greetings, fellow human beings!
there hasn't been a bird update in quite some time, largely because I haven't seen anything but crows out and about in my yard, but it appears there has been a new daily visitor!
a cat has taken a liking to prancing around the place hunting for a quick lunch. it's pretty chonky and well-fed, which is why I assume it belongs to one of the neighbors.
I haven't been able to get a closer look at it, but it seems to have brown/black striped or spotted fur. usually all I see is a messy blur jumping onto the nearest tall object to run away from me, so I can't really tell
it has had a lot of fun climbing the trees and I've caught it snooping around some bird's previous nesting spaces, so hopefully it won't be too much of a threat to the local feathery population ^-^

FRONT YARD UPDATE 3/15/2023
Side view of the fenced section
Side view from the other side
Row #1= corn and a pumpkin
Row#2 = carrots that are starting to reach a seeding stage and some chard. You can kinda see that the nasturtiums in row 3 are starting to creep over.
Row #3 = nasturtiums, peas and there is one more carrot that is starting to grow a flower stalk
Row #4 = 2 pre bought peppers and a project my sister (@thestudentfarmer ) started with Lentils. The lentils will be mulched into the garden when we have new plants ready to go into the ground.
Close up of some peas, we harvested 3 oz of peas today
We have to do some tidying up but my mint plant has survived through the winter and has spread about 1/2 way down the flower bed.

Fall's here y'all
Which means it's now far too cold to leave the absolutely massive number of house plants I have outside.
To my dismay
This spot is absolutely magical in the summer. I’m so head over heels in love with my porch that many times over the warm months my partner had to come outside to gently prod in reminding me that food has to be cooked and I have spent the entire day outside losing complete track of time.
I smoke my pipe and hookah out here. I eat my breakfasts and drink my coffee here. I get to wave to all the neighbors and occasionally give away a few plants and veggies.
I love this pouch.
Unfortunately it becomes a barren wasteland in the winter months because I'm just not comfortable sitting outside if it's below 60F, a temperature nowhere even near the average my area gets in the cold months.
Winter is a real downer for me.
But I do have my own little escape in the attic.
The air was noticeably fresher after bringing all these up here. I had spent the entire day before cleaning this space and it was hot and muggy and stale and now It's like stepping into a forest. The air is still humid but now it's a nice kinda oxygenated humid.
The last headcount I did for this space was over 114 individual pots but not necessarily number of plants. I’m really big into companion planting and will very often allow plants to share a pot if the space is available so many of these pots have more than one plant growing in them.
I think they grow better when they have friends.
This count isn't for every plant I got. The big boys like the miracle berry tree/aloe/monstera stay downstairs all winter since hualing plants that lorge into the attic is difficult with the non standard stairwell size and I'll be honest this space is already full to the gills.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my boyfriend for helping me bring all these up here load after load when we both realized we had only that day to move all these little bastards before the frost.
I’ve set up a auto waterer. Some of these plants need more water than I can keep up with so this is really nice for those periods when the winter depression hits hardest.
A handy little thing if you're like me and have a pretty demanding watering schedule:

Really easy to set up. Looks like it fits on just about any kind of bucket lip. I just keep a bucket up here filled with water from the rain barrels. Runs on a battery or a USB. Saved my taros from certain death last year.
Those bitches needs so much fuckin' water.
Anyways. Just giving an update on the plants. I'll talk about the downstairs ones in another post.

bird update! or rather yard update, since this one only tangentially has to do with birds :p
the neighbor's cat greeted me today! so far I've only been able to observe her from afar as she did her thing, but this morning she came up to my window and meowed lots until I noticed her.
she didn't seem distressed, so we just had a nice and polite conversation with each other. it seems that me being there was new for her too, since I was up a little earlier than usual.
here's some observations I made during her short visit: she is neither very fluffy or very not-fluffy, so basically a normal cat shape, although she looks very young (not a kitten, but maybe a teenage/young adult cat if you can call it that). her eyes are also very big and pretty!
she seems to be very curious and friendly - overall, 10/10 experience, would definitely recommend meeting your neighbor's cat and having a chat with them :D
