                       To Become An Alchemist.
While spending time in Old Corona, Varian unfolds his story to Rapunzel of what made him love alchemy in the first place.
If this was a real episode, it will be in between The Lost Treasure of Herz Der Sone and No Time Like The Past.
Filler episode.
I tried my best to write the characters as they are in the show so please bear with me and I hope you enjoy it!
                             (Opening Sequence)
Open on Rapunzel saying goodbye to Eugene and Lance who are going to be in charge of the kingdom while Rapunzel and Pascal go to Old Corona to visit Varian.
Rapunzel: “Ok, now one more time. Can I trust you to look over the castle and my parents?”
Eugene: “ Of course you can count on us. Don’t worry, Sunshine.”
Lance: “Yeah, We got this!” Eugene glared at him.
Eugene: “That doesn’t mean you can eat all the food in the royal kitchen.”
Lance, chuckling: “ I wasn’t planning to do thaaaattt.” (Clearly he was planning it.)
Eugene wasn’t convinced : “Lance, I know you too well. And don’t pester the cook to make you dishes either.”
Lance: “Oh, come on!”
Pascal on her shoulder squeakily laughed.
Rapunzel giggled: “Alright, you two. We’re going to head off now.”
She climbed up on Fidella. “ Let’s go, Fidella.” The mare gave a firm nod before galloping off to Old Corona. Eugene and Lance watched them leave.
Eugene gave a loud clap of his hands. “Alright, Lance. We have some duties to attend to.” Noticing no response from his friend, Eugene looked to where he had been standing. Lance was already gone. To the royal kitchen.
Eugene facepalmed. “Ugh. Really?”
Rapunzel. Pascal and Fidella made it to Old Corona. Passing by the citizens who lived in the village. “Whoa, girl!” Rapunzel called, pulling Fidella into a halt when they reached Varian’s house.
Fidella stopped, letting out a neigh as she did. Rapunzel dismounted off the mare. She petted Fidella before walking over to Varian’s house. “I betcha he’s doing a new experiment, Pascal. That he’ll need an extra set of hands for.” Pascal frowned at her then hold out one of his claws.
At this, the princess chuckled. “Of course, Pascal. You did tried your hand or should I say claw at alchemy with that mood potion. How can I forget?” Pascal squeaked proudly at himself. Rapunzel got to the door and knocked it. “Varian? Varian, it’s me!”
There was a sound of something dropping followed by hurried footsteps.
Varian opened the door: “Oh! Rapunzel....hi.” He wasn’t expecting her to visit.
Rapunzel smiling: “ Hi, Varian. I wanted to check in on you.”
Varian : “ But....aren’t you supposed to be the temporarily Queen?”
Rapunzel: “Yes, but I have Eugene and Lance to fill in for me.”
Rapunzel : “ May I come in?”
Varian got out the way so Rapunzel come in his house. “Yes! Yes! Sorry, you may.”
The two walked in Varian’s lab. Rapunzel noticed something on the alchemist hand.
Rapunzel: “What happened to your hand?”
Varian looked confused then realized what she’s referring to.
Varian: “Oh, this?” He lifted his left hand which was bandaged and his good hand pointed to it. “I uh, it’s- it’s nothing.”
Rapunzel narrowed her eyes: “Varian.”
The alchemist sighed.
Varian: “ Ok, I sprained it when I fell down the stairs.”
Pascal cringes at the image.
Rapunzel : “ You got to be more careful, Varian.”
Varian: “I know, Rapunzel. I know.”
He started to rub his arm.
Varian: “ I’m a bit of a klutz.”
Rapunzel: “ How come your up and about? You should be resting that hand.”
Varian put his good hand on his hip.
Varian indignated: “ I AM resting it. It’s called not using it. I promised my dad I don’t use my hand until it heals. He told me don’t lift anything heavy. Which I won’t be doing. Heh! Don’t wanna break anything else, right?”
Rapunzel didn’t find it funny. She was worried for him. The alchemist realized this wasn’t the time to joke about this.
Varian: “ I’m not doing any experiments today, but I got to clean up my lab. It can’t wait.”
Rapunzel shared a look with Pascal.
Rapunzel: “Do you want some help?”
Varian blinked.
Varian: “What?”
Rapunzel gave a warm smile: “I want to help you. Your doing some spring cleaning to your lab, you need extra hands for it.”
Pascal squeaked.
Rapunzel: “And claws.”
Varian : “Really? You...You don’t have to.”
Rapunzel walked over to him and placed her hand on his shoulder.
Rapunzel: “I insist. We’re friends, aren’t we?”
Varian chuckled. “Yeah. We are. Thank you, Rapunzel.”
Rapunzel followed Varian to where his dad keeps the cleaning materials.
Cut to Eugene and Lance.
Eugene dragged Lance out of the royal kitchen.
Eugene: “Congratulations, Lance. You just lost privileges.”
Lance: “All I did was make a meatball catapult.”
Eugene: “ That’s the worst part! Why on earth would you do that?”
Lance: “ I wanted to create a fun way to eat them. You never liked my ideas, Eugene.”
Eugene lets go with him: “ Your ideas get you into trouble!”
Lance stands up on his feet. He nervously rubbed the back of his head.
Lance: “ Yeah. That’s true.”
Eugene sighed. “Now we cleaned up the mess, let’s get started with today’s agenda.” Eugene pulls out the scroll Rapunzel gave him.
Lance groans.
Lance: “But I’m already tired from cleaning up the kitchen.”
Cut back to Rapunzel, Pascal and Varian.
Rapunzel is sweeping the floor while Pascal helped Varian organize his flasks, beakers etc. The chameleon pick up an lab item to give to Varian and Varian, using his good hand, put it on the new shelves he got.
Varian: “Thank you too, Pascal. For helping me.”
Pascal nodded as he passed him another beaker.
Varian put it on the shelf.
Varian: “You know, this is going a lot faster than I was expecting. Normally I clean my lab with my own cleaning up alchemy balls but um....”
He paused as Pascal raised an eyebrow at him.
The alchemist let out a nervous laugh.
Varian: “Theeyyy need more work. In fact, my dad told me to not use any alchemy to clean up the lab. And I’m like, Am I’m doing this right now?”
Varian sighed.
Varian : “ Yes, Varian. You are. Which is so weird tiding the lab.....the normal way.”
Pascal jumped on him and sat on his shoulder. He patted Varian with his claw, giving a reassuring smile.
Varian smiled back.
Varian : “Aw, thanks. You know, I always wondered what it’s like to be a chameleon. To blend in with your surroundings.”
Rapunzel: “He can change to look like people.”
Varian whipped his head to Rapunzel, a very surprised/ confused expression on his face.
Varian: “Wha...Huh?!”
Rapunzel went back to sweeping. So he looked down at Pascal. Pascal squeaked, jumping off his shoulder.
Landing on the table, Pascal changed himself to look like....Varian!
The alchemist was taken aback by this.
Varian: “ Whoa! Uh....*clears throat* F-Fascinating.”
Pascal changed back to green. A smug look on his features. Then Pascal realize someone’s not here. He looked at Varian confused as he changed himself again into a raccoon.
Varian: “Where’s Ruddiger? I don’t know where he is. Might be eating apples like he always does.”
Cut to Fidella outside.
She was watching Ruddiger who was sitting by an apple tree stuffing his face with apples. The raccoon finished his whatever number of apples he was shooting for. He burped before looking at Fidella.
Ruddiger chittered his greeting to her and scampered away. The mare rolled her eyes while making a sound of an equivalent of a horse chuckle.
Cut back in Varian’s lab.
Rapunzel: “You sure have a lot of vials, Varian.”
Varian: *nervous chuckle* “Yeah, I’ve been doing a lot of experiments that I need new sets of equipment.”
Rapunzel stopped wiping the table.
Rapunzel: “Hey, Varian?....I was wondering. How did you become an alchemist?”
Varian accidentally dropped an flask, glass shatters on the floor. Pascal squeaked in surprise.
Varian: “W-What?”
He absentmindedly went to pick up the glass....using his bandaged hand.
Rapunzel : “Varian, stop!”
Varian: “Ow!”
He had jerked his hand too abruptly. Varian stand back up, clutching his hand.
Rapunzel rushes over and got up the glass off the floor with the dustpan and broom. After dumping it in the barrel, she checked on Varian.
Rapunzel: “Are you okay?”
Pascal climbed back on her shoulder. Varian hissed in pain, his eyes shut tightly.
Varian: “Still hurts.”
Opening his eyes, his mouth shakily curve into a smile.
Varian: “I-I’m o-okay.”
Rapunzel: “How about we take a break for now?”
She went to grab two chairs. Rapunzel set them in the middle of the lab.
Rapunzel: “Here. You need to sit down.”
Varian let her guide him to one of the chairs. After the alchemist took his seat, Rapunzel take her place on the other chair. The princess watched the alchemist staring down at his bandaged hand, concern plastered in her features.
Rapunzel: “Varian?”
Varian looked up from his hand.
Varian : “ Yes, Princess?”
Rapunzel: “Do you....want to tell me how you became an alchemist?”
Varian averted his gaze away from her.
Rapunzel: “ You don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
Varian : “No, it’s not that. No one has ever asked that question. So...your the first.”
Varian: “Now that we’re friends again, I feel like you need to know what made me love alchemy.”
The alchemist took a deep breath.
Varian: “Oh, boy. Here we go. The reason I became an alchemist is my mother.”
Rapunzel: “Your mom?”
Varian nodded.
Varian: “She was an alchemist herself. My dad keeps saying that I take my personality from her so I inherited most of traits from my mom. I-I barely remember her. (voice crack on remember.) She’s not....you know, gone. Dad said she has to do something really important. It sounds like a quest. Sometimes I miss her from time to time and I hope she would come back home.”
Rapunzel: “Do you still hang on to that hope?”
Varian: “ Uh-huh.” (he said it sadly.)
Varian: “ Rapunzel....remember I said I wanted to make my father proud? Well, I-Iwanted to do the same for my mother. That’s why I became an alchemist. To carry on her legacy and memory.”
Pascal squeaked an aww sound on Rapunzel’s shoulder. The princess smiled.
Rapunzel: “That’s really sweet, Varian.”
The alchemist didn’t smile back.
Varian: “Rapunzel?”
Rapunzel: “ What is it, Varian?”
Varian nervously glance at her.
Varian: “Have...Have you tried making your parents proud?”
Rapunzel was taken aback by the question. At first she thought of Gothel, but she pushed it away. She wasn’t really her mother at all. During her first day in the castle, Rapunzel tried to make a good impression to not only her parents, but her citizens of Corona.
Then she realized that her and Varian have a lot in common.
Rapunzel: “ Yes, Varian. I have. My first day back in the castle didn’t....go completely well.”
Varian: “Oh. I’m sorry to hear that.”
Varian: “Heh. I guess we have a lot of things in common. Crazy, right?”
Rapunzel chuckled.
Rapunzel: “It is. Varian, what’s your mother’s name?”
Varian’s smile faded as he tried to remember what her name is.
Varian : “Uh...um...I think it’s uh...U-Ulla? Is that what Dad said? Yeah, that’s right. Her name is Ulla.”
Rapunzel stood up from her chair and placed her hand on his shoulder.
Rapunzel: “Don’t worry, Varian, Your mother will return.”
Varian smiled at her.
Cut to Eugene and Lance.
They were in the throne room taking the citizen’s request. Well, Eugene was and Lance is holding the scroll. (Their not sitting on any of the thrones mind you.)
Lance: “ Remind me why I can’t help with this?”
Eugene: “ Because I don’t trust you with giving choices with everyone.”
Lance glared at him.
Eugene: “ Don’t give me that look. I gave you the easiest job.”
Lance deadpanned: “ I appreciate it.”
Eugene rolled his eyes.: “You’ll thank me later.”
They are almost done, surprisingly there wasn’t very much people in line. It was a rather short line. A farmer walked up to them.
Eugene: “ State your issue.”
Farmer: “ Where’s the princess?”
Eugene: “ She has to do something important in Old Corona but she’ll be back.”
Farmer: “ Me and another farmer cannot tell which sheep is whose.”
Eugene: “ Didn’t Rapunzel took care of the whole sharing the same pasture thing?”
Farmer: “ Yes. But now we still can’t tell our sheep apart.” (He said it with a hint of anger.)
Eugene sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
Eugene: “Look, buddy. I’m sorry it didn’t go the way you wanted but that doesn’t mean you can still hold a grudge to Rapunzel. In her defense, she wasn’t trained properly at the time. So I would watch my mouth if I were you unless you want an guard to kick you out.”
Farmer: “ Oh, I’m so sorry! I didn’t know.”
Eugene smiled. He tried to think of how to solve his problem.
Lance: “ Eugene? I think I have an answer.”
Eugene: “ You do? What is it?”
Lance looked at the farmer.
Lance : “ How about you label your sheep so you can tell your guys sheep apart?”
Farmer: “ That’s not a bad idea. But how I’m going to label them without harming my sheep?”
Eugene: “ Just use paint. So when you go to shave them, it doesn’t harm the sheep and the paint comes off the wool while you wash it.”
Farmer: “ Thank you so much! We’re going to try that right now!”
The farmer left the throne room.
Eugene turned to Lance.
Eugene: “ Lance, that was some good thinking there.”
Lance chuckled.
Lance: “ Why thank you.”
Eugene: “ So I guess that’s the last of them.”
Shorty: “ Noooot exactlyyy.”
Shorty came in riding on Milton the goat.
Eugene: “ Shorty, what are you dong here?”
Shorty: “ Miltonnnn hasss aa requesssttt.”
Eugene: “ It’s a goat. I think you should leave right-”
Lance: “Uh, Eugene? You might want to look at this.”
Eugene: “ What’s wrong?”
Lance: “ Rapunzel said in the scroll if Shorty comes in for the Listening to Supplications, take his request.”
Eugene: “ Are you serious?”
Lance: “ Yup. And she put in parenthesis it might be a long one.”
Eugene took the scroll from him so he can look at it for himself.
Eugene groaned.
Eugene: “ She can’t be serious!”
Lance: “ We have to do what she says.”
Eugene: “ Alright, Finneee.”
Shorty jumped off the goat. He pulled out a scroll. A very, very, very long scroll.
Eugene and Lance both exchange worried looks at each other.
Cut back in Varian’s lab.
Varian is dusting off his Flynn Rider shrine while Rapunzel cleaned more of the vials.
Varian: “ Man, my shrine has gotten pretty dusty.”
Some dust tickled his nose.
Varian: “Ah...Ah....Ahcoo!”
Rapunzel: “Bless you.”
Varian looked back at her, a sheepish grin on his face.
Varian: “ Thanks.” *nervous laugh*
They both laughed.
Varian turned his attention back to his shrine.
He went back to dusting.
*growling*
Varian placed his duster down and put his hand on his stomach.
Rapunzel: “Whoa. What was that? Did you hear that, Pascal?”
Pascal nodded, squeaking.
The princess place the vials on the holder. Rapunzel look over to Varian, who still has his back turned.
Rapunzel: “Varian?”
Varian: “Gah!”
Rapunzel: “Sorry, I didn’t  mean to startle you.”
The alchemist turned to face her with his hands behind his back.
Varian: “ Y-Yeah, Rapunzel?”
Rapunzel: “Did you hear that noise?”
Varian: “ What noise? I didn’t hear anything.” (he said it quickly.)
Rapunzel noticed how nervous he was.
Rapunzel: “Varian-”
*growling*
Varian looked down at his stomach then flashed the biggest grin at the princess.
Rapunzel giggled.
Rapunzel: “ Is that your stomach, Varian?”
Varian groaned in embarrassment.
Varian: “Mm-mmph. Sorry.”
Rapunzel: “Hey, hey. It’s ok.”
Rapunzel came over to him.
She put her hands on Varian’s shoulders.
Rapunzel: “That’s just your stomach telling you your hungry.”
Varian’s eyes downcast to the right, not looking at Rapunzel. He was still embarrassed.
Rapunzel: “Are you hungry, Varian?”
Varian winced as the hunger pangs start to claw at his belly. He finally locked his blue eyes with Rapunzel’s green eyes.
Varian:” Heh. I guess I am getting a bit peckish.”
Rapunzel took her hands off Varian.
Rapunzel: “You know what? Me too. How about you, Pascal?”
Pascal squeaked in response.
Varian glanced at the clock on the wall.
Varian: “Yeah, it’s time for lunch. Let’s go to the kitchen.”
Rapunzel: “Lead the way and uh, watch that hand.”
Varian rolled his eyes.
Varian: “I will. Don’t worry.”
They made their way into the kitchen. Varian turned to Rapunzel.
Varian: “And here’s the kitchen. Where me and my dad create the best apple pies in Corona.”
Rapunzel ‘s eyes widened in astonishment.
Rapunzel: “Really? I didn’t know that.”
Varian beamed proudly.
Varian: “ Uh-huh. I help my dad make apple pies sometimes. Their the best!”
Rapunzel: “Where is your father anyway?”
Varian: “Oh, he’s out in the field. *sighs* Wish he was here though.”
Rapunzel saw the sad expression on his face.
Rapunzel: “Varian? Is everything ok with your dad?”
Varian: “Everything’s fine, Rapunzel. Sorry, I was just my dad to make sandwiches.”
Varian’s stomach growled loudly.
Pascal laughed on Rapunzel’s shoulder but then stopped seeing her and Varian staring at him.
Varian rubbed his stomach with his good hand.
Varian: “Yeah, Pascal. That’s-That’s my stomach growling.”
Varian whispering: “This is so embarrassing!”
Rapunzel: “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about, Varian.”
Suddenly, her own stomach began to rumble. Rapunzel nervously chuckled as she tried to play it off like it’s nothing but failing miserably.
Rapunzel: “See? Nothing to be e-embarrassed about.”
Varian laughed.
Varian: “We better start making our sandwiches. But there’s one problem: I can’t use one hand to make them.”
Rapunzel: “I’ll do it, Varian. Besides, your supposed to rest your hand.”
Varian lifted up his bandaged hand to check on it. He cradled it with his other hand.
Varian: “Well, then let me show you where the ingredients are first.”
Rapunzel, Varian and Pascal sat at the dinner table in the main room eating their sandwiches save for Pascal, who ate insects that Varian had in a jar for something. The alchemist had his sandwich cut into halves because it’s hard for him eat it whole with one hand.
Rapunzel: “Hey...Varian?”
Varian: “Hmm?”
Rapunzel averted her gaze from him. “From what happened with your dad,...do you still hate me?”
Varian put his half of his sandwich down. He was surprised.
Varian: “What? Why would I hate you?”
Rapunzel: “Because I didn’t come to check on you after you told me about the amber encasing your father. I’m so sorry, it was just that the stress of taking care my kingdom was too much for me to handle. A-And I wasn’t myself, and-”
Rapunzel cut off feeling a hand on her shoulder.
She looked to see Varian by her side, an concern expression on his face. The princess didn’t hear him get up.
Varian: “Rapunzel, please calm down. It’s okay.”
Rapunzel stared at him. “Your not mad?”
Varian sighed as he looked off to the side, regret within his features.
Varian: “ At that time, I was but it was because I denied the amber wasn’t my fault. Listen, I understand you were under a lot of stress at the time. For real, this time.”
Varian looked back at her. “ Rapunzel, don’t beat yourself up over this. That was in the past, this:”
He spread his arms out to emphasize his point. “Is the future. Stop living in the past and focus on the now.”
Rapunzel was in awe by his words. So was Pascal.
Rapunzel: “Varian...that’s- that’s really wise of you.”
Varian nervously rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassed.
Varian: “Um...thanks?”
Rapunzel still feel guilty. Not a lot, just a little bit. Varian saw this and wanted to make her feel better.
Varian: “Come here, Princess. I think you need a hug.”
Rapunzel got out her seat and let Varian embrace her into the biggest hug.
Rapunzel: “Thank you, Varian.”
Varian: “Anytime, Rapunzel.”
They both pulled away.
Rapunzel: “Your like a little brother to me, Varian.”
Varian: “I-I am?”
The princess nodded, beaming.
Varian smiled: “And your like a big sister to me.”
They finished their lunch.  Rapunzel drank the last of her water.
Rapunzel: “That was good. Did you like your lunch, Pascal?”
The chameleon laid on his back patting his belly with a claw.
Rapunzel giggled. “I’m glad you liked it.”
*burp*
Rapunzel looked at Varian. ( the camera pans over to the alchemist who covered his mouth.)
Varian: “Opps. Heh, excuse me.”
The princess gave a amused look. “ That’s what you get for gobbling down your sandwich.”
Varian removed his hand from his mouth. “What can I say? I was hungry!”
Rapunzel: “Yeah, working in the lab can really work up your appetite.”
Varian: “You have a point there.”
Rapunzel: “Let’s hope you don’t get a tummyache.”
Varian gave a dramatic groan: “Oh, stop it. I’ll be fine.” (He did that sassy hand gesture as he said it.)
Rapunzel: “Uh-huh. Sure, Varian.”
Varian stuck out his tongue out in response.
They went back in Varian’s lab to finish up what’s left to clean.
Varian wipes his hand over his head. “Whew! We did it. My lab is all clean.”
Rapunzel: “Don’t forget organized.”
Varian: “Yeah, that too.”
Rapunzel glanced at the clock.
Rapunzel: “I better get back to the castle. Eugene is probably wondering when I’m coming back.”
Varian: “Really? Aw.”
Rapunzel chuckled: “Varian, you can visit me, you know.”
Varian: “I-I know. It’s just that....I enjoyed you and Pascal’s company.”
Rapunzel: “Me too, Varian. We can do this again next time.”
Varian smiled at her.
Suddenly, he remembered something. “Oh! Wait here! I uh....want to give you something.”
Varian went over to one of his shelves. He picked up a pair of goggles and raced back to her.
He tripped over his feet, but he caught himself before hitting the floor.
Rapunzel gasped: “Varian! Are you okay?”
She helped him stand up.
Varian chuckled nervously as he checked the goggles he was holding. Thankfully, their not damaged.
Varian: “Uh, I-I meant to do that.”
Rapunzel: “Are those for me?”
Varian: “ Yes, Rapunzel. Their for you.”
He handed the goggles to her.
Varian: “I decorated them specifically to go with your nature streak.”
Rapunzel and Pascal looked at the goggles. Instead of brown, it’s lavender. And on one side there’s three drawings of birds, the other side is a pink flower painted on.
Rapunzel: “Varian.....this is beautiful.”
Rapunzel: “And you know my love of birds so well!”
Varian’s good hand reached his neck. “D-Do you like it?” He stared at her hopefully.
Rapunzel: “I love it, Varian!”
She hugged a surprised Varian.
Rapunzel: “Thank you!”
Varian chuckled as she pulled away. “Your welcome, Princess.”
Varian: “I was wondering maybe one day we can do an experiment together.”
Rapunzel: Of course, Varian. I would love to.”
She didn’t bring her satchel so Rapunzel put her goggles on her head.
Varian shyly started to mess with his own goggles.
“They look pretty on you.”
Rapunzel beamed. “Thanks. Well, we better go,”
Varian followed her to the door.
Opening the door: “Thanks for stopping by.”
Rapunzel walked out the door. She turned back to him.
Rapunzel: “We had fun even though it was just cleaning.”
Varian chuckled: “Yeah, it was. Have a safe travel.”
Rapunzel: “We will. Bye, Varian.”
Varian: “Bye, Rapunzel. Bye, Pascal.”
Varian watched her leave on Fidella. He smiled to himself. Suddenly, he heard one of his breakers shattered on the floor.
Varian huffed as he closed the door.
“Ruddiger!”
(Ending Credits)
We didn’t learn anything about Varian’s mom in the show, but we got info on her in Varian and the Seven Kingdoms Au @kritterart and @banannerbread started.
