I think the perfect Star Wars strategy game for me would be less like a 4X as Rebellion and Empire at War were, and rather have elements from MGS: Peace Walker or XCOM 2. You run Yavin Base or Echo Base, send squads like Phoenix Squadron or Kyle Katarn out to steal Imperial weapons and ships, then liberate planets. The Rebel Alliance isn't a polity that governs planets and dispatches armies, they're a mobile guerilla force using hit and run tactics.

earlier this year i started work for Hooded Horse, publisher of indie strategy games ✨ Here's a couple of the key art pieces I've done for them so far! First is Empires of the Undergrowth (the current key art on steam!) and one I did for Xenonauts-2 (an unsuccessful/unreleased piece I still really enjoy)

What Big Projects Are You Working On This Summer?
What Big Projects Are You Working On This Summer?
For my family, it’s getting our house ready for sale so we can make a cross-country move that’s been a long-time coming. A lot’s been done, and a lot more still needs to be done. Chief among them packing and downsizing. We’ve already donated a lot and thrown out a lot more, but who knows what else we might uncover? What do you have going on? Is it something just as involved, or (hopefully)…

Xenonauts 2 Demo is out!
I was very excited, and broke my YouTube/Twitch holiday just to play this demo. Which I think I am TERRIBLE at, because it is as difficult as Xenonauts is famed for being (or because my brain).

Been playing Terra Invicta and it's Extremely Compelling but holy shit it's slow paced. Like everybody warns you 'this game is slow paced, it was too slow paced for me' and you may think 'I am different' but there are basic functions which take 6 months to do. It takes 6 months to organise yourself within an infiltrated government in order to exert policy change. 6 months is 13 turns. Before techs years into the game, it takes a full year for each step from rival-neutral-ally-federated-unified. 26 turns. Currently I am waiting for an additional 15 rocket boosters to send mining infrastructure to my first moon base. With full influence over the United States, Taiwan and Scandinavia I produce 0.3 per month. Each month is two turns. I am 15+ hours into the game and it is early 2025. The game starts in 2022. Alien sympathisers just enacted coups throughout east africa, resetting my federations. It will take a year to get back on track. Slow.

Prepare Your Tactics: Xenonauts 2 with New Updates Now Available
Tumblr media
Milestone 2 update releases changes for Xenonauts 2 turn-based tactics game on Linux and Steam Deck via Windows PC. Thanks to the innovative team at Goldhawk Interactive for making these changes possible. Available via Steam, GOG, and Humble Store. If you're into strategy and action, there's some big news about Xenonauts 2 that you might find interesting. It's currently being developed and tested, having just released the Milestone 2 update to make the title even better. Playable on Linux and Steam Deck via Proton. The Milestone 2 update is all about adding variety and balancing the early parts of the experience. What this means is that when you start a new adventure, it'll be more engaging, with a lot of new things to discover. The developers have been listening to what players are saying and used that feedback to make these changes. One of the big updates in Milestone 2 is a new storyline right at the beginning, complete with a tutorial to help you get started. There’s also a new group called the “Cleaner” faction that plays a bigger role in the story now. As a result, your adventure will now last 200 days, giving you more time to deal with these human opponents before the aliens show up in full force.
Xenonauts 2 - Release Trailer
youtube
Now, let's talk about the update and what's new in Milestone 2 as well as the world itself. They’ve added five new crash site maps. These are places you'll explore, and they're replacing some old areas like the dockyard and jungle. Also, there are five brand-new types of missions to keep things exciting. These include Rescue Soldiers, Convoy Ambush, Rescue VIP, and two missions that involve dealing with this Cleaner group. There’s also something unique for those who like a bit of air combat: a new type of UFO called the Probe. It’s unmanned, but it’s great for practice and unlocks new research. As things progress in your adventure, this Probe becomes an escort for other UFOs.
Other Milestone 2 update changes include:
A rework of air combat and new ways to set up your aircraft
New heavy armor for your infantry
Better actions and behaviors for civilians in the game
Improvements to the game engine (the technology that makes the title run better)
The start of support for mods, which means you or others can create and add your own content
A lot of small fixes and tweaks to make everything smoother and more fun
Hope this gets you excited about what's new in the game. It’s shaping up to be an impressive experience, especially with all the Early Access upgrades. If you want all the Milestone 2 details, you can find the full patch notes for the update linked in the announcement. And if you’re looking to get into this adventure, you can find Xenonauts 2 on Steam and GOG, priced at $29.99 USD / £26.24 / 29,99€ with the 25% discount. Regularly priced on Humble Store. Playable on Linux and Steam Deck via Windows PC. If you're into strategy and alien battles, these Milestone 2 update changes are definitely worth checking out!

Xenonauts base building

#Xenonauts base building update
#Xenonauts base building Patch
The game has come together well over the past three months and if progress continues at this pace then completing the game in another three months is feasible provided nothing major goes wrong. The leaders of the worlds' governments have acted to create a global defense force to combat this threat: the 'Xenonauts'. Earth is being invaded by a group of alien races with an unknown, sinister purpose in mind. This is by no means a firm commitment, but it is the internal deadline we're working towards. Xenonauts is a 'planetary defense simulator' set in the Cold War years of 1979-80. The release date has not yet been announced. In 2015, the same studio announced their intent to develop Xenonauts 2. We are hoping to get the game by the end of the year. Xenonauts is a strategy turn-based video game developed and published by Goldhawk Interactive. If all goes to plan, anything after V20 will simply be bugfixing and final balancing on the existing systems.
#Xenonauts base building update
We are planning this to be the last update to the game that will include new features, and will be where we integrate the new interface, add all the maps, finish the AI, fix some problems with the game accuracy model etc. It's still a bit rough around the edges, perhaps, but you can see the final shape starting to emerge. However V19 was the first time someone sat down and worked on balance for several weeks and the result is something that feels much more like a "game" than it has before. Things like balance and the AI are still being worked on, and there are still missing art assets that have not yet been completed. That only covers the changes at a very high level the full changelog can be found here in a (very long) forum post.
Various visual updates like a new world map, many more painted ground tiles, etc.
All research descriptions written and edited.
#Xenonauts base building Patch
V19 Stable is basically three months of changes to the game rolled into a single large patch that has had much more testing than our usual updates, and should therefore be fairly stable (though it is still in beta and will not be completely bug-free).This is a brief summary of the improvements made in V19 over V18: This should now be fixed, and we apologise for this. The first thing to mention is that there was previously an error with our Desura version that meant people had to claim a Steam key and enter that before they could play on Desura. These are all uploaded and should be authorised in the next 24 hours if they are not already available for download. It's time for another update from the team busily working on Xenonauts! We have recently released V19 Stable of the game and have finished the process of porting the updates over to Mac and Linux uploading the game to Steam / Desura / Humble Store.

Check the price history of the game to determine how good the deal is in relation to historical low offers. All offers already include discounts from vouchers to save you time and money. GG.deals aggregates game keys from over 40 digital distribution stores so you can find the best deals on video games. A lot of time has gone into weaving the two very different halves of the game together into something that feels both natural and enjoyable. If your base is attacked, you fight the defence in a perfect replica of your base. Commence a battle at night and you'll be fighting the mission in the darkness with reduced sight range. If you shoot a Scout UFO down over a polar area, you get a Crash Site mission where you can capture a crashed Scout UFO in an Arctic tileset. As such, no game plays out the same twice. Detailed, Emergent Simulation: Xenonauts contains no scripted missions, just broad rules setting the pace of the invasion. You will grow to care about the brave men and women under your command as they slowly grow from green rookies into hardened veterans, but that only makes it more painful when their heroic tale is cruelly cut short by a burst of plasma fire. Persistent Soldiers: Soldiers in Xenonauts are persistent from mission to mission, improving their stats and gaining ranks with combat experience - but their deaths are always only a single bad move away.It slowly reveals the intentions and origins of the invaders, while also unlocking new battlefield equipment, aircraft and vehicles for you to use as you harness alien technology and turn it against them. Research Tree: Xenonauts has an extensive research tree with almost a hundred projects to unlock, each with its own unique description and painted artwork.Your funds are limited - are you going to spend them on battlefield equipment, more scientists, or expanding your coverage of the planet? Your priorities must be balanced carefully if you are to win the war. You need to balance the needs of your funding nations with your own. Strategic Management: You will also be managing the defence of the planet, dealing with the invading alien UFOs with your customisable interceptors.Deeply asymmetric combat keeps the battles interesting - after all, you're fighting intergalactic invaders with 1970's ballistic technology! You'll experience the chill of encountering a new alien for the first time and the joys of test-firing a new weapon for the first time. Missions range from capturing crashed UFOs or alien bases to defending cities (or even Xenonaut facilities) against alien attack. Ground Combat: Xenonauts delivers tense turn-based combat across realistic, varied and fully-destructible battlefields, against almost fifty different variants of enemy.
#Xenonauts base attack mac
Please note that the native Mac / Linux versions of the game are still in beta, however older WINE-wrapped "ports" are available and known to be stable whilst development of the native ports is still ongoing. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it! We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions. Xenonauts is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat.

Xenonauts xce
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robots and reapers are close to immune to suppression so don't even bother. Throw one and watch them run, easy target. They hate fire and are blinded by its light. Anyway, most mods are for CE only, and properly customize,d the game really shines, so no real point in going native binary, but CE-less - you would be *much* better playing OpenXcom, then. Incendiary grenades (XCE only) Against Sebillians only. report dealbreaking crashes with large maps, albeit I haven't run into such issue yet, and I hope never to (Maybe CE unknowingly fixed something in that regard). Xenonauts Community Edition (XCE) X-Division : 2018: (X-COM ): Xenonauts Community: Xenonauts Community: Windows: 0. I also haven't noticed quicksave/quickload to work through WINE. That's why it may be confusing :) The game you download on GOG is the official vanilla game. That said, I still have great fun running it through WINE, even if it is a little temperamental at times (some crashes, so save frequently). In the latest official updates of the game, the dev implemented some highly appreciated/very useful features from the community edition (with approval of the mod devs of course). Obviously, it is by no means GOG fault or related to GOG at all, but still a bummer, indeed, especially, that it is very hard to foresee this issue before deciding to buy (X:CE instructions mentions installing for "non windows, non steam" users, without even hinting that it will require windows version of game and WINE!). Xenonauts XCE - Insane Iron Man - Final Mission. (Vague) details in this topic from Xenonauts forum: Plot: Xenonauts is a turn-based science fiction video game developed and published as the maiden title of London-based independent game studio Goldhawk. For various strange reasons, CE offers *only* windows binary (despite fact, that linux native binary of Xenonauts work flawlessly), and there is no way to use X:CE without their provided binary. Just something to keep in mind, if you're linux-based OS user, and plan to buy Xenonauts for using with splendid "Community Edition" enhancement.

Xenonauts base attack movie#
Xenonauts base attack install#
However, there is a distinct lack of cover on some maps. This wouldn’t be too much of an issue because this does make you think about what you do before you do it. Want to run and then shoot, chances are, it’s not going to be the most accurate unless you’re nearly in some aliens grill already. Want a more accurate shot, it’s going to take more TU. This means that you have a certain number of TU to move, shoot, and crouch. Xenonauts have also stuck with the classic Time Unit method of limiting movement and shooting (TU from here on out). When one of your men go behind a building it goes transparent, but you can’t see aliens? This will probably change later in the development process, but right now it’s frustrating. While you can’t turn the camera, they haven’t implemented (if they are going to) an easy way to see through objects to target aliens behind buildings. It’s simple, traditional, good looking, and works well for the most part. I’ll just say that Xenonauts stays very close to the original formula. This is the area of the largest difference in the two games. This sets a different tone for the game and I’m not going to lie while it sets it apart from the original, I love it.
Xenonauts base attack movie#
It’s a lot heavier and reminds me of an action movie when the shooting starts or a spy/espionage film when you’ve just started the stage and are approaching the aliens positions. It was so nerve racking! Xenonauts doesn’t rack my nerves, but they add creepy, and that’s a good thing.Įnemy Unknown goes for a more modern theme.
Xenonauts base attack install#
When I originally played X-Com: Terror From the Deep, I would go out of my way to install it incorrectly so there would be no music. It’s not as creepy, though, or I may be more grown up since I was younger. The gameplay and music flow well together. It’s that eerie background music that sets up a creepy mode. Xenonauts stays closest to the X-Com music in that it tends to be on the minimalist side of things. The music, on the other hand is a major place where these games diverge. This is more impressive for Xenonauts since it’s still in a Beta-ish phase. The sound effects in both games are equally impressive. You can totally see the classic style used here, very good attention to detail! I haven’t really gotten around to naming my dudes/dudettes in this game. It’s what I’d imagine a love child between UO and an original X-Com game would look like. It’s got a more traditional look that helps me feel more comfortable with the setting and makes the transition between games a little easier to get the hang of. Xenonauts seems to rely more on the almost 2D isometric point of view than does Enemy Unknown. Xenonauts is a calmer looking game, but that’s not a bad thing. T, and Urgen Tree (that’s in memory of a bud that just left Washington, “Hey Mileson!”) From left to right you’ve got Pain Train, The Lopez, Mr. Aliens, personnel, and environments are all visually stunning.Īll my homies from my first play through. It’s not to a detriment at all, but if you were coming from the original X-Com’s to this it would be like Doom to Doom 3. Abrams lens flare Star Trek to Robert Wise’s original Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It’s obviously more graphically intensive and holds up well to today’s AAA titles. How do they compare? Let’s take a look.Įnemy Unknown has the most drastic changes visually of the two. Xenonauts, seeing nothing horribly wrong with the original formula, strives to recreate all the aspects of the original X-Com and just make it better. Enemy Unknown strives to create a familiar setting with a new shiny coating of paint as well as tweaking some of the older game to make it a bit more streamlined for a more current feeling. X-Com: Enemy Unknown and Xenonauts are trying to rekindle a fire that was lit back in the day by the original X-Com series.

The Neo-Anthropocene: Lost in Paradise
Tumblr media
A continuation of Boom and Oddly bright star
It was a hard choice, but Castel, MeiHui and Doumu have begun descent into the atmosphere of this new world. With an initial burst of fuel, they used the acceleration to safely descend, piercing the airglow. They skimmed the outer atmosphere of this world’s vast night side with an ever shrinking orbit as they timed their bursts in a rhythmic pattern, as if the heart of their determination was still beating. They all put on their MKIII Xenonaut suits in preparation for what’s to come
While they sailed across the vast blackness of this world, Meihui went to sleep while Doumu shut down to save on power, but Castel was still holding out. They looked out into the stars, in awe at the night sky, overwhelmed that they have seen things very few might ever see.     They look down to the planet, the horizon slowly illuminating with an orange glow surrounded by a blue atmosphere. Yet they can barely make out any details of the surface, except for some barely visible lights. Eventually they give in and fall asleep, no longer being able to hold out.
Hours pass and the ship finally enters the visible atmosphere, and Doumu wakes Castel and Meihui up in a panic, warning them that the ship has detected extreme turbulence, and they have found themselves in the middle of a severe rainstorm. Castel retakes control of the ship and tries to land safely. Then they hear a Boom, the high temperatures caused by updrafts and constant rainfall made a fuse in the ship midsection blow up, causing the entire vessel to go critical, they must land now. Blinded by the rainfall, they descend quickly before hovering meters above the landscape all the while getting pelted with so much stuff the window begins to crack. Eventually they land, skidding across the surface and finally stopping. They have finally landed on the mysterious planet     They all take a breather, but this time MeiHui begins to break down, they risked their lives already, why must it happen again? Doumu comes to care for their creator, and Castel joins in to return the favor after the Helios Voyager blew up. They all rest once more before they venture out into the unknown.
An hour passes, the sun emerges and peeks through the ship, gently waking up everyone. The three of them get ready to open the cockpit and venture out into the unknown. Castel pushes the glass window open and walks out. Through all their fears of what this world holds, all the haunting possibilities and bleak plausibility, none could have prepared them for what would come next.     Castel, MeiHui, and Doumu are all greeted by a vast wetland, covered in golden flora and littered with seasonal ponds, they look behind and witness a grand Congestus cloud sweep away, the same one that drenched the land and broke the ship. Massive bronze wooded trees, reminiscent of Africa’s Baobabs, stand strong and unscathed by the strong winds. Herds, packs and flocks of strange animals go on with their day. MeiHui and Doumu look for materials to repair each other while Castel looks on at the vast alien landscape. The tripartite have found themselves lost in paradise, Who knows what they might find in this strange new world.
