hemicycle // luxembourg kirchberg
architect: pierre bohler
completion: 1979
the hemicycle on the kirchberg plateau is an incredibly futuristic building that is somewhat hidden in the middle of the kirchberg forest. it looks like a film set for a dystopian film, so overgrown and lonely it stands on the road. fun fact: the european parliament, for which the building was originally built, only met four times in this building.

Get in loser, we're taxing the rich!
There's an official proposal to the EU to tax the rich!
You only need to be a EU citizen to sing it. The goal is 1 million signatures before october 2024, and we're already at 140.000!
If you need extra incentive to sign, the French have the most signatures as of right now. You wouldn't want the French to be better than you, right? And if you are French, well, Italians are second right now, you wouldn't want the Italians to catch up, right?
Please reblog so more people can see, EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT FROM THE EU!

The European Parliament voted 324-155, with 38 abstentions, to condemn the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade and demand that abortion rights be enshrined in the EU’s fundamental rights charter.
Why It Matters: The Supreme Court's decision last month to end federal protections for abortion was widely denounced by world leaders and human rights organizations.
• In the wake of the ruling, lawmakers in  Israel and France have taken steps to shore up their domestic protections for abortion.
The Big Picture: In the resolution, European MEPs expressed their solidarity with American women and girls and called for the U.S. Congress to pass federal protections for abortion, according to a European Parliament press release.
• The resolution called for EU countries to provide "safe, legal and free abortion services, pre-natal and maternal healthcare services, voluntary family planning, youth-friendly services, and HIV prevention, treatment and support, without discrimination."
What They're Saying: "The United States has clearly shown why we must use every tool available to safeguard abortion rights in the European Union,” said Stéphane Séjourné, the president of the liberal Renew Europe group in the EU Parliament, AP reported.
• “It teaches us a lesson: Women’s and girls’ human rights can never be taken for granted, and we must always fight to defend them,” Helene Fritzon, a Swedish politician who is vice president of a parliamentary alliance of Socialists and Democrats, added, per AP.

"I am not Syrian, I am not Ukrainian, I am not Yemeni, I am not Afghani. I am not from South Sudan. I am not from Israel or Palestine. I am not a politician. I am not even a pundit. But I am a witness. And having witnessed the human cost of war, violence and persecution visiting refugees from across the globe, I cannot look away. What sits at the core of my dual roles as actor and Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR is the human condition, the human story." - Cate Blanchett

i don't know if there is really a community discussing eu politics on tumblr, but if there is i would like to ask whether y'all understand why hoekstra was accepted by the parlement? his political and professional history basically consists out of working against climate policy, so why did they accept him on his word that actually, no, he does really care?
as a minister and party leader in the netherlands he actively worked against our climate policies, so i am really upset he even got put forward by our idiot in charge (who's not actually in charge anymore so why was it his decision anyway?!) when better candidates with the (literal) same credentials were available, and now he gets accepted too? just makes me question the eu and their choices, but maybe i missed something?

robert schuman building // luxembourg kirchberg
architect: laurent schmit
completion: 1973
the robert schuman building is one of the oldest eu government buildings on luxembourg's kirchberg. it housed the first eu parliament. even today, it looks timeless amidst the surrounding hypermodern glass buildings.

Roberta Metsola is president of the European Parliament. She has gone on record as favoring observer status for Ukraine and Moldova in the EU Parliament.
The EU last year designated Ukraine and Moldova as official candidate countries, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. Since then, Metsola has been clamoring for official accession negotiations to begin this year. EU leaders are due to decide whether to formally open Ukraine and Moldova’s accession talks at a summit in December, once they’ve parsed a heavily anticipated report from the European Commission providing a status update on all countries still waiting in the EU’s wings. “Make no mistake: Politically if a country looks to Europe, then Europe should fling its doors wide open,” Metsola told POLITICO in an interview in her ninth-floor office at the Parliament in Brussels.
President Metsola has been a high profile supporter Ukraine for a while.
Metsola, who at 44 is the Parliament’s youngest president ever, was the first EU leader to visit Kyiv, meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on April 1 last year; a giant photo of the pair shaking hands now hangs on the esplanade in front of the Parliament in Brussels, a visual symbol of her championing the country in its war against Russia. “Enlargement has always been the European Union’s strongest geopolitical tool,” Metsola said.
The EU needs to play a greater role regarding Ukraine, it would be advantageous for both the EU and Ukraine. A belligerent and imperialistic Russia which is headed by an unhinged dictator requires a strong counterbalance in Europe.

From the United States, the members of Women in Struggle-Mujeres en Lucha strongly reject the hostile resolution proposed by the European Union against the Republic of Cuba.
The resolution raised in the European Parliament, which deals with the agreement on EU-Cuba cooperation and political dialogue, reflects once again the imperialist interference of the state that causes most wars and political instability in the world: the United States of America.
