The Obsidian Fieldlands are quiet tonight, save from the occasional cry from a nocturnal pokemon. The air is cold, as most of the Hisuian climate tends to be. It nips at your nose, causing you to shiver. The sooner you're back to the village, the better. At least the path you've taken is clear of Pokemon. The last thing you need is to be attacked by a monster in the middle of the night.

As soon as you think it, you feel eyes on you. It's nothing to worry about, you try to reassure yourself, just a passive Pokemon watching you pass by peacefully. As long as you don't linger, you should be fine. Then you hear it. Footsteps. You slow your pace for a moment, just to make sure that it truly isn't just your own. But the footsteps don't slow. It's keeping a continuous pace. You pick up your pace in response.

Your mind begins to run wild, imagining the best and worst case scenarios. A pikachu just following the scent of your travel rations. One of the Miss Fortune bandits, ready to jump you at any moment... you try to run faster, but the ground below you suddenly takes a drop, tripping you.

Your clothes have protected you from any scrapes, but you know in that moment, you're screwed. You turn around finally, daring to look at the danger that is certainly approaching.

It's a... person? No, no, surely not. It has the mane and face of an ancient baneful fox, but the body of a human. Perhaps it's an illusion? Or maybe just a mask? Its pace has remained steady, not speeding up or slowing down. They stop in front of you, looking down at your fearful form. They seem to be sizing you up.

And eventually, they continue on their way. Stepping around you, they make their way into the woods. Seems they have no intention to hurt you after all....

Do you call after them? Or perhaps follow behind?

Basically, Draglimmer/Glittragon are my little fakemon babies, so I'm spoiling them by giving them regional variants for every region. A good chunk of these were designed by friends, so credits (as well as types and evolution methods) will be below the cut!

I mentioned this on Twitter a couple of times but I thought about bringing this here as well.

Basically, my boyfriend @zyhod is in a complicated situation money wise. To try to give him a hand with things and to get myself used with commissions, I’m opening simple drawing commissions (traditional art and character design) where I draw and you send him the monei.

Payment is via Paypal or Ko-fi. If you rather commission Caelan himself, his commission post is over there.

Also! My poly partner/Caelan’s joyfriend Casper ( @shrewd-possessor ) is also doing commissions in the same fashion! If you rather commission them instead, check their post here. The money will go to the same person, you just get art from another person.

Short update time!

Well, short in the sense there’s not a whole lot to cover? Just plopping down some in-progress work and the like before skedaddling for a bit again.

Check out below the cut to see what’s up in the world of CoF’s development!

First and foremost, I’ve completed 2 of the 3 rough outlines for the chapters that will be part of the next update!!

Once I’ve done the rough outlining for the final one, I’ll let my fellow writers take a look at things, see if they have any suggestions to help the flow/pacing/cohesion, and then get to work with the basic writing. 

This is the same process I used for the demo, and it’s definitely a bit... Messy? On google docs? Well, the comment feature is great and the suggest edits one is as well, cause people can give their input and fix typos directly in the doc so I have it all in one place

... But it’s not suuuuuuper great for any sort of flowchart-like structure, which is definitely what this story will need. But! We’re dealing with it for now, so no worries there!

Next, the other main facet of development that’s been going on is more character design. This is primarily because in the next chapters, more side characters become relevant, and the world fills out a lot more.

For example, we’ll be having quite a few individuals popping up in the Great Sea arc, so I asked my character designers to see what they could come up with while I worked on outline stuff--Just an assortment of oceanic designs I could pull from when I needed something.

And I got a good array! There’s these fellas, and then I’ve also received a crab friend!!

There’s also some friends from the Magic route, namely a bunch of Stellaxi! Stellaxi are largely what you’ll be seeing for the Magic route’s chapter, but I hope they’re various enough for you to enjoy them all ^^

There’s also some work being done on the Fae, but I’m gonna keep those secret for now ;) all I’ll say at the moment is the Court Heads that I shared a while back finally have their clean ref art--No major differences from the sketch, just lines and colored properly.

It’s not just new characters that are getting fiddled with for design work, there’s also some tweaks here and there that will pop up in chapters, so I did quick little things to visualize and plan out how things will look in the sprites and art.

You may have to open the image in a new tab to see it fully, but the example noted here is Leau actually providing her attire to Umi so she can hide--Why, to pretty much every aspect of that? 

It also highlights just how simple most of Leau’s clothes are without her tentacles draping around them, since that’s a mix of Ikaling custom as well as part of their fashion sense--You’re usually expected to wrap your tentacles around your clothes so you don’t accidentally smack or trip others. Over time, Ikalings adopted it into their fashion, wearing clothes that were relatively simple, but stood out once their tentacles were applied in some way.

Aside from that, there’s definitely considerations already in regards for structure and programming, but that’s largely staying on the backburner until I actually start the detailed writing, for several reasons. 

I’d most certainly like the chapters to start stepping out a bit more into Ren’Py’s capabilities in terms of choices having an affect on what you do--and not just in the way the demo covered. I’d like more latent choice results, so you don’t always know if a decision you make will have any sort of impact until later on.

We also heard as feedback from people to implement a sort of index or glossary in-game people can rely on--And we definitely agree! It was a consideration during the initial demo development, but it was filed under ‘polish’ and in the end, I settled for the bio cards as a quick alternative for the character info. But I found a plug-in that could potentially allow for writing up more info on the characters, as well as stuff about locations, lore, and species info, so we’ll be looking into that later down the line.

Well, there wasn’t a whole lot to brush on this time around, but I still ended up typing a lot, oopsies. But yeah, things are going smoothly, so keep your eyes out for future updates!!
