Diamondsona!!!!

Yes, I’m still mostly a cosplay blog. You will see occasional ocs here too.

Red diamond and the basic members of her court, Red Pearl and Red Spinel. She was created to replace Pink Diamond during era 2. This is a concept I originally was going to use for my old black diamond oc, but because of the black diamond memes I’m making her Red. I have draft designs of more court members coming later.

She is red because she is actually an off color Pink. They didn’t have enough pink essence left to create a new pink, so she has dark impurities. She isn’t like pink, however. She is much more serious and authoritarian. She technically has two spinels as OG Spinel was retrieved from the garden in this AU. Spinel wasn’t retrieved until after Red Spinel was created, however. She is easily angered, but tries her best to control it for the sake of impressing her fellow diamonds. Instead she takes it out on unruly subjects. She requires lots of structure in her court, which her subjects think is because she’s mean. In reality she has issues she denies even to herself, and is taking it out on them. She knows she isn’t Pink. She knows that the diamonds know she isn’t Pink. She knows they try not to act like it, but that they miss Pink. Yellow acts like now that they have Red it’s over and we don’t need Pink anymore. She uses Red as a tool to help her not think about it. White acts like Red is an improvement upon Pink, despite her impurities because she behaves better. White was skeptical of making another Pink before Red was created, though. Blue thought Red would help her move on but she didn’t so she and Red don’t get along. Red just reminds Blue that Pink is truly gone because of how different they are. Red also struggles to keep her anger in check and commands her subjects so strictly because she doesn’t want them to rebel like she believes they did with Pink. She thinks she has heard what happens when diamonds are too lenient. They become failures.

Her spinel uses mostly they/them pronouns btw.

Shaina was on my cosplay 'wish list' for years... but was pretty far down in priority until October 2021: when I started thinking about potential masked cosplays for my first foray back into con-going. I went through my supply stash and found I already had everything except the wig, neon tights, and shoes to make her- so, it was decided. I paused working on my other two WIPs to have her done by January (since I had rollover tickets for ALA 2022). While she was 'complete' enough to wear for the event, there's still some work to be done on the chest plate... and her snake gauntlet broke by days end so needs fixing. Otherwise, I'm pretty proud of how she turned out!

Before I move on to costume specs, I just want to clarify that I did wear a medical-grade mask under my costume one. We aren't out of the woods yet, so con responsibly!

Materials/Construction:

Belt- Yellow flannel, from my fabric stash

Bodysuit- Brown jersey knit, from my fabric stash (pattern drafted by me)

Chest Plate Armor- EVA Foam (6mm, with 2mm used for detailing), Plasti-Dip to seal foam for painting, silver and metallic violet paint (mixed), and Velcro for side fastenings (pattern drafted by me)

Headpiece- Foam clay sculpted over a store-bought headband, Mod Podge to seal foam for painting, silver and metallic violet paint (mixed), and EVA foam (2mm) for diamond-shaped pieces over the ears

Knee Pads- EVA foam (6mm), Plasti-Dip to seal foam for painting, silver and metallic violet paint (mixed), silver stretch vinyl

Leg Warmers- Lavender violet fleece, elastic (pattern drafted by me)

Mask- Plain plastic craft store mask from my closet (shape refined a bit with scissors and heat), navy blue and black paint, plastic mesh (for eyes), elastic (dyed to match wig)

Right Gauntlet- Lavender violet fleece (sewn from a modified Vogue 8311 pattern), EVA foam (2mm) for details, Mod Podge to seal foam for painting, metallic violet paint

Snake (Left) Gauntlet- silver stretch vinyl for glove (sewn from a modified Vogue 8311 pattern), foam clay sculpted over a base shape of scrunched newspaper, EVA foam (2mm) for arm straps, Mod Podge to seal foam for painting, silver and metallic violet paint (mixed)

Shoes- Store-bought heels, yellow Angelus leather/vinyl paint

Tights- Store-bought

The wig is a Hestia from EpicCosplay in Tea Green, with minimal styling by me. The false nails were painted with a mixture of black and purple nail polishes.

Man someone on youtube has to have done one of those therapist deep-dives on their relationship. So much of their interactions are just painfully accurate for the way a kid reacts to an abusive parent--that combination of fear and resentment and still wishing you could make them happy, just once.

My family didn't have a golden child vs. scapegoat thing going on, though. I wonder if this is based on the writers' own experiences or if one of them read about that dynamic or had a therapist consulted or what

There's some parallels here with kids who grew up in conservative/evangelical families realizing their family's politics and faith weren't based around Jesus at all but were based around bigotry and small-minded cruelty and knowing they have to leave, and knowing ND Stevenson's background I assume it's intentional

:( and to Catra, this just feels like a betrayal. There's a meta post somewhere way back in my tags that was like, from Catra's POV, Adora knew how shitty Shadow Weaver treated Catra and that wasn't enough to rebel and leave, but knowing Glimmer and Bow for a handful of hours was, and how much that had to hurt like hell, considering Catra put up with Shadow Weaver's abuse for so long in part to protect Adora and in part because it meant her and Adora were still together

Ugh this is why I love this show, Catra's actions are sometimes just awful but they make sense given what we know about her life, and right now she's just panicking and trying to hide it

And meanwhile Bow and Glimmer are like "actually we've decided we trust you :) can you be fancy sword lady again thanks!"

Like of course Adora is going to pick Bow and Glimmer and not Catra in that moment!!

But Hordak didn't promote Catra because he personally believes in her abilities, he did it to piss off Shadow Weaver. Then again maybe he knows that promoting Catra means she'll stay loyal.

Because it works, doesn't it. Oof. Catra wants to prove herself, dammit; and she's been given a shot at doing it, so she's staying.

Tag 10 People You Want to Get to Know Better

Relationship status: Extremely divorced. Prowl levels of divorced. Four times! Multiple genders! Still hopeful though!  I would like to be in a relationship but probably nobody who is not a quadruped should live in the same house with me; while the other parties involved definitely had contributing issues and one was an honest-to-G-d abuser, I’m the only one who’s done it 4 times.

Favourite colour: This varies; it’s usually pink, but can also be purple and various shades of light blue, teal or peach.  There are shades of yellow and yellowish green that are deeply, almost physically unpleasant and painful for me to look at. I’m very autistic that way.

I always get the highest scores possible on those colour sensitivity tests, and was almost broken as a kid by my mother telling me I had to match colours because to my eyes almost nothing matched so I just wore whatever I personally thought looked good.  Turns out everyone other than my mother thought so too. I was really good at “matching blacks” during my goth stage.

Something I want right now: universal basic income and to quit my job so I can write and dance and learn how to draw again. Song stuck in my head: Oh No!  by Marina and the Diamonds (it’s one of my Starscream songs)

Three favourite foods: My three easiest to obtain favourites are: 1. Rib eye steak, particularly the outer part, rare but not cold. 2. Salmon and asparagus with brown rice farina and cheese. 3. Haagen-Dazs butter pecan ice cream. I’m autistic.  Other brands are close, but for me close but not quite as good is “nasty” not “acceptable”‘ -- if the brand isn’t available, I’ll get some other gluten free flavour.  Too close is deeply disappointing. Something that doesn’t sound awful can only be mildly disappointing and might be good.

Last song I listened to: “You Better You Bet” by the Who.  I always imagine Grimlock singing this to Howlback.

“I don’t really mind how much you love me--oooh, a little is all right When you say, come over and spend the night, tonight!”

(He is demiro, she is aro. She loves him to pieces, but despite the fact that they are so hot for each other they fuck rather than hug hello, she has never been In Love in her life and is grateful for that because she thinks being In Love makes people of every species act crazy AF.)

Last thing I googled: 1960s brutalist jewellery. That’s what @legendtrainer, who tagged me, googled last, and I, who have only ever heard “brutialist” applied to architecture, wondered what the fuck that was. It turns out that I own a fuck ton of it, though it’s all from the 70s and early 80s. I bought it when I wanted to cosplay my Star Trek: TOS OCs.  I thought it would look like Klingon or Vulcan stuff. I wonder if the ones I haven’t taken apart and strung together with other things are worth anything.

Dream trip: I want to go back to Japan with more time and a lot more money.

Aside from that, though, in terms of practical dreams:  I was supposed to go to TF-Con LA but my brother got cancer and I bought him some of his meds while waiting for his coverage to kick in because, you know, I don’t want him to die. And his special food that insurances just don’t cover.

Don’t live in America.  We’re a beautiful country but we’re a cruel one.

AvA Sticktober 2022 - Day 21: Outfit

Different outfits for the Stick Gang.

The Second Coming and Green:

The Second Coming is dressed up in an adventurer's outfit with his Minecraft diamond sword. Well... I intended it to be a horse rider's outfit, but with the colors I gave for each article of clothing... yeah, doesn't look like that anymore...

And I gave him a cape because why not?

Green is dressed up in a race car driver's jumpsuit, because I remembered the anon question from a few months about which stick figures know how to drive in my personal opinion, and I imagined him being a race car driver with the speed I think he would be going at.

(I actually have another inspiration for the outfits that applies to both him and Second, but if I explain it, it wouldn't make any sense, so yeah.)

Yellow:

Teacher Yellow is back with another lesson on redstone, so you better pay attention.

Blue and Red:

It's Blue's turn to cosplay as a magical girl. The outfit is from one of Toei Animation's 70s Magical Girl Series, Hana no Ko Lunlun, or Lunlun, the Flower Girl. The theme for this anime is flowers, and learning the meanings and lessons associated with them. One of Blue's favorite hobbies is gardening, so I thought this would fit him.

Speaking of magic, Red's here to perform some magic for you! Actual magic, not redstone magic, I promise.

I was listening to a song performed in another one of Studio Pierrot's 80s Magical Girl Series - Mahou no Star Magical Emi, or Magical Emi, the Magic Star (yeah, I love Magical Girl Series) - and seeing how the theme focuses on magicians and magic tricks, I remembered the time where Red was performing some "magic" for Green and Blue, assisted by Yellow, who created his magic by using command blocks (Animation vs. Minecraft - Episode 6: Command Blocks).

One final note: I was only going to do Second and Red initially, but one idea led to another, and this was the result.

i’m considering bringing a sword for my zam cosplay but if i do im not sure which. the left is a normal diamond sword and while the right is a sword from terraria, its color is similar to netherite

my zam cosplay only has yellow/gold, white, and black in it so i’m not sure how much it’d match atm but i’d like to hear what u guys think bc i’m very much indecisive

Yet another Azeyma-inspired glam. Dancer LB3 animation seemed appropriate with the lotus effect.

For more phoenix feather details, try Peacock Hat - ruby red. For white fur-trimmed gauntlets that look closer to Azeyma’s in-game model, try Dai-ryumyaku Kote of Aiming - metallic gold or Ala Mhigan Fingerless Gloves of Aiming - metallic brass. Neither will have quite the same metallic gold tone as the Panthean plate armor though.

I've seen Leisha use the sagittarius headpiece as a hair extension, and it seemed very fitting in this case.

Dearest Gentle Reader,

I apologize in the belatedness of this Munday post, but as requested, here is my contribution for the week beneath the cut:

aka. it’s cosplay time with Rae, Bridgerton edition!

In short, I’ve been sitting on several Bridgerton costumes over the past two years with no place to wear them until now. The Bridgerton Experience has arrived in my city and I’m going this weekend!

For those unfamiliar, The Queen’s Ball: A Bridgerton Experience is an event put on by Netflix which is part photo-op, part-dance, and part-stage show. Attendees are encouraged to dress in formalwear (especially Regency-style formalwear!), take photos, be presented to Queen Charlotte, and try to be named the Diamond of the First Water. There is also a Stranger Things experience but it’s not in as many cities right now. I hope it comes to mine, too!

Naturally, I will likely not be named the season’s Diamond: I’m going as one of my two (very much talked about) favorite characters from the series, Penelope Featherington, in all of her glaring yellow glory! Francesca Bridgerton is my other fave, and I’m waiting for Season 3 (and the extra screentime she’ll get due to being recast) to pick out a Francesca gown or two. These gowns are a bit less expensive than the usual historical or fantasy gown reproductions I’ve done in the past due to less fabric (Disney princesses? both of my Sonia gowns? Expensive. And heavy!). 

In any case, a lot of my week is being used to get ready for the event over the weekend. I need to steam my dress and add several hundred clear rhinestones over the next three nights, but I tried on my gown, stays (aka. the Regency corset. They come in short and long forms, depending on your figure. Like Penelope, I have a fuller figure, so the longer stays are best for me!), and chemise and it fits well.

I also had to do an emergency wig style. I commissioned a wig for Penelope but it’s not going to arrive in time, so I had to make do with a base ringlet curl wig and throw it into a sort of updo, as seen here:

Technically, Penelope has a giant sausage curl on the side in this look and several curly tendrils, but this particular wig doesn’t take to heat well, and I’m hoping I’ll only have to wear it once before my commissioned one arrives!

So otherwise, if I’m not working, working on replies here, or playing otome games, I’ll be adding a lot of tiny rhinestones over the next few days for even more bling. My shoulders and back will not be happy but it’ll look a bit more screen-accurate.

Platinum: "You know..." He tapped his chin in thought. "You cover your hand for a very specific reason, right?" Platinum lowers his hand, and locks his arms behind himself. "Would you, per chance, tell me why?"

As the rest of the team got on their salamence chauffeur, Llndea stood before the human, rubbing his arm nervously.

Llndea: "Well...the spike on my hand brought me some...unwarranted attention, so I cover it with this glove and never take it off unless I'm home with the others. I wish I could get rid of it; it caused me nothing but pain." ??: "Why get rid of something part of you?"

This came from a man in a turquoise suit with yellow flaps on the shoulders, black pants, and shoes. He also wore a hat with what looked like horns coming out of it; despite his outfit, the thing that stood out the most was the sword resting in a sheath on his hip. Accompanied by him were three other oddly dressed people. Two of them were twins, each wearing a kimono, one of them a male with blue hair and a blue kimono with white stripes, and the other was a female with red hair and a red kimono with white striped. They both seemed to have a diamond-shaped mark on their foreheads; the male was red, and the female was blue. Last in the group was a younger boy, like the man, he wore a suit, this time a beige-colored one with blue pants. He also had a sword on his hip, sporting a single horn.

??: "Yeah, aren't you suppose to have spikes on your hand or something?"

The girl inquired, tilting her head.

??: "Well, duh. He's lucario-kin; lucarios have spikes on their hands."

The male responded, rolling his eyes.

??: "Shuddap! I know that!"

The girl retorted, scowling back at him.

??: "Make me!"

The male replied with a smile

??: "Wait a minute, guys..isn't that one of the trio?"

The boy chimed in quietly, subtly gesturing to the person next to Llndea. The girl looked closely at them, then shook her head

??: Nah. They have a similar aura to them, though. It might be one of those alternate timeline thingies.

Llndea: Ok Ok back up. Who are you? What the heck is "lucario-kin"? And why are you all wearing cosplay?

The four newcomers gasp in unison, their eyes wide as they look at the confused male.

??: You....don't know?

The boy in the suit replied slowly. Llndea: Uhhh... Know what?

The older man sighs, shaking his head

??: It seems we have a lot to talk about.
