The greatest match of all time.
Tumblr media
The build-up to the match was unprecedented. Omega had been steadily climbing the ranks of New Japan Pro Wrestling, and had recently formed the Bullet Club faction with fellow wrestlers Cody Hall, Bad Luck Fale, and The Young Bucks. Okada, on the other hand, was the reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion and had been on a dominant run, having successfully defended his title against numerous opponents. The clash of styles between the two wrestlers, with Omega being a high-flyer and Okada being a technical wrestler, made for an exciting matchup that fans had been eagerly anticipating.
The match itself was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The pacing of the match was masterful, with both wrestlers taking turns gaining the upper hand and delivering punishing moves to each other. The storytelling in the match was also top-notch, with Omega targeting Okada's neck to weaken him for his finisher move, the One Winged Angel. Okada, in turn, utilized his signature move, the Rainmaker, to devastating effect. The match was not just a display of athleticism and technique, but also a psychological battle between two masterful wrestlers.
Tumblr media
What makes this match truly special, however, is the sheer number of high-risk maneuvers that were executed flawlessly. Omega and Okada pushed their bodies to the limit, with Omega hitting a breathtaking moonsault off the top rope to the outside of the ring, and Okada delivering a picture-perfect dropkick from the top rope. The crowd was on the edge of their seats throughout the match, with gasps and cheers filling the arena as the two wrestlers continued to up the ante with each passing minute.
The length of the match, which lasted nearly an hour, is also a testament to the endurance and stamina of both wrestlers. They kept the audience engaged for the entire duration of the match, never allowing the pace to slow down or the excitement to wane. The crowd was fully invested in the match, with chants of "this is awesome" and "holy shit" ringing out as the two wrestlers traded blows.
Tumblr media
Finally, the aftermath of the match has cemented its status as one of the greatest professional wrestling matches of all time. Omega may not have won the match, but his performance catapulted him to superstardom and made him a household name among wrestling fans. Okada, meanwhile, continued his dominant run as the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. The match has been talked about and analyzed by fans and critics alike, with many citing it as the pinnacle of professional wrestling.
In my humble opinion, Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada is the greatest professional wrestling match to ever take place. The build-up, storytelling, athleticism, and endurance displayed by both wrestlers make it a must-watch for any wrestling fan. The match has transcended the boundaries of professional wrestling and has become a cultural phenomenon, inspiring countless fans and wrestlers alike. It will be remembered as a true masterpiece of the art form and a testament to the power of professional wrestling to captivate and inspire.

I come from a family of really WASPy elitists. We don't watch sports because it's "stupid," and "boring" but we watch some thin white woman make a beige box even more beige on HGTV. Sports was considered low brow at best, with golf being more highfalutin and acceptable for like the Masters PGA or whatever, and wrestling being for redneck idiots who married their cousins. Seriously.
But because of @21st-century-flapper I've learned a lot about wrestling, at times against my will lol, and well. There's this gif.
Tumblr media
So I changed my cable package around and last week was the first time I watched AEW. Really the first time I watched wrestling at all, when it wasn't channel surfing and us laughing "well at least WWE is on" as me and my sister in law did at my other brothers wedding, before we switched to vintage Teletoon to fall asleep to.
What I found was something that is very operatic. Opera is considered very high brow but a lot of that is because to a North American ear, a foreign language sounds exotic, especially a language like French or Italian. Even complicated operas like Der Ring des Nibelungen, which is like 4 individual Operas and is something like 18 hours long, it's incredibly simple. It's a story of love, death, betrayal, loyalty. It's basic as hell and uses familiar tropes in the form of Norse Gods. One of the 4 just tells the story of Ragnarok. It's just Norse myths. And other operas are more simple, I just like the Ring Cycle. It's the same with Shakespeare. These are simple stories meant to have mass appeal. They are the MCU of their time.
I don't know wrestling terminology. I watched AEW last week and I was kind of lost in terms and phrases. I've dropped into the middle of a lot of story lines and I don't really know what's totally going on. But these are simple stories, so just like with opera, you eventually clue in even if you don't speak the language. The costumes are ostentatious, and there is a lot of violence. These are the same reasons we watch opera, or Shakespeare (admittedly most of those have significantly less violence but that's not to say there is none. Hamlet ends up with everyone dead, the ring cycle ends with a lot of people dead. Unless it's like a 1960s big box office musical, there's a lot of death!)
But like. The themes are basically the same. Friends turn to enemies. Enemies become friends. Someone "dies" and isn't heard from for a while and then comes back. You could probably put a fued over the plot of Carmen or something and make the plot beats fit.
I'm mad that my family treated this sort of thing as whole cloth bad. Smart people didn't like this sort of thing. Smart people listened to... I don't know. Fucking HGTV lol. Like last week I was still fighting the internalized shame of it all. I had to sit in total darkness, stoned, with the tv fairly quiet lest my neighbours know. I legit watched for William Regal and I could barely hear him because I was so ashamed. Lord knows I'll struggle wearing my hoodie outside the house.
This week I'm hoping to not do that. Have my task lights on so I can craft as well. I'm probably not gonna pop an edible because I want to either crochet or work on my Hardanger for my embroidery guild. I'm mad my family framed things as "what smart people do" vs "what smart people don't do" and hinged everything on being smart. My aunt will tell you she is glad she's smart. My mother would have said the same things. But why do interests fall into that smart/not smart dichotomy?
Cross stitch is one of the easiest needle crafts. Can you count? Good you can cross stitch. Seriously. It's reproducing patterns from other artists. Not to say I don't love it and I think my work is beautiful. But it is simple compared to freehand embroidery. I think my family conflates their personal interests with "this is what smart people like" when that's not true. My aunt still believes being a nerd is marginalized. Like girl. Disney owns Star Wars now. There's like 4 Nu Treks on TV. Marvel is inescapable. You just like these things. It's ok.
This post is getting away from me and I have to go to work soon but like. Don't let other people's ideals of what you should and shouldn't be define you I guess? Be a 32 year old lady and spend $15 a month just to catch glimpses of a man old enough to be your father it's cool. It's chill.
