Questioner: Will we see Xisis again?
Brandon Sanderson: Almost assuredly, you will see Xisis again. All of those really ancient Yolish dragons are around, you’re gonna be seeing them here and there. The story of the cosmere’s not really about them, but they stay involved. Xisis will be seen again.

You may have noticed I have reblogged a lot of posts about dragons recently.
This is because dragons are cool.

This is Xisis from Tress of the Emerald Sea btw.
Edit: This is the official art from the book. I did not make this.

Is Xisis the one mentioned in the rhythm of war ars arcanum? The one named Foil who lives on the bottom of an ocean and has something to do with aethers?

If we plot Tress of the Emerald Sea to the Princess Bride (it’s very obvious inspiration) then we can see that the Dragon Xisis plays the same role in the story as Miracle Max does.
My point is that if there was ever to be an animated adaptation of Tress Billy Crystal should voice Xisis

Round 1 Part 8 Poll 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Spoilers ahead
Crow is what's called a "spore eater", which protects her from physical harm but also causes severe dehydration. Like most spore eaters, she feels the tradeoff is not worth it, so she manipulates her crew into piracy so they'll be desperate enough to venture into the dangerous seas where the dragon Xisisrefliel lives, as Xisis is reputed to be able to "cure" spore eaters. (It turns out that the cure requires ongoing maintenance from the dragon in order to be ongoingly effective, so her plan was flawed to begin with.)
It's Lucky Jack! On his very first command, took a frigate with a sloop, and filled up Port Mahón with prizes. He's a disaster on land, kind of shit with money, but he is brilliant at sea, ingenious and strategically minded. He loves his wife, Sophie, and his bestie, Stephen Maturin, and he gets up to all sorts of hijinks with the latter. He rescued Stephen from being tortured by the French, actually, and Stephen frequently uses his own connections to try and work to Jack's advantage. He's obsessed with gunnery, and his crew generally love him because he's disciplined but not a hard-horse, plus he's lucky and brings them lots of prizes and prize money. He's a jock, but later in life he starts to love math for its own sake, as well as becoming an astronomer of no mean ability; he's presented papers on math and astronomy to the Royal Society. He's a great musician, a violinist, and his duets with Stephen (a cellist) are so incredibly touching to read about. His music is just... beautiful. Stephen's hands were wrecked by torture, and later on we find out that Jack's been downplaying his own ability to match Stephen's level, because he'd rather play average with Stephen than perfectly alone.
There's so much more I could say but tldr he's the best I love him.

Cosmere Christmas Carols
If Cosmere versions of Christmas carols existed, here's what I think they'd be.
1. "All I Want For Christmas Are Hues" (To the tune of "All I Want for Christmas is You")
Origin: Nalthis
They sure do love their colors there, at least in Hallandren.
2. "Grandma Got Run Over By a Highstorm" (To the tune of "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer")
Origin: Roshar
It's still a jaunty tune, still a horrifying concept. Just imagine the Stormfather wearing a Santa hat.
3. "Grandma Got Run Over By a Giraffe" (To the tune of "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer")
Origin: Scadrial
Weirdly, this is one of those songs that exists on multiple worlds! Since Scadrial has giraffes, how could they not be a in a Christmas song?
4. "Away in a Chasm" (To the tune of "Away in a Manger")
Origin: Roshar
I imagine the Bridgemen singing this while in a dark humor, doing their work in the chasms on the Shattered Plains. There really is no room for a bed down there.
5. "Silver Dust" (To the tune of "Silver Bells")
Origin: Threnody
With the well-known lyrics, "Silver dust, silver dust / It's time for Shades in the forest / Make a ring / Safety bring / Let's have no with'ring today."
It's, uh, more jolly in Threnodite.
6. "Ironeyes is Coming to Town" (To the tune of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town")
Origin: Scadrial
This one is less jolly and more of a terrifying threat: "He sees you when you're sleeping / and he knows when you're awake / He knows if you've been bad or good / so be good for goodness' sake!" I'm already shaking and crying.
7. "Seagulls Roasting Over An Open Fire" (To the tune of "Chestnuts Roasting Over an Open Fire")
Origin: Lumar
They just...they sure did eat seagulls in that Tress book.
8. "Hark! The Herald Heralds Sing" (To the tune of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing")
Origin: Roshar
Who could forget that lovely number about all of the great advice that the herald Heralds left behind for mankind? "Hark! The herald Heralds Sing / Wash your hands / so you don't die / Sanitize your instruments / Rotspren wait to take your life." It, uh, rhymes in Rosharan.
9. "O Misty Night" (To the tune of "O Holy Night")
Origin: Scadrial
Ah yes, that classic opening: "O Misty Night / The stars are barely shining..."
10. "Wrapped in Red" (To the tune of, well, "Wrapped in Red")
Origin: Nalthis
If you don't know this song, check out the lyrics. It is all just about colors, colors, colors. No change necessary, really. Awakeners would love this one.
11. "Xisis Baby" (To the tune of "Santa Baby")
Origin: Lumar
The dragon in Tress granted wishes, after all. I'm sure there's a sultry number asking him for everything you can think of.
12. "Baby, There's Nightmares Outside" (To the tune of "Baby, It's Cold Outside")
Origin: Komashi
I mean, if you want to get your SO to stay inside a while longer with a creepy song, what better way than to point out that there are literally deadly Nightmares outside!
13. "Here Comes Ironeyes" (To the tune of "Here Comes Santa Claus")
Origin: Scadrial
Once again, this is not a happy song. It is a threat. Run! He's coming! He's coming RIGHT now!
14. "We Greater Good" (To the tune of "We Three Kings")
Origin: Canticle
The three old ladies who rule Beacon are called the "Greater Good." Hence this song, which naturally begins, "We Greater Good from Threnody are / On flying ships we travel afar..."
15. "I Saw Mommy Kissing Dalinar" (To the tune of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus")
Origin: Roshar
Well...this one isn't really a Christmas song as much as it's something Elhokar quietly whispers to himself alone at night, crying.

Crow:
Spoilers for Tress of the Emerald Sea: Crow is the leader of a pirate crew that sails on an ocean of deadly magic spores. Touching these spores will likely kill you, but somehow Captain Crow was infected with these spores without dying. When I’m danger vines created by the spores will sprout from her body and protect her, even being able to stop a bullet. However the spores inside her drain water from her body all the time and only do so faster as time goes on. This will cause her to eventually die of magic dehydration. She’s trying to force her crew to become deadrunners by killing the people on other ships rather than stealing from them. This mean if the crew was caught they’d be hanged rather than just locked up. This will make them more willing to make the perilous journey to the crimson sea to seek out the dragon Xisis who might be able to cure Crow.
Merlin:
His mother named him after the bird. He's also waiting for the love of his life (King Arthur) to wake up. HE'S BEEN WAITING FOR OVER 1000 YEARS

Dragons
Cheyenne Sedai: What research about the aethers is Xisis hoarding?
Brandon Sanderson: His biggest interest is how aethers break down, and he's really researching the water cycle, and trying to figure out how the seethe happens, because he's very interested in the decomposition of aethers, which is what's causing the seethe. That's what he is hoarding there.
He's got quite the establishment in Silverlight as well. Silverlight was once upon a time a bunch of dragon palaces, they all still have their skyscrapers there, basically. He's taking a little detour for some decades on Lumar, but his home base would be in Silverlight.
Cheyenne Sedai: That kind of answers my follow up question, that was, is his scholarly seclusion typical of dragons, or just something unique to him?
Brandon Sanderson: He's taken a bit of seclusion, but I wouldn't say... There's a whole bunch of different things about dragons. If you've got a Tamu Kek, you can contact them, you can pray to them, and they can actually influence your emotions. They're all kind of like little mini gods. They're not immortal immortal, but they're pretty long lived and functionally immortal.
They've been around for a while doing all kinds of stuff, so there's all kinds of things going on with them. Some of them will be secluded. Some of them take their duties very seriously, like Frost takes his duties very very very seriously. Other ones just don't care.
You will get some themes with dragons, they do like bargains, they do tend to have their interests, they do tend to collect people and have either followers or corporations or things like that--I don't want to go too cyberpunk on us, but yeah. You'll notice some themes the more you get to know them.
I will warn you, in the cosmere, there are more Anne McCaffrey style dragons, lesser dragons if you want, that do not have a human form. The greater dragons, as well call them, they're basically like amphibians, they have to spend a part of their life cycle in a humanoid form. They give birth in humanoid form, then have a transformation in puberty to dragon form, and then can go back and forth after that. But we've got some Anne McCaffrey style dragons, we've even got some little drakelings on one planet that are not six limbed and stuff like that.
We'll eventually have some more dragons, but when I was writing the early books in the cosmere, we were a little dragon flooded with Eragon and How to Train Your Dragon, so I didn't write the dragon stories. But maybe some day.
Cheyenne Sedai: That's fascinating. And also, that means we got our Tamu Kek, which seems to be a theme with these because we always have a Tamu Kek somewhere.
Brandon Sanderson: One of the few ways to have an ansible in the cosmere in the early days, pre technology, if you wanted to communicate between planets, this is one of the only ways.
Really handy to get a hold of one of those, or to get some seons. Before we get technological solutions, those were your two main ways to communicate across planets.

Ssp5 First Read Reaction. Here there be spoilers!
Oh shit, we're on Yolen!
This... this is a dragon! We're getting a full Cosmere dragon pov!
If her uncle is Frost... he sounds like Frost.
It rustng is. Oh storms. WHEN IS THIS BOOK SET?? Is this opening pre-Shattering?
"You can never be ruined" feels like its an important line for some reason.
Huh. What does the light have to do with it? Is the sun invested in some way? Like on Canticle? Was the Yolish sun important to Adonalsium?
Ooo... one of the shorts is in here as a flashback? Is it 6th or is it Silence? Those would be my guesses.
Its the 6th sequel! Freaking finally! Or at least half of it is.
Okay. Okay. So from the first draft we got a while ago - Dusk is planning to go into the Patji's perpendicularity and try and discover some way out of their predicament - caught between Scadrial and Roshar. I imagine the aviars and his time sailing are going to help him navigate the Cognative realm. So how is the prologue relevent? Will he meet Starling there or perhaps a modern day dragon pre-transformation? Gosh, imagine if you were a young dragon lost/trapped in the Cognative realm. My guess is the strange black sun there wouldnt have the same effect. Your body is ready to be reborn into something new but you're missing an important piece. That would be awful.
Well, lets see if this new version has any new clues.
A direct hint from the Radiant about the perpendicularity. Why did he mention it, I wonder? The implication has always been the aviar were the prime interest in First of the Sun.
Also, feeling more likely this fellow might be a servant of Odium. The bit about rising through the ranks through war feels kinda like how the Fused talk. Could concievably be Alethi, though.
Okay. Starling is the other main pov character. And she is trapped/exciled as a human. Due to Frost? Someone else?
I feel like my guess from above is going ro be surprisingly accurate, though not for the reasons I suspected. Also, does not seem that Starling is old enough for the prologue to be pre-Shattering.
Nazh jump scare.
...and he's dead. Rip, i guess.
Khriss is gonna be the engineer, isnt she?
Oh, its not. An Aetherbound. I figured with Nahz here she'd probably be around.
Awakened Metalminds as computers. I wanna see one.....
Xisis name drop.
Yeah, i was right. "You can never be ruined."
Is this also going to be our Silverlight story? I hope we at least get a glimpse.
Is Starling our 3rd Hoid apprentice? Thatd be intereating, eapecially if he "stole" her from Frost.
Ooo. Bird-human. New races, heck yeah.
Ooo. Hordeling doctor. All the alien crew is awesome. A shade, a dragon, a kenku, a bug hive-mind. Sounds like a little Star Trek story in the Cosmere.
Im definitely super excited. Ive been hankering for this story for a while. Dusk is definitely going to be meeting the crew of the Dynamic and learning just how big the Cosmere really is.
