I’ve worked for several non-profits in my life. Without a doubt I’ve had the most rewarding experiences with those organizations that helped individuals and families who make up the marginalized in our communities— the impoverished, the under-represented, the mistreated, the victims of discrimination and hatred. I’ve worked with the homeless, immigrants, and individuals with special needs.

One thing that is universally beneficial and restorative is the act of fishing. It nourishes the soul and heals it’s wounds.

For the past seven years I’ve been trying to develop an initiative that provides inner city youth of limited means a chance to experience the transformative effects that fly fishing offers. I have gradually acquired rods, reels and tackle as my budget allows. At present I’m able to accommodate two individuals at a time. Ideally, I would love to include between five to 10 participants. The idea (which isn’t uniquely mine but would be unique in my area) is to introduce young people to the sport, give them instruction and guidance in the mechanics, emphasize the importance of stewardship of our resources and our responsibility therein, and try to give them a place where they feel safe, at peace, and happy.

I realize this is sentimental and pollyannaish, but if I can help unburden even one person from the weight of the challenges they face, it would be worth it.

This is where I go to exhale and recharge. And I want to share it with those who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to experience this small slice of paradise.

Ken Tanaka of Wish4Fish is back on the water! This time fly fishing Mosquito Lagoon in Florida for Redfish.

THANK you guys for 500 subs on YouTube! They say the first 500 are the hardest. I never thought I'd reach 100! Last year I started making videos and got in contact with @wish4fish for some advice. He asked me the hardest question: "Why are you making videos?" At that moment I realized I was doing it for the wrong reasons... I stopped making videos and turned to God for advice. If He wanted me to stop I was ready. After a few months of just not caring anymore I felt like He was telling me it was ok to make videos again. Funny how that works. Now I make videos for fun and could care less about numbers. I'm just astonished to know there are people out there who check out my content and want to see more.
