I've been enjoying WWE 2K23 so far. Both the men's and women's MyRise stories were entertaining. GM mode is a vast improvement on 2K22. Overall, the game runs well and I'm having fun.

A few days ago, I decided I want to try and platinum the game. I've already got all the Showcase and Universe mode trophies. I had most of the MyRise ones and some of the GM mode related ones.

The one mode I hadn't touched was MyFaction as much like last year, it just feels a grind. In other modes, you might have a story play out in a different way or new challenges arise based on how you book a certain roster. As far as I can tell, MyFaction is just keep winning, just keep winning.

That said, I've only got three Faction related trophies left. One is for Loyalty, which anyone can get as long as they go into the mode for five days in any given week. One is for Live Events, special challenges that require certain criteria to be met before you can attempt them.

The third is for winning 100 Faction War matches. Each is a four on four tag. And you just have to keep winning again, and again and 97 more agains.

I'm currently at 15 out of 100 and hold little hope this particular trophy will get any more engaging as I go. Still, I only have myself to blame for this suffering.

One of my relatively new CAWS using the WWE 2K22 engine. Created mainly for the MyRise mode, starts off after being promoted from the PC as a rival of Sasha Banks the very same wrestler she was inspired by. While trying to make a name for herself she also makes enemies of veteran jobber Josie Jane. All in all, this is all to build up to her eventual main-event status to become Raw or Smackdown Women’s champion to feud with the likes of Rhonda Rousey, Charlotte Flair, Red, Brooklyn Von Braun among many other women in the main roster in my Universe Mode.

M圜areer, now called MyRise, ditches the linear story of prior years in favor of a much more open-ended one that lets you chart your own path through the WWE. M圜areer 2.0įrom a single-player perspective, the main attractions of WWE 2K22 are the career and showcase modes, with the career mode seeing the most dramatic changes.

Paybacks and Signatures have obviously been part of the series before, but being able to spend some of that same resource that governs their use on a valuable defensive move that lets you get yourself out of a bad spot is a hugely welcome addition. If you manage to fill up the whole thing you can execute your Signature move, which, if it hits, will instantly give you a finisher charge that you can use to attempt to land your strongest move. Spend two bars, and you’ll be able to use your character’s equipped one-time-use Payback special move these range from a low blow, to stealing your opponent’s finisher to use against them, to the ability to spit poison mist in your opponent’s eyes. Spend one bar, and you’ll be able to immediately get up from the mat as though wrestling was fake or something. Pressing the highest strength button, a grab, will end the combo with whatever unique move is tied to that specific combo string.Īnother fighting game influence on WWE 2K22’s wrasslin’ action is a segmented special meter that you can use for a variety of offensive and defensive techniques. WWE 2K22’s combo system uses three buttons for light, heavy, and grab, and have a progression that allows you to continue a string by pressing a button of equal or higher strength, with a maximum of four button presses in any combo. The other big change to the fundamentals of WWE 2K22’s wrestling is the overhaul of the strike/grapple system, which is much more combo focused than in previous years and also borrows a few mechanics from more traditional fighting games. At the same time I get that there are arguments for and against reversal stocks, so I wish there was at least an option to turn them on or off to let people play how they want. It can certainly be fun to trade reversals early on in a match, but it doesn’t feel like the timing window on them ever gets any tighter as the fight goes on, which makes actually ending a match against a skilled opponent exhausting because you can basically trade finisher reversals back and forth forever. They were added way back in 2K16 to eliminate the problem of matches between two experienced players devolving into a contest of who misses the most crucial reversal first. The one change that I’m a little torn on is the removal of reversal stocks, which gave each wrestler a limited number of reversals that would refill over time. Best of all, there’s now one gigantic backstage area for falls count anywhere matches and backstage brawls, complete with cars to smash each other into, high platforms to toss your opponent off of, and plenty of weapons and tables strewn all around. The combat is also enhanced thanks to much-improved camera angles that do a better job of framing the action in and outside the ring, much better character models for every wrestler, a more reactive and more varied crowd, and far more accurate commentary from Michael Cole, Corey Graves, and Byron Saxton. This is a mess that 2K needs to clean up in a hurry. Fundamental parts that felt totally fine in WWE 2K19 now feel clumsy, the impressive roster of 238 superstars is all but meaningless when a majority of them look like they crawled out of a PS2-era wrestling game, and while 2K20’s M圜areer mode offers a better wrestling story mode than most previous WWE 2K games, that’s a low bar to clear – it’s still saddled with bad progression and a plodding pace. WWE 2K19 looked like it stopped the downward trend for the series, but WWE 2K20 doubles back, breaks its ankle, and tumbles down the slope.

It’s made clear early on that this is important for the long term, as it’s the way to earn additional attribute upgrade points, which you will eventually need down the line in order to build a truly elite baller. I started off an absolute gym rat, electing to hit the court for some optional practice at every opportunity. Off days are even more intense, as you seem to always have four different time slots, all with different things to occupy your off-day should you choose to partake. On game days you’re now able to hit the gym pre-game to develop skills. Every day on the calendar now has multiple time slots in which you can take part in different activities, such as hang out with players, go to promotional events, practice, etc. Practice is now more prominent than ever. I feel like one of the biggest changes is the emphasis on building your player’s skills. The day-to-day grind of the career mode is something I’m enjoying for the most part. Converging the on and off the court action by creating story characters that you end up running pick and rolls with and dishing assists to is a really good idea it turns out. Apparently one of the writers of Creed contributed to writing this year’s story, and I feel like that pedigree shows. Jordan, recently of Creed fame, stars alongside your created player as another player on whichever team you’re drafted to. I’m not going to say this is some riveting masterpiece of a story, but it’s leaps and bounds ahead of last year’s attempt. Thankfully that particular brand of garbage is left behind for a story with a bit more sanity and some legitimate acting and storytelling. That was the worst thing to happen to the mode in… well, ever. M圜areer is the scene of the crime of last year’s dumpster fire of a story presented by Mr. This is the main attraction for myself and I’d imagine most players. The whole play before everyone else for preordering thing has always seemed a little weird to me, but here I am playing this game I was pretty sure I’d really enjoy several days early, so I guess I can’t complain.
