Rules: List five things you never get tired of writing; it can be tropes, themes, characters, phrases, whatever brings you joy. Then tag five people!
Tagged by @lochrannn, thank youuuu! I always like to be asked, lol. And look, I did do it faster than I thought!
1. Characters who are absolutely convinced that they are a particular way, but shown by the narrative to be utterly wrong about that. e.g. characters who think they have no friends, and on the way into work they greet like six people by name and they know all about one another and have plans to meet up. Or characters who think they’re tough as nails (aside from the pressed flower they kept from the little kid who gave it to them for saving their kitten, listen, that was an exceptional - okay, so they're also teaching the teenager across the hall how to box but that’s just because - yes they brought up Mrs Hannigan’s groceries but she was about to - look this is all CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE OKAY THEY ARE TOUGH AND SCARY AND MEAN!).
2. Romance with characters who make each other laugh. Like, they have fun together. They enjoy each other’s company. It’s not just all Drama and Misery and kissing in the rain. They send each other shitty memes, and think the smartass remark the other one made to their sibling was the funniest thing ever.
3. Romance with characters who think the other person is the most annoying human being on the planet. Sort of like the above, tbh - I like my pathos to be bathos. I like people to be human, and flawed. And I like their romantic partner to see those flaws and go oh my god I am going to murder you if you don’t stop talking about your ridiculous plan to save JFK jfc it’s the worst plan I’ve ever heard. Or oh my god why do you keep bacon in your shoe no one keeps bacon in their shoe what the hell is wrong with you??? And then they kiss.
4. Characters acquiring friends outside the narrative. People who can be there to pass them a drink and tell them he’s not worth it. People who call them on their shit. People who remember their birthday. People who ask them if they can dogsit over the weekend. People who remind them that there is an ordinary world out there and that it’s boring and great and warm and worth it.
5. Happy endings that are just a place to stop the story. Because look, I want the ending to be happy, but that’s merely a decision about where to stop telling it, right? So that’s my decision. But also I like to feel like the characters don’t just go into carbonite at that point, but carry on with their lives, good days and bad, and maybe not everything turns out how they want, but the point of the story is that they did have that perfect moment when it all worked out, and they can look back on it and feel like, at least for a fleeting second, everything was golden - because that’s all that anyone can ever ask for.
No-pressure tagging: @annerbhp, @geneeste, @holdouttrout, @ziparumpazoo, and @mylittleredgirl.

@ziparumpazoo replied to your post “the other day @anghraine got me thinking about...”:
straws and camel backs
ah, but that's a different animal! this one is an ambush predator. no build-up, no warning, just *bam* it jumps out and rips your face off. and then you walk around for the rest of your days with your face ripped off, unable to stop being mad about the existence of the thing that ripped your face off.
a better explanation might be the specific example we were talking about: there are so many things wrong with the 2005 film adaptation of pride and prejudice and i want to throw it off a cliff. since i want to throw all parts of it off a cliff about equally, you'd see it represented as a fairly straight line if you plotted it on a graph. wanting to throw it off a cliff exists in a more or less steady state of equilibrium, if you will. however! there's one anomalous point on the graph, just a massive spike that breaks the y-axis.
now, i know objectively that what that point represents is no more egregious a wrong than any of the other wrongs. but the petty gremlin inside me doesn't care about objectivity. the petty gremlin inside me wants to not only throw it off a cliff but also run it over a few times first and set it on fire, then rescue its charred drowned ass, resuscitate it, and do all of the running over, burning, and throwing off cliff again.
so in this example, as with the laundering of silk issue in an otherwise okay narrative, my reaction to The Thing Beyond Which I Cannot Get in each circumstance explodes out of a fairly steady state, is massively disproportionate, weirdly specific, follows no logic, and remains utterly perplexing even to me.

Hey Room - thanks for the all the gorgeous Longmire gifsets. I started this season with sooo much trepidation and really needed spoilers to get me to watch.
You’re very welcome, fellow fan! I started w/ no expectation and then they gave me EVERYTHING. I hope you’ll have a similar experience. ;)

Nostalgia Hour
A) Sometimes I legitimately want to go back and revisit the Gateverse fandom. My kids watched a bunch of the episodes recently and it was fun. I had fics I abandoned mid-stream because life happened that I really did plan to get back to someday. But when I come anywhere near the idea, or look at any of the old files, I cringe at myself SO HARD. Like, apparently I can toss off random < 1000 word ficlets for other fandoms, but the idea of doing that for Stargate makes me want to hide. I’m not sure why. Emotional connection to fandom is weird sometimes.
B) I just found this in a file of ideas I never wrote. It sounds like the sort of thing I used to brainstorm with @ziparumpazoo due to our mutual Vala love. Someone should write it for me someday, since I am clearly not going to!
five movies vala mal doran never saw
1)   The one the SGC interrupted 2)   The one when Adria stole her ‘date’ 3)   The one where she got distracted 4)   The one with the character assassination (?) 5)   The one where she went to a funeral instead

I was tagged by @amaradangeli for this thingy, thank you 😘.
Author’s Name: Sarah_M on AO3 and @delicatelie89 on here. Yes, I know they don’t match and that it’s confusing, but it’s too late to change things now.
Fandom(s) you write for: I only write fic for stargate sg1 sam/jack, or as they are also more affectionally called sackjam 👀.
Where you post: ⭐ Exclusively on AO3 ⭐
Most popular one-shot: Assuming this is hit based popularity contest, it’s Closing the Distance.
Favorite story you wrote: That’s... a really hard question. I like different fics for different reasons? I mean, there’s Perfectly Explainable and Setting the Mood because they both made me laugh when I wrote them. Closing the Distance and Desire because they were some of my first, I think, more successful smutty fic attempts. Stranded because it was a challenge to myself to write in a different style -- and more importantly lead me to start chatting with 🦄🌈 @sharim28. And I like Better Than Ice Cream because it’s so sweet and fluffy... LOOK, okay, I can’t pick one. You do it.
Story you were nervous to post: Every single one. Every time. Every. Time.
How do you choose titles: Who even knows. I sure don’t.
How many of your stories are complete: 19 of 20.
In progress: I’ll say one that’s currently on AO3, and one in my wip folder, since clearly someone *cough* @sharim28 *cough* wants me to write 🤖🍆💦.
Coming soon: Apparently 🤖🍆💦.
Upcoming story you are most excited to write: I guess I’ll say I am most excited to finish (lol... 😅 ) Losing Touch, however I will highlight that the word upcoming is incredibly relative here.
Do you accept prompts: Sure, there’s absolutely no harm is asking! But chances are I am only going to write it if it sparks something with me 🤷‍♀️.
Top five favorite authors: How dare you only let me pick five? Have I not already established that I cannot be trusted to keep a quota? I’ll will go with @sharim28 @amaradangeli @professortennant @nicehatgeorgia @joracwyn. But believe me: the list goes on and on.
I have no idea who has and hasn’t done this, so I’m going to just tag and bunch of you and feel free to do whatever with it! @sharim28 @samcaarter @missmil @joracwyn @pepperf @geneeste @nicehatgeorgia @professortennant @nellie-oleson @ziparumpazoo @supplyship and whoever else wants to play.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU!
Tagged by @reerox67 Thanks for letting me play!
Top 3 Ships
Like, ever? Or at the moment? Or who I read about? THIS IS A COMPLICATED QUESTION, people. I’m going with ones on my mind right now.
1 Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley
2 Tom Paris/B’Elanna Torres (I’m doing a rewatch, okay? I love these assholes)
3 Darcy Lewis/Steve Rogers
Currently Reading
Meryton Vignettes: Tales of Pride and Prejudice by Elizabeth Adams
A Princess in Theory: Reluctant Royals by Alyssa Cole
I’m a little behind at the moment, but I’ve also been reading uwontfeelathing’s His and Mine Are the Same series, which is a lovely Anne/Gilbert fic set post season three of Anne with an E.
Last Movie I Watched
My Neighbor Totoro. And now I am feeling the need to watch everything ever produced by Studio Ghibli.
Food I’m Craving
Pre-shelter-in-place, I used to have sushi like at least once a week. (It’s strange, I used to eat out quite a bit. I have not eaten a meal not prepared in my house in over 75 days.) So, I kind of miss sushi. And ramen. Basically the things I either don’t want to make at home or I haven’t had time to. I have made ramen completely from scratch before though. So if this goes on much longer I might break down and do that again. If trotters and pork belly are actually available anywhere. But what I really want now is a mimosa. Which I have the ingredients for. Hmmm....
Okay, let’s see what @bethanyactually, @lytefoot, @pepperf, @runawaymarbles, @ziparumpazoo, @holdouttrout, @weatheredskies, @stuckwith-harry, and @pinkdementors are up to these days, if y’all haven’t already done this.

Tagged by @rahleeyah to list my top five favorite pieces of my own content - sure!
1. ebb on with them who homeward go (TDBM, Jean character study, Lucien / Jean). Forever the story of my heart. This story is a meditation on choice and history and the ways we change. It untangles what it means to fall in love, and what it means to move on, and what it means to be married. It asks what it means to want things that cannot coexist, and how you try to find an answer you can live with. It asks how we love people who do things we hate. It is Jean in all her imperfect, frustrating glory, and I suspect I will always love it most.
2. life, and breath, and all things (Call the Midwife, Shelagh character study, Patrick / Shelagh). Another story that looks at how we make big decisions, and at the moments that those choices rest on. This is Shelagh in a series of moments over the course of her life from the death of her father through leaving the order. It asks why she joined and why she left, asks what it means to have a calling, and asks, like the story above, how to reconcile faith and love.
3. All the Means to Make Us One (TDBM, Lucien / Jean, explicit). Lucien and Jean’s wedding night, in which Jean is joyous and Lucien is bowled over by this entire experience. It is delicious and hot and perfectly in character and really fucking good.
4. Authentication (Leverage, Sophie character study, Sophie / Nate). I wrote this ages ago--it was my first Leverage story and one of my first really successful character studies. I love the way it plays with identity and what it means to Sophie to decide to be this version of herself when she has so many others available to her. You see here, in 2010 (original pub), all the themes that follow my work forward--agency and choice and what you gain and lose by deciding to be with someone. It remains a favorite.
5. All of My Tomorrows (City Homicide, Jen, Nick / Jen). There are very few pieces of fanfic--and even fewer that I’ve written--that I think of as definitive. Like, it’s fic. Anything can happen, there are lots of different interpretations of events. But this is the story that explains WTF was going on in Jen’s head (and with the plot) to make the series finale of City Homicide make any sense at all, and it...yes, this is what happened. It fills in the blanks in ways that make us understand and sympathize with Jen, and make Nick not a doormat, and give us hope for their future together. It’s totally canon, and I’m quite proud of that.
I tag... @pellucidthings, @annerbhp, @ziparumpazoo, @my-little-yellowbird, and @ajoblotofjunk and anyone else who wants to play!

OOooh I love these random games! Thanks @ginges-stuff for the tag!
Favourite colour: Teal
Last song I listened to: Roar by Katy Perry. My  kids are obsessed.
Favourite singers/bands: I love heaps. P!nk and Michael Buble and U2 and Missy Higgins and the Beatles feature pretty heavily on my playlist, but I’m terrible with remembering names and bands etc.
Last show I watched: The Gloaming on Stan, because it’s fun to watch places where I have lived on TV. Still withholding judgment on if I actually like this show.
Fav oc: What is OC?
Sweet, spicy, or savory: Why we have to choose? Probably sweet because chocolate. But omg CHEESE IS LIFE so savoury?
Sparkling water, tea or coffee: this is not even a choice. Coffee for shiz.
Pets: An old and decrepit dog who I’m sure is getting doggy dementia, a vicious crazy cat, a husband and two kids.
I tag @delicatelie89 @joracwyn @nicehatgeorgia @nellie-oleson @ziparumpazoo @amaradangeli @supplyship @mystupidumbflyboy and anyone else who wants to play! Please play!

Tagged by @bethanyactually! *mwah mwah darling* You know what I like about this one? British spelling! XD
Favourite movie trilogy of all time: Going to have to be OG Star Wars, with LotR a close second. I don’t love them as passionately since all the sequels, but there’s no other trilogy that really comes close.
Main character of the last book you read / a book you’re currently reading: Piranesi, from Piranesi by Susanna Clarke - a book I read for my book group, and wouldn’t have otherwise picked up because I did not get along with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell...but that would have been a shame, because it was very good! Her writing style is still not entirely to my taste, but it’s an extraordinary book, and we had such a great conversation about it - it’s so thinky.
Favourite colour combination: Green and purple.
Most common (food?) craving: Cheese, eggs...it used to be sweet things, but not so much any more. Although sometimes I just NEED baklava. If y’all would stop reblogging that scene from The Old Guard, that would really help, thx.
Favourite word: Marmalade.
Word count of the last writing piece you worked on: My current fic is 11,625 words and counting, I can’t seem to stop writing it.
Current obsession(s): Umbrella Academy s3, oh god I cannot wait. Also just generally Diego and Lila, my babiesssss.
No-pressure tagging @wheresmytowel, @joracwyn, @bending-sickle, @nicehatgeorgia, @ziparumpazoo, and anyone else who wants to do it.

Writer Tag Game
@anghraine was kind enough to tag me for this.
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 110. they're not all fic, though.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 386,718. again, it's not all fic, so let's call it an even 385K for the fic portion.
3. What are you top 5 fics by kudos?
A Wild and Distant Shore Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth/Darcy
Hearing Light Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth/Darcy
to suppose the truth of it possible Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth/Darcy
Drowning in the Absolute Yes Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth/Darcy
if you came this way Star Trek: Voyager, Janeway/Chakotay
4. Do you respond to comments; why or why not? for the sake of my mental health, i would prefer not to answer at this time. (i’m not being sarcastic. this is actually very difficult for me to talk about.)
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? probably Periapsis. Callisto’s just been raped by Zeus. we all know what happens next.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? i really don't know how to answer this. most of my fics have, at the very least, hopeful endings, and i think a lot depends on the context. for example, Elizabeth and Darcy are happy in both A Wild and Distant Shore and Hearing Light, but one is the happiness of a newly married couple still learning the joys of sexual intimacy with each other, whereas the other is the happiness of a newly engaged couple still in the first tremulous throes of requited love and attraction. how do you quantify which state is happier? to use a different sort of example, Harvest ends happily for Griet because she’s achieved a kind of freedom she never imagined, but i don't know how to compare that to, say, Mulder’s happiness at still being with Scully after so many years in and the world keeps beginning. there are different kinds of happiness is what i'm saying, and i don’t know how to judge the relative values.
7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest most absurd one you’ve ever written? how about we don’t use the word ‘crazy’ here? i’ve written a few crossovers, though i'm not a big fan of them. (as opposed to fusions, which i absolutely adore.) for most absurd, considering that Pride and Prejudice and Star Trek: The Next Generation are two of the unlikeliest canons to combine, Lydia, still has been a surprisingly well-received fic.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? if i have, it wasn't particularly memorable. i suppose it depends on how one defines 'hate' in this context. i know i've had comments from people who have not been happy with some aspect of a fic, or with me generally, but nothing i'd actually term hate. (truthfully? i'm kind of disappointed.)
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? there are kinds? i wasn't aware of this and i don't know what the categories are. amusing fact (at least to me): my most popular fic by kudos happens to be the first piece of smut i ever wrote. since then i've written a lot more, for a variety of f/f and f/m pairings, including various kinks, dub-con, non-con, and even alpha/omega (heavens to betsy!); however, my writing preference is people who love each other (even if they don't know/won't admit it), and those pairings make up the bulk of my smut fic.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? just the once, to my knowledge, and it was an extremely disappointing experience. a few years ago if you came this way was repackaged into a fic called Hired for Love by someone named cress26. and when i say it was disappointing, i mean... like, okay, i know i'm a solid writer. (that sentence notwithstanding.) obviously i'm no anne carson or a.s. byatt, but i'd give myself a solid B average for overall quality. so i guess i figured that if someone was going to steal my stuff, it would be because of that. but, no. instead of merely suffering the insult of being plagiarised, i was forced to also suffer the much, much worse indignity of having a story that is absolutely freakin' beautiful in places -- and i do say so myself -- taken apart and put back together like frankenstein's monster. seriously, even now, i am still so much more offended by how dreadful they made the fic than by the actual plagiarism. a copy and paste job i could understand! that fic is good, damn it! that is some A-grade shit right there. but how can anyone have so little respect for writing, or for language, just in general that they’d take something and then ruin it to claim it as theirs? ugh, it’s so dreadful.
...wanna see? ;D most of it is still available on the wayback machine.
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4
11. Have you ever had a fic translated? i feel like maybe someone did once ask me if they could? but i have no confidence that that actually happened, so i don’t know. anyway, i’ve got a blanket permission statement in my profile, so it’s possible that someone has translated something and i’m just not aware of it. or i was aware and i forgot. these are all possibilities. i’m a very unreliable narrator.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before? no. it's something i've long been interested in trying, and there have been a couple of people i've wanted to try it with, but i can only imagine i'd be a nightmare for someone else to work with, so i've never broached the topic.
13. What’s your all-time favourite ship? once upon a time i would've said Mulder/Scully but i'm sad to admit that's no longer the case. while Elizabeth/Darcy is now my most enduring ship, i really can't say it's my all-time favourite (though it's in the top 5, certainly). i think, at this point, given the word count devoted to them, and the number of hours i've spent thinking, writing, and making gifs of them, it's going to have to be Walt/Vic. our relationship is only six years old, but those six years represent an output that exceeds all the years of all my other ships combined.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? yeah, see, there's a reason why i don't post real WIPs. (with one current exception that i’m still actively working on). actually there are more than a hundred reasons, scattered across a variety of documents on my hard drive. i doubt i'll finish any of them, but this way no one’s disappointed except me, and i was disappointed to begin with.
15. What are your writing strengths? i'm able to compose grammatically correct sentences and i actually know what words mean. oh, sorry, was that overly sardonic? let me try again. sex and feelings. those are my strengths. i’m good at writing sex and i’m good at writing feelings and when you put those two things together you have most of my fic.
16. What are your writing weaknesses? getting bogged down in details or overly convoluted metaphors, anything resembling plot, actually writing things. (see above re: over a hundred WIPs.)
17. What are you thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? i'm pretty sure i've never had any thoughts on the topic. nobody told me there was a prerequisite for this meme!
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for? The X Files. the year was 2006 and i was 29. that's right, kids. i was late to the fandom party. also i am middle agéd. run away! run away!
19. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written? i don't have one. i feel affectionately towards some for different reasons; there are some i don't like at all; a few i'm particularly proud of, whether or not i actually like them. basically, my feelings about my own writing are very complicated. i will say that i think Darlin', everything's on fire is one of the best things i've ever written. even there some bits make me wince when i read it, though. (and now the song is stuck in my head again. damn it.)
▪︎
i will tag @sarking, @sqbr, @wendelah, and @ziparumpazoo if they feel like it, because they’re the only ones i can think of right now, but any other fic writers who want to participate, please consider yourself tagged. below you’ll find the list of questions (with my edit) for your convenience:
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 3. What are you top 5 fics by kudos? 4. Do you respond to comments; why or why not? 5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? 6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? 7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest most ridiculous one you’ve ever written? 8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? 9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? 10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? 11. Have you ever had a fic translated? 12. Have you ever co-written a fic before? 13. What’s your all-time favourite ship? 14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? 15. What are your writing strengths? 16. What are your writing weaknesses? 17. What are you thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? 18. What was the first fandom you wrote for? 19. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

oh hey
It's been a while. Posting now because I've been missing LJ and ye olde SG1 fandom. Just because, here are some fics that I've read and enjoyed recently: The Cottage AU series by @ziparumpazoo, starting with My Scars Healed. SG1, Really great Sam/Jack relationship study, with a side helping of Daniel and Jacob and little bit of action. In doorways and dreams, I run to you by @nellie-oleson SG1, Sam/Jack, beautiful and kinda heartbreaking but also really weirdly sweet. There's a nice team flavor, too. the consolations of philosophy by @ivorykeys09. Arrow, Oliver/Felicity, AU. I can never resist Secretly Married!Fic. Never. The Catherine Langford Knows Everything series by @nellie-oleson, starting with The Dating Game. SG1, Sam/Jack, Civilian!Sam AU. I really like Nellie's Jack voice, and I am huge sucker for Civilian!Sam AUs (as you will discover as you read the rest of these recs). Under Cold Blue Stars by @nellie-oleson. SG1, Sam/Jack, Continuum timeline AU. YOU GUYS. It's very good. Prepare yourself. Measure Twice, Cut Once by @nellie-oleson. SG1, Sam/Jack, Handyman!Jack AU. This is the fic that started this most recent S/J spiral, btw. Hideaways by @thesaltyavocado Arrow, Oliver/Felicity. Because of course. And also nostalgia. Too Busy Being Yours To Fall by andymcnope. Arrow, Oliver/Felicity. I LOVE the "we'll just get it out of our systems!" trope. It never works! There are feelings and shenanigans!
Every Plan is a Tiny Prayer to Father Time by @theshipsfirstmate. Arrow, Oliver/Felicity, post 4x09. UGH. So many awesome and painful POVs done so well in this fic, but especially Oliver and Donna at the end. If only we'd gotten this in the show. If only.
Lost & Found by @wagamiller. Arrow, Oliver/Felicity. I don't know how I got stuck on 4x09 fic, but here we are. So good.
Let Your Demons Run by mrspollifax. SG1, Sam/Jack, post-Entity fic. This is very much porn with plot and MY HEART, IT BREAKS.
The Convergence series by @annerbhp, starting with the fic of the same name. SG1, Sam/Jack, Pre-series to beginning of series AU. I just want to lay down and roll in this fic. Is that weird?
Rusted Wheel by @annerbhp. SG1, Sam/Jack, works as a standalone but is part of an unfinished series. There are post-Abyss fics, and then there's this. Like. Holy shit.
String Theory by @annerbhp. SG1, Sam/Jack, Civilian!Sam AU. This fic. THIS FIC. I just. I can't.

Day 8: Comfort (Stargate SG-1, Cassie & Teal’c)
Dec 1: Cozy (Carry On Series, Snowbaz) Dec 2: Ribbon (Carry On Series, Snowbaz) Dec 3: Red (Red White & Royal Blue, Alex x Henry) Dec 4: Light (Frozen, Elsa and Anna) Dec 5: Mistletoe (Carry On Series, Snowbaz) Dec 6: Icicle (Red White & Royal Blue, Alex x Henry) Dec 7: Warmth (Carry On Series, Snowbaz)
Okay. The outline of this fic was approximately 10,000 years old. Someone (@a-loquita? @ziparumpazoo? @supplyship?) prompted me to write SG-1 and pumpkin spice latte, and I’m pretty sure it was meant to be crack, but I’m me. Anyway then I hid it in my draft folder forever. But I think about it literally *every fall* when everything pumpkin spice comes back, so I finished writing it and am setting it free into the world. Domestic found family alien conspiracy stuff. ~1000 words. There’s reference Sam/Jack ship (because again, I am me) but they are not even in the room.
Day 8: Comfort
Cassie’s the first one up and into the kitchen, still in her t-shirt and pajama pants. An early-Sunday-morning stillness hangs around the house, even outside. The sun’s up, but not high, the light scattering softly through the turning leaves outside Jack’s kitchen window. She sets her phone to play tinny-sounding music over its speaker and sets it down on the narrow ledge above the sink.
It's not often they're all in the same place these days, what with Jack's job here in D.C., Cassie's classes at Georgetown, and SG-1's never-ending mission list that means on any given day they're still off-world more often than not.  Cassie sees Jack for dinner at least once a week - as long as the world's not actually trying to end - and she sees Sam about half the weekends she manages to make it to town. But this time Sam’s brought Daniel and Teal’c with her, and they’ve all holed up at Jack’s townhouse for the weekend.
Cassie doesn’t know what the reason for the convention is, and she knows better than to ask. She’s just glad to be able to see them, alive and not too much the worse for wear.
Even though they don’t get to do this often, their mornings have taken on a little ritual anyway. Daniel sleeps in. Right now he's ensconced in the guest room farthest from the kitchen, so there's no telling how late it'll be before he finally makes an appearance. Sam and Jack usually beat Daniel, but not by much – Cassie doesn't think it's likely that they're actually still asleep, given all those years of military discipline, but they spend so much time apart that she can't really begrudge them the time to themselves. Cassie and Teal'c, on the other hand, are the early risers. They share coffee and breakfast and poke fun at the others as they make their slow way out to join the world.
Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that Cassie mostly does the poking fun, while Teal’c tilts his head in agreement.
This morning, Cassie puts the coffee on first. While it brews, she pulls a tiny saucepan out of the cabinet, grabs the milk from the fridge, and starts poking through the pantry and the spice cabinet. By the time she’s standing in front of the stove stirring, Teal’c in the kitchen, too, getting out breakfast.
Bagels and cream cheese today, it seems.
Cassie takes down a mug from the cabinet by the coffee maker and fills it half with coffee and half with the milk concoction in her saucepan. She hesitates, then reaches up for a second cup. “Do you want some?” she asks.
Teal’c inclines his head, which Cassie takes as a yes.
Cassie sets the cup on the table in front of Teal'c and drops into the chair opposite him.  She wraps her hands around her own mug and lifts it up, resting the rim against her chin as she breathes in deeply.
“This does not smell like coffee,” Teal’c says.
Cassie laughs. “It’s not. Well, it is, but it’s not just coffee. It’s pumpkin spice, but not like that mass-produced stuff they sell in shops. It has actual pumpkin in it. I found a recipe because --”
She pauses, not sure if she’d really intended to say this out loud. Teal’c just waits, patient as always.
Well. She’d started to explain, so she might as well finish. “On Hanka, there was this drink we made - my mother made - for the harvest festival.” She taps her fingers on the side of the mug. “It reminds me of that.”
“It was harvest time on the planet we visited last week,” Teal’c says. “The children sang.”
“Badly, if my homeworld was any example.”
Teal’c’s lips turn up in a smile.
“I suppose it’s always harvest on some planet or other,” Cassie adds. That’s still hard to get her head around, even after all this time. Despite the fact that she came from a different planet herself, like some science fiction thriller. Like Superman, but without the powers or the kryptonite.
Teal’c nods. “I take great comfort in the vastness of the universe.”
Cassie doesn’t think he really means it, or at least not the way the words imply. Teal’c values the little things too much, quietly treasures his friends and comrades-in-arms. He’s sitting here with her at this dining room table drinking coffee with too much pumpkin made from a recipe Cassie had found on the internet. The vast universe, the larger story - those matter, but these small moments, honor among friends, love among family, are the reason why.
That’s what she’s come to believe, anyway.
“Have you shared this with the others?” he asks then, and Cassie’s sure she’s right.
She shrugs. "Sam doesn't like pumpkin. Jack doesn't like frou frou coffee, or so he claims – though I once caught him with a Starbucks cup that I'm pretty sure was caffe mocha."  Teal'c raises an eyebrow, and Cassie points a finger at him sternly. "But don't tell him I said so."
"I will not."
"Daniel just looks at me like he knows, and sometimes I can't ..."  Cassie shrugs.  "He knows, but he doesn't know."
“Then it is my honor, Cassandra Fraiser, to share.”
He takes a drink of the coffee. He doesn’t make a face, because Teal’c never makes faces, but Cassie can tell. "You don't like pumpkin either,” she accuses.
He doesn’t answer. “May your harvest be fruitful,” he says instead, very seriously, and continues drinking his coffee in a way that seems like a ritual.
Cassie laughs and leans back in her chair, still smiling as she sips from her own mug. She looks out into the bright autumn colors and feels it all the way to her toes. Love, and peace, and gratitude for this weird little family that took her in and let her make a new home.

I was tagged by the lovely @amaradangeli and @samcaarter for this thingy -- thanks for thinking of me. 😘
rules: if you had to pick only five movies to watch for the rest of your life what would they be? and what is your favorite snack to go with it.
I’m not so much a movie person -- I’m a tv show person -- so this actually really hard for me. I am super tempted to just break all the rules, but that sounds like invoking chaos and probably leads to nothing but madness.
Disney’s Alice in Wonderland (1951)
Labyrinth (1986)
Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) -- that’s right, that’s three in one
Harry Potter (2001-2011) -- all of them, yep, eight in one, I am a monster
Look I can’t pick another one (pretty sure I’ve already well exceeded my quota), but I will, for the sake of it, rattle off a few other movies I’ve really enjoyed: Knives Out, The Gentlemen, Interstellar, Inception, The Martian, and I am also a complete whore for animated Disney movies so sign me up.
SNACKS!
Lollies (probably of the sour variety... or banana lollies)
Haagen Dazs salted caramel ice-cream
Snickers chocolate bars
Samboy atomic tomato potato chips
The Popcorns Mans’ kettle-corn popcorn
But we haven’t even discussed beverages yet? It’s vodka and coke.
I tag @sharim28 @professortennant @joracwyn @nicehatgeorgia @nellie-oleson @ziparumpazoo @geneeste @supplyship @eska-flowne and anyone else who wants to attempt this.
