i don't know if there is really a community discussing eu politics on tumblr, but if there is i would like to ask whether y'all understand why hoekstra was accepted by the parlement? his political and professional history basically consists out of working against climate policy, so why did they accept him on his word that actually, no, he does really care?

as a minister and party leader in the netherlands he actively worked against our climate policies, so i am really upset he even got put forward by our idiot in charge (who's not actually in charge anymore so why was it his decision anyway?!) when better candidates with the (literal) same credentials were available, and now he gets accepted too? just makes me question the eu and their choices, but maybe i missed something?

State visit to Belgium – programme

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima will be paying a state visit to Belgium at the invitation of His Majesty the King of the Belgians. The visit will start in Brussels on the morning of Tuesday 20 June and end in Antwerp on the evening of Thursday 22 June. The King and Queen will be accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Wopke Hoekstra on the first and third days of their visit. Minister of Education, Culture and Science Robbert Dijkgraaf will accompany them on the second day. Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Liesje Schreinemacher, Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality Piet Adema, Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Mark Harbers, Minister of Defence Kajsa Ollongren, Minister of Social Affairs and Employment Karien van Gennip and Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy Micky Adriaansens will each be attending separate parts of the programme.

The state visit will reaffirm the excellent ties between the two neighbouring countries, which have strong historical, social and economic links. Key common themes during the visit will be improving social and physical liveability, combating climate change, maintaining and promoting a safe society and working towards a sustainable future in which energy is green and affordable. The visit will further deepen the close collaboration between the Netherlands and Belgium, as they both work towards a safer, cleaner and more sustainable future.

Tuesday 20 June – Brussels

Morning

Arrival at Brussels Midi train station

The state visit will begin in Brussels, with the King and Queen arriving by royal train at Brussel Midi station where they will be welcomed by the Belgian foreign minister.

Welcome ceremony

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde will receive King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at a welcome ceremony at the Royal Palace.

Afternoon

Wreath-laying ceremony

Following the welcome ceremony at the palace, the King and Queen of the Netherlands will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This monument commemorates all unidentified Belgian soldiers who fell during the First World War.

Federal Parliament

Following a lunch at the Royal Palace, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will visit the Federal Parliament of Belgium. They will speak with members of the Chamber of Representatives and the Senate before being given a tour of the building.

Meeting with the Prime Minister

The King and Queen will then meet with Prime Minister Alexander de Croo at Lambermont, his official residence.

Meeting with the mayor of Brussels and walkabout in Grand-Place

Later that afternoon both royal couples will be received by the mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, at the town hall. During a walkabout in Grand-Place square the royal party will then have the opportunity to meet inhabitants of Brussels and tourists.

Evening

State banquet

In the evening King Philippe will host a state banquet at the Castle of Laeken, at which both heads of state will give a speech.

Wednesday 21 June – Brussels, Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve, Waterloo and Charleroi

Morning

Climate Tech Forum

The second day of the visit will begin at the Climate Tech Forum, part of the parallel economic mission headed by foreign trade minister Liesje Schreinemacher. The event will be attended by some 500 representatives of Belgian and Dutch knowledge institutions, businesses and public sector bodies. They will be exchanging knowledge and exploring opportunities for cooperation on green hydrogen, climate neutral construction, future-proof agriculture and horticulture, and smart, sustainable mobility. The royal party will also visit an innovation market highlighting Belgian-Dutch collaborations and attend part of the plenary programme. King Philippe and King Willem-Alexander will each give a short speech.

Aerospacelab

King Philippe and King Willem-Alexander will visit Aerospacelab in Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve which specialises in satellite data, and in designing, testing and producing satellites. They will be given a tour, visit the cleanroom and meet members of staff.

Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel

Queen Mathilde and Queen Máxima will visit the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Waterloo. Each year the institution hosts approximately 70 international young musicians, who follow a programme of lessons, concerts and recitals, work with orchestras and participate in festivals. Queen Mathilde and Queen Máxima will meet several of the musicians, attend performances and be given a tour.

Afternoon

Lunch meeting on water management

The royal party will attend a lunch in the orangery at the Castle of Seneffe, at which Belgian and Dutch experts will give presentations on addressing the risks of drought and flooding.

BioPark Charleroi

In the afternoon the party will visit BioPark Charleroi, a biotech ecosystem where businesses and knowledge institutions conduct research on life sciences and develop solutions to challenges in healthcare.

Unveiling of comic mural and comic strip workshop

On arrival in Charleroi the royal party will walk to the Institut Saint-André school, while greeting the public. Outside the school they, and a number of pupils, will unveil a mural designed by the Dutch comic book artist Dido Drachman and Belgian graphic novel artist Christian Durieux. They will then participate in a comic strip workshop together with pupils from the school. The unveiling of the mural and the comic strip workshop will mark the end of a cultural festival involving Belgian and Dutch artists.

Evening

Concert

In the evening King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will host a concert by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta string orchestra at the Flagey culture house in Brussels to thank their hosts for their hospitality.

Thursday 22 June – Leuven and Antwerp

Morning

Imec

The third day of the state visit will begin in Leuven, where King Philippe, Queen Mathilde, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will visit Imec, a research centre specialising in chip technology that supports companies developing digital applications. The royal party will attend a roundtable meeting with the CEOs of Imec’s Belgian and Dutch partners.

Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp

King Philippe, Queen Mathilde, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will start their visit to Antwerp with a walk to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA). They will have the opportunity to meet the people of Antwerp along the way. The royal party will be given a tour of the museum, which boasts a collection representing seven centuries of art. The museum’s recent renovation was overseen by Dutch architect Dikkie Scipio. Its collection includes highlights of Flemish Baroque as well as examples of primitivism and expressionism, and features works by Peter Paul Rubens, James Ensor and Rik Wouters.

Afternoon

Lunch meeting on early school leavers and youth unemployment

After the museum tour the royal party will attend a lunch meeting on the theme of tackling youth unemployment. Many young people in Antwerp leave school without a qualification, while at the same time there are a large number of unfilled job vacancies at secondary vocational level. At the lunch young people will be sharing their experiences and speaking with researchers about the role of educational institutions and employers in guiding vulnerable young people and their development.

Port Authority Building

After the lunch meeting the royal party will be given a short tour of the Port Authority Building and will speak with CEOs and participants of the Belgian-Dutch Port Open Day being held in the Port of Antwerp. They will look at how ports and their industrial clusters can work together to achieve shared ambitions relating to the energy transition, and the infrastructure this requires.

Belgian and Dutch frigates

In the Port of Antwerp King Philippe and King Willem-Alexander will visit the Belgian frigate Louise-Marie, while Queen Mathilde and Queen Máxima visit the Dutch frigate HNLMS De Ruyter. There will be various demonstrations on board and on shore. This part of the programme will focus on the partnership between the Belgian and Dutch navies. The Royal Netherlands Navy and the Belgian Navy operate the same types of ships and helicopters, cooperate on maintenance and carry out joint exercises. Following the visit to the frigates, a farewell ceremony will be held on shore.

Reception for the Dutch community

At the end of the afternoon a reception for the Dutch community in Belgium will be held in the historic Handelsbeurs, Antwerp’s former stock exchange.

L’EUROPA SI ACCORDA SULLA RIMOZIONE DEL CARBONIO

I legislatori dell’Unione Europea hanno raggiunto un accordo per istituire il primo registro al mondo per la rimozione certificata di anidride carbonica ottenuta da pratiche di eco-agricoltura e processi industriali.

Il nuovo sistema di certificazione “preverrà il greenwashing e favorirà gli investimenti privati nella rimozione del carbonio”, ha dichiarato Lídia Pereira, portavoce del Parlamento europeo, sottolineando che questo accordo aiuterà anche a sviluppare il mercato volontario del carbonio. Il quadro normativo riguarda sia le tecnologie industriali che le pratiche naturali. Riguarda la cosiddetta agricoltura del carbonio, ovvero il ripristino delle foreste e dei suoli e la prevenzione delle emissioni nel suolo, la riumidificazione delle torbiere, l’uso più efficiente dei fertilizzanti e altre pratiche agricole innovative. Il nuovo modello si occuperà di certificare l’eliminazione industriale del carbonio e le tecniche di bioenergia e di cattura e stoccaggio temporaneo del carbonio per almeno 35 anni.

Le nuove norme introducono una serie di criteri comuni per garantire la qualità dell’assorbimento di carbonio, la trasparenza e la credibilità del processo di certificazione. “Questo creerà un importante modello di business aggiuntivo per agricoltori e silvicoltori e andrà a beneficio del clima e della biodiversità”, secondo il commissario europeo per l’azione climatica Wopke Hoekstra. I legislatori hanno aggiunto indicazioni su come devono essere intesi gli obiettivi di sostenibilità prevedendo che ogni attività di sequestro del carbonio nei suoli agricoli debba sempre generare almeno un beneficio collaterale in termini di biodiversità.

Sept. 6 (UPI) -- A Dutch city has become the first in the world to ban advertisements for meat as part of a plan to reduce greenhouse gases and fight climate change.

The city, Haarlem, banned the advertisements in public spaces in an effort to drive down meat consumption, and thereby reduce carbon emissions.

The Amsterdam suburb, which has a population of 160,000 people, said the ban will start in 2024.

The move is a response to recent studies that suggest global food production and consumption, particularly meat, accounts for about one-third of climate-warming greenhouse gases.

"We are not about what people are baking and roasting in their own kitchen; if people wanted to continue eating meat, fine," Ziggy Klazes, a councilor of the Groen Links Party and author of the legislation, said according to The Guardian.

"We can't tell people there's a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause. Of course, there are a lot of people who find the decision outrageous and patronizing, but there are also a lot of people who think it's fine."

Klazes said she would love to see similar bans across the Netherlands, including possibly a national prohibition on the advertisements.

The ban was supported by the Christian Democrats Party, despite party leader Wopke Hoekstra's siding with some farmers who are against the measure.

The legislation could face immediate legal challenges. Herman Broring, a Dutch law professor, said the ban could infringe on free speech laws.

‘It is about sending out a signal that we won’t leave Ukraine by itself,’ Hoekstra told reporters. ‘The European Commission’s proposal does justice to the situation in Ukraine and so we are going to do this.’

Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said earlier on Friday that Brussels recommended Ukraine be given candidate status. The country had done ‘good work’ although more was needed in terms of the ‘rule of law, oligarchs, human rights and tackling corruption’, she said.

The announcement came a day after the leaders of Germany, France, Italy and Romania paid a visit to Kyiv and backed Ukraine’s bid to join the EU.

Grain was also being stolen in the Kharkiv region, and 1,500 tons of grain had been taken from the village of Mala Lepetykha in the Kherson region to Crimea.

Repeated requests from Ukrainian officers and pilots for F-16 fighters seem to be able to be met, as the Dutch office studies the supply of F-16 jets to Ukraine if the Kiev government requests it.

During a parliamentary debate on Thursday, Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra said that the Cabinet would analyze such a request with an "open mind". In Davos, Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren also said that the Netherlands is willing to help pay for the modern Leopard 2 tanks that other countries send to Ukraine. “This is certainly something we are willing to do,” she told Bloomberg.

Hoekstra said that "there are no taboos" for the delivery of regular equipment. Parliamentarian Sjoerd Sjoerdsma asked the Cabinet to provide F-16s and infantry combat vehicles to the Ukrainian armed forces. Many fear that Russia will launch another major offensive in the coming months.

An F-35 from RNLAF, which is replacing the current F-16s.

The Royal Dutch Air Force is currently deactivating its fleet of F-16A/B fighters, progressively replacing them with 52 F-35A stealth fighters. Twelve Dutch F-16 fighters have already been sold to Draken International, a private company based in the United States that offers realistic training for fighter pilots.

During his speech at the Ramstein-8 meeting in Germany on January 20, President Volodymyr Zelensky asked partners to give Ukraine long-range missiles and F-16 fighters, according to Sky News. Ukraine's allies have been reluctant to supply these Western-made fighters so far.

The delivery of the F-16 would undoubtedly be subject to the approval of the United States, its manufacturing country. Although the Biden administration was initially reluctant, the U.S. House of Representatives allocated $100 million to train Ukrainian pilots to fly U.S. combat aircraft in July 2022.

According to Hoekstra, the Netherlands only sends items that Ukraine asks for. Currently, Ukraine mainly needs heavy weapons. For some time, the country has been asking for modern tanks. Poland and Finland want to send the German Leopard 2 tanks, but they need Germany's permission.

According to Zelensky, Poland, Finland, Portugal, Spain and some other countries have stated that they are ready to supply German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, but need permission for the transfer of equipment from Germany.

Berlin is hesitant. The German government is under intense pressure to allow these tanks to be sent to Ukraine. The Netherlands is willing to help pay to get the tanks in Ukraine, Ollongern said in Davos, but the delivery should take place within a European or NATO coalition.

“We are waiting for Germany’s position on this, but I am in favor of trying to find a solution and send tanks to Ukraine,” Ollongren told Bloomberg. "Every time, we show that we are able, together, to provide Ukraine with what they need."
