Daily Dragons!! Pyrite.
I was like "You know I want to draw a Skywing" and then brain went "Well what about technically a Skywing" and I was like SURE. I think I got the posing and attitude down; the wings are probably not quite big enough but that's partially because of sketchbook limitations.

lil explanation on the Pyrite headcannon thing
mb for the fact this took me so long to actually make, got caught up in other things and my silly brain got distracted, but i will gladly explain some things about the Pyrite headcanon-theory of mine!
as a small bonus, i made a little banner of sorts for the google doc i am making on this, so yall get to look at that too. i will most likely make the document public soon enough, but dont expect anything like, tomorrow.
Tumblr media
for the actual little headcanon-theory, it mainly revolved around the fact that the written spell for the Pyrite mask feels oddly specific with the first part, but also not specific enough. mentioning that the user turns into a "female SkyWing named Pyrite" just feels too specific, and this is before the Hailstorm imprisonment. but also, the fact it mentions a name and gender and not scale color is odd to me. why does Pyrite have peach-colored scales? There arent any other SkyWings in the series as far as i know that have that similar almost yellow scale color, so it seems odd that it would be the "default."
this is mainly where my theory stemmed from, that the dragon known as Pyrite was once a real dragon, likely also someone important and/or someone who has died. since the fact that the second part of the spell was made for Hailstorm, the mask couldve had a different use before then. the wording suggests wanting to possibly turn one dragon into another, that "another" being Pyrite.
with this as my starting point, i built up the idea of General Pyrite, an important war general that had died during the War of SandWing Succession. so with this, the Pyrite mask's original goal couldve been to bring back that general from the dead. maybe it worked, maybe it didnt. id like to save more of her backstory for when i get the document completed, but thats basically my thought process so far!
also, i want to acknowledge the fact that there is so much more that could be done with Pyrite. during the brainstorming for General Pyrite, i came up with a few other ideas for possible origins of the Pyrite mask, some of which being:
*Pyrite was Chameleon's first attempt at making one of his shapes.
*Pyrite couldve originally been a tool used to spy within the Sky Kingdom, as Soar wouldve been known to be close to the Queen.
*Pyrite was simply a commoner and there were no specific dragons in mind to base the Pyrite mask off of, and by chance a random dragon that existed at some point was chosen to be the face of it.
^stemming from the theory above, this could mean that Chameleon's shapes were also enchanted with similar wording as the Pyrite mask. this means that all of the dragons Chameleon turns into couldve also been real dragons.
those are just a few things i brainstormed, there is definitely potential for a lot more, and id like to hear you guy's thoughts on this! i may end up developing some of those other theories alongside General Pyrite, though most likely not enough to make another document for.
feel free to ask me questions about anything above, id gladly answer!

Hailstorm/Pyrite was so interesting as a concept and had so much potential. I sure wish Tui didn’t gloss over it and make them get over it in like five minutes.

Wings of Fire designs #6, Pyrite.
My Pyrite design looks pretty simple overall, but it was pretty interesting to make it. I tried to lean into her being Pyrite by making her closer to gold in color, I even put the literal silhouette of it in her wings. (I also used it for the color palette shapes.) I like to think that her scales are shiny, not just like real pyrite, but like Icewings- as a sort of hint at her true identity. I love Pyrite's name. it's such a clever choice for what she's supposed to be. I suppose you could say she's like reverse pyrite, actually; Pyrite is the dragon Winter has been looking for all along and he doesn't even know it, she's gold masquerading as fool's gold.

Foeslayer's Lament
The following is an alternative retelling of the final scene from Wings of Fire: Winter Turning, based on my own feelings and thoughts while reading the book.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I vividly remember getting to this part in the book. I listened to the explanation that an animus curse was keeping Foeslayer trapped in the Diamond Trial cavern and a lightbulb went on in my head.
"Oh, the curse is probably phrased in a way to specifically target Foeslayer, and Winter has an item on him right now that can obscure a person's identity," I thought with glee, "the author deliberately set that up as a Checkov's Gun, this is so brilliant! I can't believe how well this all fits together, oh my god!"
Then that never happened. Really, the Pyrite necklace never comes up again; Winter probably still has it on him today, forgotten in his pouch thingy. It felt a bit deflating.
I thus spent the better part of the last two weeks writing and illustrating this comic because I wanted to see how that scene would play out with the Checkov's Gun triggered. I think it still largely hits the same beats as the original narrative and ends in roughly the same place.
It's very possible this is all very silly and my perception of a smoking gun in the narrative is a huge delusion. Whatever it may be though, I hope you'll find this entertaining, or at least interesting as a thought experiment.

you're telling me there's a dragon Jekyll and Hyde and no one is talking about it!?
i love Hailstorm, im only halfway through Book 7 but i would give everything for Hailstorm, the fact that he's such a....tragic character. like the torment of being an ENTIRELY different dragon. it would do numbers on her and i know it. this is existentialism incarnate. imagine being two people, but at the same time, only one. there are two sets of memories and feelings and.....man. i love you Hailstorm/Pyrite.
Tumblr media
i was also thinking of Alex G's song Mary and how the lyrics are:
"i am real and you are not."
and i feel like that's how she feels about herself, but there's no bitterness despite how conflicted the feelings are because he doesn't hate himself. in fact i think she loves herself in both of its entireties.
so anyway Hailrite [Pyrstorm?] might be my new favorite character.
also some doodles of the Jade winglet [except Moon bc i got tired im SORRY.]

the haters will get me for this but i kinda like Winter/Kinkajou. 🫶

ANOTHER human au art compilation! Here’s the first! More info about the AU and their cultures under cut ~
Groundwork:
-Abilities which stem from things inherent to dragon biology (fire, venom, frostbreath, gills, etc.) aren’t present. More traditionally supernatural gifts (mindreading, oracle, animus magic, etc.) are still present. In retrospect this makes the Nightwings completely op but shhh
-Each tribe is inspired off a mishmash frankenstein of different real-world cultures
-Dragons are an endangered species, just a hum in the background and nearly hunted to extinction. They’re hardly considered a threat, especially when most humans haven’t even seen one in their lives. Once the centre of each people’s culture and civilisation, they’re now nothing more than Bigfoot sightings or exotic pets.
Culture:
-Sandwings are the least homogeneous tribe and take inspiration from various cultures in the Indian subcontinent and Arab nations (most largely India and Palestine). Many subcultures exist within the larger Sandwing kingdom. Common identifies (not present in them all, but there will usually be at least one) include gold accented accessories, darker skin, and clothing with light, desaturated, yellow/orange tones. They’re renowned for their abundance of poison, excellent street food, musical talent, and stereotypically maliciously intelligent. Regardless of class there’s a nation wide pattern (you can find the reference for it by Qibli’s headscarf) symbolising trade routes, oasis waters and dunes. It’s a symbol of national pride (included on thorn’s dress, and ostrich’s headband/headscarf).
-Nightwings are, on the contrary, the most homogeneous tribe due to their small population. They’re based on Japan (spanning multiple eras). I like to think the Nightwings lost a lot of their culture after migrating to the volcano, for they were once the most religious tribe, worshiping the moon alongside the Icewings, which I’ll get to later on their cultural similarities. I promise it’ll make sense. By now, all their deeply religious traditions have been relegated to superstitions. It was said they were blessed by the moons, but the connection has been largely severed. Only old dresses follow the tradition of embroidering in the moons they were born under. Moonwatcher’s dress is something akin to a hand-me-down, as are her silver earrings, it’s by coincidence it lined up with her actual birthday. Moon’s family was an exception because she came from a long line of seers (or alleged seers) who have done their best to preserve a crumbling culture. Common identifiers include near pitch black clothing and skin as pale as the moon.
-Icewings have some of the largest populations, however, are surprisingly homogenous. Most sub-cultural differences are as a result of class. They’re based on Mongolia and Manchuria. Like Nightwings they are also deeply religious, maintaining their beliefs through rigorous scholarship. Hair has intrinsic religious value as a gift from your family- therefore it cannot be cut. The same goes for ear piercings and any other physical alterations to your body. IceWing jewellery as a result is very distinct because of its lack of need for an ear piercing, hooking around the back of the ear instead. Common identifies include long/braided hair, and light, cool-colored clothing suited for the cold.
-Skywings are loosely Scottish inspired, and I do not have a lot to say about the rest of the tribes. Most of their clothing have feathered accents. The peregrine is a sign of luck and wealth, with their feathers being adorned on the upper classes. Geese and chickens, being common farm animals, are found adorned on working classes. The second richest tribe, employing silver, gold, lazuli, and about any gem they can find in their clothing. Common identifies include curly orange/red hair, taller statures, feathered accents, a tartan like pattern, and clothing ranging from yellow to magenta.
-Seawings are loosely based on various Polynesian cultures, most prominently that of the Māori. The sea has an intrinsic religious value to them, with all children learning to swim, sail, and/or fish. They live off the sea’s resources, rarely consulting the surrounding land for supplies. On rare occasions albatross birds and seagulls are plucked for headdresses. These are reserved for high ranked royalty. Their clothing is loose and well adapted for the warm beach setting. Common identifiers of Seawings include ta moko like tattoos, olive skin, and clothing ranging from lime to purple.
-Rainwings are loosely based on Thai, Indonesian, and Cambodian cultures. They’re colourful and have the second largest poison reserves (bested by sandwings). Having once been a trade centred tribe, now they’re isolationist, albeit not intentionally. They have many history records, almost as detailed as that of Icewings, but the art has been lost to a changing cultural atmosphere. Once too religious, now their intrinsically religious practices are more cultural. Their clothing is similar to sandwings in the fact they cover as much of the body as convenient but remain loose and breezy. Common identifiers include bronze tan skin, vibrant pigmented clothing, and flower motifs. Nightwing villages don’t follow that guideline, they build on the ground as a tribe with a focus on hunting. I’m assuming everything in this universe is made proportional to dragons, hence why the trees are so large. This assumption is based off that specific panel of Bandit in the book six graphic novel eating a blueberry as big as his head.
-Mudwings are sooo underdeveloped in my au (following in the steps of Tui herself) but they’re based on southern Chinese and Vietnamese cultures! They live in cities akin to Chinese floating villages, Vietnamese floating markets, and Tulou (architectural style of the Chinese Hakka) made of mud bricks. They're a very agricultural based people. Many of their villages are isolated communities- their emphasis on family extending to their towns. Common identifiers include umber skin, straw conical hats, and practical clothing in shades of brown.

Your art style is like.
Very rounded/you don’t have a lot of flat shapes, and also you use a lot of stripes and spots everywhere, but I think most people do so I don’t know if that counts.
Mostly the first part. Like round but not necessarily soft, though people often put them together I don’t think you usually do. Honestly most of you art looks like I’d reach out and feel leather or scales.
Sorry if this makes no sense but I saw the post about describing art styles and drawing without them and figured I’d give describing it a y ry
Tumblr media
Here it is! Hailstorm and Pyrite for the evil style challenge. The total opposite of round and sharp! It's spiky and soft! Also since you made your piece with lineart I decided to draw mine completely lineless.
I thought that maybe doing with a soft shading would minimize the defined textures of scales on dragons? It kind of worked? Also instead of stripes and dots I gave them triangles

Reading through WT still and...man...I just feel bad for Hailstorm.
Tumblr media
This happens after Eagle, a friend of Pyrite, chewed him out and called him weird for approaching him like they're friends.
Hailstorm is such a fascinating character and it saddens me that he's only given such a brief time to really shine.
Picture this: you're Hailstorm. You're at the top of the circles, the placement that all IceWings strive for but very few actually achieve. You're the nephew of Queen Glacier and are well respected by your tribe for being a level-headed battle warrior. However, you certainly aren't a soulless monster. You care a lot about your younger siblings. You always try to be there for them. You gotta be the best big brother you can be.
Unfortunately, you're then ambushed by the SkyWing guards. You give yourself up immediately to save your younger brother's life, knowing that they'll probably kill him if you don't give yourself up willingly. You're taken into the dungeon for seemingly ever until an odd necklace is placed on you.
In a blank of an eye, you're no longer Hailstorm. You're Pyrite. You're loyal to Queen Scarlet. You're clumsy and ditzy. You are bad at just about everything. You're a socially awkward mess. You're virtually the opposite of everything that this 'Hailstorm' dragon was. Who even is he? You don't care. You don't know.
You then go about your life, living as free as can be. You have friends. You make memories. You're happy. Truly, actually happy. There are no responsibilities. No rules or regulations. No customs to abide by. No social system that crushes you and everyone you love. Everything is perfect. This is your life after all.
But, a couple other dragons come by. Only a day or so after meeting them, they take odd your necklace. Your body warps and painfully shifts around. Your scales melt away before finally...you're Hailstorm again.
But, that can't be right. You're Pyrite. You've always been her. That's who you are. That's the dragon you've been. You can't be this seemingly great and heroic IceWing. Your memories clash with one another. Everything is a blizzard of confusion and fear. Anything you say sounds completely ridiculous to anybody around you as you try to make sense of it all.
You're...scared. You just want to go home, where you're safe and everything makes sense. But, where even is home? It's the Ice Kingdom, right? But, after getting that taste of freedom, of that glorious, beautiful freedom, you yearn for it. You can't simply go back to being 'Hailstorm'. Pyrite is a part of you.
Hailstorm is just such an interesting character. Out of all of the dragons to get a winglet, I want him. I want a Hailstorm winglet so badly. I want to see his character explored. I want to see him struggle with IceWing society. I want to see how he is coping with everything.
God. The IceWing royals just can't catch a break.

peach pit
[id : a chubby skywing dragon named pyrite, who has yellowish-orange scales with a lighter yellow underbelly and dark freckles across her scales, resembling the inside of a peach. she has a crest of dark spines along the back of her neck and on the tip of her tail, antler-like horns, her body is dappled with scars, and she wears a cord around her neck like a choker. she is sitting down, facing towards the left, with her wings held open and an uncertain expression on her face. the background is a teal rectangle with inverted peach blossoms overlayed on top of it. end id]
#thinking a lawttt about how pyrite was described to be the same color as a peach a lot#the freckles as described in the id are supposed to make her look like the inside of a peach#she has scars all over her body bc she was enchanted to be really clumsy so i would imagine she would be constantly getting hurt by acciden#her feet [and other skywing feet] have a fifth toe on the back kinda like raptor claws that they use for balance and grabbing things#in winter turning the original pyrite[?] was described to have black eyes so i gave her really big pupils -#- that would probably make her eyes look black head-on#she has lil bear ears btw !! i think skywings and icewings have bear ears bc theyre smaller and wont get cold as easily . also theyre cute#i just thought the crest of spines would look cute but then i realized the resemblance to icewing spikes so i added them to the tail too#the antler horns looking like icewing reindeer horns also wasnt intentional i just wanted them to look unique -#- instead of the generic straight horns or curved i usually give skywings#i think she has quite a bit of icewing remnants left over despite the spell actually#like i would imagine her fire is weaker than the other skywings and would be a lot less hotter#she also instinctively isnt used to skywing proportions hence why shes sitting the way she is with her legs all weird and wings not closed#other than that shes rather boring and isnt very flamboyant bc i think scarlet would think she doesnt deserve it#i dont really have any other design notes everything was added last second or by complete accident gafksndkxk#I JUST REALIZED THE THUMB ON HER WING IS BACKWARDS . I WAS WONDEIRN WHY IT LOOKED WEIRD CKJFMCJXNX#whatever im not fixing it. suffer with me#🖌#wings of fire skywing#wings of fire#wings of fire pyrite#og my GODDD tumblr eated the wuality on this one real bad wtfff
