La domanda più frequente che mi è stata fatta? Ma non si lamentano i vicini? Hai pensato alla batteria elettronica? Risposta: no, non si lamentano. Si ci ho pensato e ho valutato questa opzione. Per anni ho avuto difficoltà a studiare In casa per ovvi motivi di “rumore”. Una batteria acustica, in centro paese è vista come avere un cantiere sotto casa per qualsiasi vicino. (Magari un giorno inizieranno a vedere i musicisti come sonorità e non baccano. Non è questo il giorno). Finalmente dopo anni ho trovato la soluzione migliore per me. Le misure di un’acustica, il volume di una batteria in cuffia. Zero lamentele e massima resa. Ovvio bisogna scendere a compromessi e ogni tanto mi manca il suono reale delle pelli! Ma in questi anni, soprattutto questi ultimi due anni è stata una salvezza. Consiglio a tutti di pensare a questo home kit. Ne vale la pena. Drum: Tama club jam con Pelli mesh sulle battenti di kick, tom e floor tom. Sullo snare ho preferito tenere la pelle originale e utilizzare un pad sopra per tenere il suono della cordiera e che soprattutto ricordasse un rullante e non solo il suono del rim. Zildjian Co. (the oldest company in the US that is still wholly family owned) posts the history of how the company relocated from Constantinople to Boston, but fails to mention why and the fact that the Zildjian family is Armenian. To say as an Armenian (with grandparents who were Armenian Genocide survivors) and a player of Zildjian cymbals, I’m disappointed, is an understatement.

Also, the story is not that “romantic”. The Sultan Osman II the Young gave Avedis I, an alchemist (during he experimentation discovered an alloy of silver, copper, and tin that when flattened into a sheet it could make musical sounds while still being durable enough not to shatter) the name Zildjian (Zilciyân) – (zil is Turkish for "cymbal," ci means "maker", and ian is the Armenian suffix meaning "son of"), and Avedis Zildjian began to manufacture cymbals mainly for the Mehter, Ottoman military bands consisting of wind and percussion instruments, which belonged to the Janissaries. Mehter ensembles performed during battle and played courtly music for Ottoman rulers. The Zildjians also produced some instruments for Greek and Armenian churches, and for Sufi dervishes. Zildjian worked primarily for the Sultan’s court. In 1623, because he was an Armenian (a minority in the Ottoman Empire), the Sultan had to grant him special permission to leave the palace to start his own business. He set up shop in a suburb of Constantinople named Psamatia, and began to produce cymbals commercially.

I’ll spare the details of business disputes between the Zildjian cousins and the infamous story of Avedis II’s son, Aram’s (who had become head of the family) involvement in the attempted assassination of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II (for his many atrocities against Armenians) in 1905. Bottom line, they had to flee the country as things became increasingly volatile for Armenians.
