family christmas. || kaia.

a/n: (probably) final fic for the year, happy holidays everyone. 💕

well a year ago, who would've thought that there's a new addition to their circle, but as it reaches christmas eve, maia sits by the couch with a small bundle in her arms, atlas while kent is prepping their mini christmas tree.

“do we need more ornaments?" She asks giving somewhat of a helpful hand, as she rocks the little boy gently in her arms.

"no, I don't think so." he adds as they gaze upon the decorations, it's simple but it's theirs.

and at the sound of Kent's voice, atlas begins to coo for his daddy. The sound of it alone makes her smile, "hey, someone misses his dad."

Kent places the boxes aside and hold atlas gently, despite almost being 1 year old; he still feels the fragility and often gets nervous when he was asked to hold him. he never told anybody that, but the smile that atlas gave him was enough to calm his nerves down.

"hey kiddo." he whispers gently and rocks the little guy in his arms gently. Atlas opens his eyes gently and coos happily at the sight of his dad, making Kent smiles too. The crooked teeth of his visible to the peripheral vision, and those who know - that's when you made the kent zarneki smile.

"anyone called for uncle nick and gray, because we got presents from the north pole!" The one and only nick wiseman begins to shrike as she sighs.

"hey nick-nack." She says as she pulls nick into an embrace. "You're all early, we're supposed to meet at mom and dad's tomorrow no?"

Nick nods at the statement, "well, I'm playing Santa and I wanted to surprise my nephew. Right gray?"

The nudge nick gives to gray as he gives a polite smile pulling Maia into a hug. "Merry Christmas eve maia."

"thanks gray, forgive my brother for dragging you into his ideas." She adds with a playful smile, as gray just shrugs.

"so, where's the little guy?" Nick asks excitedly, wanting to see his nephew. he already planned in advance all the cooking lessons, and everything he wanted to teach atlas as he grows up and despite her chuckle hearing those, she wouldn't have it any other way.

And on cue, Kent steps into the room with atlas in his arms. A small smile before nick and gray coos over the child, "do you wanna hold him?"

gray shakes his head at that before nick tried to convince him, "hey, it's okay, you can do it. C'mon, hold out your arms."

And gray did as told, and atlas is safely tucked against the arms of Grayson black. "See, you can do it." Nick says in a positive light, smiling.

Kent and maia stands back and then, watches as the two of them coos over atlas.

"atlas already got everyone wrapped around his finger, he's gonna steal Christmas this year." She says with a smile, as she lays her head against his shoulder feeling his arms wrapped over her waist.

"it's his first Christmas out of many, he's gonna steal the show." He says straight to the point and there's truth in them, as she watches how gray and Nick is interacting with him, made her heart flutter with gentleness and love.

Her eyes fall onto gray and nick together, as maia looks at him. "Well, it's gonna be one hell of a Christmas party then."

Kent chuckles, the sound feels like symphony to her in agreement. It's gonna be one hella of a Christmas party tomorrow, and she can't wait.

The next day; the day of the christmas dinner.

"do we really have to wear it?" Kent asks quietly, staring at the matching sweaters that's splattered over their bed.

"it's Christmas, kenzie." Maia says softly as atlas is sleeping quietly in his baby bed.

She begins to slip into the sweaters, as Kent just watches; both intrigue and amusement.

"see, proper christmas energy." She poses and then passes him the sweater.

Kent just cocks an eyebrow his way, a protest of some sort. But, deep down he knows he'll wear it. He just likes seeing her try.

"or do you want me to put it on for you, love?" She proposes which cause him to smirk at the suggestion. He just nods, as Maia returns the gesture with a smile.

She pulls off Kent's black t-shirt off and toss it to the side, her eyes trying to not stare at his chest. But, failed anyways; which brings out a chuckle from him. Her hands slowly gesture over her chest, slightly; enjoying the view. The quietness drown over them, as the slight intimacy was captured between them. It's Christmas, she shouldn't be thinking of unholy thoughts this early morning - but, she's human. She feels his hand tips her chin upwards, as she stares into his eyes.

The smile he has can be compared to a Cheshire cat, knowing and playful. He closes the gap between them, as their lips met. Every kisses that Kent gives, it wasn't the sloppy kind. But it ranges from the feeling of melting into a puddle to the feeling of wanting to be [redacted].

Their tongues battle slightly from the kiss, until she pulls away remembering their itinerary for the day. "We have to go to my parents, love."

Kent cradles her face gently in his hold and chuckles, "I know." But neither of them move truly, and that's the thing. They can be fashionably late and they wouldn't mind.

She breaks into a chuckle at that, and puts his sweater on. "Keep the sweater on, and you might get to redeem your gift."

And that is enough for him to nod in obedience. As Maia grins at his behavior, the sound of small cries break their moment.

"our little boy has awaken, let's get him ready for his first Christmas." The words bring a new excitement, it's atlas's first Christmas with the family too.

Nick's home has become the venue for the Christmas dinner, as everyone has arrived. The place is decorated with fake snow, and a large Christmas tree with presents surrounding it. The smell of food filled the place and chatter, everyone is prepared for the festivities.

"the party has arrived!" Maia says excitedly as the family was greeted by the rest. Kent follows behind with bags of gifts ready, which they wrapped beforehand. Greetings were exchanged while atlas has been kidnapped by the Wiseman's family members.

John is holding his grandchild with a wide smile, blowing raspberries. Hope is sitting by the side, in awe at the little baby. Gray is there chatting quietly with Daphne by the corner, his arm wraps gently over Daphne's waist a subtle move. Maia notices the matching sweaters and the sight of it make her smile, a reindeer matching ones. Adorable.

Nick is still prepping the food, as she squeezes into the kitchen. Kent is talking to the phone with Ferro, who's back at his mom's home, but promises to be back by new year to celebrate it together.

"need any help, nick-nack?" She muses with a smile as she glances at the trays of food.

"ah, button. Can you help me with the dessert?"

She nods in command and helps to pour the cream on top of the cake, as it ends up spectacular. "Done, as always."

Nick returns with a smile, as he takes off his apron. "Where's the little guy?"

"no, hello and how are you my amazing little sister?"

He chuckles and then holds her hands up, "fine, so how is my amazing little sister?"

That brings a smile to her face, "she's doing good, mother duties and graduation. It's a hassle, but..I'm feeling good."

Nicholas observes her sister for a moment and then nods. The voices out there in glee chatting and catching up, as the kitchen is contrasting.

"I know..it's been a difficult year button. But, I'm always proud of you, for everything. I know I told you this a lot, and well I'll tell you until the end of time if I could. I'm happy to see you glow again." Nick says quietly, and then turns to look at her.

Maia tries to hold back her tears by groaning instead, "nick..don't make me cry on Christmas!"

He breaks into laughter, and then raises his hands up. "That's my job since you were born, button. I got the extra cookies to cheer you up, and I can pack some specially for you and Kent later if you want?"

She gives him a smile at that, and hugs him. "Thank you, nick-nack."

Nick returns the hug too, "anytime."

And they both returned back to the living room, as dinner has commence.

Kent and Maia took turns in holding Atlas as dinner begins, and fortunately, the little guy loves the attention. Everyone keeps giving atlas funny faces and love the whole day, making him feel welcome.

Maia watches for a moment as Kent holds atlas in his arms gently, making funny faces. She fell in love with him much much harder, and it's impossible not to fall in love with him at this very moment. She takes a sip of her glass of wine before taking a picture of them both together, it definitely will make it's way to the Christmas dump of the year.

"now, dessert courtesy of miss maia wiseman." Nick announced her name as all eyes on her, the cake was presented and everyone begins to dig in.

"and now..presents!" Nick says once more as everyone get their own slice.

After unwrapping it, the record holder of the most presents fall upon the main character of the dinner. Atlas himself, a variety of toys, books, clothes, and many baby stuff were given to him.

"I have a special gift for my nephew!" Nick announces excitedly as he brings a box to the pair, Kent holds atlas gently in his grasp as Maia unbox it. It's a soft kitchen set.

Maia chuckles at the sight of it, "is this early training for him to he a chef, nick-nack?"

"indeed it is, he'll grow up to be my assistant in the kitchen. A fellow family member of mine must be splendid at the kitchen." Nick smiles proudly at his own words, as Maia rolls her eyes earning a bunch of laughter in the room.

"maia is quite a cook, Nicholas." John pipes in between the conversation.

"dad..she almost destroyed my kitchen." Nick retorts as Maia hides herself behind the couch pillows, while Kent just chuckles. He remembers Maia telling him that.

"dad.. nick..don't embarrassed me on Christmas please?" She groans as the rest laughs in amusement.

"that's Christmas in the Wiseman's for you." Nick winks before pulling her into a hug.

She turns to look outside the window, snow on Christmas day. Perfect. Everyone's attention fall upon the view.

"Merry Christmas everyone." John says in enthusiasm, as Maia smiles in awe at the sight of it. Everyone else is hugging each other, she saw from the corner of her eye; gray, daphne, Sally and Kent in conversation, smiles together.

She pulls away from Nick and hugs the girls, their bond. The year comes to an end, and she's grateful for this year. The hardest but..she got everyone she needed.

They said their final goodbyes for the night, before stuffing the gifts in Kent's mustang. And they finally went home.

Baby atlas slept on the way home, as she rests her head against Kent's shoulder on the way home. The intimacy feels familiar, but this time around there's a new addition in their small family.

As they arrived, he helped her out of the car before carrying the gifts for them all. It was filled from everyone, from her mom and dad, nick, gray and daphne together, sally. but the star of the day receive the most gifts.

She carries atlas and place him in his baby cot and turns in the baby monitor before returning back to help Kent with the rest of the presents. As everything is done and dusted, the snow thankfully is not too heavy on the road. They manage to arrive safe and sound.

She plops herself against the couch of their home, and sighs. "That was a fun dinner, don't you think?"

Kent takes a seat beside her and nods, "it's quite a Christmas."

She heard the solemn tone in his words, and then takes his hand giving it a squeeze. Christmas can be hard for some families, and she hopes her family and friends can give him the comfort of a good Christmas to him.

His gaze softens at her hold, and when words failed them both. The actions speaks louder, thousand times louder; when he leans closer, his lips land against her forehead pulling her close.

"we did it, together as a family." She whispered softly and then caress his face gently. And the word family feels..new to him, a foreign concept. One where he wasn't expected to be perfect, to fit a certain narrative. And this Christmas was just that, a whole lot of love that he couldn't express properly through his words, but deep down his heart is full. She always calls him a part of her family, and her parents already accepted him as their family too. And with atlas, they're definitely a new family.

He'll try his best to keep his family protected in his own way, love and cherished. As she pulls away, they we're greeted by enthusiastic shih tzus.

"oh! I forgot my present for our little furry kiddos. Both of you girls aren't forgotten." Maia says excitedly pulling a box passing it to Kenzie.

He opens it to reveal a bunch of doggie sweaters custom made. "It will boost their petpix account! They almost reached 500 followers no?"

And that's it - the little things. As his love for her grows more and more everyday. The pups jump excitedly and licks maia's cheeks in excitement, despite not understanding of the situation. He smiles, crooked teeth and all on display for them. This is...what Christmas is all about to him, he got a new meaning to this. Something to look forward to.

"Kenzie?" She calls our for him.

His attention swift's back to her, "you alright? You seemed to be out of the loop tonight, love."

He squeezes her hands gently and kisses her knuckles. The words, when you know..you'll know hits different now. Because he knows now. But he changes the topic right away, "I kept the sweater on, what's my gift?"

Her cheeks grow red at that, and then she smiles. "Indeed you have."

She stares at the baby monitor, and atlas is sound asleep. Her enthusiasm betrays her, as she pulls his hand as they disappear to their room for the night to fulfill her promise, apparently one of their many many festivities of the day.

"merry Christmas kenzie." She whispers lovingly before her eyes begin to close, slumber land calls for her.

As he holds her close his lips hover over her forehead, everything feels perfect for their first family Christmas.

It was indeed merry.

29. things you said in the rain

Sabrina is staring forlornly at Aeon’s rain-soaked parking lot, plotting a course around the puddles that will hopefully spare the cuffs of her uniform pants, when the drizzle picks back up into a respectable shower. With a sigh, she resigns herself to braving it before it gets worse, scowling ineffectually at the mist. She hikes her bag over her head, steps outside, and feels the rain hit her face anyway.

Across the parking lot is a figure also clad in Aeon’s black uniform, though they’ve wisely accessorized with a matching umbrella rather than a haphazard backpack. Sabrina, fearing that they might turn around and catch her watching them like an envious wet cat, ducks her head and strides quickly forward. It takes only a few steps for them to call out—

“Sabrina?”

The voice is Kent’s. She turns to find him still some distance away, umbrella raised in greeting and invitation. There are enough wet strands of hair clinging to her cheeks that his offer is more mitigation than salvation, but she jogs gratefully towards him regardless.

The way he leans forward, with one foot off the curb, to catch her beneath the umbrella just a moment before she would have reached it herself shouldn’t make her feel like a romantic lead in a period drama, but it does. When she notices that the umbrella has swapped hands, and he now holds it in his left to accommodate the side she’d approached from, Sabrina feels positively wooed.

Close as the umbrella forces them, she has to tilt her head back to say, “Hey,” and see his nod in response.

“On your way home?” She asks, and beams at him, relieved, when he nods again. “Good. Thanks for the escort.”

Another nod, this one a little slower. He looks both uncertain and amused. “I wouldn’t have offered if I wasn’t planning to walk with you.”

“Sure, but I didn’t know how far the offer extended,” Sabrina says. “Maybe it was only good for the parking lot.”

“Would it have mattered, then?” Kent raises an eyebrow. “You’d still have had to walk home in the rain.”

She laughs. “Not that I’m ungrateful, but it barely matters now.” It’s hard to judge the state of her uniform with its black fabric, so she gestures to her face instead, where a tilt of her head dislodges a stray droplet that slides down her nose, and her hair is already escaping its bun in wet tangles.

Kent’s eyes follow the raindrop’s path to the corner of her mouth. He’s suppressing a grin, she thinks, but it utterly, unnaturally vanishes when he meets her eyes again. “You’re right,” he says blankly. “See you.”

He maneuvers around her to step forward. He’s kind enough to pause, holding the umbrella back so it still shields her, but it does force her to concede the point and catch up with him.

“Fine, okay, I deserved that,” she mutters, and hears him chuckle. Sabrina winds up half in front of him, to conserve umbrella space, and though she knows the way home from Aeon perfectly well, his presence at her back and to her side, just in the corner of eye, feels like he’s steering her. He matches her stride and nudges her around puddles before they reach them. Belatedly, she jokes, “I thought I clarified that I wasn’t being ungrateful.”

“You did. And you’re very welcome,” he teases, and it takes effort not to turn her head to catch a glimpse of the smile she hears so clearly. “It’s my pleasure.”

They fall into silence for the rest of the walk. A few times, Sabrina pretends to drag her feet or step awkwardly over a puddle, just to see if he’ll fall out of step with her. He never does. She’s not sure what the point of these little tests is, but she likes that he passes them, whatever that means. She has given up by the time they reach his house, where her abrupt stop is genuine.

Sabrina sees the invisible boundary of Nick’s resting brainrange like a thick red line across the pavement. If he’s as close to them as possible while still being inside his house, she can only take one more step before he’ll hear her. She doesn’t know if he’s home—but that’s not the point. Today, she wants to linger on this side not for the privacy, but for the company.

She turns to look at Kent, and reminisces on that moment in the Aeon parking lot when she’d felt like an Austen heroine. Right now, smiling at him reluctantly, she feels trapped in a teenage romance, lingering on the porch after her first date, hoping for a kiss goodnight.

God, a date? She thinks. Really, Sabrina, he only walked you home.

Kent is staring at her, brow furrowed, and she sighs.

“Right,” she says. “Well, thanks again. I know I’m already soaked, but that walk would have been miserable without an umbrella.” She takes one step out from under its shelter, bracing herself for a sprint down the block, but pauses when she doesn’t feel the rain.

She blinks. It hasn’t stopped, though it’s diminished back to a tolerable drizzle. The culprit is Kent, still holding the umbrella over her head, having stepped forward to stay beside her under its protection.

“I said I’d walk you home,” he says.

“You said you’d walk with me.” Sabrina’s voice comes slowly. “And you did. And now you can go inside, and my house is just down there.” She gestures vaguely behind her, but doesn’t point out that the rain is hardly strong enough now to warrant an umbrella, for fear that he might agree.

And he does seem to agree, nodding decisively, though only to the last part of her sentence. “Good,” he says. “So I’ll walk you.”

“Okay. Good,” she echoes, grinning in spite of herself, like she hadn’t been arguing against it.

Neither of them takes a step at first. Sabrina looks down, running the toe of her shoe along the telepathic boundary. She watches herself cross it, and waits to feel different.

But there is Kent, right at her back. She feels him step to the side and instinctively follows, glancing back down to see a small puddle where she’d nearly stood. She was so distracted by her imaginary red paint that she hadn’t noticed.

“Thanks,” she calls over her shoulder. For guiding her just now or for walking her in general or for something else entirely, she isn’t sure.

The word feels final, so Kent lets it hang until they’ve reached her doorway. This is where she’d be kissed on the cheek, if this walk had been the romantic outing she’d imagined back by his yard. Instead, he follows behind her until he’s within umbrella-range of the doorway, and she’s close enough to duck beneath it’s shelter. She’s grateful for that, too—Sabrina isn’t sure she feels sturdy enough for a romantic overture just now.

But when Kent tilts the umbrella forward at just the right angle to save her from the thin sheets of water still sliding down the doorway’s frame, she thinks her heart could stop. When she sees him wait until she’s clear to swap the handle back to his right hand, she thinks it would have been kinder if he’d kissed her in the rain.

She stops herself from saying “thank you” again, and Kent leaves with only a nod, his grin as sharp as it is gentle. Sabrina watches him go until the black umbrella fades from view, then lingers in the quiet doorway.

She smothers a giggle against the still damp fabric of her sleeve, not wanting to break the silence he left. It feels like him, and it follows her inside like something familiar and warm at her back, guiding her up the steps.

They were somewhere different, yet the routine stays the same. The smell of caffeine fills her nostrils with glee, and a camera in hand. She begins to capture everything she could including Kent who stands at the line, fiddling with his phone. The leaves surrounds her transformed into specs of golden, that's pleasing to her eyes.

It's in the chilly evening, he places the drinks on their table. He stops for a moment, positioned himself behind her pulling the jacket tighter around her at the sound of tiny shivers withun her voice, before taking a seat. Coffee in hand, as she thanks him before taking a sip.

"is this the usual?"

He nods, as a warm feeling filled her chest, as his hand found hers on the table. His hands is always cold, while hers is always warm. The science of their relationship as she passed the coffee his way - only for him to decline. He was never much of a coffee drinker, as his hand in hers become the warmth of the autumn day. And that's enough for him.

His eyes wander over the area, it's filled with unfamiliarity and people around. They weren't home at the moment, somewhere new - and that's how life has been for them, where it's just them against everything in the world. And at this moment, the coldness of autumn.

Her eyes landed over the pamphlets she collects at the airport the other day. It wasn't really a planned, and it's something they were really good at. Unplanned, spontaneous adventures was always their thing. And they have had too much of it to count, but she knows there's no one she would want to do this with other than him.

"maybe we could check out the fancy places after?"

"Or maybe we could just spend the day in the room, much warmer.." He says, with a teasing look in his eyes only to earn a playful smack from her.

"well, we need a lot more pictures of the place - and so many things to visit, and my coffee." She protested, but her smile is wider, happier or maybe it's the happiest she's ever been.

He lets out a small pout, earning a fit of laughter from her. But, it disappears in an instant as Maia captures the look on his face, she couldn't wait to share it to Ferro. He gives her a look, somehow reading her mind on what she's going to use of the picture.

"I won't do anything with it, love." She says in a quite non-chalant way. "In exchange, of a trip to the local bookshops, and a coffee."

He smiles, pulling her closer - as he kisses her cheeks. Not wanting to let go, as their gaze falls onto the people around them. People watching was also their thing, observing and predicting their stories. She takes a sip of the coffee once again, before Kent whispers his answer.

"deal." He begins to pepper the side of her face with little pecks, as Maia smiles too. The coffee forgotten, the people around them were drowned by the sound of laughter and happiness in the unfamiliarity, away from their house, but it feels very much like home.

Before he could proceed, Maia raises a finger up. "Let me finish my coffee first, and then - the adventure begins."

He nods, he knows that's her thing. And he didn't mind, they have all this time in the world after all.

NYIT Award Nominations 2019: Off-Off Broadway’s Finest Below is the list of nominations announced tonight for the 15th annual New York Innovative Theater Awards, which celebrates the best of the city’s independent theater — aka Off-Off Broadway.

BT British Urban Film Festival reveals September Schedule

Urban independent cinema arrives at the BT Tower this September as festival director Addie Akinrinade announced this year’s selections and schedule for 2017, sponsored by BT.

Akinrinade confirmed that the London premiere of Free In Deed will open this year’s film festival at the BT Tower on Wednesday the 6th of September and will feature a live Q&A with actor David Harewood who stars in the lead role as a pastor with healing powers set in an American black church.

The premiere will be hosted by Metro film editor Larushka Ivan-Zadeh.

Also to be screened at the world famous venue will be the London premiere of Chapter and Verse on Friday the 8th of September. The movie centres around a reformed gang leader from Harlem, played by Daniel Beaty, and also stars Omari Hardwick and Emmy award-winning actress Loretta Devine. Both Beaty and director Jamal Joseph (a former black panther) will feature in the Q&A.

The premiere will be hosted by Paulette Harris-German.

Akinrinade also announced that the 5th annual renewal of the Live Script Readings is to take place on Thursday the 7th of September. The readings will be hosted by actor Wil Johnson.

The festival programme will also feature the London premieres of Blue Hollywood (directed by Francesco Gabriele), hair documentary Back to Natural, and Stay Woke (a documentary from B.E.T about the Black Lives Matter movement).

On Saturday 9 September, Africa features heavily in the line-up with the documentary Black Stars of Highlife and African rom-com Potato Potahto (starring O.C Ukeje & Joselyn Dumas).

The premiere will be hosted by Capital Xtra’s Abrantee Boateng.

Other festival highlights include an acting masterclass with Ashley Walters on Monday the 11th of September.

Actress Kim Vithana features on the panel of an agents masterclass with Sandra Thompson-Quartey, Shakyra Dowling and Nina Lee on Tuesday the 12th of September.

THE BT BUFF AWARDS

The nominees for the 2017 BUFF Awards were announced by actors Sam Benjamin & Kyla Frye who will be hosting the ceremony at BT Tower on Sunday the 10th of September.

Amma Asante’s A United Kingdom picked up 3 nominations along with critically acclaimed boyhood drama To Dream plus crime thrillers The Intent & Residential.

A United Kingdom received nods for best film, best actor and best actress for director Amma Asante, David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike.

To Dream picked up nods including best film, best actor and best male emerging talent for Nicole Albarelli, Ed Hayter and Freddie Thorp.

The Intent received nods including best film, best actor and best actress for co-directors Femi Oyeniran & Kalvadour Petersen, Dylan Duffus and Jade Asha.

Residential also picked up nods for best film, best actor and best actress for director KD Pascal, Aubrey Whyte and Juanita Ingram.

Noir thriller Panic picked up 2 nods including best actor and best actress for David Gyasi and Pippa Nixon respectively.

In the best short film category, Cover Me (directed by Jo Southwell) is up against Hush (directed by Alex Campbell), Signs of Silence (directed by RM Moses) and Lifeline (directed by Sam Jones).

Cover Me is also represented in the female emerging talent category picking up a nomination for lead actress Isis Davis who goes up against Maia Watkins (Soldier), Kate Lassman Long (The Backseat) and Krystine Atti (The Tinder Problem).

In the male emerging talent category, Aubrey Whyte (Residential), Freddie Thorp (To Dream), Elijah Baker (Signs of Silence) and Louis Chandler-Joseph (Questionable Prejudice) received nominations.

10 awards will be handed out on the night including 3 script awards and the BUFF honorary award which will be presented to actor Ashley Walters. Live music comes from Ayanna Witter-Johnson and Kele Le Roc.

a/n: just an impulsive fic I written in the midst of finals but includes some family lore with kaia hihi. + Family Angst. ✨

"It's not fair." Ariadne started to say in the mirror, she stares back at her reflection. Brown hair resembles her mother, with eyes just like his father. She stares at the paper sitting on her desk, it was crumpled within her fist.

'too bad she's not a hero, only a zero.'

They were talking about heroes and apparently zeroes in class today, Apollo was sat beside her and he has been nodding excitedly despite the fact of their reality. They were born as pollard zeros, while her older siblings gotten the package. Telekinesis and pre-cognition. The world feels not fair to her, as they could hear her thoughts. Her anger being sensed and the feeling of humiliation wrapped in class.

And here she is, resenting over her own reality. The knock on her door pulled her out of the reverie, Apollo standing there with a book in hand, checking in on her as he always do.

"Are you okay there? You seem to be staring at the mirror longer than you should - which in average would be 7 seconds." He smiles back at her, only to receive a glare in return.

"where are you heading?"

"Uncle Nick's with Maria, he promised a good old dessert for me and well, Maria wants to hang out with him too, so yeah. Do you wanna join?" He asked excitedly, as she shakes her head.

"It's alright, I got my work to do. But, bring back some cookies for me. Don't tell uncle Nick." She smiles slightly back at him, before he left her sight.

The note in hand, as she finishes up her work. The worksheet staring back at her, the science of mental cognition. One of the sub-topics of the day. The memories keep on flooding in, she hates being a zero. She hates the fact that she was born, she hates the fact that she couldn't be like maria and atlas. She wants to be a hero and not a zero. The resentment within her just slowly grows, she couldn't help but blaming it to her mom. The origin zero from what the teachers said, Maia Wiseman was the first case of pollard zero in Chicago. And that's how she became one, the guilt and the resentment mixed into one.

"Ari, c'mon - lunch is served." Atlas appears by the door inviting her with a warm smile. She couldn't help but felt a rush of anger because how could her brother got the powers instead of her. She has to worked hard her whole life so far, and she wasn't the chosen one.

'its not fair.' she mumbles once again with the crumpled paper being slipped into her pocket before making way down to the dining area.

"lunch is served." Maia says as Kent joins in by her side, with Atlas and Ariadne taking a seat the opposite of them.

"the recipes were courtesy of uncle Nick of course." Atlas chips in as they begin lunch, all four of them together.

"so, Ari - how was classes today?" Maia begins the conversation as she usually does, however today Apollo wasn't present to answer it for the other twin.

She looks up to her mom, grey gentle eyes staring back at her. She just stares back at her dish, somehow sighing quietly over it.

"is everything okay there sweetie?" Maia's expression changes in a second, as Ari just nods before taking a bite of the roasted chicken.

Atlas turned towards his sister, with a concerning look as well. The three of them have their eyes on her.

"stop looking at me, I swear I'm fine." She raises hee voice a little bit, making both of the parents taken aback by the action itself.

Maia turn to look at Kent, somehow for guidance. He nods, before saying.

"You can always tell us anything, you know that." A sigh escaped her lips again, before she took out the paper from her pocket passed it to Kent himself.

'too bad she's not a hero, only a zero.'

Maia repeated quietly, with a tinge of pain within her voice. Kent holds the paper in hand, before passing it towards a curious Atlas.m who gasped in surprised.

"who wrote this Ari?" He asked, as she crosses her arms looking at him with a glare.

"some kid in class passed it to me. And apparently I'm a zero too. It's not a coincidence brother."

"You're not a zero, sis." He says trying to console his little sister but, evidently fails at it over the scoff that escape her lips.

"I am a zero, it's been written in my birth certificate maybe. Who knows, but I am a zero. And it's not fair." She begins her outbursts, as Maia tries to take her hand, trying to calm the youngest in the family. Ari pulls her hand away, earning a hurt expression from her mother.

"it's not fair, how Atlas and Maria are the ones who got powers. It's not fair that I have live through a herd of dumb kids passing notes telling me I'm never gonna be the hero, mom. And it's all because of you, you made me a zero. You made me this way, and sometimes I wished I wasn't even born." She lets out the final outbursts, as the words cut sharper than a knife ever would. The table went quiet as the audible gasp can be heard from Maia herself, even Kent looked stunned by it. Atlas himself shakes his head in disapproving over what has happened, as Ari becomes quiet.

The next few moments, goes by so slow; only for Maia to excuse herself from the table. Kent quickly following her behind, as only Atlas and Ari were seated on the table. It goes by quietly. The silence were different than the ones she's used to. Atlas sighs before taking one more bite.

Maia takes the keys in hand, and stepped out of the door. She takes a deep breath, before making her way to the car. She starts the engine, turns the music up, and sits inside quietly. Everything happened too quickly. She couldn't process it, she couldn't even comprehend it. But, she remembers all of it. Her daughter's words to not be born, and how she was blamed too.

Her thoughts wander over the past, her past. How difficult it was for her to understand, she's a zero too. How the element of her zero made herself feels like a broken fracture. She grew up feeling broken and different, and how her mother left afterwards with Nick in care. She didn't blame Hope for it, she didn't blame anyone for it except herself. Her parents wouldn't know it, they wouldn't know that she would be a zero. But, today; having her own family; she's aware of the risk. She knows there's a chance of a pollard zero in the family, and the twins unfortunately was the recievers. She felt devastated hearing it the first time, she wouldn't wish this on anyone and especially to her children too.

Her train of thought was interrupted by a knock on the window. Kent stands there with a worried expression painted over his face. She unlocks the door before he steps into the passenger seat.

He passed her a packet of sweet that's been her favorite, as she takes it with a weak smile.

"thank you."

Kent nods, as he observes her. He never took his eyes away from her, before she stares back at him.

He gestures over the tear on her face, wiping it away with his thumb. As she looks down, she tries to smile at him; and it feels like the past staring back at them. A familiar sense of deja vu occurring as his hand stays there.

"She didn't mean it, love." He says quietly, just a prediction in his head. He hopes that his words could ease the sadness that's evident on his wife's face. They've been through a lot together, and he knows this is just a tiny bump on the road.

"she said, she doesn't want to be born. No child should ever said about themselves like that. And that means..." Maia went quiet, as the tears increase in volume. She knows deep down she did this to them, and she don't want to ran away from it. She wants to be there for them, something that her mother failed to do back then.

He nods in understanding. He's never been a man with a lot of words, but she knows this is helping. An encouragement, for all those years before that he has been there for her in every little and large storm they have endure. Those storms that could be ease by squeezes of his hand. One, two...three. He takes her hand and kisses her knuckles, and stays with her as the engine rattles while time keeps on moving for them.

After the dishes are cleared, the leftovers being stored properly. Atlas and Ariadne, can be seen at the living room.

"Ari, I just wanna know why did you say that?" Atlas asked as they both sat on the opposite sides of the couch.

Arianna scoffs at the tone of his voice,

"What? I'm not wrong ain't I? Because of mom - I'm a zero. You got to flaunt your powers like uncle Nicholas, and Maria got to predict the future. What do I get? Constant humiliation from the people in school because I'm a zero just like mom." That sharp outburst still remains, somehow a tinge of guilt slowly begin to slowly eat her up at the look of Atlas's face.

Atlas winced at the response, somehow wasn't expecting the answer. He expected an apology to say the least, which results into him shaking his head, and said.

"We'll talk about this later. You really have no idea how much words hurt do you? Mom is also a zero, keep that in mind. It's not her fault we are this way. It's not my fault; I got this powers. I didn't plan that my whole life would revolve around training with these powers." He sighs, before continuing.

" If I could give these powers to you - I could, I want but this isn't how it works. This isn't how the world works, that's what unfortunate. but, if I can wish for anything; I wanted you and Apollo to have this. So you can be heroes too. I need to make a phone call, but we will talk about this again soon." Atlas rubs his face, a sigh escaping his lips before he leaves the room - leaving her alone in the room, with the words from before stamped into her mind. The guilt begins to eat her up even more, as the front door was open wide by none other than Maia herself.

She found herself staring at Maia, as she presents a weak smile her way. Her dad following behind, as he makes his way to the back probably to check on the pups, while Maia takes her seat at the opposite of herself.

She wanted to say something, to start the conversation but Maia cuts her off.

"I wanna say something first, sweetie. First of all, I'm sorry. I never asked how you feel, I never knew that has been happening to you. It's actually the same thing that happened to me too."

Her eyes widened in surprise, "You were embarrassed by idiots as well when you're younger?"

Maia chuckles in response, and nods. "It was much worst than that, but I never linger onto those memories as much as I did today than 10 years ago. But, it was hard. Being different is hard, while everyone else tells stories about working in Unity, and being an agent. I have to stood there and fight the voices in my head, and it wasn't easy."

"Why is it hard to fight it, mom?" Her eyes looking anywhere but her, as Maia continues.

"Because, grandma left. I grew up with Uncle Nick by my side through it all, and he helped me...he saved me too in one ways a person can be saved." Her eyes widen in surprise at the revelation, Grandma Hope have visited them a lot with Grandpa John. They are fun to be around, but she didn't know how tough it was back then.

"I love grandma and grandpa, but I want to be better than what they did before. I wanted to be here for you and Apollo too, both of you can put your blame on me okay? It's true, because of me you're both like this. But that doesn't mean, it changes the value of your life. I want to be here to see you grow, because you can be a hero when you're a zero also sweetheart." Maia stops, as her hands were placed on the side of her hair, pulling Ariadne into a hug.

"All of you will always going to be our heroes, no matter what others say. Remember that okay?" Maia places a kiss on her forehead, before continuing the embrace. She founds a new profound of comfort within those words as the guilt continue to succumb her, but in time she'll say something. She believes her, maybe not truly; but that's something she could grow on.

Atlas and Kent stood by the kitchen, observing the two of them. A smile can be seen on Kent's face, a proud smile to be exact as Maia and Ariadne hugged.

"Mom's very good at this, right dad?"

"She is, always is." They both perk up, as Maia makes her way to the kitchen, while Atlas went to check on his little sister parting ways at the moment.

"So, how did it go?"

"I think we'll be okay, she's her own hero after all." Maia concludes with a small smile on her face, baby steps she thought would be something familiar to her. And she'll do it, no matter what it takes.

"We got enough heroes in our lives today, we will be." He says, as they both sat quietly, staring at the raindrops outside, slowly; as Maia takes a deep breath.

There's always going to be the storm before, the calm. Or maybe the other way around, but she is lucky that the calm is in the form of the love of her life, and her family. Always.

hiii pd! thank you for sending in heh, I don't remember where the prompt post is..but I'll link it if I ever found it!! my first-ish attempt to clear the inbox, let's go do some prompts heh! also, I'm in a weird kaia brainrot...so, forgive me if there's a lot of them lately skdkd. Also, I wrote this in one sitting; apologies if they are...grammar errors dkdkd. Enjoy!

Her hands are shaking through the anxiety that's pulsating through her. It's just a test, her mental voice argues making eyes roll. It's not just a test unfortunately, it's much more. Well, in her head it's the matter of life and death. A cooking test by her own brother.

And that's what she's worried about. She's been practicing, well in other words; trying her best to not burn their house down and today is the day.

She examines the ingredients, she planned on some of Nick's favorite. Some comfort food for them both, for the sake of brownie points. She may lure him to make her dishes a pass at least.

Her confidence is ready, but let's just say; on the most important day of her life. She emphasizes on importance, Kent has a matter to attend during Nick's evaluation. He is her lucky charm, as her throat bobs at the sudden drop.

"I'll be back." He says, standing at the doorway with keys in hand. He didn't tell her where is he going, and she was too anxious to ask.

She steps forward, hands still shaky as she stops him. His confuse gaze meets hers, as a silent question filling it.

"Promise to be back soon before it's over?" She asks as she hugs herself. She's definitely nervous, for someone who tries. Kent motions his body facing her, pulling her close.

Her eyes were glued to the floor, before Kent tips her chin upwards effortlessly as if he has memorized it. She smiles in an apologetic manner, "I'm sorry, I just; you're kinda my lucky charm. And I do need you here when it happens."

She stops mumbling, as Kent lets out a breath of laughter on the tip of his tongue. Short lived but memorable to say the least.

"I promise."

"Pinky promise?"

"I'll just show you." He mumbles quietly, before pulling her close. Their lips met in the middle of the hallway, just for a few moments before he pulls away; leaving an aftermath of a doozy looking Maia. He always had that effect on her, and he likes it.

"Promise sealed." Maia replies excitedly, as Kent shakes his head in amusement.

"I'll see you soon."

"I know." That's all she said, a wide smile was painted on her face; as he leaves the house.

"miss, you've got 10 minutes left for the dishes of your life." glitch announces, as Nick stands on the side, watching with clear focus with a proud look on his face. Maia begins to decorate the dish, hoping it looks presentable as Kent suddenly appears, standing beside Grayson and Sally (which was invited by default by both Maia and Nick).

"she's doing great." Sally says excitedly, as Kent's lips perk up into a smile. At the sound of Sally's voice, Maia looks up - and their gazes meet. She gives him a thumbs up, as Glitch counts down the last 10 seconds.

"and, it's over! Step away from the dishes miss wiseman." Glitch continues, playing the role of the host as Maia follows.

Nick begins to step forward, nearing the counter. His eyes observed the dishes, every single detail, not giving anything away. The passion he has for food, always astound her. The way food become both of her and nicks love language growing up, despite the almost-fire incident years back. Food was always going to be a symbol of love for them. And she's going to prove, that she's worthy of that love as well.

Maia's gaze follows his as he grabs one of the silverware and taking a bite of the dishes. A main course and a simple desert. She felt time slows down as he takes the first bite, and it pauses. The way everyone in the room was quiet in suspense, makes her heart beats faster.

Nick wipes his mouth with a napkin in hand, before eyes meeting hers. No reaction in the beginning, only...for a smile to appear. The nick wiseman iconic smile.

"you did it, button." Three words, and the universe is back on its place. She did it, and she'll do it again.

The cheers take place, as they decided to take a taste. It wasn't as good as Nick's, but she's glad they all liked it, and she didn't burn the house down this time. Kent stood by her, hands wrapped around her waist; as her head lays on his shoulder watching the others enjoying it. She likes this feeling, and now she feels worthy of that love language.

"I have something." He says quietly, as he pulls out something from his back pocket.

A single daisy, which she swore she didn't saw it when he makes his way to her.

"this is what you're doing earlier huh?" She says in amusement quietly to him, as she twirls it in between her fingers. He just shrugs in response at her, the smile lingers on his lips for a while. Maia mouths a thank you to him as they continue to live in their little world. It's a small win, and that's one of the reasons she adores the little things in life. That's what makes it more special.
