A little late, but here is my

2021 Writing Self Evaluation

6. Work I’m most proud of (and why): Probably I’m Asking You Please Don’t Talk Dirty to Me. It was my first time following someone else’s prompt in probably over five years, my first time writing an ABO fic, my first time using a beta, and my first time participating in a fic fest. The reception was good, and I like how it came out! I’m also quite proud of Even If It’s Only for Tonight because it’s the first time I wrote a threesome lol.

7. Work I’m least proud of (and why): I’d say Jack-off O’lantern from the Trick or Treat fest. I wrote it really fast, I had never worked with a word limit before, and I’m still not sure if the premise is too weird lmao. I wasn’t going to even write it and post it, but I think @neondiamond convinced me to haha.

8. Share or describe a favorite review you received: I don’t know if I can pick just one! I appreciate every kind comment that is left for me. I especially love when people tell me specifically what they liked about the story :)

9. A time when writing was really, really hard: I’d say the past couple of months actually. I haven’t been inspired, I’ve been going through a lot in my personal life, and things are just all over the place. I’ve needed a few extensions, but I’m trying to do what I can!

10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: I’m going to have to say just all of Exposed Like the Moon and Down the Milky Way. They are about Narry and Lirry respectively, two ships I had never written before, but for Wordplay this year, I had decided to write one piece for Harry with each other boy. It was a great challenge and a very interesting change from my usual ships.

11. A favourite excerpt of your writing: This is from He Said “You’re Such a Crybaby”

“Getting bitten hurts, Harry,” Louis said seriously, pulling back and meeting his boy’s glassy eyes. “Do you like getting bitten?”

Harry sobbed at this, not sure what answer Louis was looking for. Did he like getting bitten? Yes. Good God, yes. He liked the delicious pinpricks against his flesh; he liked feeling like he was being claimed by his dom; he liked seeing the angry purple marks afterwards; he liked the way it felt when he pressed his fingers into them later on to be given a shock of pain, reminding him that Louis’ teeth had been there; he even liked wearing them proudly and showing them off, although he had to hide them most of the time. Fuck, he absolutely loved being bitten.

But he knew this was a punishment, and Harry wasn’t supposed to like getting punished, even though they both knew that he clearly did. That was, of course, half the fun. So Harry was torn as to whether he should nod or shake his head at Louis’ question. Instead he closed his eyes, feeling the heavy droplets slide down to his chin as drool dribbled from around the ball in his mouth.

“Mmhmm, that’s what I thought,” Louis spoke, pinching at one of the bites and causing Harry to gasp around his gag.

12. How did you grow as a writer this year: Considering I hadn’t written fan fiction in years, I’d say I’ve grown a lot. I’ve learned so much. I’ve started taking feedback from betas and friends, I’ve learned to consider aspects of writing that I hadn’t thought of before, I’ve touched on plots and ships and tropes that I hadn’t written previously… A lot has changed this past year compared to my writing several years ago!

13. How do you hope to grow next year: I’m not sure I have a proper answer to this. I don’t have any expectations on growing further; I’m okay if things stay the same, and I’m okay if I learn new things. There’s nothing specific in that area that I am wanting.

14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): (Somehow this question got cut out lol whoops) I’d say Jess @neondiamond M @mercurial-madhouse <3 Very appreciative of them and all they have done to help me!

15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: In my fic I’m Inviting You (To a Party for Two), Louis mentions that he got Harry’s number by stealing Harry’s phone at a party and then calling himself, which is something I actually did once lmao. Other than that, I don’t think I put anything else from my life in my writing.

16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: Use lyrics.com and put in a keyword to find good titles for fics. Not writing advice, but it’s something I find helpful haha.

17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: I do have a couple of things hopefully coming up ;)

18. Tag some writers whose answers you’d like to read: Not sure who to tag because a lot of people have already done this, but consider yourself tagged if you want to do it too!

This list is always nearly impossible to make, so keep in mind that this is just a small selection out of hundreds of incredible bottom Louis fics that were posted this year. 1. Describe how you first started writing and when you first posted: My high school English teacher always encouraged me to write and that’s how it started. I wrote a lot of poetry before starting fiction/fan-fic and started posting earlier this year.

2. Which of your characters do you typically resonate most closely with? Do you base any characters off of yourself? Every character I write has a part of me, not just in the writing sense but also some traits of mine. I tend to write from Harry’s pov or any other character that is Louis’ romantic interest in the story, entirely because it’s a lot easier to write about Louis rather than as him.

3. Where do you often find inspiration? Real life mostly. Songs, movies and books as well.

4. Has quarantine helped or hindered your writing process? Didn’t notice much of a difference really.

5. Do you listen to music/noise while you write or do you prefer silence? I prefer silence when I write, helps me focus. Rarely do I find a song that fits perfectly with a scene so I have that on repeat until I can’t.

6. What is your biggest writing pet peeve in your writing or in general? People who say only authors with popular works deserve to be called writers.

7. Describe your ideal writing setup ink stains on my hand, fountain pen scribbling smoothly over the paper and a lamp as the only source of light. Somewhere warm and cozy.

8. Favourite time of day to write? Dawn and after midnight.

9. Favourite genre to write + one you’d like to try writing in the future? Horror, fantasy, magical realism, historical and dark elements. Sci-fi is a genre that is way out of my comfort zone so probably that.

10. Do you struggle with writer’s block? How do you typically overcome it? All the bloody time lmaoo. Usually I stick to songs that I enjoy listening, switch genres or plots to overcome the block.

11. What is the easiest part of your writing process and the most difficult? Everything other than outlining is my fav part. Outlining is one pain in the ass.

12. How do you come up with original characters? (If applicable) real life is where the key is.

13. What is your favourite and least favourite word? Least fav: moist fav: tasavvur (it’s an Urdu word that translates into imagination or contemplation)

14. What is one thing about your writing that you’re really proud of and one thing you hope to continue working at? I’m really glad I can paint the imagery of a scene quite well. Paragraph starters is what I’m working on atm.

15. What work of yours has your favourite ‘verse/world building? How did you come up with it? The Blood of Love is one of my best work and I say this very humbly. The atmosphere, the themes, the overshadowing, everything I wrote of it, I absolutely love it and am proud of it.

16. What font and size do you write in? Single spaced or double? Georgia, 11, single spaced.

17. What is a typo(s) you find yourself making consistently? Leaving out apostrophise.

18. (If applicable) do you separate fic writing from fandom? Most of the times. When I’m writing canon, I look into the fandom for inspo.

19. What emotion is you’re favourite to write? Which is the most difficult? Fear is my fav emotion to write, as weird as that sounds. I find writing humour very challenging.

20. What is one thing you hope readers always take away from your works? Writers put a lot of their time into fics and appreciation for the work is always heart-warming. Other than that, I wish more people noticed the overshadowing and metaphors used.

21. What is the best and worst writing advice you’ve ever received? No writing advice is bad. What may work for one may not be suited for other. You may not like what you’ve written today but you can always come back and edit it to your likeness.

22. Which one of your works would you most want to see turned into a film/television show? The Blood of Love for sure! Also a wip: inked memory aka ghost rider au

23. Do you write scenes chronologically or out of order? I write whichever scene I want to and then align them chronologically.

24. How do you handle criticism? Honest and genuine criticism is always welcomed, not spiteful J

25. What is the advice you would give to someone who is looking to start writing? Write because you want and not because you have to. Forcing it won’t do any good. It’s alright to not write when you don’t feel like it but don’t let that get you lazy.

26. What kind of feedback on your work always makes your day? Repeating myself here hehe but when readers notice the foreshadowing and metaphors I use, it brings the biggest smile on my face

27. Which fic ‘verse of your own would you most like to exist in? Which fic’s characters would you most like to befriend? The Blood of Love is a universe I’d love to exist in. Louis’ character from my estranged actor au and Harry from tbol really speak to me.

28. What do you always enjoy getting asks about/wish people would ask about more? Backstories about my characters and fic and my imagination. It runs wild lol

29. What has writing added to your life? How has it changed you? It’s helped me a lot to see from other people’s perspective and read body language in a better way.

30. Why do you write? It helps organize my thoughts and be more coherent in a way that imp not when speaking.

Thank you for sharing again that snippet from the Fic of Bad Feelings. I am hoping you return to this fic – I would love nothing more than some grown-up Zourry tenderness! The dynamics – physical and emotional, the tenderness, the understanding, the ways they get it right and inevitably get it wrong… I can’t put into words how much I want to read this fic, and how much I value the work that is required to write it. That's a beautiful and accurate way to put it and it tells me you're a really thoughtful reader, the kind of people I feel it is a gift to write for!). I also looooove exploring poly relationships and communication, character, tenderness studies :)).

Also this reception to this old fic draft of mine is taking me by surprise haha 😅. Even while I'm finishing another big fic right now, I've been reflecting on the ways writing in this fandom has been discouraging and even kind of distasteful sometimes. I really love the little circle of kind friends I've found here, but it's felt so much like this fandom is dominated by people who only want a very specific kind of fic and it is honestly a style that turns me off. I'm not sure how many readers there really are, versus fans who want a specific way of interacting with their fantasy. I'm really careful to keep a line between fiction and reality in rpf and I am increasingly worried that writing in this fandom contributes to a dynamic that I find unhealthy. I originally stopped writing this story because I saw stuff from people that seemed really angry and honestly even malicious about writing a poly ship at all, about writing Zayn, about authors who deviate at all from participating in headcanons about EXACTLY the version of these characters (fictional characters!!). And it just makes me ask things like, will anyone even read this? Will anyone care? I'm not trying to be ungrateful because I feel I've had tremendous love and support and visibility (which is sometimes just a matter of luck and I'm not trying to say it's my skill!!) for my writing.

But I started writing fic BECAUSE it was freeing and I felt even if you weren't "popular" you could still be supported in doing whatever you want. And that creative freedom way just a delight. But now, part of what holds me back is that I'll sit down to write and start to get really anxious. Am I doing it wrong? Will someone think I'm a bad person for having a certain fantasy? Is there too much sex? Not enough sex? The wrong kind of sex? Is the writing I'm doing because it brings me joy to think about relationships and health and tenderness...is it considered "wrong" by this fandom?

I'm sorry that this probably isn't returning the joyful energy that this ask brings. I treasure your appreciation for this story! I just felt like being a little more honest about my anxieties right now. I hold these doubts back a lot but I think the only way forward is through them. In a way, I think all of our work in writing fic transcends any fandom and its dramas and imperfections. But I find myself wondering where the communities are that give me the MOST joy, and will foment the MOST creativity from me in return, and I think that's an important question for anyone thinking about telling stories.

Anyway I guess this is kind of an explanation for why I've drafted this story and love it and appreciate y'all so much but am unsure if it's a good idea to finish it 🙃

My advice to Harry for HS2 (this eh… got away from me)

First would be head over to Sweden to Max Martin and beg him to write songs with a kind of racketing Northern UK 80s vibe (think Jessie’s girl), some rollicking early George Michael, and a little bit of Tom Jones cheese on top. No hair metal, no 70s dreariness, no bombast. (Stop trying to reincarnate FM and GnR through a British xfactor contestant Irving – its making everyone look silly!). Second he should head back over to Nashville for some nice country song songs he can pour his wee heart into. It’d be a mixed bag but so were Midnight Memories and MITAM and they’re great albums imo. ‘Girl name’ songs and hook-up songs are mostly banned because HS1 has forever tainted Harry singing songs like that with a truly nasty level of misogyny. Instead the songs should be as follows but in no particular order:

‘A boat from an Island up my Own Arse’ (James’ song) : about what happens when you fall for your own follower count and start acting the arse – relatable for loads of kids in these days of social media notoriety.

This song could be deep and introspective and Harry could get Kodaline to help him write it (they already have a good one on this called The Answer) or it could be a fun rocking slap up his own head, a tongue in cheek send up of his own hype. His choice, artist input is important. You could have loads of fun with this video but Jaffsen (James, Jeff, Ben) are banned from any involvement, except they can cameo as themselves maybe.

2 ‘Look At You Now’ ; continuing on from the theme of 1. This song could be a counterpoint, fast where the other is slow or vice versa. Its not a love song, it’s about that one friend you took for granted, and mean-girled in front of your cooler friends just because they were all awkward laughing and train-track braces but now they’re all grown and fit and you’re looking a bit past your sell by date. Also relatable in a post high school sort of way to a lot of people. Perfect chance for a bit of open-ended homoeroticism - like a love song to how fit and thick your former best male friend has gotten and how you kinds wish you were him.

4. ‘Guess I’m just a Tool’ ; about what happens when the only friends you have, only met you when you were already famous and all your old mates got sick of you. Not a ‘waah haterz abe jealous’ song (the world has had enough of those) – a little insight and something new to say will be required. Sloppy lyrics or ideas not accepted.

5. ‘Looking at me, looking at me’ ; this could be Abba-esque, and the. one. song. where Jeff is allowed to adlib, with ‘Ah-Haaa’ (he must dress as Alan Partridge for the video though that’s non-negotiable). This one is about narcissism in the present day when you realise even on other people’s birthdays you’re always just checking out yourself in the selfie. Could be all deep and sorrowful eiher – but then no Jefe, no adlibs. It would be most fun as a joke song though. We’ll leave it to Harry and his hopefully new therapist to figure out where the song goes.

(Corden would almost certainly want to do the video but he’s banned, along with all the Kardashians. Jefe could cameo as above but not contribute any ideas at all. This could not be Kendall does Protest levels of bad, it’s a song about narcissism, not an exercise in narcissism)

6. ‘You’re to coo-ool for meee, in all the ti-ings you beee’ ; this is about what it’s like when your best friend always looks like Apollo fcked a Disney princess and sent the child to be brought up by the ghost of Jimi Hendrix. Also a good chance for open ended homoeroticism. Every piece of clothing you own looks better on him and he just does everything so much cooler. You hate him but you love him, this love is tainted. A mea culpa for the dark sided shit team Azoff have almost certainly pulled on Z.

7. ‘Don’t you wish you could be Louis’ Girl’ ; a straight up rip off of Jessie’s Girl really. This sounds bad but in a surprise twist it would actually be a paean, a celebration of the string of fit girls Louis has loved, in the best tradition of Northern UK rock. It would be updated to include an element of empathy for, and celebration of, the millions of us who aren’t size E.

The song would also have a note of the longing that comes from your best friend always being in long term relationships along with lots of nice non-misogynistic celebration of women of all shapes and sizes and family types. A mea culpa for Kiwi and all the other nastiness of HS1. Girl Almighty but raunchier music and better lyrics.

Larries will be happy thinking it’s about Harry wishing he was Louis’ girl, but the kindness in the lyrics will cut off the nastiness they tend to spew. Harry will pull on his big boy pants and reiterate the need for fans to stop trashing other women in interviews, while humbly admitting the song is a rip-off, a tongue in cheek homage to

8. ‘Untitled’ ; this is about what happens when your best friend gets on a leetle too well with your love. They have all the same interests, they start to finish each other’s sentences, they get each other’s jokes when you don’t…. they touch each other alot … ‘jokingly’. You don’t wanna act Zealous but fucks sake! …. Cue 1 million Zouis fan vids and Zourry triangle angst fics! I live for them!

9. ‘I got caught up in the wrong kind of love’ ; this one could be serious, country and western vibes, that pulls together a lot of the earlier themes. Its about what happens when you let down the love of your life because you get too caught up in loving your own career. That hot friend from song 8 ends up being their shoulder to cry on and they end up comforting each other in all kinds of ways. You’re all wronged but you all did wrong. Everybody hates everybody but no one can move on. There is potential for two more songs looking at same situation from different angles.

Ssshh, these don’t have to be real - cue aaall the fics, this fandom runs on them after all.

10. A cover of ‘I can’t help falling in love with you.’ Don’t … touch me.

11. Bonus Track: Harry, Liam and Tinie Tempah cover Don’t Worry, Be Happy. It is released as a single and they donate the proceeds to a shelter in Thailand that rescues trafficked girls.

TLDR: Harry ceases to be as ass about 1D and himself and remembers that he got famous by being fun and light and bringing a little joy to people’s lives. He doesn’t have to abandon attempts to write his own deep and / or experimental album, he just has to postpone it until he has the groundwork done, musically, intellectually, spiritually.

Promo: Jaffben are not allowed anywhere near the recording process except for Jefe on song 5. Jefe does not go to RS or NME for promo. He goes to Closer and OK. Harry goes on Loose Women and Elvis Duran and Jonathan Ross and gives intelligible answers about the end of 1D, his last album, his new direction etc and doesn’t act all disingenuous like he doesn’t know why the interviewer would want to know. He gives 0 long-form masturbatory interviews to glossy magazines.

He can draw whatever lines he likes around his personal life as long as he states it clearly, gives a reasonable explanation on his take on privacy now vs the family feel of early 1D, and then sticks to it. Jefe does not use the gossip rags as promo. If he’s being all private then his mother and sister are 100% silent on him too, no backdoor gossip mongering, no nepotism, no encouraging invasive stalkers. He ceases to let all and sundry use him to shill their shit. This fandom has been bled dry enough already. He gets his passive aggressive tendencies under control and only uses them to silence the nastier elements of his fandom.

There is no perfume ad, no docuwank, unless Jaffben want to film themselves actually jerking off to their HS shrines - they can put that on pornhub at their own discretion. Basically Jaffben and Apple are not allowed to monetise the shit out of this fandom. Harry puts himself out there and sells his music. The End.

Or y’know he carries on as is, lets Jefe bag him some more film roles, maybe a romantic ‘comedy’ with the same nasty misogynistic undertones as his album and the shitcom? (Think Apatow but worse) Does another derivative album, gets Irving to pull strings so its praised no matter what, rinse repeat.
