It is so named because of its yellow-tinted sides and fins, though during breeding season, males will develop a strong red tint to their pectoral, pelvic and anal fins!

The yellow perch and European perch are so morphologically similar that they are sometimes considered the same species, or that the yellow perch is a subspecies of the European perch! Currently they're thought of as different species though, as the line between different species is... often blurred.
