Recently, we have reached a point of understanding and are now quite friendly. Sometimes, however, I feel like his niceness can be just as aggressive as his former meanness.

The new episode brings back up the question, what is Cecil's full name?
Most of us assume Gershwin is his middle name, but there's always been confusion on if it's actually a hyphenated last name (Gershwin-Palmer)
On the WTNV site you can find a list of character names and how they're spelled, and it's not hyphenated there
But if you search through the scripts, it's a mixed bag
Yes, he is more often referred to as Cecil Gershwin Palmer, but it's always when he refers to himself (33, 65, 127, 182, 206)
Wheras, others always refer to him as Gershwin-Palmer. Lubelle in 225 calls him "Mr. Gershwin-Palmer" twice, Sara Iyer of the Purrrcast in 190 receives an email from "Cecil Gershwin-Palmer", and Station Management in 217 address a memo to "Cecil Gershwin-Palmer"
The only outlier is when Cecil himself is naming Khoshekh in 159 "Khoshekh Gershwin-Palmer", which is where this whole debate even started I believe
But, now with Esteban referring to Cecil's father as "Grampa Gershwin", the issue has been dug back up
Could it be because Cecil seems to not be mentally able to retain any information on his father, that he just assumes Gershwin is his middle name? Perhaps he 'accidentally' writes a hyphen on any important documents like the cat show entry forms or an inquiring email to a podcast? Or perhaps it's still up to viewer interpretation, like most of the show

(i have only heard the main podcast and im still reading the books so idk if this gets addressed elsewhere sorry) not counting the legal merging, do you think original Desert Bluffs was a Night Vale, or do you think EVERY Night Vale has a Desert Bluffs? And what about the other towns in the desert, like Red Mesa?
this is one of those things i've grappled with a lot while trying to understand wtnv's world building.
what we know is that huntokar ripped nv out of time to save it from nuclear war. this created a collapsing or black hole effect where all nvs in all timelines are either mixed, overlapped, or connected
what we also know is that nv is connected to some earth in some way that allows for 1. carlos (and the uowii) to come to town, 2. the man in the tan jacket, jackie fierro, and the craytons to move between nv and king city, 3. cecil to travel to europe, a tropical island, and the big city, 4. allow silas and mino to travel between it and the real world
night vale is simultaneously in its own pocket dimension sucking in all the other fractured night vales into a singularity AND a town with a location in the united states where people can travel (even before the events of 190)
that being said
in book 1 we learn that night vale is infectious. my assumption is that the surrounding towns were infected just like king city was and became Weird due to proximity to and inter-mingling with night vale.
(there's also much to be said about the history of nv and how it was weird even before huntokar hurt it, and how there ARE so many Weird towns all over the world. i personally love the idea that pre-1983 nv and other weird towns were all locked down by the world government to keep the rest of the world safe, but in order to keep the citizens from know they're trapped they're kept stupid about the outside world and are only permitted to interact with the other Weird towns. and then huntokars meddling just made things worse, but i digress.)
i don't think the other Weird towns are alt-timeline night vales because of how kevin and cecil function as doubles.
the a matter of blood arc gives us a clear understanding of how doubles are meant to work in terms of timeline shenanigans, and kevin and cecil don't fit that understanding. the danas were all clearly from different timelines and had to travel to the primary timeline. desert bluffs and night vale are within drive time, they're rival high school sports teams. kevin and cecil have different names! the events of the sandstorm do not perfectly parallel - vanessa and dana did not have the same experience.
whatever kevin and cecil are they aren't doubles like the danas and the kareems and the joseph finks. bulk has a lot of really good musing on them as mirrors instead of doubles, but i'll let them speak to that.
so no, i don't think db and pine cliff and red mesa and stone meadow and cactus park and the big city and king city and svitz and luftnarp and franchia and nulogorsk are alternate night vales. i think they're their own cities with their own rich lore and back stories and are interconnected with night vale by virtue of being Weird and therefore isolated and i don't think we've been told how yet

every day i think about oscar wilde. dorian gray. oscar wilde’s trial. lady windermere’s fan. the themes of classism. rqg wilde. how would he feel about modern interpretations of him? of his works? dorian gray. themes of a double life. constant deception. being driven to the brink by your own actions. lady windermere’s fan. sacrifice for another. hating yourself for doing it. the layers of lies and deception. rqg wilde. every single thing i have seen and read and heard related to him is, on some level, about deception. about masks. about blending in and pretending that nothing’s wrong. poetry about english nationalism. his mother was an irish nationalist. he didn’t have an irish accent because he was blending into society. nearly all of his work is about calling out the society he was blending into. masks and layers and constant deception. he’s most famous for being gay. he had a wife whom he wrote poems to and sent letters to a girl he called his childhood sweetheart. he’s dead and we can never be certain what was true. there are so many rumours that came about after he was prosecuted. his work was socially buried after his disgrace. he’s one of the most famous writers in the world. he was a living contradiction, masks covering masks covering masks, and we will never know if there was a person underneath it all. dorian gray. dying alone, filled with rage at what you’ve become. rqg wilde. the ballad of reading gaol. who was he? who could he have been?

wtnv 190 + mag 160 spoilers. if you have not listened to both, do not hit the read more, trust me it’s better when you’re surprised first watching.
I think the reason that I… wasn’t thrilled at wtnv 190, but I was quite thrilled at mag 160 is because of how I viewed the two podcasts. Wtnv is escapist to me, and I expect to many of you as well. It’s surrealist horror, yes, but it’s also a comedy, it’s also set in this small desert town that doubles as a surveillance state, but it’s safe, and accepting, and after the weather Cecil gives you some really good life advice.
Can I talk about Street Cleaning Day? Can I talk about how that episode made me feel, after the weather, it’s like when you’re out late and it’s humid and you’re with the people you love and you’re so connected. Connection, community. I love Night Vale for that.
Tma, on the other hand, is literally the opposite. Horror tragedy! Also all the characters hate each other! Like oh my god? They all hate each other. Lock three characters in a room together for an extended period of time and one if not all will come out crying. If you want something comforting, every ounce of happiness in this show comes also with the fact that… oh yeah! The world’s going to end! Or has already! And every bit of that sweetness is going to get ripped away.
It doesn’t make you hopeless. It just always hurts, there’s always more fresh pain, and god help you if you get extremely attached to one of the characters. Like I have. I’m so upset all the time. But, paradoxically, that makes it easier to accept when the world is going to shit! When things change beyond recognition! The world was already ruined, all the podcast does is get worse and worse, it’s not something safe, it’s something that hurts (in a good way) so if the world gets wrecked, then it’s just more of what I signed up for.
Night Vale is a different story. It’s something safe, it’s escapist, its social commentary is there, but it’s coated in a layer of humour, it’s not enough to remind you that the world you live in and the world of night vale are, in fact, fucked up.
So, in episode 190, when Night Vale was revealed… well, it destroyed that safe place. Changed it. I was worried it would change the very.. foundations of Night Vale, I knew there’d still be a radio show, and occasionally Cecil would have a bit of a Moment and we’d get more information on his monumentally fucked up childhood and present day, but how much of that small town in the desert stop? How much influence on the outside world would happen?
I’m worried it’s a turning point, like episode 160. I’m worried that Night Vale is never going to be the same.

yo!! idk if you can help me but i DESPERATELY want to catch up on wtnv but i am a million years behind (i think the last episode i listened to was review) and am overwhelmed by the amount of episodes id need to get through. is there like a list of best/most important episodes that you know of?? no worries if you dont ^_^
GOD I AM THE WORST PERSON TO ASK THIS. Its hard for me to pick and choose certain eps because alot of the big stuff that happens in nightvale extends thru mutiple eps. For the like now? I would def rec the two years following review [ eps 71 - 111 ] bc theyre some of the most important ones. And after that i would rec skimming thru the nightvale presents website bc it shows certain eps that connect to certian arcs! [ the big arcs i recommended are door ajar, a matter of blood, the birthday of lee marvin / the blood space war , the delta arc ]. After that? For the current arc thats happening in year 11, i would rec eps 188, 190, 203, 209, and 210 bc those are the eps that build up to it.
and also! HUGELY RECOMMEND episodes 171, 181, 182, and 192 as those are BIG important cecil episodes.
