"Lifehacking" is in pretty bad odor these days, and with good reason: a once-useful catch-all for describing how to make things easier has become a pit of productivity porn, grifter hustling, and anodyne advice wreathed in superlatives and transformed into SEO-compliant listicles.
But I was there when lifehacking was born, and I'm here to tell you, it wasn't always thus. Lifehacking attained liftoff exactly 19 years and 348 days ago, on Feb 11, 2004, when Danny O'Brien presented "Life Hacks: Tech Secrets of Overprolific Alpha Geeks" at the 0'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference (aka ETCON). I was there, and I took notes:

O'Brien's inspiration was his social circle, in which people he knew to be no smarter or better or motivated than anyone else in that group were somehow able to do much more than their peers, in some specific domain. O'Brien delved deeply into these peoples' lives and discovered that each of them had merely ("merely!") gotten very good at using one or two tools to automate things that would otherwise take up a lot of their time.
These "hacks" freed up their practitioners to focus on things that mattered more to them. They accomplished the goal set out in David Allen's Getting Things Done: to make a conscious choice about which things you are going to fail to do today, rather than defaulting to doing the things that are easy and trivial, at the expense of the things that matter, but are more complicated:

One trait all those lifehacks shared: everyone who created a little hack was faintly embarrassed by it, and assumed that others who learned about their tricks would find them trivial or foolish. O'Brien changed the world by showing that other people were, in fact, delighted and excited to learn about their peers' cool little tricks.
(Unfortunately, this eventually opened the floodgates of overheated posts about some miraculous hack that turned out to indeed be silly and trivial or even actively bad, but that wasn't O'Brien's fault!)
I'm one of those people whom others perceive as very "productive." There are some objective metrics on which this is true: I wrote nine books during lockdown, for example. Like the lifehackers O'Brien documented in 2004, I have lots of little hacks that aren't merely a way of getting more done – they're a way to make sure that I get the stuff that matters to me (taking care of my family and my health, and writing books) done.
A lot of these lifehacks boil down to making your life easier. There's a spot on our kitchen counter where I put e-waste. Whenever I go out to the car, I carry any e-waste out and put it in a bag in the trunk. Any time I'm near our city dump, I stop and throw the bag into their e-waste bin. This is now a habit, and habits are things you get for free: I spend zero time thinking about e-waste, which means I have more time to think about things that matter (and our e-waste still ends up in the right place).

For longer-form works like novels, I "leave myself a rough edge," finishing the day's work in the middle of a sentence. That way I get a few words for free the next day, meaning I never start the day's work wondering which words I'll type:

One of the most powerful habits I've cultivated is to have a group of daily tabs that I open in a new browser every morning. The meat of this tab group is websites I want to check in with every day, either because they don't have RSS feeds, or because I want to make sure I never miss an update.
This tab-group habit started before RSS was widespread, when most of the websites I wanted to check in on every day didn't have feeds yet, and for many years, this group was just a set of daily reads. But over the years, I started throwing things in the tab-group that I needed to stay on top of.
My daily tabs are in a folder called "unfucked rota" (they were originally in a folder called "rota," which got corrupted and had to be reconstructed in a folder I called "fucked rota," until I finally took a couple hours off and got it in good running order, hence "unfucked rota"). As I type this, "unfucked rota" contains more than a hundred websites I visit every morning, but it also contains:
The edit-history pages for four Wikipedia entries I'm watching;
Chronological feeds of my books on Amazon and Audible, to catch counterfeits as they are posted;
The parent notification portal for my kid's school;
The mileage history for the airline I flew on yesterday (I'll delete this once the flight is posted);
The credit card history for a card I reported a fraudulent charge on (I'll delete this once the refund is posted);
The sell-pages for three products that are out of stock (I'll delete these once the products are in stock and ordered);
A bookmarked newest-first Ebay search for a shirt I like that has been discontinued by the manufacturer;
The new-survey-completed pages for my last two Kickstarters;
The courier tracking page for an item being shipped sea-freight to me from Asia.
The tail end of this unfucked rota changes all the time, but as you can tell, it's got a lot of stuff that would be time-consuming to build a whole new system to track, but which has a web-page that can be easily added to a daily, habitual check-in and then removed when it's not relevant anymore.
Some of these things have email notifiers or RSS feeds, but those are too easy to lose in the noise. I generally delete email from ecommerce sites unread, since 99.99% of the messages they send me are unsolicited marketing nonsense, not the "notify me when this is back in stock" message I do want to see (same goes for my kid's school, which sends me fifty unimportant messages for every message that I must reply to).
Most of the internet is still on the web, which means it can be bookmarked, which means that it takes me one second to add it to the group of things I'm staying on top of, and one second to remove from that group. I get up in the morning, middle-click the "unfucked rota" item in my bookmarks pane, make a cup of coffee, and then sit down and race through those tabs, close-close-close.
It takes less than a second to scan a tab to see if it's changed (and if I close a tab too quickly, the ctrl-shift-T "unclose" shortcut is there in muscle-memory, another habit). The whole process takes between one and 15 minutes (depending on whether there's anything useful and new in one of those tabs).
Tabs, like lifehacks, are also in bad odor. Everyone stresses about how many tabs they have open. It's even inspired Rusty Foster's excellent newsletter, Today In Tabs:

But this is a very different way to think about tabs. Rather than opening a window full of tabs that need your detailed, once-off attention later, this method is about using groups of tabs so that you can pay cursory, frequent attention to them.
In a world full of administrative burdens, where firms and institutions play the "sure, we'll do that, but you're going to have to track our progress" game to get out of living up to their obligations, this method is a powerful countermeasure:

My little tab habit is so incredibly useful, such a powerful way to seize back time and power from powerful actors who impose burdens on me, that I sometimes forget how, for other people, tabs are a symptom of a life that's spiraling out of control. For me, a couple hundred tabs are a symbol of a couple hundred tasks that I'm totally on top of, a symbol of control wrestled back from others who are hostile to my interests.
This isn't how tabs were "meant" to be used, of course. It's an example of the kind of "innovation" that comes from users repurposing things in ways their designers didn't necessarily anticipate or intend.
This is what Jonathan Zittrain meant by "generative" technology back in 2008, when he published his incredibly prescient The Future of the Internet: And How To Stop It:

For Zittrain, "generativity" was the property of some technologies that let its users generate new, useful tools and solutions for themselves (this is very different from "generative AI!")
Zittrain described how "curated" computing systems, like mobile devices that relied on apps that couldn't be adapted by their users, were dead ends for generativity. 15 years later, the dismal world of apps has proven him right:

To the extent that "lifehacking" is about doing more, rather than being more deliberate about what you accomplish, it can be harmful. I am not immune to the failure modes of lifehacking:

But overall, using tabs as something I close, rather than something I open, is a source of comfort and calm for me. For one thing, ripping through a group of tabs every morning means that I don't have to worry about missing something if I go too fast. I'll get another chance tomorrow:

For me, this habit of decades is so ingrained that it feels trivial and obvious. And yet, when I look at people in my life struggling to stay on top of a million nagging administrative tasks that could be easily watched through a morning's flick through a tab-group, I can't help but think that maybe some of you will find a useful idea or two in my unfucked rota.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This Design and Access Statement accompanies a Planning Applica- tion for a new Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery at Midhope Castle which lies within the Hopetoun Estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh. It is intended this is the first of a series of applications containing proposals to regenerate the Castle, the surrounding listed buildings and landscape setting.
The overall project aims to create an environment to produce, share and market an exceptional whisky. Its success depends not just on the production of whisky but on the ability to invite guests to see the creative process, appreciate its origins and have the time to experi- ence the whisky and the environment. It is intended in the future that the castle will be the venue for a significant part of these activities.

LOCATION
The site is approximately 11.5 miles West of the City of Edinburgh, 5 miles to the North West of Edinburgh airport, 3.5 miles to the West of the South Queensferry, and a little under half a mile South of the Firth of Forth. It has an overall area of 6.9 hectares within the beautifully managed Hopetoun Estate. Hopetoun House is approximately 1 mile East of the site.

SITE
The site is located within Hopetoun Estate but outside the area of the Designated Designed Landscape that surrounds Hopetoun House and Abercorn to the east. The site for the new distillery is located to the immediate west of Midhope Castle.
The Castle is reached via an access road runs for approximately a quarter of a mile, west from the road link between the hamlet of Ab- ercorn and the A904.
The site to the east of the Midhope Burn is largely dense woodland. A Fireworks manufacturing business is currently located in a large clearing near the entrance to the site. This clearing was formerly the location of a Saw Mill.
The access road arrives at a small car park. There is a path that leads to the outer wall of the Castle courtyard.

Midhope Castle is to the north-east of the site with a courtyard and a modest walled garden to the immediate South. Behind the castle, just to the north, is a small derelict Victorian, ancillary building.
In the space to the east of the castle toward the approach road there are two Victorian cottages and a doocot.
The site for the distillery building is to the south-west of the cas- tle and in an area that is currently occupied by a number of modern agricultural sheds and some hard-standing left from recent utilitarian ancillary structures. The area is functional and has no obvious sig- nificant historic structures. It currently houses the grounds for a tree climbing and chainsaw training company which is in the process of relocating.

HERITAGE CONTEXT
The original Midhope Castle (recorded as “Medhope Castle”) was built in the late 15th century. In 1587 this castle was partially rebuilt.
The castle was extended in 1664 and reached the general arrange- ment and form that can be seen today. Further extensions and altera- tions took place in 1678.
By the early 20th century the castle was in a state of disrepair and the interior timber staircase recorded as being in poor condition.
In 1988 a programme of consolidation and partial restoration was undertaken. A new roof was formed on the West Tower and steelwork was inserted within the shell of the castle to stabilse the structure. New window frames were inserted into the existing openings. This work seems to have arrested any further significant deterioration.
Today the building is in a ruinous state internally, and most of the in- ternal features have been lost, but is generally wind and water tight.
Midhope Castle was designated as a Scheduled Monument in 1950 and was given a Category A listing in 1971 . In 2018 the Scheduled Monument status was removed and the designation was simplified to the current Category A listing.

The Roy Lowlands map of 1754 shows the castle within the wider context of the Hopetoun House Estate. To the north of the castle are a series of geometrically arranged copses either side of an axis that relates to Hopetoun House to the west. Today some of these trees are still visible.
The landscape around Midhope Castle is also visible on this plan - the series of walls that form the courtyard at the castle, and the larger open area to the west.

The 6 inch map of 1854 more shows Midhope Castle in the form that it can be seen today. The approach path from the east, the Doocot, the gamekeeper’s cottage and the walled garden to the south of the castle are visible.
This plan also shows the state of the landscape to the west of the castle. A path or track extended out from the courtyard into the land- scape and a series of gardens were enclosed to the north.
The south edge of the site was defined by a row of trees that aligned with the walled garden.
The remaining traces of these landscape structures have informed the location of the new distillery building and the landscape strategy.

MASTERPLAN APPROACH
The current application is the first in a series of planned phased pro- posals for the site that will initially improve the setting, and stabilise the fabric, of the castle, and later seek to reuse and regenerate the castle.
The construction of the distillery and the production of the whisky need to be the first steps in order to establish the business and generate income in order to progress to the next phases of the wider project.
In the medium term there are also plans to open parts of the castle to facilitate some of visitors who currently visit the site due to the castle’s association with the “Outlander” television series.
There is the ultimate aim to use the castle for visitor functions that are complimentary to the new distillery – tasting spaces, dining, and potentially overnight accommodation.
All of these future works will carefully balance the repair and refur- bishment of the existing historical fabric of the castle and surround- ing landscape features. Further refinement of the timing and content of these next phases will reviewed as the project develops.

VISION
Initial works
The current Planning Application is for the new distillery building together with the immediate landscaping, a new access road and the change of use of Midhope Castle to visitor accommodation.
An application for Listed Building Consent will follow. This will include the repair and refurbishment works to the landscape features around the castle- the reinstatement of the damaged stone piers, the re- gaining of the walled garden and cobbled castle forecourt and the potential removal of derelict outbuildings. It has not been possible to gain access to the site to carry out these surveys due to restrictions imposed by the Covid 19 crisis.
Next steps
Future Planning Applications and Listed Building Applications are planned as the business becomes established. These include plans for a Maltings Building at the former Sawmill site, work to the castle and extensions as appropriate, repurposing of the Dovecot, and other facilities in the grounds of the castle and distillery.

SCOPE OF INITIAL PHASE
It is possible to conceptually divide the site into two areas, they can broadly be described as modern farm building land and the castle grounds. It is not intended that the physical distinction between the areas be over emphasised in the finished design but it is a useful tool in describing the approaches to the specific areas. The distillery is proposed to be on the farm building land, with the main road and the access road coming across the castle grounds.
The farm building land does not have any obvious structures of histor- ic significance, whilst the castle grounds are rich with elements that are historically significant and referred to in the category A listing of the castle and the Category B listing of the Doocot.
The historic influence on the farm building land is most strongly ap- parent in its relationship to the castle grounds. The land spreads in a relatively level expanse from the castle and forms the base of an approximate bowl. This reinforces the sense that the area that will house the distillery, despite being the larger area, is attendant on the castle as the most substantial historic structure on the site.
Very little work is proposed to the immediate castle grounds in this application. The client wishes to take the time to carefully consider the appropriate design and relationship with the existing buildings. The intention is to intervene in this area as little as possible at this point and only to the extent that is required to access the distillery site without negatively affecting the significant historic fabric.
The castle grounds are subject to ongoing analysis and will be the focus of future applications in subsequent phases.

DESIGN PROPOSALS
The distillery is seens as the first phase of a sequence of develop- ments on the wider site aimed at enriching the landscape and improv- ing the setting and fabric of Midhope Castle.
The aspiration is to create a unique place where the production of Whisky, the landscape it draws from and the heritage of the site can be enjoyed. The setting and location is key to the proposal.
The new distillery building will have two main functions. It will pro- duce over 500,000 litres of whisky a year from Barley grown on the Estate. It will also offer visitors the opportunity to see all aspects of the Whisky production process and to enjoy the unique historical set- ting and landscape.
The setting of the distillery is one that has many layers of history. It will be close to Midhope Castle, which is known to date from the fif- teenth century and along with the land around has been altered many times over the subsequent years. The castle was occupied until the 1920s and each periodw has resulted in change. The additions to the castle are clear to see, and there are buildings around the castle that date from the 1800s. The setting shows a timeline of agricultural use and castle shows evidence of the varied occupation that ranges from aristocracy to the workers on the land.
The castle is the embodiment of the historic significance of the site, and this position is to be carefully maintained. The orientation of the new design is lead by the influence of the existing fabric. It’s form will have a larger footprint but a lower height, it will not compete with the castle but rather work alongside it, and by looking toward the castle’s raised entrance create an exciting new dynamic.

SETTING & ACCESS
The approach to the site will be along the existing track which winds through dense woodland to a clearing that is currently used as a car park for visitors to the castle.
From here a new access route is proposed to take service traffic for the distillery to the south, away from the castle and existing cottages.
The existing footpath leads up to the castle courtyard past the listed dovecot building and existing Victorian cottage and outbuildings to the north.
The courtyard sits between the castle and the overgrown walled gar- den to the south. To the west of this enclosed outdoor space is the open area currently given over to light industrial and agricultural use. This largely flat area of land sits within a shallow depression relative to the surrounding wider agricultural landscape. This will be the site of the new distillery.
The distillery begins to be visible on moving through the courtyard. The new building will align with the traces of an route that once ran through this area out to the west.

SETTING & RESPONSE
The new building consists of three, simple shed-like forms.
The largest is a long, pitched roof building that edges the south of the site. This building will contain most of the distillery production areas and spaces for visitors – a display area containing whisky ma- turing in barrels, tasting spaces, and multi-purpose areas that can be used for exhibitions and functions.
To the north is a second smaller pitched roof form that contains the stills and shelters the worm tubs.
To the south a third pitched roof form encloses external tanks and barrel storage.
A service yard is located to the south of the distillery and sits be- tween the new building and the existing embankment. The service yard and the more industrial activity is hidden from view from the surrounding landscape and most importantly is invisible from the ap- proach road and castle. Access to the service yard will be provided by a new road formed to the south of the main site.
The public areas of the distillery will offer views back to the castle and the landscape to the north. The landscape around the distillery will reinstate paths and routes that we once on the site.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
The basic form of the new building has been influenced by common simple, robust utilitarian agricultural buildings. From a distance the distillery will appear as a grouping of simple, quiet forms in the land- scape.
The still house will be wrapped in timber giving it an abstract quality. This building will contain the stills and their copper forms will be vis- ible through the glazed gable facing the castle courtyard.
The still house sits in a cooling pond and forms a gathering place at the visitor entrance to the distillery. This entrance aligns with both the reinstated road and wall running east to west but also with the existing track that leaves the site to the north.
A large framed window on the first floor of the distillery offers pano- ramic views back to the castle, across the structured landscape close to the distillery and further to the agriculutral fields of the estate beyond. These large windows will be edged in bronze metal cladding,
The maturation display area at the east end of the building will be clad in stained or charred slatted timber that will allow in direct light into the space. On dark evenings this end of the building will glow and act as a lantern drawing visitors across the landscape from the castle.

As painter, sculptor, designer and architect Max Bill represented the ideal image of a modern artist as propagated by the avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s. Briefly trained at the Dessau Bauhaus in 1927/28 Bill nonetheless fundamentally embraced its teachings and after WWII revived them at the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) in Ulm. In 1932 he designed a pioneering house and studio for himself in Zurich and consecutively established himself as a jack of all trades. But while architectural commissions remained scarce Bill succeeded in another field, namely exhibition design: the Swiss pavilions at the International Exhibitions in Paris (1937) and New York (1939), the contribution to the 6th Triennial in Milan or the „Die Gute Form“ exhibition in 1949 are just a few examples of his wide-ranging activities in the field. They were characterized by a great deal of transparency, a clear construction and the ability to form a coherent whole of a pluralistic assignment.
That he was also capable of using his experience on a sturdy building demonstrates his magnum opus, the HfG school building in Ulm, Germany: realized between 1950 and 1955 it is a complex, campus-like structure embedded in the hills above Ulm that accommodates lecture rooms, workshops and dormitories in a coherent ensemble. In the years following his departure from the HfG Bill continued to design numerous buildings of which a selection is included in the present monographic issue of 2G Magazine published in 2004 and edited by Karin Gimmi: it covers some 26 buildings and structures by Max Bill as well as excellent introductory texts by Stanislaus von Moos, Hans Frei, Karin Gimmi and Arthur Rüegg who address Bill’s spatial thinking, his exhibition designs and the concrete structural frameworks he designed. In combination with the excellent archival and plan material as well as the excellent photographs, historic and current, this issue of 2G is an excellent source to Max Bill’s architecture, although it can hardly be viewed without his other works.

Capt. Doug Zembiec, the commanding officer of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, gives orders to his men over a radio prior to leaving their secured compound for a short patrol in the city of Fallujah on April 8, 2004.
He was nicknamed the "Lion of Fallujah" as a result of his heroic actions commanding Echo Company during Operation Vigilant Resolve in 2004. As a rifle company commander, Zembiec led 168 Marines and Navy Corpsmen in the first conventional ground assault into Fallujah. He earned the Silver Star and the Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device and also received two Purple Hearts due to wounds incurred in action.
Years later, Zembiec was serving in the Ground Branch of the CIA's Special Activities Division in Iraq when he was killed by small arms fire while leading a raid in Baghdad on May 11, 2007. Zembiec was leading a unit of Iraqi forces he had helped train. Reports from fellow servicemen that were present when he was killed indicate that he had warned his troops to get down before doing so himself and was hit by enemy fire. The initial radio report indicated "five wounded and one martyred" with Zembiec having been killed and his men saved by his warning.

The Grim Dark Archives: Statement #001 Wolves in Sheep's Clothing
[Statement taken from [Redacted] on the 12th of August 2004, one year after the Autobots have made their presence known and begun corresponding with human military personnel. [Redacted] has taken up residence within a secure location at [Redacted: Classified data] until further notice in order to keep them from potentially being discovered by Autobot networks.
Since being moved to their new quarters [Redacted] has proven to be far more willing to converse, at least in a sensible manner. Prior to being given a safe haven they were incredibly tightlipped about what they said and almost never did anything aside from hide away in the far corner of the facility. [Redacted]'s terror of being found out by the Autobots was debilitating at best and downright detrimental to their health at worst.
It was pricey moving [Redacted] to a whole new location with enough energon to sustain them all while keeping it away from Autobot ears, or rather audio systems. However it has proven to be of use, especially with [Redacted]'s newest statement. [Redacted] was asked to clarify just how the Autobots blend in to appear as though akin to humanity in mentality.
[Redacted]'s answer… it worries me greatly. I was always fond of the idea of meeting extraterrestrials as a child… but now I am not so sure I am pleased with the thought anymore.

I am... unsure of how to explain the ability my people have in a way that you humans would understand. However I will try to make it as clear as I can.
We are made with adaptation buried in every part of our code, of our very spark even. When we are freshly forged we imprint on a mentor, or I suppose 'father' would be a more fitting title considering your language. From our 'fathers' we learn all it is to be a Cybertronian and we adapt to fit in, becoming near clones of our mentors for a time until we begin to take on bits and pieces of other behaviors before finally changing ever so slightly to become our own beings. We absorb everything during those formative years, it defines who we are and how we think. Then once we reach a certain age, that adaptation slows and things start to stick and personality cements itself.
I bring this up because even once fully developed, this ability to adapt and take on traits of others remains active, although it no longer affects the personality of the mech in question. That means that Cybertronians keep their ability to rapidly adapt, but they do not actually absorb any of the behaviors they are taking on unless they actively will themselves to.
I don't think you understand just how terrifying that ability is Agent Witwicky. My kin can pretend and flawlessly take on human traits and mean exactly none of it. They are the galaxy's greatest pretenders and not a spark knows it unless they see the effects for themselves. Its a natural thing for Cybertronians, but its all calculated, they know exactly what they are doing.
Every action, every word, and every last motion... all carefully curated and selected from observing your people.
Did you notice how upon their initial arrival they were stiff, formal, and hardly even moved as they stared you down, watching with critical optics as you conversed and operated? You are wondering how I know what they did? Why its simple. I have seen it over and over again, the same process reenacted every time one of my ilk come to new worlds. I did not need to be there, I am certain of what they did upon their arrival. The very first thing they do is watch, it is how they determine the correct course of action for speech and body language and how they decide how to introduce themselves.
The Prime... did he try to copy the one who presented as the leader of your group? If so, it is because he was testing the waters, pushing buttons to see how you would react and running through so much data your organic minds would explode just from one moment of enduring it. I can assure you that you were scanned and you absolutely were picked apart and given a rank in the Prime's mind as he worked to begin blending in.
That's how it always starts, always with the watching... the eerie... Primus forsaken watching.
How long did they watch? Did their optics linger on your personnel for longer than they should have? Did any of your fellows flinch or laugh at certain actions? I can guarantee that every single reaction was noted by one of the many optics of the Prime and his team. Every movement and action was most certainly run through a database for similar data before being shared with the others and contemplated. Then I can promise you that almost as if a switch were flipped, they began associating in a more friendly manner.
I'm right aren't I? Of course I am... I've seen it time and time again. This is the nature of my kind. We watch and we learn, we observe and study those we wish to imitate and then take on what we find to be the best traits to blend in. I do it myself too, although to a lesser degree.
I created this personality, or rather I altered my real one to be understood and comprehended by you humans. Acting is what we do, its how we work. Every single moment is an act... always an act... but it keeps us safe, it keeps ME safe. They can't find me if I act like you little things and stay quiet... they can't touch me here, not while I blend in far better than they ever could... yes, a perfect adaptation. I know you creatures, I know how to be you should I desire. They couldn't possibly find me, not while I remain hidden away.
And they called me a fool...

Oh yes... apologizes. I will finish my statement.
I believe I have rambled enough. To put it simply... they will watch, they will learn, and when they have time, they will consume your knowledge to blend in even more. Before you know it, they will have taken on personalities and mannerisms so similar to your own that you will hardly be able to tell that they are anything more than organics within metallic shells.
My advice is simply to be aware. They will watch... always they will watch. Even when you think they aren't, they will observe, they will listen, and they will learn until they can pick you apart. piece. by. piece. Don't speak on matters you want to be kept secret anywhere near them or their tech. Don't expose your weaknesses or tell them anything that would point toward vulnerability. They will remember that information, and should they need something, they will adapt to use that to their advantage.
Don't show them desire. Don't show them fear. If you want to keep them from having a hold over you beyond what they have already gathered, you must play the game as well. It may not be natural, but for your own sake pretend, don't let them have any power over you. They know the game, and they will know that you know it too, so act subtly. Keep quiet and observe as they do.
Play their games and use it against them. That is all I can tell you to do little organics.

[Redacted]'s statement is very concerning, however additional analysis leads me to believe that we may need to begin taking their words with a greater grain of salt. [Redacted] has shown a great deal of personal connection to what they are speaking on. Emotion may be clouding their judgement and skewing their assessments.
[Redacted]'s information is still invaluable, but I do not think it wise to trust them. [Redacted] is afraid, and that I feel may be altering their views on the Autobots and presenting them in a darker way. For all we know the Autobots could simply be doing this adaptation out of courtesy. We cannot know for sure, not while [Redacted] remains so unstable.
Perhaps a statement will need to be collected from the Autobots as required.

The Journey to Cure Wing: A history of magical boys in PreCure

As the Pretty Cure franchise jumps into 20th anniversary celebrations, the 20th season, Soaring Sky Pretty Cure, has introduced a lot of firsts for the franchise: a blue-themed leader who isn’t from Earth, as well as an adult Cure, the first with a driver’s license. But one piece of news lit up like no other: for the first time, there would be a boy on the team, with Cure in his name, who isn’t a supporting character or sidekick. It’s been a long journey but this is significant for the show, and also for the genre as a whole, since Pretty Cure is now the dominant magical girl series for Japanese children. How did we get here?
When Futari wa PreCure began in 2004, it was a show focused on not just entertaining young girls, but also showing that girls can enjoy activities stereotypically associated with boys without detracting from their femininity. With the tagline “Girls want to rampage too”, it was no surprise there was no rush to include boys in this series. To be sure, a lot of magical girl series, especially those intended to sell toys in the girls’ aisle, have historically been a no-boys-allowed party, though they’ve been a secondary part of the genre since Cub caused trouble with Sally in Sally the Witch (1966). By the mid 2000s, all the big magical girl series were only about girls, with exceptions in Tokyo Mew Mew (2002) and Phantom Thief Jeanne (1999), which both featured magical boys who were separate entities and love interests to the protagonists. It would be a few more years before Shugo Chara (2007) and Anyamal Detectives Kiruminzoo (2009) presented magical boys as parallel team members and equal parts of a magical girl team.

Day 33 of Tourdust:
This was perhaps an unexpected entry into this journal, aware of some of our very own tumblrines in the crowd but expecting them to get outnumbered by the Sports People, who were there for the Champion of the Centuries at best.
It wasn't so. The barricade filled like a small venue with emos and other alt people, who brought so much energy that it had Patrick and Pete scrambling, plotting things on the dead mics as we watched in concern for those of us at the frontlines, through our communication with mandie, an old friend of ours.
They didn't quite plan for this, but this didn't mean they planned to keep things to old singles either, after all these years keeping her in the vault, they're standing up for their right to cheat at the stadium's parking lot, presumably with Gritty. And while they did not call this day's tour debut an 8 ball, I Don't Care, we don't care. We're too busy recovering from all the growling.
Our sights have not yet turned to suspecting Patrick of being online, in fact if he was, despite all the flourish and energy of today he would probably have avoided all the gestures that call back to these past couple of days' recurring gifsets. The drummer-to-drummer communication enhanced by mutual sunglasses that lead to a (more restrained) deviltricklike humping of his guitar in front of known soul punk girlie* Andy and the sunglasses getting placed on his shirt, straining that neckline further like a taxi driver sweating an ocean as he was. Perhaps it's best if we say nothing about the re-circulation of the locker room photoshoot this morning.
And so the whispers continued, to dead mics and among us, who became VAR referees in determining if there was contact on today's lean. The verdict, with witness accounts and 3 different angles, is that we'd red card them but we don't want them to be unable to play next show.
Like I said, we were not expecting much today, less so than for the festivals, and yet, even after we got what we thought was the stealth 8 Ball, a question was presented. Not to The Magic 8 Ball, but to this crowd of emos who against all odds were not being pussies and instead being energetic and crowdsurfing like this was a 2004 show:
"We don't always do this, because sometimes when we play these shows the crowd is not here for it, but should we play Saturday?"
In Spite Of It All, unplanned, among whispers to dead mics, fueled by the crowd cheering them on so much, it became a Saturday saturday.
I leave now to tend to the wounded and enjoy of the rare buzz of activity in foblr with a show at this early hour. Perhaps we do have some things in common with the Sports people after all. I wouldn't know, just like Patrick I know nothing about sports.

Aikawa Chouka was born on March 14th, 1999 in Milan, Italy. And unlike most in her field, she was born into immense wealth and prestige. Her father, Aikawa Chujirō (also known as Michael Aikawa), is the current president and CEO of the Aikawa Group. Originally founded in 1969 as a technology conglomerate, the company old its shares twenty years later for $20 billion, turning itself into a sprawling holdings company. Owning mostly luxury brands (including Versace), they also own multiple department stores in the United States such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s, and even Paramount. The Aikawa Group has been touted as the “Samsung of Japan,” and with a net worth of over $480 billion, the Aikawa family is the richest in the world.
Meanwhile, Chouka’s mother, Nakamura Aiko (also known as Liliane Aikawa) is an accomplished, London-born actress and designer, as the founder of luxury lifestyle brand Lily by Liliane, as well as a socialite, art dealer, and former model. Aiko was born into a family older and wealthier than her husband’s (or at least that would’ve been true in 1990), and is the only child of Nakamura Hiroaki, the president of the Nakamura Foods Company. Founded all the way back in 1909 (although the Nakamura family was rather high up in Japanese society generations prior), the food packing conglomerate is worth over $20 billion. Like her husband’s family, Aiko’s family also owns a department store, having acquired ownership of the Tokyu Department Store in 2009.
Obviously, Chouka grew up in the lap of luxury. Living in Milan for the first five years of her life, she attended a Japanese international school and learned her native language of Japanese, along with Italian and English. In 2004, Chouka and her family moved to Kyoto. And due to her family’s wealth, they would spend a lot of time moving.
During the summers of 2009 and 2010, they would live in three separate cities: Berlin, Amsterdam, and Paris. Starting in 2011, they would live in Singapore for a year. And finally, in 2015, the Aikawa family would move for the final time to the wealthy neighborhood of Aoyama in Tokyo. Chouka completed her final two years of high school there, and was involved in quite a few extracurriculars. She was a cheerleader, a member of her school’s tennis team, and she served as editor-in-chief of its newspaper club. Chouka would move again in 2016, but without her parents this time. She spent that winter at a boarding school in Switzerland, like most rich girls of her caliber.
By then, Chouka was a seasoned ballet dancer. At the age of three, she was placed in classes by her mother at the request of Chouka’s grandmother. She attended two separate ballet academies at some point: the Dutch National Ballet Academy and the Paris Opera Ballet. For years, Chouka believed that she would become the world’s next prima, but the universe had different plans.

For the most part, Chouka’s childhood was normal. However, when you have a designer for a mother, you tend to get dragged to a whole lot of fashion shows. At the tender age of thirteen, she attended her first show for Dior. And it wasn’t just that, either. Chouka grew up watching her grandmother order couture from Paris and Milan, she would be gifted old pieces from her mother, and her father even gifted her Louis Vuitton for her tenth birthday. After that Dior show, however, Chouka’s entire world changed.
She became quite obsessed with fashion, and she would spend hours flipping through fashion magazines or rummaging through her mother’s closet. All the balls and launch parties and red carpet events that Chouka would attend with her family changed her outlook on fashion, and after she was scouted by a modeling agency at fifteen, her interest only grew. She attended Fashion Weeks in Tokyo and New York, and modeled for brands like Betsey Johnson.
Chouka kind of knew that her career as a model was temporary, though, and her “true calling” was a fashion designer or journalist (courtesy of her mother). With the rise of the beauty guru, Chouka’s interest in fashion blogs, and all the time she spent on Instagram, however, she decided that, instead, she would become social media famous.
In 2015, Chouka launched a blog of her own: Love Moda. This was unusual for her family, as like the real-life, Japanese rendition of the Young family from Crazy Rich Asians, they were notoriously private. They would sporadically appear in news articles, Aiko would give the occasional magazine interview solely for brand reasons or to promote a new project, and Chujirō mainly limited his media appearances to business publications. Obviously, though, Chouka had vastly different aspirations. Love Moda was mentioned in an editorial she did with Tatler, and that kind of exposure—plus the fact that she had money—made interest in her blog skyrocket. By 2016, it had amassed over 10,000 readers.
By the next year, Chouka had cemented herself as a somewhat of a “baby influencer.” Despite the invites to Paris fashion shows and the articles being written about her in Vogue, however, she was far from mainstream. Her small legion of fans wanted her to be, though. Chouka was asked to start a YouTube channel by one of them, and so on May 19th, 2017, she did.
Chouka was already a bit of a “micro-celebrity,” so by the summer, her sizable following had transferred to her new channel. Her YouTube gradually begin to grow larger than her blog as the beauty community gained traction themselves, and her status as the “Aikawa Group heiress” was definitely a selling point, alongside her feminine, “rich girl” fashion and peculiar accent. By the end of 2017, the brand deals were beginning to roll in, and everyone was gradually starting to know her name.
In 2018, a particular video of Chouka’s suddenly went viral. What followed afterwards was the exact mainstream fame that she’d been looking for. She moved to Los Angeles from New York and was scoring ambassadorships with the likes of Kate Spade, Nina Ricci, and even Prada. She was getting invited to award shows, launch parties, and was a seasoned Fashion Week attendee at that point. And by 2019, Chouka blew up even further. She was named “fashion’s newest It girl,” she made her way into the acting industry, and it was pretty much impossible to escape her.
2018 was also a rather difficult year for her, though. At that point, Chouka had been a ballerina for sixteen years. But with her rising career online, she knew that she couldn’t pursue her lifelong dream of prima stardom without giving up her YouTube career.
Although ballet would always have a special place in her heart, her career aspirations had obviously changed. Even then, though, Chouka was still training, and she still wanted to attend another ballet academy. But balancing that and what clearly transformed from a hobby into her way of life was asking for too much. So that year, Chouka hung up her pointe shoes and bid goodbye to ballet. That decision was a difficult one, but it was probably for the best, as her career as an influencer has done more for her than a ballet career ever would. And there was still a whole lot more in store.

Within the next five years, Chouka would grow to become one of the best fashion influencers on the planet, with 11 million subscribers, over twenty brand deals, and countless successful business ventures to her name. Even with a billion dollar bank account, though, she—like most influencers nowadays—couldn’t help but branch into the music industry.
In late 2023, Chouka signed to Republic Records and Avex Trax to manage her American and Japanese activities, promising her fans a debut by the next year. And on April 5th, 2024, she fulfilled her promise. Debuting with the single “Girls Don’t Cry,” her debut was a smash hit. Surprisingly, it was received far better than the music of other influencers, nearly becoming a No. 1 hit and turning Chouka into an up and coming pop princess. Even with her previously existing and clearly successful career, Chouka has plans for an album, a Japanese debut, and a potential Korean debut. Her first single already has fans eager to see what she has next, and her next projects can turn her into not only an It girl of the fashion world, but an It girl of the music industry, as well.

Backstory:
Yu doesn’t talk much about himself, thinking the past less important than the present, but he does, from time to time, with people who are close to him, divulge his past to them.
A child to a multiracial, multicultural family, he was made aware of the stark differences between both his parents, yet, they still supported and loved each other with all their hearts. Yu took after his father a little bit more, with the tendencies of his mother; stern and overachieving. He learned both Japanese and Tagalog at an early age, sent to immersion school for Japanese and Tagalog and having to speak both at home.
Homeschooled for the majority of his life till high school, he had to learn English and other subjects, learning from his retired grandma who lived with them on the weekdays. She was also the person to get him into art, starting by encouraging him to draw and paint to his heart’s content.
During high school, he was the awkward, shy nerd that people bullied, and was usually mocked for being weird, but he ignored them, in favor of talking to the teachers. This was when he learned from one of his teachers about the Theatre Program at their school. They handed him a flyer and basically told him to come watch their show.
He agreed to come, and when he sat down on his seat, he was immediately awestruck at the acting and performances given from the actors on stage. He joined and worked diligently to become an top-notch actor.
Play after play, he rose through seniority quickly, becoming a valued member of the team, but some students wanted him out of the plays entirely, so, they hatched a plan.
One of the spoiled rich kids had invited most of their family and apparently a few guests into their production, no matter how hard that was to believe. After, they deliberately sabotaged and booby trapped the stage to make Yu look bad, and at the start of the play. After, they silently changed the fliers they gave out to instead show a comedic show instead of a drama. These compiling issues had spelled the end of Yu.
He made a fool of himself on that stage, laughed at and mocked by the people he so desperately wanted to impress show off too. And not soon after his mistake of a play was circulated throughout school, and the bullying became much worse. He wanted to confront the rich girl and her friends but felt ultimately helpless and gave up on trying to defend himself.
Senior year, he left the play and isolated himself from everyone, graduating and moving out of California to Japan to study, vowing to work only and nothing else.
Oh how life turned out after…

Jia Aili, a pioneering member of a new generation of Chinese artists, is best known for works embodying at once art historical knowledge and a drive to challenge painting’s existing forms and boundaries. Jia’s aim in his early work was to reflect a correspondence between the vulnerability of individuals and shifts in society as a whole. He has pursued and developed this idea through a wide-ranging practice variously incorporating abstraction, portraiture, fantastic imagery, scenes from daily life, and cultural motifs, skillfully blending past, present, and future.
Jia was born in Dandong in Northeast China in 1979. His childhood and teenage years witnessed the radical transformation of the country. He graduated from the Second Studio (New Representationalism) of the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang Tiexi District in 2004, and subsequently taught there from 2005 to 2007. After the teaching engagement, Jia moved to Black Bridge Village in Beijing, and his breakout solo exhibition The Wasteland opened in the same year, launching him onto the international scene.
In 2008, the year in which Beijing hosted the Olympic Games, Jia began to work on We Are from the Century (2008–11). This epic painting demonstrates his mastery of Socialist Realist technique and deep knowledge of the old masters, including the use of layers of thin, translucent color to generate an active dialogue between light and shadow, shape and space. The looser aspects of Jia’s brushwork make reference to the talismanic imagery of ancient Chinese Taoist drawings, serving his aim of exploring self-analysis in the context of the shared human condition. In subsequent works, Jia brings a fluid naturalism to bear, depicting sites of uncanny believability and evoking atmospheres of emotional heft. Characterizing his process as fundamentally intuitive, Jia applies formal logic to the summoning of a transcendent vision.
Over the past decade, Jia has continued to work at monumental scale, expanding on the dark, theatrical look of his earlier canvases through subtler and more complex coloration and structure. The evolution of his practice can be traced through a sequence of exhibitions at venues including the Singapore Art Museum (2012); Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi, Venice (2015); Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, Spain (2017); and Gagosian, New York (2019). Among the twenty-nine paintings featured in the last of these was the four-panel Sonatine (2019), in which hard-edge polyhedrons drift across transcendent scenes connected by themes of disintegration, reflecting the artist’s latest breakthrough as a painter. Since 2018, Jia has maintained a studio in New York.

From Omega and Next Dimension, better don't ask me; my mind lives in denial. My favorite characters are the Golden Saints, especially Aioros and Aioria, being Aioria my super favorite.
Thanks to Saint Seiya I developed a great love for the stars 💫 and I have many scientific books on the subject, as well as books of myths and legends about the constellations ✨.
💥 I'm a Marvel Girl. I love those tormented superheroes and antiheroes. I basically grew up watching Marvel since Iron Man came out in 2008 and I immersed myself fully in the world of the comics, I have a lot of comics and books on my bookshelf 🤭. My favorites are: Iron Man ♥️, Captain America, Spider-Man, Loki, the X-Men, Black Widow and Scarlet Witch, in all their presentations and with all their charms and defects!.

I love it K-Dramas like Goblin: The lonely and great God, Crash landing on you, Tale of the Nine Tailed 😋, I have also watched many animes like Sailor Moon, Ouran High School Host Club, Toradora, Code Geass, Inuyasha, Kaleido Star, Shaman King, Attack on Titan... it's a long list and I don't remember everything at this moment 🤔. Miraculous Ladybug (I know it's for kids, but ... there is Chat Noir 🖤).
🐉In my House of the Dragon era 🖤: Like many people, I was also terribly disappointed with the horrible ending of Game of Thrones, but I really loved Fire and Blood when I read it in 2020... so I decided to give the serie a chance when I saw the first trailer... and I don't regret it! 🥳. I liked Daemon and Rhaenyra so much in the book and absolutely loved them in the TV Show! (Matt and Emma are incredible! ❣️). Another character that I loved in the book and the one I always wanted to know more about was Jacaerys Velaryon and I must say that I am very pleased with the choice of Harry Collett 😍 (oh yeah baby! 🔥).
I really hope that the directors and writers do justice to this wonderful crown prince! 🥰, because for me he is already one of my favorite characters of all time! ❣️.
🎥 Favorite Movies: Troy 2004 (did I mention I'm a Greek mythology lover?), the Star Wars saga 💫 (1-6 only), The Great Gatsby, A Walk to Remember, Harry Potter 🪄 (books and movies), The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit trilogy, The Hunger Games saga ❣️(books and movies), The Twilight saga 😊 (books and movies).
I love Studio Ghibli movies with all my heart 💗 since my dad bought me the movie of Kiki Delivery Service when I was a 6-year-old little girl.
I love everything Disney and Pixar does 💗😘. (think of the happiest things, It's the same as having wings! 🎶)
🎧 Music: I have a very varied taste in music, some would say strange 😅, but if I like the rhythm and lyrics of the song I will surely add it to my playlist (mainly I like rock), AC / DC, Queen, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Within Temptation, Imagine Dragons, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Lana del Rey, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. I enjoy classical music too 🩷.
⭐ Something more about me: I am an inveterate dreamer and extremely perfectionist. I express myself better by writing than talking 😚.
I haven't drawn anything in almost 5 years and when I did I used to draw with traditional media (watercolor, charcoal, colored pencils, gouche and acrylic paints 🖌️).
But since October (from last year), when I saw Harry Collett as Prince Jacaerys, I felt a desire to draw that I hadn't felt in a long time ❣️.
This is my first time trying to draw in digital media, I hope you like what you see! 😘 (YouTube tutorials don't fail me now! 😭). I spent the whole summer practicing🥺.

NATO Baltic Air Police Mission enters the 20º year
Spanish F-18 aviators and fighters are on deployment to Estonia to join NATO's latest Baltic Air Police mission, which turned 20 on March 29.

NATO's Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission entered its 20º year on March 29, 2024, at a time when eight Spanish F-18 fighters and 150 members of the Spanish Air Force's 'Vilkas' tactical air detachment move to Estonia to take responsibility for airspace security in the region.
The total number of Spanish Air Force personnel will also include aviators from the Armament and Experimentation Logistics Center to help in electronic warfare, and an additional A400 and its crew, bringing the number of employees to almost 190 soldiers.

The BAP is a purely defensive development, according to NATO, intended to offer protection to NATO members, as well as partner nations and potential future members.
?? On March 29th, we celebrated not only the 20th anniversary of Lithuania's NATO membership but also the anniversary of NATO#BalticAirPolicing. On this occasion, we spoke with ?? Major General Harold Van Pee, the first commander of the Baltic Air Policing mission back in 2004.

In the absence of the means of air force necessary to participate in the BAP, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia shared a single standard of security throughout NATO's European airspace through the four-month rotation of external air forces stationed at air bases in Siauliai, Lithuania and Ämari, Estonia.
The three NATO Allied Baltic nations contribute to the mission through infrastructure and air command and control personnel and other support from the host nation. The expansion of the mission's area of operation includes Ämari Air Base, which began after the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014.

Considering the geographical circumstances of Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave separated from mainland Russia, Russian air activity in the region is large, but the aircraft of the Russian Federation were diverted from NATO airspace over these countries on repeated occasions during the 20 years of the BAP.
In 2014, after Russia's annexation of ?? Crimea, NATO realized that what were once considered outdated military threats had not disappeared. Since then, our Allies have taken important steps to strengthen deterrence & defence on the NATO Eastern flank. We are sincerely grateful.

NATO aircraft are used to visually confirm and divert violations of Russian aircraft that often fly close to NATO airspace without transponders and without communicating with NATO air traffic control or presenting a flight plan, according to NATO.

After the completion of a Royal Air Force (RAF) BAP rotation in Estonia in August 2023, the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense declared that since March 2023 RAF Typhoon jets have intercepted 50 Russian aircraft, with more than 300 interceptions occurring in 2023 alone.
