The more the time passes, the more convinced I am that a reading of Jane Eyre that omits the theme of mercy as key to the story is incomplete at best and bad at worst.

#jane eyre #i think this is at the root of all the insidious and useless darcy vs rochester comparisons #because ultimately the wrong Austen heroes do is forgivable #the effects of their sins are more or less easily reversable #such as Darcy's pride and rudeness or Wentworth's pettiness #there is mercy being served with atonement #but it isn't a radical mercy #which I think is the point in Jane Eyre #Rochester's attempted bigamy is beyond justification #it can only be understood as sourced in stupidity and immaturity rather than in true wickedness #it can also be understood as part of the way he was raised up and the sins of his own father #but cannot be justified #Rochester can only be either hated and shunned or loved and forgiven #there's no possibility of indifference #the characters that create the most unhappiness to themselves and others in this novel are those who live without mercy #and those who act with mercy the opposite #Rochester's redemption is possible because he has shown mercy to others #at least sometimes like Adele and his first years with Bertha #st John can have everything in his favor and yet his mercilessness makes him a figure of fear for Jane #Jane's deliberate choice to show mercy again and again IS essential to the story #Jane Eyre is a bildungsroman AND a romance because of it #readings that seek to turn Rochester into a complete forever villain #i.e. he is a liar and he actually tortured Bertha into madness #are ultimately readings that want a reason to reject any sort of mercy for him #by making him incapable of good and repentance

UNDERSTANDING OUR RIGHT STANDING WITH GOD

Many think righteousness equates to following the law, but this is a religious mindset. Living under the Law leads to death. If you live by the Law, the Law will require righteousness from you that you are unable to fulfill on your own, putting you in a position where you will be judged by that Law, and the Law is an unforgiving judge. But the good news is that Jesus came so that you may have life and life more abundantly.

Romans 8:3-5 tells us that God sent His only Son in the form of sinful flesh to condemn sin in the flesh, so that the righteous requirement of the Law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Matthew 5:17 tells us that Jesus did not come to abolish the Law or the prophets, He came to fulfill them.

"But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." (Romans 3:21-24, NIV)

Righteousness does not come from our good deeds; our righteousness comes from our faith in the blood of Jesus and what it bought for us -- righteousness is our right standing with God.

Jesus + nothing else = salvation.

Not Jesus + striving, or Jesus + how good we are = a religious mindset.

Does this mean that as a child of God you can live however you want then? No, it simply means we shift from obeying the law to allowing Jesus to live His life through us -- we are ;living our life through Jesus' righteousness. We are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21).

weird incomprehensible dunmeshi post of the day but I was thinking about that one comic about marcille joining a support group for ex dungeon masters and mithrun saying that it's normal for them to miss the demon despite it all since there's no love as kind as the demon's love, and I was thinking about thistle and how they were able to keep their mistrust for the demon until the very last minute, and how they could seal it for a thousand years without ever thinking about releasing it once - about how you could think the difference between thistle and marcille is that the demon learned from its mistake after thistle and ate marcille's desire to resist first thing, but also about how this isn't applicable for mithrun and yet mithrun never doubted the demon until it was too late, and about how all other masters in the meeting seemed to have been forced to let go of the demon too. About how mithrun says that he and marcille were lucky to have people who loved them enough to fill in for the demon, and about how thistle didn't have that, but their own love for delgal and their desire to protect their people were so overwhelming and all-encompassing that not even the demon could love them enough to make them forget about them? About how all they needed to be really freed of the dungeon and the demon in the end was for delgal to thank them and apologise to them and tell them they could let go. I think mithrun might be right in saying there's no love as gentle as the demon's, but probably it's also true that in the whole story there's no love as powerful as thistle's

#thistle's end makes me extremely sad #their only sin was that they loved too much #I'm not sure what exactly happened to them in the end but i hope after all they didn't die #it's unfair they're the only one punished so harshly for something everyone else has been forgiven for #though tbf i think they'd just hate it if the were alive and found out that the delgal they spoke to wasn't delgal at all #i dunno #I'm just sad about them #they just loved their family yk #i think they deserved a little happy ending #though probably the best happy ending for them was to die thinking they managed to make delgal happy in the end #idk idk

to clarify, i don't mind people telling me they're excited for an update. in fact, that's super awesome! it makes me feel fired up knowing that people are looking forward to stuff. but yeah, asking "when" or "is it cancelled" is. hm. i can only speak for myself, but i find it frustrating since i'm fairly prolific, so having someone ask "when is this going to be updated" when i'm already writing a lot really sucks! but i'm not the universal arbiter of what pisses all authors off. i have heard some authors who say they are motivated by that kind of ask.

i have done the Write For Your Audience thing in the past, and here's the secret: it sucks!! you can't make everyone happy, and you burn out soooo fast trying to pump out enough stuff to keep up with the demand, and you end up resenting both everything you write and the people for whom you write it. so yeah! don't do that. that's my number one tip to people looking to write.

and yes, i don't have carpal tunnel! wrong side of the wrist hahahha. it's all pinky-side, up and down the forearm when it gets particularly gnarly. sucks some big ass titties, let me tell you.
