thanks for the ask, too 🤍

Would love to know your thoughts on the apple music playlists? I feel TTPD is not what every swiftie thinks it's going to be just like with every Taylor album. The silence is LOUD! She is getting the conversation going though
Anon, sorry for getting to you so late! But, what I think about the playlists is that most people are interpreting them erroneously because they're going off of pre-established "lore" or what they think they know about Taylor's life - what that means in practice, is that fans are heavily basing their interpretations on tabloid gossip, when Taylor herself has been screaming about how luxurious secrets are… even suggesting, on multiple occasions, that fans do not know the true narrative of her life! But much like we saw with the hate campaign against Matty in May, fans think they know better...
That said, my prediction is that 'Dear Reader' will be tomorrow's (er... today's?) song. Burn all your files!
Lastly, the true mysery of TTPD is not going to be who it's about, but when it's about!
Thanks for the ask!

almost forgot I am sure you saw it but Matty uploaded load of crisps to tumbler and sound cloud today. He removed wiki link on his insta back to his Truman black website and distrust hit also posted load of crisps on insta. Very interesting lyrics especially since this was written during the Notes era…Looking forward to your thoughts on it
Hi again! Apologies for my tardiness. 'Loads of Crisps'… well, if you want an interpretation through a "Tatty" lens, my biggest initial takeaways from it were:
"Man of steel" is Superman's moniker! We've got an allusion to a wedding tradition in "something borrowed, something new, something old, Me and You". "Me and You" - likely a reference to both 1975 songs as well as, perhaps, 'Me & You Together Song' (where, of course, Matty wears a Superman shirt!)
Do we know for sure 'Loads of Crisps' was written during Notes era? If so, well NOACF's release date is featured in the 'I Can See You' music video!
I'd suggest giving the 'Me' music video another watch, and see if it reminds you of anything (say, Matty leaving someone's house in the middle of the night, or… leaving like a father?)
Lastly, my tardiness allowed for another very interesting turn of events today, which included some possible Truman Black easter eggs from Taylor Swift, herself!

Do you think there are parallels between “By Your Side” and “False God”?
Hi anon! So, since 'By Your Side' is a cover of a Sade song, I haven't really over-analyzed the lyrics since they're not actually Matty's own words (though it does share similarities with the general themes you find in both Matty and Taylor's music, and it's probably an important song in Matty's musical inspirations) but I do think the songs are very sonically similar! Taylor's use of saxophone in False God instantly gave me 1975 vibes, as well as the little distorted electronic sounds/voices throughout the song.
Speaking of which, the very end of 'False God' with its repetitious "I love you"s reminds me a lot of 'Then Because She Goes':
A good tactic when it comes to tackling Taylor's lyrical parallels is to search song titles. So, let's check out "by your side" for fun and see what we find…

Ah, Mr. Perfectly Fine! I'd suggest giving that one another listen, and when you do, I'd go ahead and pair it with Robbers! If you don't hear it, here's a little help.

hi. Nice to read your posts again. I just wanted to comment it’s not just Matty wearing watches for the UK and European shows it was all the band members. Assumption it was a gift to the band as they appear to all be the same. Loved your post on Psyche. Lots to ponder there.
Oh! I hadn't caught that they all had similar watches! How sweet.
Also, thank you! I forgot to mention the Psyche/Eros imagery in Anti-Hero where she's literally shot in the heart by, well, what I might describe as a Matty-coded guy! lol

I always wished I could better see his pins, or whatever is on his jacket. Ah well! Thanks for the ask ♥

"A balaclava is, you know, if you go skiing and you have a thing that covers your whole face, and then… so if you're going to do a bank robbery, you'd go and wear one of them. So that, Robbers is a song about a love story between two thieves, between two bank robbers. And that line is just mentioning the fact of her discomfort in this… what's it called?" Sturmmaske. "Yeah, that's what she's wearing. And um, I suppose that's about the idea of her commitment to the relationship even though it's quite a violent, volatile situation. I think people will like that song, Robbers, when they hear it. I was watching… you know that movie, 'True Romance'? I fell asleep watching that movie and had a really, really vivid dream with an amazing narrative and I wrote a song based on that. It's kind of like Bonnie & Clyde. That's the idea, anyway."

A: There's a huge visual component to The 1975 with the black and white imagery. I love the intricacy of the storylines in your music videos. The new single is going to be "Robbers" and the video for that is out on Monday. What can you share with us about the storyline for that one? MH: I can tell that you've done your research and I like what you said about all of the intricacies and the narratives in the videos, I can't… I'm not going to tell you because it's the one… I suppose, well, it's Bonnie and Clyde. I was always really interested when I was a teenager in True Romance, the movie by Quentin Tarantino. Bonnie and Clyde the characters, the idea of love – an all encompassing true kind of love that makes people feel like they're the centre of the universe, capable of anything. I think there have been so many hints to True Romance within our band, within our visual things that people haven't noticed maybe. Even the house that we filmed the colour video for "Sex" in with those kids, that was the house that is Brad Pitt's in True Romance, where he lives, where Clarence hangs out. It's an ode to True Romance, it's an ode to Romeo & Juliet, it's an ode to romantic cinema that I grew up loving, and it stars me and my friend Chelsea. I love it, I'm very proud of it – I'm very proud of the story and the way that we executed it.

"The song 'Love Story' is a song that I wrote by myself and uh, I wrote it about, you know, this relationship that… it travels from when these two people first make eye contact to when, you know, they figure out that society doesn't want them to be together to when they realize that love overcomes everything. I wrote the song and I kind of had the vision for the video in my head a little bit. I really wanted it to be back in time, um, because I think it just kind of… it talks about that love that could be in any time period. You know, the Romeo and Juliet can't be together, but love pulls them together kind of thing. I thought that was pretty cool. And I think that can happen in the 1700s, or the 1800s, or 2008."
August 2009: Taylor explains the concept behind 'Love Story' and the inspiration for the music video. (source)

Ehi! Do you think that "the black dog" could be about Matty?
Sure I do! Why not? When we have precisely three words to go off of, the world is our oyster black dog!
You know what? Let's have some fun. I'm going to wager a guess I haven't seen much speculation about yet, which is that 'The Black Dog' could be about Cerberus! Yep, the three-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld in Greek mythology…
To explain his possible significance, I must first introduce you to Psyche: the Greek goddess of the soul, whose symbol is butterfly wings…
Tumblr media
But she wasn't always a goddess! She used to be a mortal woman. One so beautiful that she stirred jealousy within the goddess of love & beauty, herself, Aphrodite, who ordered her son and god of love, Eros (also known as Cupid), to make Psyche fall in love with the most wretched creature imaginable. Instead, Eros found himself so taken by Psyche's beauty that he fell in love with her, himself!
And so, Psyche was whisked away to a palace wherein an invisible lover bestowed upon her great luxury and riches, keeping her company each night in total darkness to obscure his identity. So long as she never looked upon him, they could remain lovers.
Eventually, curiosity got the better of her and Psyche shone a light on Eros… So stunned by his beauty, she dropped her oil lamp, burning him. Injured and betrayed, Eros escaped into the night, abandoning her.
Distraught, Psyche set forth to make amends with her lost lover, confronting Aphrodite (also known as Venus), who presented her with a series of trials she must first complete…
Tumblr media
One of which required a trip to the underworld…
Tumblr media
And, yep! You guessed it. Psyche had to sneak past the three-headed (black?) guard dog Cerberus… (who might've been referenced in 'Blank Space' via a trio of Dobermans?:)
Tumblr media
Then, ferried by Charon, Psyche traveled across the River Styx…
Tumblr media
While Psyche traversed the underworld, Eros healed from his burns and then set off in search of reconciliation with Psyche, ultimately returning to his lost lover...
Tumblr media
So, if the Karma video really is a sort of visual retelling of Psyche's journey back to Eros… who do you suppose is on the piano bench at the end here? Some say Jack (who, interestingly, recently released a song featuring Matty on piano!)… But, considering the romantic tone of the Psyche & Eros love story… it seems to fit Somebody Else a bit better, wouldn't you say? Somebody who, like Eros, was burned after exposure…
Somebody who might symbolize the ram's horns on Taylor's underworld mask (Aries), somebody whose birthday aligns with the solar eclipse this year, somebody who shares an association with Bonnie Parker and Wizard of Oz, somebody who drinks out of eerily similar coffee cups in front of a clock that happens to bear the same time as the twin coffee cup from Karma…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If any of these Psyche/Eros parallels happen to be more than pure coincidence, then perhaps it is worth noting that, much like Betty and James, Eros and Psyche also end up together 🏹
That said? Yeah, yeah! I know. 'The Black Dog' will probably be a depressing song, given that it is basically synonymous with depression. But I have a small window for clowning left. That said, there's also Mayhem, a black dog who is surely worthy of a sonnet!
Tumblr media
Another fun guess: Toto from The Wizard of Oz! But I'm not sure if he's technically considered brown or black, but in my head he's a black dog, anyway lol Toto would be a great subversion of current expectations, at least!

Thanks for the ask! 🤍

hi. Hope all is ok. Was wondering if you think there will be a reveal soon since The 1975 tour will end on Sunday or do you think it will be it later
Hello again! Yes, all is okay! Just needed a bit of a break. Regular antics will resume (as time allows). But thank you for thinking of me!
Now, I don't know exactly when you asked this, but as you know by now, tour has ended and… nothin'! But I believe that Matty and Taylor are supposed to appear as though they've completely moved on from each other leading into the release of TTPD. Not to mention, it would be very jarring if she up and dumped her current partner for Somebody Else. I think we've seen that film before... lol
Here's my thinking: Taylor says her favorite stories are ones with a moral lesson. Combine that with one of my favorite quotes of hers:
"People often greatly underestimate me on how much I'll inconvenience myself to prove a point."
And I'm guessing that's exactly what we're in store for with TTPD. That it's going to express her heartbreak over the unsolicited and inappropriate "intervention" regarding her love life last May. What's actually hysterical to me is that fans seem to think that Taylor, who was notoriously "cancelled" in 2016 and has spoken at length about how difficult it was for her, would somehow applaud the same treatment of Matty. Anyway.
So, rumor has it that Matty pulled an "Irish exit", leaving Taylor without warning - so says DM, anyway, which I strongly urge everyone's skepticism of... but if we take that as part of a purposely constructed narrative, then that… sounds an awful lot like 'Cardigan', doesn't it? "Leavin' like a father, running like water". And even 'Question...?': "Did you leave her house in the middle of the night?" Curious!
Since predicting dates is seldom a worthwhile endeavor… I'll redirect your focus from a "reveal", instead, to TTPD! The album is fast approaching, and I suspect it will provide some insight, and perhaps it will answer questions regarding Matty and what happened there. (Conversely, I hope it brings a whole lot of confusion to anyone who disregarded Matty as someone who meant a lot to Taylor simply because it was trendy to hate him). But if I'm dead wrong and find my expectations totally subverted by TTPD, well, it's still a fucking Taylor Swift album so it's already a guaranteed banger, ain't it? lol
Beyond that, Taylor's back on tour soon - in Paris, no less! I'll be paying attention to her surprise songs, hopefully we get more illuminating mashups! And there's at least a 1% chance the boys drop something DLID-related this year, right? Right? ...RIGHT? 😭

hi. Just wondering if you have seen the last couple of concerts that were streamed and what you think about Matty feeling quite down. Do you still think there is any hope for him and taylor to be back together
I'm going to preface this (probably) controversial take by first explaining that I think Matty is someone who, while touring, is lucky to be utterly surrounded by loved ones. From his bandmates to his manager, the personal friends he's enlisted to handle the merch, lighting, stage production, etc, even the security guys seem quite close with Matty. If the man was truly struggling with poor mental health, he has a giant support network at his fingertips. Trust me, if you can tell Matty is upset from a grainy livestream, the ones on and behind the stage can, too - and they care, even more than me or you! Because they know him, truly know him, in a way that fans never could, no matter how many times they listen to his albums or watch his interviews. He's good! Or, if he's not, he will be soon, because he's got his boys!
All that said… I'm going to draw attention to something else Matty said while on stage:
"Even in an earnest moment, you should always be suspicious."
And so, I remain suspicious! If Matty appears upset on stage, it's either one of two things: 1) tour is ending, or 2) he wants to appear upset. He once said this about ATVB:
"It's a show that feels pretty loose, but it's actually very, very tight. It's very, very well-rehearsed."
I know the generally accepted fan take is that Matty is just too ADHD to follow through with anything and gave up whatever his plans for the show were supposed to be... But what if the plan was always to make it look like he was really going through it for the duration of SATVB? Upset, distracted, struggling. He even preemptively warned of this emotional shift:
"If you see me sliding over the next six months, I appreciate it, but don't worry about it."
Of course, if Matty has truly been experiencing mental turmoil in his personal life that has since spilled into his professional life, I wish him all the best and hope he finds time and space to heal, but I trust that he's in very good hands if that's the case. After all, he assured us that the boys (his chosen family, if you will) would die for each other if it came down to it!
But, if all is as it seems and Matty truly lost Taylor last June… and if his upset during the last handful of SATVB shows was somehow connected to that loss all these months later… I would point you to the 'Oh Caroline' video, which shows what will become of him if he gets the ending he had hoped to avoid… (ie: if he got it "wrong")
Tumblr media
He still ends up with his boys! That's not so bad, is it? Do you happen to know how many folks out there dream of growing old with either Ross, George, or Adam? A whole bunch. And all three? Matty, you lucky dog!
For me, the more likely explanation is that absolutely everything has been orchestrated from start to finish. The tour may have concluded, but the show must go on. So, yes! I would bet money on Matty finding his way back to Taylor. And by the time he does, I even suspect the tides will have turned in his favor following whatever devastation awaits us in TTPD. We'll see!
But... how curious that a pair of artists who have both romanticized star-crossed love stories... should end up in one of their own! Luckily for us, Taylor didn't like the ending of Romeo and Juliet, so she changed it. Thanks for the ask! 🤍

There’s a video of Matty performing ‘Falling for You’ recently where he mouths/talks into another microphone that isn’t on (so you obviously can’t hear him) and I swear he says ‘Taylor’ at the end.
Another thing is that he’s started wearing a watch for every performance this year. Taylor wore the watch necklace to the Grammy’s and posted the ‘tick tick tick’ (lyrics?). Reminds me of the coffee clock in the Karma music video (with Matty in the background) and the timer in ATPOAIM episode 4. Counting down the time till they can be together?
Hi anon! I think that, at the time you sent this, I tried to find a video of what you meant but didn't have much luck. Happen to have a link? (Look at me boldly assuming you even see this after all this time! lol)
But, I have to say… that description kinda reminds me of his performance of 'New York' when he opened for Phoebe Bridgers, where right after the lyric "reminds me of the two of us", it sounds like he says "Taylor" very softly…
(Officially, the lyrics claim he says "again" there, but that word definitely doesn't start with a vowel. I'm hearing a "T" sound there, though I suppose it could be "together"?)
I have noticed the mysterious watch that appeared this year! I hadn't really kept track of whether or not he had it on at every show, but I'd believe it based on the shows I have caught (I just double-checked their first show of the year at the OVO Hydro, and yep! He's got it on).
Anon, the amount of clocks is enough to drive me mad. I'm suddenly reminded The 1975's latest release: "Now is the Hour"…
Lastly, here's another fun clock to add to your list of Tatty timepieces! Thanks for the ask! 💛
