Chapter 1

Quivering, Zero let Kirby shoot at him without attacking back. Their fight had gone on for hours, leaving the leader of the Dark Matter drained, miserable, and hopeless. Had he even hit Kirby once?

Zero just shielded his eye by squeezing it shut. Then he heard his halo shatter, feeling the rush of pain from being stabbed by a Crystal Gun shard rush down his head soon after. He'd been hit at his old battle wound. Thrashing, he tried to avoid what he knew would come. As Kirby and Ribbon shot his weakest spot, Zero felt his body begin to break. He was losing the ability to move, to think, even the sadness he could never evade. He was about to die, again.

He awoke in a white space, floating in an empty void. There was no ground and no gravity. Zero was alone in a place he'd been only once before, when he'd died the first time. He had waited for what felt like years in that nothingness, in a limbo of sadness, rage, and a twisted vengeance towards all those that could feel happiness, and Kirby. He had vowed to leave this place so he could destroy that pink ball. And somehow he had. But now he'd come back. And had it really been worth it, to die again because of jealousy? He didn't think so. Now he just wanted to stop being so unhappy.

Unlike before, Zero stayed floating there. With no way to measure time, he had no idea for how long, but it felt much longer than the last. He began to wonder if it'd be forever. He hoped not. He was tired, emotionally drained. Wishing to fade away until he felt nothing, he yearned for absence. He no longer wanted to fight the feelings trapped within. A new tiredness began to encroach on his mind, a desire to fall asleep. One that had never happened before in this world. He accepted it. But as he was about to drift away, a voice startled him.

"If you fall asleep, you'll really die." The voice said from no clear direction at all. "Do you truly want to give up?"

Zero opened his eye. "Who are you?" He looked around for this strange person, but couldn't find them. "Show yourself!"

There was a moment of silence. "Alright."

When Zero turned around after that, he saw a pink creature much like the one he'd hated for so long. "Kirby." He glared at them.

"No." The stranger said calmly. "This is just the form I can most easily take."

Zero stared at the look-alike carefully. He noticed that even though it seemed to be Kirby, thin, colorful veins ran through the puff's entire body, moving like ripples in the water. And it's eyes looked back like a black abyss. This wasn't Kirby.

"Then who are you?" Zero asked again.

The creature didn't answer. Instead, it watched him with a tilted head until it said. "I can send you back, you know."

"Back where, the Gamble Galaxy?" Zero scoffed. "No thank you."

"You really do give up." The creature paused. "I can give you happiness."

Zero narrowed his eye. "How?"

"If that is the reason for which you wish to return, then you will have it." The creature said.

"And that's it?"

"You'll have to work for it still, but yes, you'll be able to feel happiness." The creature became thoughtful. "But you will have to promise me something if you want to go back."

"Which is?"

"To never take vengeance with you when you leave. Don't try to hurt the world for not giving you happiness in the first place, that's it."

"And you're sure this will make me able to feel joy?" Zero said after a moment.

The creature nodded with a small smile.

With a sigh, Zero said, "Alright, I promise. Now, how do I leave?"

"Just concentrate on what you want as you fall asleep. I'll do the rest."

Zero shut his eye and began to drift off. As he did though, he thought he heard the stranger whisper, "Good luck, because Dreamland needs it."
