Your Fave Has Anosmia: Figueroth “Fig” Faeth
Tumblr media
Carried a dead oyster around in a glass of water for a month without noticing its cadavarine stench. Possibly inherited the condition from her biological father Gortholax the Insatiable, who’s demonic condition causes all food to turn to ash before it passes his lips.

An Important Message from the Stop That Ninjas
Now that the Hogwarts Legacy game has been released, we wanted to give some clarification on how YFHA$ is going to handle Wizarding World content going forward, both here and in the Discord server.
To be clear: we strongly condemn JKR and the bigoted and imperialist themes present in her work. These concerns are present in the original Harry Potter books/movies, post-canon sources such as Pottermore, and the newer releases such as Fantastic Beasts and Hogwarts Legacy. We stand with the LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities, among others, against these harmful behaviors. If you disagree, you are not welcome in our space.
Now for the housekeeping:
Both our blog and Discord have always been discourse-free zones. The bolded statement above is our official position. Any further commentary, either in our Discord server or in our Tumblr mentions/asks, will be deleted and those commenters shall be blocked. This is to protect our mental health as well as that of the people who follow us for anti-Autism $peaks catharsis.
We are still putting together a final rule as to whether we will continue to accept flag requests from the Wizarding World franchise, as well as what to do with any requests that may be in our inbox. We have a massive backlog from before Corona that we are still working through. What we can tell you is that we will not be deleting any flags that are already published on the blog as of today, February 10th 2023.
If you are a member of the Discord server, please see the #announcements channel for further guidelines.
We are aware of the close relationship many autistic people have with fandoms, and we know it's not easy to just discard a special interest. That said, we also have to be cognizant of the communities who have been harmed by this situation. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Imagine Number One: Hair Dye Prank
Remember...
YN means your name
YFHA means your favorite hair accessory
YHH means your Hogwarts house
YFC means your favorite color
YSN means your surname
Draco X Reader
"Ugh! Fred! George!" You squealed, feel the cold feeling on your head. You touch your head and saw a YFC liquid in your fingers.
"Sorry, YN!" One of them said, you feel kinda weird now. You look at your bestfriend Chloe and she giggled.
"Don't laugh!" You warned her, as soon as she stopped, you catch some of your breath.
"Is their any paint on my clothes?" You asked her, she shook her head. Thank Merlin, you bet Fred and George used permanent paint for this.
"You should wash your hair, it's a good thing we can use it." Chloe said, it's a Saturday so it's a good idea. And Chloe's older brother is Prefect so you guys can use the Prefects' Bathroom.
After using the Prefects' Bathroom, you noticed that the paint didn't come off. Chloe then tells you that Fred and George said that they used permanent hair dye on your head. Now your in a very bad mood, he last thing you want is hearing Malfoy and his comments.
You look at yourself in the mirror, it's kinda not bad. The hair, you look beautiful. You decided to wear YFHA (Or if you want, you don't have a hair accessory on) in YFC so it looks great.
Unfortunately, while you were strolling around the halls, Malfoy and his friends were laughing at your hair.
"What happened, YSN?" Malfoy asked, he ruffled it and laughed with his mates. As soon as his mates leave, he kisses your cheek and smiles at you.
"Should I tell you you beautiful with that hair color, YSN? Keep it up."
He then walks away and leaves you blushing, is this for real?

Meet Sandy Blaine
Meet Sandy Blaine Nina Zolotow

Tumblr media
Hello, Yoga for Healthy Aging readers! Like you, I imagine, I’m delighted to see the return of the blog. And I’m also very pleased to be joining as a regular contributor.
Here is a little about me: A longtime yoga practitioner and teacher, I graduated from the Berkeley Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies Program in 1995, and co-founded Alameda Yoga Station that same year. After a long run and three different studio spaces Alameda Yoga Station closed in 2013, but continues to live on in Alameda in some sense in its new incarnation as Leela Yoga, where I can still be found teaching public classes twice a week, currently via Zoom.
In 2000 I was invited to join the Yoga Room’s faculty, and taught teacher training classes there from 2000 and 2015, when I left to go to graduate school. Nina Zolotow, class of 2006, was among my students. Nina’s interest in yoga philosophy and exploring the emotional and energetic aspects of asana practice helped inform my approach to the workshops I’ve taught on developing a personal yoga practice. Later she and I co-taught a series of classes for the Yoga Room on practicing yoga for emotional balance.
In addition to my pieces for YFHA, I have written for Yoga Journal, Yoga International and other publications (a full list can be found here) and have written two books, Yoga For Healthy Knees and Yoga For Computer Users, both published by Rodmell Press and currently available from Shambhala Publications.
I am especially interested in the psychology of yoga and the connections between physical wellness and mental/emotional health. I completed my Master’s in Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania in 2016, and I am currently writing a book about the mind/body connection to overall happiness. My previous posts for YFHA have been on those topics, and I plan to continue my series on positive psychology and yoga. I’m also planning to write about how sheltering in place during the pandemic has affected my practice and my teaching.
I’m looking forward to exploring these topics and discussing them with you in the months to come!

It’s that time once again, it’s Pride Month!
This Pride Month is a little different than most. We’re getting back to normal in a pandemic and while some countries are reopening, others are not or are taking it a bit slower. There probably won’t be any parades, just as there wasn’t last year, and we’re in the middle of two civil rights movements as well; Black Lives Matter and Stop Asian Hate. We here at YFHA$ support both movements; we support Black people and we support Asian people, neurodiverse or not, LGBT+ or not. It is now we must remember that there would be no Pride without people of colour.
As we have done in previous years, we will be posting a flag a day for the LGBT+ community. We are not using the most popular flags; these have been drawn in a random order, so we ask for your patience as we go through the month and the thirty pre-made flags. We will not be doing the straight pride flag or the straight ally flag as we feel that it derails attention away from the communities that need it most. We do appreciate our allies and our allies are more than welcome to reblog any of our flag offerings this month as long as they don’t start discourse-though ‘don’t start discourse’ goes for everyone.
Anyone we catch in the notes starting discourse will be instantly banned. That goes the same for anyone derailing a post. Pride is a time to be happy and supportive of the LGBT+ communities. Pride is a time to band together and fight for the rights of those in the LGBT+ communities, regardless of background or identity. It is not a time to be ripping each other apart. As the saying goes; “a house divided against itself cannot stand”.
So please, this Pride month, we ask you to uplift LGBT+ people, especially already marginalised LGBT+ people; black LGBT+ people, Asian LGBT+ people, Jewish LGBT+ people, Muslim LGBT+ people, Latino LGBT+ people, disabled LGBT+ people, indigenous LGBT+people.
We hope everyone feels included and welcome. There’s no place for hate of any kind on this blog.
Happy Pride!

New Practices and Techniques I'm Exploring Lately
Glazed Cruller in Space by Kenny Scharf
In my post My Evolving Home Practice ) in April of this year I described some of the main things I had been focusing on in my home practice. Although it has not been a full year since my last check in with you all, there are two different ways of practicing I’ve been experimenting with that I felt warranted an update.
Making Space in Joints
One of the most common complaints I hear from my students is that they have pain around the joints. The technique of creating more space in affected joints is one that I have found helpful for this problem both personally and for my students. For example, when my knees are feeling cranky and sore, I will actively lift my thighbones away from my shinbones in standing poses to create more space between the boney surfaces of the knee joints. For me, this results in more muscular engagement around the joints and usually lessens any pain that was there before. I apply this way of working to just about any movable joint in the body when any of these joints are troubling for my students or me.
What has shifted recently is the idea of sequentially involving as many joints as I can in a pose. For example, in Mountain pose, I start by feeling grounded evenly in the feet, then lift the shins away from the feet, the thighs away from the shins, the pelvis away from the thighs, and the individual spinal bones up off one another, all the way up to lifting the skull away from the cervical spine. When used in the static version of poses, this technique establishes a clear lift away from gravity, engages the muscles around many joints, and feels very strengthening and quite good on the joints. It is also a great way to focus the mind on remaining in the body for longer holds. As I have been getting familiar with this expanded way of making space in joints in many poses, I have started to share it with my classes lately with good feedback from my students. I hope to share more specifics via my YouTube videos in the coming months. Stay tuned by subscribing to my YouTube channel.
Slow Motion/Outer Space Yoga  Here at YFHA, we have often discussed how to use yoga poses to build strength, via different ways of contracting muscles (see Strength Building: How Long to Hold Poses). But recently I’ve learned about some new research that gave me some new ideas. In addition to reading blogs about yoga-related research and practice, I also follow the blog The S&C Research Reviewof Chris Beardsley, a British athletic trainer and writer, who focuses on evaluating the research on weight training and strength building. He recently pointed out that multiple studies are showing that eccentric muscle contraction is as or more effective in building strong muscles as static holds and concentric muscle contractions.  For those of you who are not familiar with the term, eccentric contraction (which I discussed in my post Strength Building: How Long to Hold Poses is when a muscle is still contracting while slowly lengthening. What?? You might be saying to yourself, “That does not seem to make any sense!” Let me give you an example of how it works: as you slowly lift your arms out to the sides and up from Mountain pose up into Arms Overhead pose, the muscle at the tops of the shoulders, the deltoids, are contracting and shortening on the way up (this is known as concentric contraction). However, if you slowly lower the arms back down, that same muscle is continuing to contract, but it is lengthening, to allow for a smooth even descent of your arms.  This is eccentric contraction. Several of the studies on resistance weight training to build muscle used eccentric muscle contractions of 3-4 seconds (for instance, taking 3-4 seconds to lower the arms to the sides as described above). If you want to read more on this topic, see here. In those studies, subjects are using weights of some sort. In yoga asanas, we use our own body weight instead, but that’s still “lifting weights”. So, with all that in mind, I have been taking dynamic versions of poses and my mini-vinyasas and slowing the time in and out of poses (4 to 6 seconds for each specific movement) while keeping the breath relaxed. That might mean you take two full breaths to make the move instead of just one inhalation or exhalation. When you practice this way, it looks like you are moving in slow motion and even has that look of weightless movement you see with astronauts on space shuttle missions, ergo the name. But it feels like you are working in a very different, stronger way than when moving in and out of a pose on just the inhalation or exhalation. The slower movement also requires more concentrated focus, which I consider an added benefit. I’d love to see a future yoga study on strength improvements comparing dynamic poses (moving in on and inhalation and out on an exhalation) with static poses and this slow-motion version to see which is more effective in building strength. It is also my intention to create some videos on this style of practice to share with you in the near future. Stay tuned by subscribing to my YouTube channel. I received the following comment on my post from yesterday Speaking Truth to Power About Sexual Abuse that concerned me: “Please, can you stay away from this deluge of articles related to sex and sexual abuse. It has nothing to do with healthy aging. Westerners are fascinated by sex and sexual culture and YFHA is proving this true with so many…
