September 29 Day Countdown (12/29): 2019/03/26 Global Chinese Golden Chart 《流行音乐全金榜》 Live Broadcasted Radio Interview on Dragonfly FM
(40:55) Zhou Shen: “A lot of interviewers ask, ‘what do you want to say to your fans?’ To be honest, I’ve thought this question over millions of times, but in the end, the only thing you can say is ‘thank you.’ It’s really all you can say. All you have is just, ‘thank you,’ and you carry this gratitude with you as you do your best in everything. I think that’s the best thing you can say to them.”
(35:45) Interviewer talks about how fans find resonance with their idols; Zhou Shen thanks shengmi for being his 知音 (”zhiyin,” literally translates to “knowing the sound” and means someone who understand your music, used to refer to a close friend who understands you.)
Interviewer: The relationship fans have with idols and singers is changing (ZS: it’s getting closer and closer)—it's more of a chemical reaction; it’s not just their music, but this person’s temperament, their personality, the look in their eyes—that draws fans. How magnetic they are directly determines how long fans will follow them after the competition ends. You give me that feeling—I think your fans will keep increasing as you keep appearing in more and more shows, and more and more they see what kind of person you are.
Zhou Shen: (36:20) But to be honest, I don’t know how to repay them. The more I think about it, doing my best in singing seems to be the one thing I can do. (Interviewer: The works you produce are the most important.) Yeah, especially seeing that I am a singer—this is my profession.
Interviewer: (37:00) Sometimes, to fans, their idols are almost like their family. Actually, fans only have one requirement of their idols. They won’t say it out loud—they’ll say “oh don’t tire yourself out too much”—but they do have one requirement of their idols: don’t shrink back. (ZS: *makes a thoughtful noise*) No matter what the occasion, no matter what the condition, or at what state you think your career is at. Some idols will think “my career has already reached a plateau, I can’t do it anymore,” but the reality is, in their heart, your fans need you to not shrink back no matter what. (ZS: right right right right) Because if you shrink back, that means the hopes they’ve placed on you all these years has been misplaced.
(4:00) Zhou Shen talks about how he used to sing online, on a chatroom-like platform (YY) that was very simple compared to the livestream platforms that are popular today. He talks about singing a lot of JJ Lin’s songs and old classics, and how he didn’t take song requests because they always requested songs he didn’t want to or know how to sing (ZS: “You just pretend you don’t see it” LMAO). Interviewer ascertains that Zhou Shen had quite a bit of popularity online at that time.
Interviewer: “Have you ever counted how many fans have listened to you since [your online days as Kabu?]”
Zhou Shen: Yeah, yeah, yeah! There are, yeah! I don’t know how many there are, but I’ll see a lot of people who still call me Kabu. They tell me that they started listening to me then and have never stopped since. They have a lot of strength. (Interviewer: ? Strength?) During that period, there were quite a few people that listened to my singing. But then after I did a face reveal as Kabu… *dramatic sigh* *laughs* (Interviewer: Was it a problem for you before? Your voice not matching what they imagined you to be.) It wasn’t my problem, it was their problem. (*laughs*) *sings* Some people they leave~ disperse~
(6:45) Zhou Shen, at the interviewer’s insistence, sings 土鸡蛋 but in this version he actually feels an ounce of self-consciousness LMAO (also you get to hear the chorus of the song??)
(1:03:15) They play a game where the interviewer flips his songs backwards and Zhou Shen has to guess what song it is; ZS guesses the first one completely wrong. Interviewer: (1:06:25) “Because when you’re singing, you’re breathing out, but flipped backwards, your breath is going back in like *makes slurping sound*”
(1:14:20) You’ve heard of the 原生 wakeup alarm from the C929 Chengdu concert, now get ready for the 原生 good night alarm (T/N: I am begging you to listen to this LMAO); Zhou Shen: “Are you ready?” *one of the staff moves one meter away* “Eh? (*taking mock offence*) Why are you hiding?!”
Interviewer after ZS finishes singing: “I really want to grab that thing [that was used to reverse the songs during the game] and take away that horrible sound. (ZS: *laughs in coloratura high C*) What was that?! You need to apologize to all 原生 singers.” (ZS: *still laughing, starts to wheeze*)
