Looking through the notes on the ao3 post got me kinda confused. What does ao3 spend there legal budget on? Do you know? (This isn’t supposed to be a gotcha about ao3 I like an support ao3 I’m just to tired to try and comb through their budget and figure it out) also somebody in the notes posted that if you want to actually fight against copy right to donate to archive.org not ao3 and I agree that ppl should donate archive.org epicially right now. If someone had to choose between ao3 and the archive I would say the archive is much more important…. But that isn’t what your response was about. Ur response (I think) was against the argument that u shouldn’t donate to ao3 because they aren’t actually fighting for anything/their lawyer budget is useless. That’s not true. They are fighting for stuff and from what I can tell their budget isn’t useless. Also also archive.org and ao3 have 2 very different goals and aren’t fighting for the same thing. Ao3 is specifically about transformative works and archive.org is not. I’m sure it will end up being 2 different legal battles.
The legal budget is for expenses related to legal work: Filing fees, printing, sometimes travel costs (they have sent the legal team to the Library of Congress to argue for our right to remove DRM from DVDs in order to make fanvids) (and they won), and so on. It's a very small amount.
There are no lawyer fees. All the work is donated, and it's covered in a different spot on the budget. (Lawyers have to track records of how much pro bono work they do, and report it.) If I understand it, they got about $185,000 worth of free lawyer work last year - not their whole operating budget, but that'd be a huge cost if they had to cover it instead of server maintenance!
What they actually do:
They file amicus statements in copyright cases. A lot of them.
They argue for DRM exemptions, every three years, because those have to be renewed. (After the first two times, the media companies seem to have basically given up. But we still have to re-file & argue for it every three years.)
They research cases, both in the US and around the world, that are related to fair use/fair dealing and similar copyright situations.
They provide advice to fans who are caught in copyright cases over fanworks. They stand ready to let the OTW be sued instead of individual fans, if a copyright owner files a DMCA takedown of fanfic at AO3.
They are fighting "fandom.com's" attempt to trademark the word "fandom."
They file comments with various governments about legal issues related to copyright or fanworks or both.
(Various other stuff; see links below; I am not part of the Legal Advocacy team and don't know any details beyond what they publish.)
Archive.org has a lot more money than AO3 does. It's been around longer, and it has sponsors with deep pockets - academic orgs and so on. But yeah, they're facing a tough lawsuit right now, and they need money.
If you can only donate to one this year, I'd recommend archive.org. The OTW has enough to operate and it's not facing big threats at the moment.
HOWEVER: In 2019, Archive.org had an operating budget of $36 Million. Your $10 or even $150 is not what makes the difference to them. (Not telling anyone not to donate. But don't do it if it's a hardship.) Wikimedia Foundation - the Wikipedia people - have annual operating expense of over $100 million.
The OTW's annual budget is a bit over $500,000 per year right now. The OTW operates on pennies and broken shoelaces compared to other nonprofit archives. $10 fan donations are meaningful to the OTW in a way they are not to archive.org or wikipedia.
Part of how they can do that, is that the OTW does not pay legal fees. Effectively none of the donations go toward the "Legal Advocacy" team - just a tiny amount ($2,500 to $5000) that covers ancillary expenses.
Most nonprofits don't have a team of free lawyers on tap, because most were not founded by a pack of academics and lawyers who were desperately trying to protect their community from puritans and capitalists.

Skynex Against Shaheds - Ukraine Got a New Weapon - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/skynex-against-shaheds-ukraine-got-a-new-weapon-technology-org/
Skynex Against Shaheds - Ukraine Got a New Weapon - Technology Org
Back in December 2022, Germany revealed that it will provide Ukraine with two Skynex short-range air defence systems. This was basically a response to Russia’s kamikaze drone attacks that were destroying Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. It was revealed now that the first Skynex system has been delivered to Ukraine at the end of last year.
The 35 mm Revolver Gun Mk3 cannon of the Skynex system on a truck chassis. All components of the Skynex system are mounted on HX trucks. Image credit: Rheinmetall via Wikimedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)
„Defense Express“ analysts say that this delivery was a bit unexpected, because Skynex wasn’t mentioned in the recent military aid packages. However, as said before, it was planned over a year ago. The second Skynex system should arrive in Ukraine in March. These systems are supplied by the German defence industry giant Rheinmetall and are paid for by the German government. It is estimated that the two systems will cost an astonishing 182 million euros.
It is an incredibly valuable tool though. A Skynex system includes four Revolver Gun Mk3 cannons, a CN-1 control centre, and an X-TAR3D radar all mounted on the HX truck chassis. The main advantages of this system are its mobility and ability to respond to different threats very quickly, whether it would be drones, like the Shahed-136, or even cruise missiles. With air-bursting ammunition, which basically creates an impenetrable cloud of shrapnel in the air, the Skynex guns can defeat even tiny targets at a distance of 4 km or more.
The 35 mm Revolver Gun Mk3 is, obviously, the dagger in this system, even though it would not work without the X-TAR3D target acquisition and tracking radar. These autocannons have an astonishing rate of fire of 1,000 rounds per minute. It is computer-controlled and estimates where it should fire in relation to the target position and speed in the sky.
The entire system of radars and guns is connected in a C2 network, shares data and works together to engage multiple targets at the same time. In simple terms, Shahed drones will not fly through an area protected by the Skynex systems.
The Skynex is a short-range system, armed with automatic guns – of course, it cannot defeat ballistic missiles. But such a high-tech weapon will be able to protect some sensitive areas in Ukraine that would be repeatedly attacked by Shahed drones.
Ukraine will likely position Skynex guns on the frequent routes of the drones, trying to intercept them on their way. Of course, these systems themselves may be targeted by Russia, which is why their positions will constantly change and you may not even see their pictures online.

"genuine question, does north america have geography classes? Your lack of knowledge about continents/countries is really terrifying"
No because I tried telling them that Brazil was part of the American continent and they nearly ate me alive and had the nerve to tell me I was in the wrong lmao. But I just did a quick google search and apparently that's how they teach geography in the US? I was looking at pictures and they deadass split America into two portions: South America and North America.
I just hope y'all know this is not the norm everywhere else. No wonder it's an ongoing joke literally everywhere that Americans are dumb. I personally don't share that belief but I do think your education system failed you and this confirms it.
https://(upload.(wikimedia).org/wikipedia/commons/4/45/Continentes.png
I literally pulled that picture from Wikipedia.
The US, Canada and Mexico are American countries located in the north of America.
Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, etc. Are American countries located in the center of America.
Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, etc. are American countries situated in the south of America. Brazil is also a Latin country even though they don't speak Spanish, because Portuguese also derives from Latín.

THE TSAREVICH FABERGE EGG
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Tsarevich Egg was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II for his wife, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. The Egg was created by Fabergé in 1912, the same year that the Imperial couple’s son, Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich, suffered an almost fatal attack of haemophilia at the Spala hunting lodge in Poland. The Egg exterior consists of a Lapis Lazuli base, silver, platinum and golden detailing, with the motif of the Double Headed Eagle and the Imperial Crown seen throughout the egg added by workmaster Henrik Immanuel Wigström. The interior holds a surprise, a trait that is seen in most Imperial Fabergé eggs. When opened, a double sided watercolour portrait of the Tsarevich on ivory is revealed, set against a diamond and rock crystal encrusted frame featuring the Imperial Crown, Double Headed Eagle and jewels on top of a lapis lazuli base. The Egg was acquired by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 1947, where is remains available for public viewing in a permanent display. Elon Musk Calls NPR CEO 'One of the Worst Human Beings in America,' Announces Campaign for 1st Amendment
Tumblr media
National Public Radio CEO Katherine Maher (Photo Below)
Tumblr media
NPR CEO Katherine Maher bought a NYC townhouse for $2.7M
has been thoroughly exposed as a radical in recent days as one of NPR’s veteran editors—Uri Berliner—actually told the truth and revealed that the taxpayer-sponsored “news organization” is hopelessly biased toward the progressive viewpoint. For this transgression, he was promptly suspended; he said thank you but take a hike, I’m resigning.
The highly publicized back-and-forth led inquiring minds to take a closer look at Maher’s past, and what they found out is that she’s a radical extremist who thinks the leftist narrative is more important than the actual truth and that those who don’t stick to said narrative should be silenced in the name of “progress.” She has her right to these opinions—but she doesn’t have the right to use our taxpayer money to foist them on the American public.
Maher Madness:
National Public Radio CEO Katherine Maher’s 1st Amendment Hatred Shows They Removed the Wrong Person
Longtime NPR Editor Who Exposed Their Bias Resigns, Rips 'Divisive' New CEO on the Way Out the Door
NEW: 25-Year Editor Who Exposed NPR Suspended, Radical CEO Has More Shocking Posts Surface
If you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember the famous TV commercials where entrepreneur Victor Kiam would come on the screen and say, “I liked the shaver so much, I bought the company [Remington].” Elon Musk took a similar approach; he values free speech so highly that he shelled out $44 billion in 2022 to buy social media platform Twitter (now X), in part to fight rampant big-tech censorship. He promptly canned 80 percent of the company’s workforce, reinstated accounts that had been banned, and completely overhauled the company’s free speech policies.
And he’s certainly no fan of the former CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation, Maher, who took over as NPR CEO in March:
Katherine Maher is blatantly racist and sexist – one of the worst human beings in America— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 18, 2024
Whoa! Elon, tell us how you really feel.
It was one in a number of posts he’s made since the NPR story broke. Here’s another:
This keeps getting crazier! The head of NPR hates the Constitution of the USA. https://t.co/1Xp8Pi12fs— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 17, 2024
He also posted “Defund NPR,” “NPR has become a hard left propaganda machine that tolerates no dissent,” “It’s ok for a commercial media orgs to have political bias, but not taxpayer-funded orgs!,” and more.
He’s dead right on all those—there’s no way our taxpayer dollars should be supporting extremist wackos like Maher—but it appears that Musk is going to do more than just sit back and post to X. He’s going to take action, according to his Thursday afternoon tweet:
Given the relentless attacks on free speech, I am going to fund a national signature campaign in support of the First Amendment— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 18, 2024
At this point, it’s unclear what form such an effort would take, and he has not provided more details as of this writing. But while many thought he was bluffing when he first brought up the notion of buying Twitter, Musk has proven he is capable of taking bold (and expensive) steps.
Related:
Elon Musk Calls It Like He Sees It: 'There Is Either a Red Wave This November or America Is Doomed'
Without knowing more, I nevertheless welcome his statement because the more influential people we have fighting the scourge that is Big Tech and Big Media censorship—egged on and abetted by progressives and Democrats—the better. We saw during the COVID era just how devastating censorship can be and how we can be simultaneously lied to and silenced by people who seem to pay no consequences for their trampling of the First Amendment.
Musk is 100 percent correct to call out this loon running NPR, and I hope his “national signature campaign in support of the First Amendment" has some teeth to it.

Can maths help you win at roulette?
Albert Einstein supposedly once said: “No one can win at roulette unless he steals money from the table while the croupier isn’t looking.” Although I wouldn’t normally question Einstein, this statement isn’t true. In fact, you can use Einstein’s specialist subject, physics, to help you win. Or you can find a biased wheel that makes some numbers more likely to come up. What Einstein actually meant was that there is no mathematical trick that can help you win at roulette. Each spin is an independent trial and, in the long run, the casino will win. This is different to a game such as Blackjack where the probabilities change as cards are dealt. But some believe that it is possible to exploit the way the roulette wheel, and the betting cloth, is laid out to give themselves an advantage. The idea is that you can make bets on the layout in a way that you are guaranteed to win. But is this really possible? Roulette wheel layout Like a dartboard, the layout of a roulette wheel did not come about by accident. It was carefully planned and exhibits certain properties. In fact, there are two different layouts. An American wheel and a European wheel. The two layouts are shown below. American roulette wheel layout. Wikimedia Commons European Roulette Wheel Layout. Wikimedia Commons Notice that the American wheel has two zeroes. This is important as it doubles the advantage for the casino. On a European wheel you would expect to lose, in the long run, 2.7% of any money you bet with. On an American wheel you can expect to lose 5.26% (if you are interested in the mathematics of roulette, the video at the end will show you how these odds are calculated). The numbers are arranged in a different order on each wheel but there are some similarities in the patterns. On both wheels, the red and black numbers alternate around the wheel, although if you removed the zeroes, the American wheel would have consecutive reds and blacks. The wheels are also structured so that the low numbers (1-18) and the high numbers (19-36) should alternate as much as possible. On a European wheel, this is only violated where the 5 sits next to the 10 (both low numbers). On the American wheel, there are many examples where this rule is violated. It is for this reason that the American wheel is considered not as balanced as the European wheel. Both wheels also try to distribute odd and even numbers as evenly as possible. But again there are a number of violations of this rule on both wheels. On the European wheel there are two other interesting symmetries. First, all the low red numbers and black high numbers are on one side of the zero, and the high red numbers and low black numbers are on the other side. Second, the sequence 29-7-28-12-35-3-26-0-32 contains no numbers between 13 and 24 (the second dozen). You can place a bet on the whole of the second dozen, with odds of 2-1. So, can we beat the maths? A simple search on Google will return many (possibly millions) of systems for playing (and supposedly winning) roulette. Some easy, some complicated, some well described, some not so. A system should really be a combination of a playing strategy and a money management strategy. Perhaps the best known money management strategy is the Martingale system. This system is guaranteed to win money as long as you have enough of a bankroll to double your bet after every loss and you do not hit the table limit, which you will quickly do so. https://suncity888.org/ is probably the quickest way to bankruptcy known to man. Whatever betting strategy, and money management strategy, you choose, they all suffer from the same fate. Assuming that each number on the wheel has the same probability of being selected – meaning the wheel is not biased – the maths means the casino will always win. The system may look good, and may work in the short term, but when one of the numbers comes up that you have not bet on you will lose and the casino will move towards its win expectation (2.7% or 5.26%). Some systems involve betting on many numbers, perhaps 20. In this case, you will win quite often as you are covering more than half of the numbers. But when one of the numbers does not turn up (and it will almost half the time) you lose all of the 20 bets you have made. This will often wipe out any wins to date. Any system, so far devised, can be analysed to show that there is a win expectation for the casino. The following video shows the maths.

Abrams Tanks May Have Some Problems in Ukraine - How Serious Are They? - Technology Org
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are using a bunch of different types of Western tanks. Those include German Leopard 1 and 2 tanks, British Challenger 2 and, of course, at least 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks. All of these tanks have certain peculiarities about them and crews have to be prepared for each of these types individually. However, the Abrams main battle tank may pose the most serious problems.
Ukraine absolutely needs main battle tanks. The more the better. And the more advanced the better. However, the West lived in peace for so long that the tank reserves are not that great. NATO countries don’t have that many tanks to spare actually.
On top of that, the choices of which tanks to supply need to be made in a smart way, because Ukraine does not have any experience with the Western-designed tanks, there is no servicing or ammo supply infrastructure there.

And now the Ukrainian Ground Forces have a mish-mash of tanks, which have their own peculiarities:
The Leopard 1A5 is not only the oldest in its architecture, but also has a rifled 105 mm gun. This means that it needs special ammunition, which is not common in NATO anymore.
The Leopard 2s are the most standard, but Ukraine is getting a bunch of different versions of this tank, including 2A4s, 2A5s, 2A5s (Stridsvagn 122) and 2A6s. There are differences between these versions that need to be learned in training.
The Challenger 2 is of the same era as the Leopard 2, but it uses a rifled 120 mm gun, which also required special ammunition.
Finally, the M1A1 Abrams can share ammo with the Leopard 2, but has a multi-fuel turbine engine, instead of a regular reciprocating engine with cylinders and pistons.
Abrams tanks can burn any fuel – diesel, petrol, vodka, doesn’t matter. They are powerful and resilient. However, these gas turbine engines do need a lot of care.
Forbes writes that despite the engines in the Abrams tanks costing an unbelievable amount of money, they can succumb to dust and debris if the crews don’t maintain the filters very well. This is something crews learn during long months of training, but the Ukrainian tankmen had to learn this very quickly.
If the tank filters are not cleaned every 12 hours or so, the damage can be so severe that the engine and possibly the transmission will need to be replaced. Obviously, in a battlefield that could bring the tank to a tragic ending.
How do you clean the filters? Ukrainian Abrams crews will have to rev the tank’s engine to redline twice a day to start the pulse-jet system and blow air through the filters clearing out the dust and debris.

Even with the filters being kept up to, the Arbams will cause some issues to the Ukrainian Ground Forces. These tanks use a lot of fuel and require deep maintenance, which will have to be performed in Poland. Getting them there will not be easy either, because the Abrams is rather heavy at over 62 tonnes.
However, the effectiveness of the main battle tank mostly depends on the tactics. And if the defenders of Ukraine manage to exploit the strong sides of the Abrams well, these tanks will do a lot of damage to the Russian invaders.
