Not dead… just gone. or Bucky is having a very bad day and meeting his soulmates turned out to be the cherry on the shit sundae that was his day. He struggles with what it all means, not daring to hope that things could just maybe work out in the end. He was just your average computer engineer, after all. Nothing like his soulmates, Iron Man and Captain America.

robot!Geralt AU:

As humans have advanced in great technological leaps, so have monsters adapted. They are larger, stronger, smarter. Too many hunters die to kill just one of them. For this, Geralt was created.

He is one model in a line of Witchers: android monster slayers. They are efficient. Repairable. After the first wave of Witchers, the onslaught of monsters dwindles to a manageable level.

Geralt is their best and finest Witcher.

Now the thing about Witcher-models is that they are not publically distributed, like other robot models. Witchers belong to the state. At the same time, they can be bought for a time or a specific task involving the defense and protection of human life. This is not how Jaskier and Geralt meet.

Jaskier is very much a world-famous rock star living it day by day, numb-drunk, high, or running from trouble he’s caused by sleeping with the wrong person. He has no interest in robots at all, actually. Living beings are his forté.

But one day he is once more in the wrong end of a conversation, and they kick him out into the streets that border the outskirts of the gated city. It is normally fine. The gates separate humans from the dangers of the wilds.

Only a great beast roars on the other side.

And Jaskier is caught in a panicking crowd because the beast does break the gate. It barrels through on huge black horns and thick muscled fur-spikes.

He is only saved by the state-sent pod chamber that’s dropped from the sky, distracting the beast. A Witcher emerges from it. And the Witcher dispatches the beast with such skill, speed and ferocity, Jaskier freezes where he stands. The only human around when the kill is done. It turns its android eyes on him and inquires for his wellbeing.

He reads the plate GRL-T1-RIVIA before it returns to its pod.

Jaskier has to see it again. A new fixation fuels him. And this is where the small loophole of renting Witcher-models comes in: for the specific task involving the defense and protection of human life. Well, Jaskier is very much a danger to his own very human life with the things he gets involved in.

So he buys Witcher-model time, but only from the model he saw that day, an easy feat to do. Witcher-models are fairly unique. They are each a product of long years of labor, and already difficult to recreate. “Geralt” (which is how he shortnames it) is maybe the most distinct android: long white hair where most have it shorn close to the scalp. Its serial plate an unusual choice—T1’s are prototypes of the T line from Morhen Towers. Its voice, too, is unusual. Low and intimidating. Humans would not like to rent it much if it wasn’t friendly.

Jaskier loves it.

The other models fascinate him too, all robots with their own histories. In a party where a man almost stabs him for ruining his brother’s marriage—no more than the usual—, he cheerfully asks Geralt many questions and receives answers that create more questions. More curious thoughts.

He learns that Geralt has its quirks, and that it has its own opinion of his poor life-choices. Sometime, maybe after the third or fourth rent-date, Jaskier begins to call him—he. He thinks of Geralt as his own face, with his own personality.

Robots, Jaskier realizes, are so much more complex than he once thought. It begins to show in his songs.
