hmmmm... i was in a women of color group in college and we had someone sort of higher up in the university do an informal talk with our small group. she was aware that we faced a lot of challenges as woc and a phrase she used that i still use and think about to this day is "button up your light". it's this idea of protecting yourself and your goodness from people who have zero intention in understanding or listening to you. and i think the specific wording of that is so special and true. i think it's important to remember that regardless of who you are, you have this unique light that is worthy of nurturing and protecting, but there are people who won't see the light the same way you do. there are people who will take advantage of your light and there are those who have proven time and time again that they are inclined to destroy it.

as badly as we want to prove them wrong, sometimes it's perfectly okay to navigate a situation by buttoning up. not by hiding the light entirely, not by trying to change it. always let the light leak through. but really, some people deserve never being able to bask in the full light of who you are. that's entirely on them. and most importantly, that's not at all something to feel guilty about.

🐇 do you prefer writing original characters, reader inserts, or a mix of both?

ehehehe neither. if i have to choose, i do occasionally make original (side) characters, but i almost always just write existing characters that aren't my own. i don't think i've ever done a reader insert!

🦴 is there a piece of media that inspires your writing?

hmmmMm so so much over so much time. the most recent example i can think of lately, though, is the animated movie a silent voice. i prefer writing more "believable", realistic, grounded plots and i don't even necessarily think a silent voice is realistic in the way the characters interact and grow. HOWEVER i admire how deeply it portrays human emotions of grief and hope and fear and anxiety, almost in spite of what feels more realistic, expected, and normal? these ugly vignettes of extreme emotion really resonate with me and a ton of other viewers, and they encourage me to explore uglier, less grounded ideas in my own writing. it's fascinating to write a character making the most horrid decisions, almost illogically with how OOC it feels, but ultimately made logical by the fact that they're having the worst fucking time of their life.

lolll hello zoe!! ty for your curiosity! i imagine everyday life in PH can be sorta different than my life as a fil-am :>

i LOVE ube. i don't eat rice everyday but there's always cooked rice available when i'm back home. also i am unable to eat any meaty/saucy stew without rice. my parents don't really swear at me, but that's bc i'm such a good kid 😇 (and also they sorta spoil me lol)

BUT ALSO i have some info that i feel really encompasses my experiences as a fil-am. so i've recently realized that as a second gen immigrant, i feel very connected to my filipino background, which means i can be quite different from other filipinos/asian-americans my age, and i am drastically different from any white american. different as in: my values are different, the way i view family is different, the way i present myself is different... basically so much of my identity is shaped around how my parents raised me, and how their parents raised them. and "uniqueness in one's lineage" sounds like a universal experience, but with each day in any given moment, i feel like my filipino-ness comes out in little ways.

being a fil-am is getting pandesal from the bakery beside seafood city, going to church, buying cheap even when we have money, keeping dirty laundry strictly within the family. being a fil-am is having the same pinoy pride as any other filipino.

but it's also navigating white spaces and being reminded in the smallest of ways that you are not like these people, and they are not like you. it's seeing ads for "asian snack delivery boxes" while remembering the wonder/disgust from grade school classmates who saw you eat shrimp chips. it's feeling weird and sad when your friends make a big deal about your family being religious when their only experiences of religion/spirituality is white christianity. it's making sure to buy the name brand item for the party, but defaulting to the store brand option at home. it's hearing white folks talk shit about their parents and their partners and their siblings to you, and feeling like you're listening to something illegal.

like i know this probably isn’t what you were asking for but i can only imagine that in the philippines, a filipino person can just be and exist and not think about it all the time. but especially since i was quarantined with my filipino-ass parents for a year then went back to studying at a mostly-white college, nowadays being filipino is literally 👏🏼all👏🏼i👏🏼can👏🏼think👏🏼about👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
