2023: A Year of Connection

Hi everyone!

As I told you last month, this month's "devlog" will be more like an end-of-year recap. For those of you who have known me a while, you'll know that I get ~in my feels~ and Very Nostalgic at the end of the year. And this year is no exception to that.

Looking back on this year, I realize I did much more than I thought I did. The year was filled with so many waves of uncertainty, burnout, and ruts, that I felt like I wasn't accomplishing anything in the moment. Now that the year has actually wrapped up, I can see that was Once Again my imposter syndrome whispering words of sweet nothings into my ears.

In fact, this year, I find that I did Way More than what I did last year. Crazy, considering how busy I remember 2022 being. Let's take a walk down memory lane, shall we?

Writing

If there is one thing this bitch did, it's fucking write LFMASODIJ. For all my complaining this year of routes taking too long, getting creative ruts, etc., I still wrote (what I consider) a Very Good amount. While I may not have hit my writing goals that I had set out, I still ended up writing around 255k words in total this year. Most of this being for Alaris, and some of it being for my dissertation (LOL) and other side games, like Intertwine and Jam Games.

This number also doesn't include deleted passages, edited passages, etc., so the amount I've spent writing, reviewing, etc. was Significant this year. Here's to hoping that momentum continues into next year and finishing the rest of Alaris!

Side Games

Something completely unexpected, but that I'll forever be grateful for, was my decision(s) to join game jams this year. It all started with Otojam, a visual novel jam I'd wanted to join for a WHILE.

Intertwine was, without a doubt, one of my most memorable moments from this year. The friends I made/grew closer to during that jam. The people I connected with because of Intertwine. The people I got to work with. Everything about the experience surpassed my expectations, and Van and Summer 2023 will always hold a very special place in my heart because of it. Thank you to everyone who enjoyed that game. It was my first full game I ever released, and I couldn't have been more nervous about it (no literally. I wasn't sleeping and I was nauseous for a week before release).

Knowing there was no "revision" afterwards that I could hide behind or promise that there would be a "better"/"enhanced" version made the release terrifying. But the reception you all gave to it and support from so many friends made me feel so connected and grateful for the community.

The other three side projects were... well, Unexpected. LOL. Before these jams, I'd never wanted to work in team settings, mostly because I have Mad Imposter Syndrome, and I've always imagined I'd be dead weight in any given game dev team. My skills on writing, art, and/or coding alone aren't "exemplary" enough for me to think I, well, deserve to be on a team. But when a couple of short jams were being held by a friend, and teams were being made filled with other friends, I thought maybe I could help, even if it's just to QA/playtest. But I've walked away from each of these experiences learning so much from other talented people and with very dear friends.

Each of these side games truly tested my chops in terms of writing, narrative design, and coding. But I'm glad I challenged myself to take part in each of these experiences because I've walked away with so much more than I would've expected.

Alaris

As much as I may have talked about how I Wasn't making progress on this baby. I, in fact, made A LOT of progress:

I'm going to be Real with you all. I'm not in the mood to recap everything for Alaris in the way I did with everything else LAFKMSDFOIJWOEI. Main reason being, I do that Every Month, and at this point, I would feel like I'm repeating myself for no reason. But let me tell you, when the Enhanced Demo comes out, you will see what I'm talking about with progress made. And I'm excited for the next year when I start getting to show things off (read: Demo Release and Route Beta Releases) now that assets have really come together ^^

I will say, thank you for sticking with this project for so long. It's easy to get bogged down in development when a project like this is as big as it is. It's just as easy to think that no one will care about this by the time I release, or people will start losing their patience with me as development goes on. So I'm forever grateful for how kind, supportive, and patient you all are, especially this year <3

Connections: The True Theme of 2023

If you've made it this far, I'm extremely impressed with you. And to reward you, I'll give you a moment of honesty and vulnerability which, to be frank, I Don't Do as a person and especially with my dev persona LMFAOO ((Before I do, let it be known, CW: mention of death, grief, alcoholism, chronic illness, suicidal thoughts))

Something I don't talk about much is that for all of 2022 and most of 2023, I was not in a good place mentally. At the beginning of 2022, I lost three very important people in my life back-to-back (I'm not exaggerating when I say back-to-back it was within 2 weeks, three separate deaths lol). That, on its own, was hard to deal with. But on top of that, I soon found myself having to cope/help with a family member's chronic illness and another family member's mental health (read: alcoholism, suicidality).

While this isn't a particularly unique situation, it was one that I found myself struggling with pretty severely on top of a pretty demanding work life. And it was a situation I found myself in until about midway through this year. Things have lightened up. I navigate a new life with some pretty severe triggers, and without the presence of some of my most loved ones. But overall, I at least feel like I can breathe and function, which is a state I didn't feel like I could exist in for over a year (and started to believe I may never exist in again).

Because of this new room in my life, I was able to connect with people again, in a more genuine way. I've grown closer to a lot of dev friends, to the point I consider some of them genuine close friends. And IRL, I've been able to reconnect with some of my dearest loved ones. The main reason I bring all of this up is because this year, I felt unbelievably connected to people, whether that was dev friends in the community, people who support my games, and IRL people.

And sometimes, when you interact with people solely online, it's easy to think they don't care as much about you as you do for them. But this has been disproven to me time and time again this year. And I've found myself in a state of appreciation for so many of the people I've been blessed to meet and befriend <3 I felt this especially so during some of the game jams, with the Secret Santa gift exchange, and with my recent Holiday Tree.

So thank you for everyone who has let me take up some space in their life. You literally Do Not Know how much it means to me and impacts me. This year, while I started it in a state of slightly hopelessness and numbness, I find myself ending it with gratitude and connection.

I hope the rest of this year (the very few couple of days we have left LOL) treats everyone well. I'm excited for how we get to start 2024 and what we'll get to experience together <3 Thank you again for the memories and support, love you all very dearly ^^

Rika's Guardian Ceremony

It was during a time when they both had a spare moment, after some discussion and the eventual weight of Rika coming to accept Yuri's request...they would meet with all the quiet ceremony this meeting would entail.

On a night when the moon shone down on the still surface of the Sacred Lake. Not even a passing breeze shook it, leaving the glass-like surface to truly reflect the sky above. A lone figure waited there in the middle of it all, like a celestial being standing among the stars, practically glowing under the moon.

With the symbol of her birth right clearly shown on her forehead and arrayed in the gauzy, silvery white clothing of some long forgotten monarch, Yuri smiled at her friend who came to call. All of this was arranged for her, to make this moment a little more special.

Spring was here, evident in the lilies that Yuri favoured so to have already bloomed or begin blooming all around the Sacred Lake. They gently swayed in the moving wind, making it look like they were following the Moon Maiden's steps as she came to greet Rika at the edge of the shore.

The priestess' hands came out, palms up, beckoning to be taken.

"Tonight, I will commemorate this moment in which my dear friend comes to make an oath. To become a Guardian is to become a protector in times of peril, in times of hardship and danger and never turning away. In taking on this oath, this title, you understand what your role will be until the moment that death claims either one of us."

When the affirmation came eventually, Yuri lifted up Rika's left hand, while also keeping a level gaze into the other woman's eyes. All around them, the wind picked up again, tugging at their clothes, blowing their hair. Something was coming; a small mist was rolling in as Yuri brought that hand closer and closer to her lips.

"I'm sure you'll do great."

And at that moment Yuri's lips made contact with Rika's hand, the contract would be sealed. The world around them shifted suddenly, Yuri herself even disappearing right before Rika's eyes. As a golden crescent began to form on the back of her left hand where Yuri had kissed it, giving her the official blessing and title of a Guardian, the world slowly stopped spinning.

Moon filtered through a canopy now, the place both something out of a dream, yet still so real. Full of rolling fog and an aura of mysteriousness. The ethereal white mist coalesced together, then ebbed away slowly revealing a stranger in a mask. Wolf-like in nature, with a steely gaze, the wolf must mean something to the person now making way towards Rika, a shield at their side.

"Rika..." the apparition spoke, "...O blessed child of my blood..."

Her voice had a rough tint to it, with an accent she'd probably never heard of before, but this person's voice would resonate with the trainer's soul as familiar at a deep level. Resonating within her blood.

"I am from a time long ago...I am of your blood and you are of mine. Where you step, the radiance of your brethen follow...or so it should. It must be so difficult for you."

The person with the cyan wolf's mask seemed to sigh, head tilting to the side a moment, before straightening up and reaching out to her.

"You...us...we are not the kind to be held back. Those of our blood...we shine best when we do not hold back. As my descendant, I see this and I feel so proud."

A mote of light appeared in her palm, now floating over carefully to Rika, just hanging there in the air, waiting to be taken.

"Long ago I held this title, and so with it, this Blessing...my blessing will now become yours as does the duty that comes with it. Accept it well and protect the Fated Maiden on the path ahead, as well as yourself."

The light dropped into Rika's hand, slowly ebbing into a gentler glow, revealing a ring. The physical manifestation of a Blessing from a Legendary that had been won previously by Lady Aya, now passed to Yuri to give to Rika. So many Guardians had been appointed with this ring and yet, it would hold a more special connotation between Rika and the ghostly ancestor that appeared.

The backdrop melted away and she would be back at the Sacred Lake, with Yuri, the ring waiting to be put on and her new mark as a Guardian etched into her skin on the back of her left hand. If she turned it just so, the little golden crescent moon could glint when it caught moonlight. It pulsed with new power, manifesting something from within. A representation of her will, of something ready to bubble up....

"Congratulations, Rika. You have attained the title of Guardian."

Matt Maltese. Sad boy music that's so so good and makes me feel so much pain and catharsis. Also a lot of his songs are byler/Mike coded. You deserve an Oscar, shoe, everyone adores you, outrun the bear (byler will pov), as the world caves in, strange time (its second or third line is literally "and we'll both gladly lose our minds LIKE!!). Also paper thin hotel is tom wambsgan's song, and tom wambsgan's alone.

Lucas GODDAMN Sinclair. Need I say more? Doesn't matter cus I'm gonna- I genuinely believe he's the best written and performed character in the whole show, he's my sweet child ray of sunshine I love him dlfkgkfdn and he would NOT be the same without what Caleb brings to the table in his performance. And since day ONE he fucking ATE I keep putting EMPHASIS on so many WORDS but I digress. I do understand the problems with some of his writing which sucks but he is still incredible and you can tell that Caleb cares so much about him which I always love to see

The oh hellos album dear wormwood. Omg. Omfg. It's fucking TRANSCENDENT. ANYONE READING THIS WHO HAS GONE THROUGH/IS GOING THROUGH A TOXIC OR ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP OF ANY KIND LISTEN TO THIS IT IS SO HEALING. Not only is it cathartic asf but it depicts the anger and regret and pain and resignation and fucking every emotion under the sun that you experience in those kinds of relationships. And just how connected all of the songs are. The album itself is a loop, seriously. The last part of Thus Always to Tyrants (the final song on the album) leads right into the beginning of Prelude. And while we're on the subject of thus always to tyrants can we talk about how fucking impactful it is to end the album on that note? On a bittersweet toast to the people who hurt us because there is no getting rid of what they did, only making yourself stronger from it and healing?!!? About the notion that what they did was terrible but that is something you'll never forget because you can't but you're moving on to better things, wondering if they will change/have changed from who you knew them as?!??! ARE YOU FUCKNG KIDDING ME!!!!! AND just how connected the lyrics and melodies are in all of the songs. I've listened to the whole album easily over a hundred times and I still notice new lines that relate to each other or when bg melodies in one song are the main motif (?) of another. You can tell how much care and thought and love and emotion was put into its creation and I love it so so so much. Also if you dear reader do not want to spend 40 min listening to the album please please please just listen to Pale White Horse and Where is Your Rider. Oh. My. Fucking. God. Jesus fuck these songs. I'm just typing about them and I got chills like. I'm not joking at all when I say these songs actually changed my life. And the interconnectedness of them (sorta like a horse and its rider?) is just so special. They're whole fucking experiences to listen to and I will never get tired of it. do you have any advice on how to get better at backgrounds? I’ve always really loved how you do them (particularly ones in natural settings with lots of trees and foliage and whatnot—I remember being so impressed when you were posting wips of your hieron art for the f@tt pinup zine because you were painting individual leaves)

I struggle with them so much that they’re not fun, and I’m never motivated to practice because, well, they’re not fun 😅 I think my biggest problems are making characters look like they’re actually In An Environment, and knowing how much detail to include or leave out, and you seem to be really good at both those things. I would take literally any advice about any aspect of bg painting that you might have though, even if it’s just like. pointing me to a book or a youtube tutorial lol

i think... the most accessibly practical suggestion i have for putting bodies in environments is to draw in layers - as in, if part of a body is hidden? draw it. make sure you're accounting for every limb even when you can't see it, and while you're doing that, think about how something would feel rather than what it would look like.

i see a lot of advice that's "think about how it looks and not how it works" and maybe that is better for composition (i have NO art education, no qualifications to speak on that) - but i suggest thinking about how things feel, physically. you don't have to know about all the bones in a body, you just have to think about how it would feel to be in that environment and in that position.

i want to put a body at x angle, and it looks fine… but what's that hidden arm doing? does it have enough space to fit comfortably between those bodies or against that rock? could i hold my weight up like that? how long could i hold my weight up like that? if im trying to depict a relaxed scene, then thinking about how comfortable something is is essential - environmentally that includes … how many sticks are on the ground? sure the pose would work inside, but would there be rocks or sticks that suddenly make putting weight there painful? if yes then i need to either change the pose or set up the environment in a way that justifies it (and so i have to think, are they on moss (and if so then now i've got to set up an environment where thick moss might grow) or are they in a sheltered place that would have less fallen sticks (now i have to add overhangs or visibly cleared ground or or or)?

other than that.. trial and error. measure twice cut once? eyeball it and cut ten times and by the end of it you'll have a decent understanding of what range of measurements work and why.... i'm the artistic equivalent of those (bad) jokes about men never asking for directions, so unfortunately i don't have any easy resources (i'll google when i can't figure out how to get something to work in a program (and then inevitably learn that i've been doing things a roundabout hard way the whole time) but that's about it).. both while making the art and how i'm existing in space… if i hadn't put myself in so many uncomfortable situations i wouldn't know how painful it is to sit against a rigid curved surface, how likely i was to slide down a hill with x amount of leaves on it, etc etc)

Oc songs and their meanings

Hello! no one asked for this but that's ok because I shall still provide

As of now I've made 3 oc albums, 4 if you count the 3.5 one I just did but nonetheless all the oc songs I make have meanings tied to lore

some more complex than others and I will be explaining a few

Volume 1 has like...5 songs? The first two are chase songs between my main characters Mary , Jordan , Seth , and Laurence. In the first song Mary is running from a possessed patient and in the second Jordan and Laurence are chasing/fighting each other. These two don't get along (if I choose to talk more here I'll explain why). The other songs are kinda just bg music except Jordans theme. One thing you'll notice in his theme is the Mary had a little lamb bit I put in it. That's because of his mask, it's a lamb lol.

Volume 2 is an album I don't like as much as the others but it's like almost 30 minutes long so it'd be a crime not to say anything about it. For this album it's mostly ambient creepy bg music I tried cooking up. Not too much lore here except Mary wandering around the facility. I PROBABLY SHOULD TALK ABOUT THE ART COVER MEANINGS AS WELL HOLD UP-

For the art cover of this Mary is holding a lamb which kinda ties into the whole Mary had a little lamb motif thing I got going on in my story. Fun fact this whole project started years ago when I was like what if Mary had a little lamb was like...evil?

Volume 3 Is probably the most lore filled out of them all and if I talk about all of it I will most likely NOT shut up so I will just talk about a few songs from there...

Jordan is on the cover clawing his way on the floor of the basement trying to save his own butt. This album I was very experimental in terms of music genres I produced. Starting off with ANOTHER chase song this time instead of Mary just running she fights back! This is due to my songs taking place during different times in my story.

Second song is about Jordans experimentations because why not. (I'm holding back SO much lore right now not even joking) Can't remember what number song this is but there's a song about Mary and Laurence straight up ARGUING. But for good reason though. Both of them genuinely can't see the others perspective on the situation at hand because they are both preoccupied with what they think is morally correct. Laurences theme is in the album, I tried to make it sound detectivey if you could call that a word. Because she's well...a detective. Last few songs on this album are more for atmospheric purposes about the washed up beach city they live in. Last few more songs are fighting music when my main characters duke it out.

Volume 3.5

Not much to say just a bunch of bg music about Laurence and my oc's Clarissa and Deacon.

they literally don't even have to freaking fight each other all the time, but due to their father always pinning them against each other they literally fight all the time. growing up it was always one gets praised and the other don't, it was never both of them getting praised by their father. so if shuya did something good, he got praised..while shao got slandered (and vice versa).

shao actually was sad as hell when shuya got shipped off to the states. cause literally tasks that were meant for the two sons now were all given to him and maybe he would miss his big bro a lil bit.

in the next chapter of sculptures it's mentioned that shuya have a dislike for shao's mom, which is due to him speculating/assuming that shao's mom and his dad was having an affair while his mom and father were still together (he'll go through character development for this info okay)

both sato brothers are left handed, but it's shuya who can shoot a gun with both his left and right hand. their father also tried to change that about them.

shuya is fluent in three languages, which is english, japanese, and french. shao's fluent in english, japanese, and spanish. their father is an overachiever okay?

shuya ran away when he was 13. he literally went to his grandmother's house, but by time his ass got their his father was already there.

shuya's an aries and shao's a capricorn.

shuya highkey can not hold his liquor, he is a lightweight compared to shuya who can drink and drink and drink!

when they were younger, other than high disciplined self-defense classes. shuya took up volleyball in high school while shao did swimming and student council.

We really don't care the bikes are too big for us too even at 8 ft they're gigantic they're way too much for the power to weight ratio and when you get on them the frame is stressing because the motor weighs so much granted these would be smaller we think they'll put smaller motors that are more efficient than the bigger bikes it's a smart idea and I need a three in the Sportster is better you can start with that I mean we're really kind of little bigger but we're not that much bigger and these bikes are too big they're gigantic and yeah it was a person who's heavy and the motor is ridiculous you can't ride it at all
