I happened to see a good chunk of the Netflix Persuasion. I can't give a complete review or analysis or whatever, but I have thoughts.
This movie has some very pretty colors. I like cool color palettes, what can I say?
There was one shot of a purple sunset where I was like, "Oh, I could live in this picture."
The aesthetic was so trendy I couldn't take it seriously. The clothes were that 2019 Little Women cottagecore vibe with lots of poorly-fitted textures and layers and colors. I laughed out loud at the Big White Text announcing LYME or BATH, because it's such a specific vibe.
I tried to detach from any notion of it as an Austen adaptation, and just enjoy it as its own movie that just happens to take place in a history-flavored fantasy world where everyone uses modern speech. Because sometimes those stories can be fun. It still didn't work.
Because it mostly just confused me. It was this weird mish-mash of genres and tones that didn't really blend together. Oil and water. It was Pinterest and Hallmark and Austen and College Humor and Instagram and Feminism and it's all felt like it came from completely different movies.
It was trying to be a sincere period drama love story and a goofy parody at the same time and it just didn't work.
Like, there were some sweet moments in it. Anne talking about poetry to Captain Benwick was rather nice.
But then you've got things like the weird octopus-sucking-my-face story Anne tells at Lady Dalrymple's. Even that could have worked okay in context, because Mr. Eliot jumps in and turns it into a metaphor about identity, which helps to cover for Anne's awkwardness and shows that he's willing to help her out. But then they keep bringing up the octopus as a sort of pet name and it's just so weird and doesn't fit with the rest of the story.
I've gotten ahead of myself so I'm going to backtrack to some specifics.
Mary Musgrove was excellent. Spot-on. I love how she's visibly younger than Anne. First adaptation I've seen that emphasizes that.
It was interesting how they emphasized the Mrs. Clay storyline. It actually sparked some interesting thoughts about the differences between the male social climbing of the sailors (shown in a positive light in Austen) and the female social climbing of the marriage-seeking ladies (shown in a more negative light).
I've never had a clearer picture of why Mrs. Clay matters so much to Mr. Elliot. Even in the book, it's a bit muddy, but it's crystal clear here. Mr. Elliot telling us his schemes straight-out did have the benefit of making the story very easy to follow.
I've got to back up again.
They completely altered the Anne/Wentworth storyline by mixing around all the plot points.
After they go to Bath, Wentworth seeks out Anne, says that they haven't had a chance to talk, and tells her how he always admired how good she was in an emergency. And this was before the staircase scene. I was extremely confused, until it hit me--this is a dream sequence! This is how Anne wants it to play out, but then she'll wake up!
But no! This actually happened! Wentworth says all this very sincerely and passionately, leading up to him declaring...that he wants to be friends. (At least there's context for "We're worse than exes--we're friends.")
It completely alters the trajectory of their relationship. Instead of jumping from the passion of hatred to the passion of love, Wentworth has gone to the other end of the pole--friendly indifference. He likes Anne and is totally okay with her marrying someone else.
I think they changed it so Mr. Elliot could be a serious contender in the love triangle. Wentworth has let her go--can she find happiness with someone else? I'll admit it's an interesting change, even if it's not Persuasion.
But it also seems like they're trying to make Wentworth a Suitable Love Interest for the Twitter Generation. Wentworth gets weirdly bristly with Mr. Elliot. Then Wentworth apologizes because Anne is a strong woman who doesn't need his protection. He tells her she should have been able to be an admiral. He's being mature and letting go of his resentment and wishing her well and showing that he doesn't like Regency Gender Roles. It's like they're shaving away his character growth in favor of a bland Nontoxic Relationship (TM).
But then Anne likes Mr. Elliot because he's bad? He openly talks about how he's trying to wreck her father's relationship to get the title. He insults her family. And she likes it.
This version of Anne holds her family in contempt. She doesn't like them or how they treat her and she openly disdains it. So she connects with Mr. Elliot. But the book Anne seems sad for her family--she doesn't like their behavior because she wishes they could be better people. She has compassion while movie Anne is resentful.
Persuasion is all about restraint. This movie is all about lack of restraint. People speak bluntly and say what they think and openly insult people. It's a completely different culture from the usual Austen movie, because it's modern culture. Which emphasizes how little we value good manners and restraint.
It's also weird how in changing the story, they also turn it into a generic rom-com. There's a more blatant love triangle between the good boy and the bad boy. Wentworth is starting to fall in love with Anne, but he's got an opportunity to advance his career, and he has to decide within a few days, oh no! It's textbook romcom plot points.
There was another point that I'll probably think of later.
EDIT: Oh, I just remembered! I think it was that the movie was so interested in the vibes and emotions of each individual scene that it didn't bother to try to stitch them together in a coherent whole.
The ending kiss looked 1000% like the cover of a cheap romance novel.
And the final moral of "don't let anyone tell you how to live your life" feels so simplistic and selfish and weird.
Overall, I'm not angry. I'm just confused. It's not the type of movie to arouse any kind of emotion other than "Huh???" And maybe a bit of regret that they couldn't have done better things with the interesting bits.

The reason why Kimetsu no Yaiba (KnY) is so well received by the Japanese (as such a remarkable phenomenon)
Tumblr media
Written by Vũ trụ 一19九
Translated by Meownie
Proofread by Alice
Tumblr media
Everyone knows that just in a short time, KnY has almost occupied the spotlight in all fields, everyone talks about it, the number of sale in goods and comics is enormous, both of them are sold out, etc.
Following my own curiosity with this phenomenon, as well as my existent love for the original work of Kimetsu no Yaiba (the manga), I dug into this issue because, in Japan, every trend has its own root.
Taking aside all the numbers of sale or whatever, which have been analyzed by a lot of people, as I’m not a data person, I will look into the content, the storyline and the core of this phenomenon in reference to many sources and comments about KnY coming from people in this country.
Many of you say that KnY is only at an average level compared to the manga/anime general standard. Then let me tell you what the extraordinariness that an ordinary series can do.
Apparently, there are always conflicting opinions, the Japanese community is no exception. However, the pro-KnY still grows bigger and there is no sign of softening. And here are some positive comments for the success of this series.
Tumblr media
1. The anime is excellent in graphics, sound effects, the plot details are neatly arranged, easy to understand and heart touching
Cannot ignore the fact that the anime has built up the KnY’s success. Ufotable made the anime so excellent, especially in terms of visual and sound. It makes the story more approachable and the audience more empathetic to it.
The anime is a contribution to KnY’s greatest success. But many seem to be mistaken that only thanks to the anime did KnY succeed like that?
If the anime succeeds, viewers will be more interested and curious about the main storyline, so they will try to read the original manga. But if the manga was a trashy series, they could stop buying/reading it and just wait for the anime, right? So what is the reason behind the boom in the KnY manga sales until the beginning of this year, and its rankings which are always in the top 3 of WSJ magazine?
Sometimes ago, I did a research and presentation about the anime/manga industry along with the cultural reforms that contributed to the revival of the Japanese economy after the war. In that research, there was a detailed analysis of the connection between the original manga and the anime adaptation as a yin-yang relationship. They are all for the sake of the original publisher and the animation studio, so one will complement the other.
Manga is a product which only attracts a certain group of people, it is not so popular since there are homemakers, young children, the elderly, and people who are not fond of reading, those who do not find manga interesting. But anime is more universal and extensive, as you know, Japanese families often buy a TV to watch the news or to entertain on weekends. The anime is only about hearing and watching, so anyone can access it. When a manga is adapted to an anime, it brings the original closer to the people, and furthermore, hopefully, make it to the big screen.
On the other hand, the original manga is the base, the soul of the work, so readers feel more excited when waiting for each chapter be published in the magazine, waiting for the changes to be re-compiled each time for a new volume. So the manga contributes to increasing a large number of consumers. Of course, buying DVD-BD is definitely more expensive than buying the volume.
As a result, success is mutual support between manga and anime. And making an anime warmly-received is not that easy, the good base of the manga should be credited and vice versa.
I will talk more about the content of the original in the second reason. But initially, it is necessary to distinguish: not all good originals are well-received and vice versa. Everything’s got its relative value, in which context and timing play a role.
Tumblr media
2. The charisma of the protagonist, Tanjirou, a young boy trying to save his sister; With a warm-hearted characteristic, his story is not about “revenge” but “restoration”
11 over 10 people being asked, answered that KnY’s success comes from the main character. This is yet another compliment to the editor who directed the way for KnY, Katayama-san, for orienting to make a more gentle, kind Tanjirou, eliminating the brute in the original portray.
Firstly, it is appropriate in this day and age to have a main character who is kind and gentle, which replaces for the old MC portray, who was noisy, hot-tempered and “brainless”. Secondly, it suits the plot that Croc-sensei wants to shape, a story about a boy finding a way to help his sister to be human back, about family love and values. A character who is kind-hearted, with a loving and protective care towards his sister, is more suitable for the readers. On the other hand, the story which does not turn to revenge, but to the path of helping the younger sister to be back to normal and the main character with his sympathy for the tragic fate of the demons makes the readers/audience impressed and pleased and feel like they’re saved and soothed as well.
Tanjirou takes the crown not only because of his kindness but also the determination and strong will, as he does not forgive the crimes committed by the demons. Yes, he is surely sympathetic to them but they all have to pay for their guilt. Therefore, our main character is always consistent from the beginning to the latest chapter and that personality has never wavered.
Not to mention, there is an indispensable point in the MC of WSJ, that they all constantly try their best and do not deny what they are given.
Tanjirou carries all of those points of a MC of WSJ but still reaches many different types of audiences. Lots of mothers want their children to watch KnY so they can show more love towards their families and younger sisters like Tanjirou does.
That is the greatest success of the series. And that’s the reason why the media team take the slogan “Japan’s softest slaying demon story” to PR KnY successfully everywhere.
Tumblr media
3. The next detail making the manga a big hit is the consistency in story theme, which is “family”
As everyone knows, the shounen mangas in general and ones in the WSJ, in particular, all discuss the solidarity. But there is a theme in KnY which reaches the audience more easily and widely: “family”. This is the affection that almost everyone can receive and understand.
The modern social situation of Japan, an Asian country, where even though family love is appreciated, the family warmth have gradually disappeared. Children who reach the age of independence and are out of a parent’s guardianship are able to easily leave the country, live independently and rarely return to visit their family. Here in Japan, the proportion of the elderly, late marriage and single people is increasing sharply. The rate of living alone now in Japan is very high and alarming. So a series about love for parents and siblings in the family is like warmth for this cold society.
From an old man’s POV who are living here: “I feel wholesome and nostalgic of the days I spent with my family, feel warm when watching KnY, and how Kamado siblings protect each other.”
The elderly do not pay attention to whatever trend is, they just watch TV basically to enjoy good work and support it.
The family theme is easy to empathize and to be delivered, so even the kids can watch and enjoy it with their mom. There are some POVs from some mothers, telling that their little kids love KnY and hoping they love their family just like the characters in the story do.
Although the context in the story is dark, the path of the story, the way expressing the theme of Croc-sensei is easy to understand, which brings in the light in the darkness and makes the number of readers become more diverse, makes the work more popular and universal.
Tbh, KnY is still very “bright” compared to many series in Japan, so a lot of children can approach this manga. Moreover, there are many cute characters and details in the story.
Tumblr media
4. The gap between characters makes a unique way in Gotouge-sensei’s character creation
The Japanese love the interesting dynamic, and they define it as “the gap”. The more surprising gap a character has, the more popular that character is. Briefly, it is, “not judging the book by its cover”.
The first example is the character has the same or sometimes, more popularity over the MC in Japan, Zenitsu. They don’t usually like noisy guys, but because Zenitsu is a cool character and has an interesting gap, which attracts readers. Apart from his noisy, cheerful behaviour,  he is a serious, thoughtful and experienced person who accepts pain and loss just like an adult.
Then there are countless characters with interesting gaps like Inosuke, Giyuu, and the Pillars. Crocs-sensei’s characters are not many, compared to a shounen series. But this is the mangaka’s intelligence to choose the strengths outshining the weakness. Although sensei does not create many characters, sensei has built the base for the character very well, for the impressive appearance of each one and makes the readers/audiences remember them deeply.
The proof of this success is that KnY goods are sold out with every character, from the most to least favourite.
Tumblr media
5. The story is clearly set in the Taisho era, coming with its proportional design and architecture that makes the reader accessible
Taisho era is neither old nor new. The people witnessing the change in that era are still alive. But Taisho was the period of transition with the insecurities in the society. So the creation of a fantasy battle with the chaos between demons and people is extremely suitable for the Taisho era.
There are billions of reasons, like the previous parts, here would mention only main points. KnY is simply a normal series, but it is the ORDINARINESS that pulls out the EXTRAORDINARINESS and delivers those CLOSER to the readers. And this “extraordinariness” is not something that a so-normal series can do.
I love the welcoming spirit of the Japanese, they always appreciate new things, yet never forget to maintain and preserve the old ones.
Because it is a constant rule in development.
The same thing applies for the WSJ: increasing sales for the currently published series, at the same time discovering and boosting new titles. And the latter is more important than the former. But they still welcome new series that inherit such values in shounen genre, the magazine would develop the series open-heartedly if it is deserved.
I am also a fan of shounen and WSJ, I think KnY totally deserves the success it has achieved now.
I also hope it is kindly well-received because Kimetsu no Yaiba was made not to be a replacement, not to take any seats from any series. It is simply a shounen legacy in WSJ magazine. You would know that the spirit in shounen manga highly values this “inheritance” characteristic.

Finding Kurt Hummel: The Purple Piano Project
Tumblr media
Masterpost
3x01: The Purple Piano Project
Welcome to Season 3! I’ll try not to whine too much while we’re here, lol :)
The season starts out on a relatively high note, however, making the whole thing feel a lot more promising than it ended up being.  This episode is fun and quirky and there are a lot of pianos for Kurt to drape himself on top of!!
Future Plans
Tumblr media
So – we start off the season much like season two – Ben Jacob Israel going around and harassing everyone about their summer vacations and future plans.
Do you see the set up of this shot, guys?  Rachel chattering in the front while Kurt tries to be distracting in the background?  Well – get used to it, because this Hummelberry dynamic is going to drag us through the next two years, guys, lol.  No really – I enjoy Hummelberry in this episode, I do.  But we had no idea this was a set up for (I’m sure someone will argue me on this) the worst Kurt arc on the show – Getting into NYADA.  And, unfortunately, the Hummelberry dynamic (or more so the writer’s obsession with Rachel not being able to fail at anything) plays into that.
Tumblr media
Probably going off a rush of a summer where all they talked about was going to New York, Kurt and Rachel have all their future plans figured out.  They’re going to get a little apartment on the Lower West Side (yeah, sure), Rachel’s gonna be a big Broadway star, and Kurt’s gonna be married (legally!!!) by 30.  Yes – think about what is said here, I know Kurt has Broadway ambitions, too, but I find it funny that his dream aspirations include getting married.
There are two key things I’d like to point about the whole marriage thing.  Kurt says by 30.  As we find in this season – not before 30 cause that is Too. Young.  But also.  Yes.  Kurt Hummel wants to get married.  And I’m pretty sure he already knows who his groom is going to be.
But anyway, thinking about season 2, and how that started in such a dark place for Kurt, here we have the opposite – bright and shining optimism.  Oh, kiddo.  This really can only go down, can’t it.
Purple Pianos
Tumblr media
Kurt: Why’s the T-Rex eating the Jew?
It’s exposition dump time! As we get filled in that the Glee Club remains uncool after the Nationals debacle from last year.  Kurt gets his share of funny lines as we get filled in.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile – the glee club is three men down; Quinn pissed off the writers again, Lauren was fired, and Sam just couldn’t work out a contract deal.  So – Will gets the idea that placing purple pianos everywhere would inspire new people to join the club.  I’m not entirely sure how purple pianos are inspiring, but like Kurt, I’m totally on board with the whole thing.
As seen in the background, the moment he can, he gets himself up and draped over one of the pianos.
See – look how adorable he is on that piano!!!
Tumblr media
Anyway – Will bores us with another inspiration speech that means mostly nothing since no one joins glee club anyway….
NYADA – School for Witches
Tumblr media
Lol – oh Kurt, you’re making the best faces in this episode so far….
First of all, let’s talk about the fact that Emma thought he and Rachel were dating (omg!), and the fact that he actually takes the pamphlet about ‘Me and My Hag’ (Lol).  Secondly, let’s talk about these sillies not doing their research on how Julliard is not a musical theater school.  At least Emma is doing the job she’s supposed to be doing in this episode!
And then she steers them in the direction of New York Academy of Dramatic Arts.  Oh NYADA and my distaste for you begins, lol….  So, this particular school only takes 20 students a year.  Hmmm…  Looks a lot bigger than that in season 4 but whatever.  And the chances that two people from the same school and graduating year getting in? Doubtful.  But this is Glee, so here we go!
Competitive Spirit
Tumblr media
It’s the first day of school, and Blaine is still a Warbler, but his resolve is crumbling because Kurt is very persistent (and flirty and adorable) in this scene. You know there’s some interesting meta floating around about this scene recently – about their competitive nature and about how Blaine really isn’t /that/ competitive, but Kurt totally is.  He doesn’t mind it at all, really, which means, in a way, that they’re on equal footing.  Ah, how that is all about to change.
Tumblr media
But what Kurt really wants is for Blaine to be around all the time so they can spend every minute of every day together.  Oh, Kurt.  Be careful what you wish for. But also – interestingly – they spent all the time together back when Kurt was at Dalton, and Kurt wants that little fairy tale to continue by bringing Blaine over to McKinley.  It’s obvious they talked about this at length over the summer, but I wonder what Kurt’s (more serious) arguments were for getting Blaine to come to public school.
But anyway – the fun stuff – just how adorable and flirty these two are here! Hands might not have wandered south of the equator, but they were definitely up to stuff over the summer!
We Got the Beat
Tumblr media
I’ve always thought Kurt was very pretty in this scene.
I should probably have more profound analysis.
Well, there’s not much to say, other than Kurt’s used to being bullied by the school, and he’s not about to make himself a target by getting up and singing on the lunch tables, no matter how pretty the pianos are.
Tumblr media
Year 3 and Kurt’s still an awkward little dancer. <3
This song is nice and fun and energetic.  Not really a favorite of mine, but man, what does it take to get this school into anything?  Geez!
Tumblr media
You know, for someone who is so particular about their clothes – I’m sure this is like the zombie apocalypse.  Poor Kurt. I love the food ray shield.
You know, never once in all my schooling did I witness a food fight.
Tumblr media
Kurt is just not having it.
Tumblr media
Kurtcedes lives! If only to pass along exposition.  And to exchange bewildered looks as Sugar sings her god-awful song.
You know it’s funny – I never noticed how seasons 2 and 3 (and 4 actually) openers have plotlines of – let’s open up glee club for everyone! Except not really because we’re a seclusive little bunch.
Velma and Roxy
Tumblr media
Small town is small after you’ve been to the big city.  But Kurt has a plan, that they’re gonna out preform all the other Ohio hopefuls so they can get a shot at their dreams.  I think, for the first time, I kinda get the purpose of this song (other than the blatant relation to Wicked and connection to season 2), but that they’re already counting in their victory against all the other hopefuls.  They’re putting their cart before the horse.
Tumblr media
Say what you will about Gay Hogwarts, NYADA does attract the witches….
Tumblr media
The song itself is a little ridiculous but the performance is wonderful.  I love the choreography of this one.  And as always sound fantastic together, and this performance is no exception.  Say what you will about how Hummelberry was written – and I will say a lot over the next two seasons – Lea and Chris’s voices suit each other wonderful, and the show seems to latch on to that pretty well.
Transfer
Tumblr media
Not exactly a pic of Kurt, I know, but Blaine’s so frickin’ gorgeous in this scene.  And Kurt thinks so, too!! Look at that grin!
But I’m kinda fascinated by this, now that I think of it, how Blaine’s all – check me out Kurt – in this kind of suave way.  And, oh Kurt, kind of caught up in his own drama to even notice that his boyfriend’s one outfit has changed.
Tumblr media
But, just, the excitement Kurt has when Blaine’s decided to transfer.  OMG! the boy is so happy.
Tumblr media
I love that Kurt has concerns – and they are so totally valid.  Blaine did transfer to be with Kurt, and that’s going to play a part in some of their bigger issues.  But for now, they can reveal in their happiness and not think at all about nasty, nasty break ups.
And – getting Blaine into New Directions.  But since the only competition is Sugar, there really isn’t an issue here.
Tumblr media
Oh Kurt – so giddy that he’s once again getting sung to in the courtyard.  Can this year get any better?!?!
Tumblr media
Everything’s great util you light the piano on fire.
Velma and Roxy II
Tumblr media
Kurt and Rachel are so ready for this NYADA mixer! Only to find out that while at McKinley they might be special snowflakes, in the real world, they’re a dime a dozen.  I like the reality of this scene, tbh.  That you can give your 1 in a Billion speeches all you want, there’s always going to be someone else who seems like they’re more talented than you.  There are a lot of things Glee misses the mark on when it comes to college.  Or theater.  And this scene is a bit over the top.  But it does show that, hey, there are a ton of people trying to make it the same as you – and so you do have to ask yourself – do you have what it takes to compete? Or do you just walk away.
Tumblr media
I think now’s a good time to bring up the Glee Project.  I never watched it, tbh, so I can’t judge what kind of a show it was. But I’m not a fan of the results of the Glee Project.  And I don’t mean who won and who didn’t (Damien McGinty? Really?).  I mean that I have lots of problems with season 3.  But I think one of my biggest is that a show with a cast already overflowing now has to shoehorn these winners into the plot.  (I mean, think about how much space the show would have had without Rory)  Outside of Unique, I’m not really a fan of the characters that grew out of the Glee Project.
That said, Lindsey Pierce was one of the winners, and her little moment to shine here seems perfect enough.  She’s a great vocalist, and I’m incredibly impressed by what she does here.  This performance is excellent.
Anyway – going back to Kurt’s story.  It’s kinda hilarious how perfect a song choice this is – this group of kids basically stating that anything you guys can do Kurt and Rachel, we can do better.  Oh Glee with all its subtleties.
Tumblr media
So.  Kurt and Rachel make it back to the car and break down crying because that’s what happens when your optimistic view point gets smashed.  Poor kiddos.
And then we get Kurt gives Rachel a pep talk v.2.0 (yes, i’ll be numbering these).  And it’s similar to the Born This Way talk – that Rachel is good enough to get in because she’s still special.  The thing, though, as much as I joke around, is that I do honestly like this scene.  Because Rachel is in Kurt’s corner, too, supporting him even though he’s down on himself for lack of extracurriculars.  The scene is a balanced one, where they both pull each other out of this dark place, and I can really do Hummelberry when this kind of thing happens.
Tumblr media
Gay High-five!!
You Can’t Stop the Beat
Tumblr media
Oh, I have waited so long to screencap this.  There’s a gif out there that’s even funnier though.
Anyway – there’s a ton crammed into this little scene.  Blaine joins glee club, which is yay!! But c’mon, Finn, you’re seriously having issues with Blaine possibly taking the spotlight when you and Rachel get all the solos? And Santana’s out for the week.  Why is she only out for one week? Who knows.  And then, finally, Kurt’s feeling ambitious and running for Student Body President, and Blaine’s super proud of him.  Can’t you tell by the still above?
But the moral of the story is you can pull all of the strings out of the purple piano but you can’t pull out it’s music.  Or, er,  something like that.
Tumblr media
Kurt’s feeling light and airy after that handjob.  Oh, wait, nope.
It’s funny, I think this episode still holds up.  It’s crammed full of things, almost to a fault, but is still funny and endearing and services all the storylines it’s going to be presenting during the first third of the season.  I still really enjoy this episode even if season 3 goes mostly downward for me from here.
Tumblr media
It’s Season 3 people. Bam!

"Lots of people possess an opinion about whether organic food is greater (or equally or less) healthful compared to conventional food. It may be shocking to know only a very small quantity of scientific tests have dealt with this query. There are, nevertheless, quite a few studies that compare the vitamin antioxidant, anti oxidant contents of conventional and organic fruits and vegetables, or the fatty acid composition of conventional and organic milk. The reason is that it is far more easy to gauge the vitamin content of fruit than to measure in case one is fitter. As a way to quantify healthiness, one would need to have a group of individuals ingesting just organic and just another one eating only normal foodstuff, then after a little few years compare that group is fitter (this sort of scientific tests have been discussed in greater detail further below). People are hard to scientists and control inside such a study can, for example, perhaps maybe not record their own food ingestion correctly. Organic farmers also utilize specific procedures to cut back air, soil, and water pollution." 7"Natural environment diversity caused by landscape spacious complexity inorganic farming plays also three important roles: environmental, cosmetic and production and health functions. The environmental function is present of keeping biodiversity and homeostasis, i.e. stability and optimal species number. Natural farms create an existence foundation for plant and animal species, perhaps not merely those but accompanying species. The manufacturing function relies upon prophylaxis, i.e. the use of prevention, not control, guarding plants from germs, pests and plant disorders. This helps retain biological balance, i.e. homeostasis of whole landscape. The aesthetic and wellbeing of organic farming admits that we're an integral portion of the environment and could only exist in harmony with nature" 6"Defining natural and organic consumers and assessing organic diet plans, e.g., which sort of meals items, and also the participation of food into the complete diet are all major problems in population research studies. You'll find no methods to gauge the diet humans with no significant malfunction. Investigation describing socioeconomic and lifestyle characteristics of natural meals consumers has recently demonstrated that ingestion is a complicated phenomenon between diverse groups that do not belong in to on average defined consumer sections.Number 2 Protecting Your EarthExactly why are omega3 fatty acids therefore crucial? Let's determine organic is organic? No 6 Natural Food H AS Healthy FatFactory farming is a superior polluter of our soil, rivers, and seas. Two thirds of the country's drinking water has been observed to have elevated heights of nitrates, a effect of pesticides and fertilizers . These chemicals do not just stop at our drinking tap water. They keep to stream to oceans and our food . In 2008 scientists found 405 dead zones because of this utilization of highly soluble fertilizer that is synthetic.4. Offer is constrained. Some studies stated under have found that conventionally improved foods talking and organically grown foods have no substantial differences within their own nutritional grade.

I read a really excellent post about Adel’s character arc in UTK2. It then got me thinking about one point I’ve been wanting to argue for a while about Derek, and the narrative’s treatment of him, and I finally decided to type it all up. So here’s a really long essay/meta/character analysis that no one asked for.
(Note to self: why do you always write these things at 3 in the morning?)
I don’t think Derek relied on the Healing Touch, or at least, not in the way the game says he did. I don’t think he ever relied on it as a way to complete surgeries. In Emilio’s case- well, let me put it into context first, taking the Healing Touch talk out of the equation.
Derek was a surgeon having to juggle four patients at once. All in serious and unstable (in other words, critical) condition. When you have that number of people to treat at once, and such limited resources (in this case, the resource was Derek himself), you have to apply a concept known as triage. This was very lightly touched on in that chapter, though never by name.
Basically, you have to look at the patients and their conditions. A broken arm gets treated before the flu, for example. Then you look at their status- how is their heart rate, BP, oxygenation, pain level, etc? Are they stable, or are they getting worse? In this specific situation, you had Emilio, Heather, and two unnamed others. The other two were never seen, but it’s safe to assume they were even worse off than Heather and Emilio. Heather and Emilio started at out roughly equal condition and stability, but then Heather lost consciousness.
So you have four patients, all unstable (somewhat inherent with what we see from GUILT, since it’s prone to worsening at random times [CoughWhenThePlotDictiatesCough]), probably with similar vital signs and such, which would make it a bit of a toss-up. BUT there’s one crucial difference- by the time the operations start, Emilio is the only one who’s still conscious. Consciousness is a big deal- it’s a lot more then plot relevance. A person passing out suggests whatever injury or illness is present is going to become fatal pretty soon if left untreated. It means that whatever is going on has taken such a toll that the brain goes “yeah, sorry, I gotta check out and deal with this other stuff. Good luck.” (Or, alternatively, that the brain itself is injured.) That means that all three of the others automatically were in more danger than Emilio. That is why Derek made the judgment call to treat Emilio last. It was one crucial area that suggested he was more likely to survive than the others, and that ironically doomed him.
This decision was said- even by Angie- to be the correct one. Even if it cost Emilio his life, three other people walked out of there; Derek and Angie just took Emilio’s death harder because he was younger and they knew him better.
Alright, now let’s re-introduce the Healing Touch into this. Yes, Derek does mention the possibility of using it to Angie, but notice how he really only brings it up after she questions his triaging? I don’t remember the exact, verbatim dialogue, but it’s to the effect of, “are you sure you want to treat Emilio last?” “Yeah, and if I have to, I can use my Healing Touch.”
He’s not relying on it to save Emilio, or else it would have been the first factor he mentioned while assessing the situation. (In other words, something like, “well, these three are in bad shape, but I can use my Healing Touch for them, let’s save Emilio first.”). He’s bringing it up as a last resort; he’s saying he’ll use it if and only if he has nothing else. (And, though this is little more than a headcanon, I kinda got the impression that he knew on some level saving Emilio wasn’t going to happen, but he falsely reassured himself that his Healing Touch would work to give himself enough hope to carry on with the other three operations. That interpretation, though, would require far more rambling from me, so I’ll save it for another day.) He’s saying that he’ll treat Emilio like a regular doctor would, and if the situation looks too dire, then he’ll use it in the hopes of saving him. It’s exactly how the Healing Touch should be used. He just ran out of time to attempt it.
One of the four patients wasn’t going to make it out of there, and it just happened to be Emilio. Derek himself kinda notes this while he’s having his internal conflict later- wondering if Heather would simply have taken Emilio’s place had he treated Emilio first. And yes, she probably would have. Again, Tyler and Angie (grudgingly, for the latter) both said that Derek made the right choice. That means even if he had been relying on the Healing Touch like he was accused of, his only misjudgment would have been in motivation, not action. His alleged dependence on the Healing Touch didn’t alter the outcome.
All that said, there was one way that Derek was relying on the Healing Touch. Paradoxically, that reliance had nothing to do with surgery; he relied on it psychologically. In UTK2, before the resurgence of GUILT, when Derek is at his best and happiest- even then, Derek has self esteem issues. They just happen to come across at that point in the story as just adorable modesty. When he’s at his worst, post-Emilio, we see the true depth of it, including the fact that he doesn’t actually think he’s a good doctor. A lot of the seeds for this are planted in UTK; he gets very little respect from his colleagues at the start of the game. Sure, at that point he’s not exactly a respectable doctor, but it still is easy to see how being treated as a joke would take a toll on a guy’s confidence, no?
Consider this, too: in Derek’s eyes, his only strength as a doctor is surgery. But before he discovered his Healing Touch, back in chapter one of UTK, he wasn’t the most capable surgeon at his hospital, let alone in the world. In short? Even his greatest skill, at that point in time, was average at best. Ouch.
But then, a bit later, he discovers his Healing Touch, while also vowing to shape up as a doctor. Since they happened simultaneously, it’s easy to see why he thought they were the same event. Suddenly he was a great surgeon, and shortly after that he was a fantastic surgeon, and then before he knew it he was the world’s best. To him it was because of the Healing Touch, and not any of his own merit.
To Derek, the Healing Touch was what earned him respect- even from the friend/classmate whose papers he used to cheat off of!- it made him the best in his field, it led him to save hundreds of lives that otherwise would have been doomed... No wonder the Healing Touch was so important to Derek that losing it made him go from “traumatized and in need of intensive therapy” to “total wreck”.
And that’s my point, really- he was relying on the Healing Touch psychologically, not physically/practically. It wasn’t a matter of needing it to complete operations, it was a matter of needing it to view himself as a doctor worthy of his spot at Caduceus.
So, if I had to say it briefly: what happens when you take someone with no self esteem, give them a rare and enviable skill, then traumatize them so badly that they can’t do it anymore, all the while having them be screamed at and berated by the person/people they trust most? Derek. Derek happens.

Supernatural: Nihilism (14x10)
My heart!!!
Cons:
When Maggie was leading the gang from the alternate world, I literally forgot who she was for a second. I didn't hate her moments in the episode, but this character, and all of the folks from the apocalypse world, have been somewhat mismanaged this season. We needed more buildup for them. Also, is Garth still in the trunk? Ha.
How did they get cuffs that could contain an Archangel? That felt a tad unrealistic to me. This show famously has a big problem with power creep, but an equally big problem is that the Winchesters have exactly as much power as the show needs them to have, for whatever plot contrivance they've come up with. These cuffs exist, but in another moment they might not, depending on whether or not they want Michael to be free.
Pros:
But whatever. This episode kicked ass. I love Dean so much and I'm so sad all of the time about him. But let's start with some smaller subplot stuff first.
Like I said, I didn't hate the stuff with Maggie. It was fun to see that these folks from the other world show such loyalty to Sam, Dean, and Cas. It's cute to know that Sam has garnered so much loyalty, and that there's this whole system in place to deal with catastrophe. I mean, sure, Michael and his monsters are a little overwhelming, but at least it's something.
Also, Jack. One of the great things about Michael in this episode is that he tailors his psychological torture to each person's fears and insecurities. Pretty basic stuff for a villain, of course, but it's done here so well. Michael might have tried to get to Jack by pointing out that he's useless without his powers, but that's not quite the route he takes. That's part of it, sure, but more specifically, Michael plays on Jack's insecurities about Dean's feelings towards him. He says that Dean didn't really care when Jack died, that Dean only cares about Sam and Cas, and that Jack is just a burden for him. Of course, Michael is in Dean's head while he's saying all of this. And at the same time, Jack can't help but remember that Dean wasn't exactly warm towards him in the beginning.
All of this delicious angst leads to a great moment where Jack is able to use his powers to save everyone from Michael's monsters in the bunker. Using his powers burns off part of his soul, but he does it anyway to save his family. There's a really excellent coda to Jack's little subplot where he talks with Cas, and Cas gives him a "concerned dad" lecture. Cas knows what could happen if Jack lets too much of his soul burn away. The consequences could be more dire than just Jack's life. I love this, and I love that the super-powered nephilim thing is now coming with some serious costs. Jack can maybe still use his powers to save the day, but there are limited bullets in that chamber. I'll be interested to track Jack's psychological state as we move forward.
And oh boy. Speaking of psychological states... let's talk about Dean Winchester. The prison that Michael uses to trap him is not one of torture, and it's not one of pure bliss, either. As Sam and Cas figure out, it's... contentment. Things aren't perfect. Dean has a bar and has a good friend in Pamela, but the bar is in dire financial trouble, and Pamela is just a friend - Dean doesn't have a partner or spouse. Sam and Cas are still out there hunting, and Dean still has to deal with monsters seeking revenge. It's... in between. It's maybe the happiest ending Dean can imagine for himself, given all of the trauma he's been through. Anything better, and Dean would suspect that something was wrong.
Cas and Sam are just so deliciously scared the whole episode. Seeing their worry for Dean is obviously precious to me in every way. I want to point out that once again Sam and Cas are framed within this episode as being equal parts of Dean's life. When Michael is taunting Jack, he says that Dean doesn't really love him: "you're not Sam, you're not Cas." In Dean's mind prison, Sam and Cas are out together on a ghoul hunt, and should be back soon. When Michael shows up, and Dean awakens to what's really going on, Michael tries to tear Sam and Cas down, and also torture Dean, by suggesting some really ugly things about their relationships: Dean doesn't really care about Cas, he just feels like he owes him. And Sam? Dean knows that Sam is going to leave him again one day, and that he can't really trust him. Hearing these words is painful for everyone involved, in the best way possible. Michael really is conniving.
Also, Michael mocks Cas by quoting his first words to Dean: "I'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition." It was utter perfection and I had to stop and rewind to watch it again.
Somebody with more time than me is going to go back and catch all of the little snippets we heard in Dean's mind, when Cas was looking for him. There was a lot of really juicy stuff in there, and I want to hear more. We hear Dean screaming in pain, we hear him calling out Sam's name, we hear him confronting the evil within him when he had the Mark of Cain... I want to do more analysis of this great material.
Often with Supernatural, the thing I care about most is the way the characters react to these various premises. Often, the premises themselves are kind of weak, or cliche, or predictable. But I actually gasped out loud when Dean said "I'm the cage" after trapping Michael within his own mind. Maybe it is kind of predictable, given the stuff this show has done before, but I love this concept. 100% golden. Now we get to watch Dean struggle with his inner darkness in a very literal way, and we know that the threat of Michael breaking through is always there, lurking just around the corner. This is going to give Jensen some great acting opportunities.
Finally, let's talk about that scene with Billie in the end. This is some Doctor Strange from Infinity War shit going on, and I am here for it! Billie tells Dean that all of his potential future deaths have been re-written, and all end with Michael breaking free and destroying the earth using Dean as a vessel. All... except one. And she hands the book to Dean. Dean reads it, but we don't get to know what it says. I'm SO. HERE. FOR. THIS. The look on Dean's face as he reads the words is so enigmatic. Is he heartbroken? Confused? We can see in the promo for next week's episode that Dean is acting weird. Some of that is probably because he has Michael locked up in his brain, but obviously a big part of it is knowing what needs to happen to save the world. I'm absolutely delighted by this turn of events!
That's where I'll stop for now. Excellent episode. Truly amazing. Very scared for whatever happens moving forward!

Why the healthcare industry is being targeted by Hackers?
Why the healthcare industry is being targeted by Hackers?
Health care is one of the most important industries. While other sectors focus on products people want, the medical field provides a service the public actually needs. Sadly, this altruism isn’t rewarded. Hackers are increasingly targeting these institutions with their nefarious plots, and a lot of patients are getting caught in the crossfire. The problem here is that quite a lot of people don’t understand the threat facing the health care industry right now. News reports of retailers and financial institutions getting hacked have people thinking these are the most targeted sectors, but this just isn’t true. Analysis of 10 years of cyber-attack data actually points to health care as being the most hacked industry out there. Clearly, hackers have a lot of motivation to go after these kinds of institutions. However, hospitals don’t really come to mind when most people think of an easy buck.
Why hackers target Hospital or healthcare industry
Healthcare organizations collect and store vast amounts of personal information, making them a major target for cyber-criminals. This valuable data can be used for identity theft, says Peter Carlisle, head of EMEA at cloud and data security company Thales security. “In the US, stolen personal health insurance information can be used by criminals to obtain expensive medical services, devices, and prescription medications, as well as to fraudulently acquire government benefits like Medicare or Medicaid.”
Healthcare breaches are especially serious because personal data can, in some cases, mean the difference between life and death. For example, says Carlisle, it could cause medications to become mixed up – or people might fail to get treatment for conditions such as diabetes. Making things worse, healthcare providers often struggle to find room in tight budgets to invest in new IT systems, leaving them vulnerable. “Compliance issues are commonplace in healthcare too, where organizations need to meet stringent requirements of governing bodies such as HIPAA,” Carlisle adds.
Why a VAPT service could have been a good habit to prevent hack?
NOW LET US SEE WHAT CEO OF ICSS HAD SAID ABOUT THIS TOPIC
What type of attacks the healthcare industry has seen in the past?
Security concerns are growing exponentially in healthcare, as hospitals become the most financially lucrative targets for cyber-attackers. The main reason for the increase in cyber-criminals targeting the healthcare industry is for the ease with which hackers can pull vast amounts of personal data from aged systems that lack necessary security features. The main reason for the increase in cyber-criminals targeting the healthcare industry is for the ease with which hackers can pull vast amounts of personal data from aged systems that lack necessary security features.
THE “KANE” INCIDENT
The theft or even alteration of patient data had been a looming menace long before Dutchman “Kane” compromised Washington University’s Medical Center in 2000. The hospital at the time believed they had successfully detected and cut off the attack, a belief they were rudely disabused of six months later when Kane shared the data he’d taken with Security Focus journalist Kevin Poulsen, who subsequently published an article describing the attack and its consequences. This quickly became global news. Kane was able to stay hidden in the Medical Center networks by allowing his victims to believe they had expelled him. He did this by leaving easily discoverable BO2K Remote Access Trojans (a tool developed by the hacker group, “Cult of the Dead Cow” and popular around the turn of the century) on several of the compromised servers while his own command and control infrastructure was somewhat more discrete. The entire episode is well documented online and I suggest you read up on it, as it is both an excellent example of an early modern APT and a textbook case of how not to deal with an intrusion—procedurally and publicly.

Ransomware
Notable Example: Presbyterian Medical Center
One of the more common types of an attack occurring in 2016 has been ransomware. When this occurs, a hacker infiltrates the network and accesses data. It is then copied over and encrypted. Once encryption is complete, the original data will be deleted and data will be inaccessible until a ransom is paid. This usually results in an inability to access the EHR while the application is locked down; any communication has to be completed via telephone calls or faxes, resulting in an overall delay inpatient care.
This recently occurred at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in February 2016. Hackers used malware to infect the computers at the facility and stopped communication between devices. They demanded a ransom of $17,000 to restore their applications back to fully functional. Physicians were unable to access medical records for more than a week and they were forced to utilize paper record keeping until the facility ultimately paid the requested amount. While Hollywood Presbyterian stated that patient care was not impacted, patient history could not be viewed and test results could not be shared from lab work, X-rays, and more. It is believed that this occurred because an employee opened an infected email or downloaded the malware from a pop-up ad which brought the virus onto the network. A few weeks later, a group of Turkish hackers claimed responsibility for the attack which may mean that the motivation of the attack was not to steal patient data for financial means but as a political statement.
What kind of action or preventive measures have saved the industry from being hacked and face humiliation?
These days most of our important transactions happens over the internet. The hackers have numerous ways to steal important data which is then put to misuse. Below there are five most common ways your data can be stolen and the precaution you can take to stay safe:
1. Phishing
Phishing is a fake email masquerading as legitimate. Hackers create phishing emails through which they intend to steal your confidential information like passwords and bank account details. This kind of email appears to have come from a well-known person or organization like your bank or company that you work for. These emails generally try to create urgency or panic to trick users into giving out their personal details. For example, you receive an email from your bank saying that your ATM card has been disabled and you need to confirm your card number or your Aadhaar number to re-activate it. A victim who has received this email might think that it is from a legitimate source when in reality this email has been sent from a malicious hacker trying to steal your confidential information.
HOW TO PREVENT IT:
Look for spelling or grammatical errors in domain names or email addresses. Cybercriminals also often use email addresses that resemble the names of well-known companies but are slightly altered. For example, [email protected] instead of [email protected] (“l” instead of “i”).
Think twice before clicking any links. If you see a link in a suspicious email message, don’t click on it. Instead, hover your mouse on the link to see if the URL matches the link that was provided in the message.
Cybercriminals often use threats that your security has been compromised or your account has been blocked. Don’t fall for such tricks. Take your time to assess the situation.
2. Insecure Network:
Connecting your system or device to an insecure network can create the possibility of a hacker gaining access to all the files on your system and monitoring your activity online. A hacker in control of your system can steal passwords of your social accounts, bank accounts and even inject malware on authentic websites that you trust. With programs freely available on the Internet, anyone can sit in a car outside your home and access your critical files, accounting data, usernames, and passwords, or any other information on the network. A competitor in possession of such in-depth knowledge of your official documents can be a damaging or even fatal threat to your business.
HOW TO PREVENT IT:
Never connect to open Wi-Fi networks that you can’t trust. Just because it’s free, it doesn’t mean it’s safe too. When in a cafe with a Wi-Fi facility, ask the staff for the Wi-Fi you can connect to instead of randomly connecting to any open network.
If you are using public Wi-Fi, avoid performing any bank transactions or accessing any critical information while being connected. Use strong encryption like WPA2 on your home and office Wi-Fi router instead of Open or WEP security as these can easily be hacked.
Your security is in your own hands. Stay cautious and alert at all times. Always remember, someone, somewhere is trying to hack you and basic security practices mentioned above can protect you from most hacks.
3. Insecure API
There is a big misconception that every app available on the Google Play Store or Apple store is safe and legitimate. However, this is not the case. Not every app available in these stores is safe for users. Some of these apps may contain malicious code that can put your privacy at risk.
HOW TO PREVENT IT:
Always check the permissions before downloading an app.
Check reviews and ratings.
Avoid downloading an app if it has less than 50,000 downloads.
Do not download apps from third-party app stores.
Never download pirated/cracked apps.
4. Malware:
Malware is malicious software that is written with the intent of compromising a system and stealing the data available on the system. These programmers can perform a variety of functions some of which include stealing or deleting sensitive data, modifying the system’s core functionalities, and secretly tracking the victim’s activities. There are various factors that can lead to the installation of malware in your system. One is running an older or pirated version of an operating system that is not safe or updated and thus vulnerable to attacks. Clicking on unknown links or installing fake/pirated software can also lead to the downloading of malicious programmers.
HOW TO PREVENT IT:
Use legitimate anti-virus software.
Do not download any fake software as there are chances it may contain malware.
Never click on fake antivirus pop-ups that are generated from websites.
Always keep your operating system updated.
Never download pirated apps/software as they always contain some kind of malware.
5. Physical Threads:
A physical threat is any threat to your sensitive information that results from other people having a direct physical access to your devices like laptops, hard drives and mobile devices.
Physical security threats are often underestimated in favor of technical threats such as phishing and malware. Physical device threats occur when someone is able to physically gain access to your confidential data like data gathered from stolen devices.
Physical security breaches can happen at your workplace or even at your home. For example, someone could get hold of your confidential files that they are not supposed to see or access an unattended system which is not password-protected.
HOW TO PREVENT IT:
Be careful about how you store confidential information. Use encrypted computer hard drives, USBs, etc if they contain sensitive information. Never write your passwords on a post-it or notepad.
Never leave your system unattended. Always protect it with a strong password.
Don’t leave your phone unlocked and unattended.
Make sure proper backup and remote wipe services are enabled in case you lose your device.

Bookshelf Briefs 5/28/19
Creature Girls: A Hands-On Field Journal in Another World, Vol. 1 | By Kakeru | Seven Seas – This was another “I’ll get the first volume, how bad could it be?” sort of book. The answer is pretty bad, at least for readers of my taste. That said, for those in the market this is aiming for, Creature Girls must be a dream come true. A monster girl story with actual coitus, as well as deep down analysis of the girls’ bodies, almost to the point of parody. The plot is the standard “guy transported to fantasy world” stuff, and there’s a few mentions made of battles against enemies that he helps them with. But the target reader is not here for that. He is here to see monster girls show off their boobs, swear they’re 18, and get screwed. This book gives that to you, in spades. I’ll pass on future volumes. – Sean Gaffney
Haikyu!!, Vol. 32 | By Haruichi Furudate | Viz Media – Oh boy, more full volumes of volleyball. They sure do (punches fist in air) PLAY that volleyball, huh? OK, OK, let me see… the twins’ backstory was quite good, and I enjoyed the end, where we see more of Hinata’s growth to the point where Tsukishima even praises him, as much as Tsukishima is ever going to praise anyone. And credit to the author, 32 volumes in, for continuing to find ways to not make volleyball boring. There are great poses and a fast pace which reminds you why this is such a popular series. The pace is not fast enough that the game is over, though, and I’m fairly sure that the next volume will have me groping for words once more. It’s a good series, though. – Sean Gaffney
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Part 4: Diamond Is Unbreakable, Vol. 1 | By Hirohiko Araki| Viz Media – Ten years after the final battle between Dio and Jotaro in Cairo, the fourth part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure returns to Japan. In the first volume of Diamond Is Unbreakable, Jotaro has come to the town of Morioh to investigate a series of crimes and to search for Josuke Higashikata, his uncle and the illegitimate son of his grandfather Joseph Joestar. When Jotaro finds Josuke he discovers a high schooler with a very powerful Stand and a hair-trigger temper (both literally and figuratively) to go with it, a potentially dangerous combination. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure continues to be a violent and grotesque series—the human and animal cruelty present will be too much for some readers—but I continue to love it for its strangeness, over-the-top action sequences, and ridiculous characters. Josuke in particular is one of those delinquents with a heart of gold that brings me tremendous delight. – Ash Brown
Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, Vol. 3 | By Waco Ioka and Midori Yuma | Viz Media – I’m wondering how much of this series is going to be Aoi healing people’s hearts through the power of delicious food. Oryo spends most of the volume sick (well, the impression is she’s also hiding), but even she will eat Aoi’s food. We also get backstory on Suzuran and Akatsuki, and take a trip back to Japan so that Suzuran can pay her respects to the late Shiro, and also stay behind. It’s a perfect opportunity for Aoi to stay behind as well, something her captor knows only too well, but she chooses to return anyway. This series looks pretty slow burn, so I think the food may outweigh the romance for a while yet. But I’m OK with that. – Sean Gaffney
Kiss & White Lily for My Dearest Girl, Vol. 9 | By Canno | Yen Press – Half this volume is Yukine and Ayaka, who are coming to realize that “winning” or “losing” is not the be-all and end-all of their relationship. Good thing too, as Ayaka finally wins. Elsewhere, we see a girl who’s a repeater (she was injured and couldn’t get attendance credits), so is something of a loner, but also a cosplayer. She ends up falling for a younger, puppy-dog sort of girl, but it’s hard to get over putting people at a distance, so they end up breaking up quickly. But is it really over? This volume frames the “main” pairing right in the middle, with the ‘volume’ pairing as a bookend, and it woks very well. Next volume is the last, so I suspect it will be all Ayaka and Yukine. – Sean Gaffney
Little Witch Academia, Vol. 3 | By Trigger, Yoh Yoshinari and Keisuke Sato | JY – The spinoff comes to an end here, and there’s no real climactic finale—they have to win a flying contest against another school, but Diana is ill, so Akko tries her hardest (and mostly fails) and succeeds in the end, because she’s just that plucky. In the end, I think this spinoff probably works best for the groups it’s marketed for—kids and those who watched the anime. I wasn’t as fond of it as I was the other ones, as it’s clear that any character development is going to be in the main series. But as an advertisement for the main series, it’s excellent—I certainly would like to see more of everyone. Something to get your niece for her birthday—at three volumes, it’s even affordable. – Sean Gaffney
My Monster Secret, Vol. 16 | By Eiji Masuda | Seven Seas – Every new volume of the series after its first “ending” seems to be designed to annoy me—something that also befell the very similar Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, if I recall. As the cover might give away, this volume doubles down on the teacher-student romance between Akari (who has at least appeared a lot) and Sakurada, best known as the least developed one of Those Three Guys, who looks much older than he is, which I guess is supposed to take the curse off the creepiness but doesn’t. Elsewhere, there is still some good comedy—I particularly liked the chapter with the supermarket sale—but more and more it appears this should have ended with the mutual confession. – Sean Gaffney
One-Punch Man, Vol. 16 | By ONE and Yusuke Murata | Viz Media – Still far too serious, and now faced with Saitama barely being in it. Certainly if you like cool fights it’s a good read, but I can get that from a dozen other manga titles. I read this for silliness, and that’s in short supply here. I did like the idea of the superhero “Megane,” who is pretty much just a guy with glasses. There’s also some good development from Garo, whose analysis is top tier, but who sadly is a bit too focused on the wrong things. But then again so are the A-rank heroes—there’s a fair bit of hypocrisy here. At least Genos knows what’s what, and we also get the return of Bang, who has a grudge of his own. It looks like Saitama will show up soon, and thank goodness. Who needs a totally serious One-Punch Man? – Sean Gaffney
Ooku: The Inner Chambers, Vol. 15 | By Fumi Yoshinaga | VIZ Media – Revolution is approaching as the most senior of Iesada’s ministers signs a trade treaty with America without waiting for Imperial approval. This fellow silences his detractors with harsh punishments and winds up assassinated by the end of the volume for his trouble. Meanwhile, the pregnant Iesada has evidently been gotten out of the way by somebody, but it’s unclear who, leaving her bereaved consort Taneatsu in the dark about her demise for a full month. Now he’s doing his best to guide her clever successor, who has just been married to an Imperial prince. She was concerned about deceiving the emperor, since the shogunate’s part of the deal was to oust foreigners, but a big reveal in the final pages proves they’re the ones who’ve been deceived. Still great, if sad. Poor Taneatsu. – Michelle Smith
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization, Vol. 3 | By Tomo Hirokawa, based on the story by Reki Kawahara | Yen Press – The danger is ramped up a lot more in this volume, which also comes with the return of a familiar face from the Progressive series. When it comes to “NPCs can surpass their programming,” no one’s done it more often than SAO, with the current Alicization arc being all about that. Kizmel was (storywise, at least) first, though, and it’s heartwarming to see Kirito and Asuna reunite with her, even if she doesn’t know who they are. That said, this side story is still all about Premiere, who has a role that she is clearly there to fulfill… and also there’s more than one of her? Not for casuals, but SAO fans should find this a lot of fun. – Sean Gaffney
Yowamushi Pedal, Vol. 11 | By Wataru Watanabe | Yen Press – The joy of our whole team of six catching up with one another is tempered by the reminder that there can be only one winner of this race… and that the others are going to drop back and fail. It’s a hard lesson for Onoda to absorb, and by the end of the book he’s still struggling to. The rest of the book is filled with the most manly cycling ever, fortunately, and I have to say pound-for-pound this series even manages to out-shonen the Jump titles. That said, holy hell, this is a long race, and we’re still not done. Sports manga go on forever, and nothing says that better than this omnibus, which equates to vols. 21-22 of the original. I hope Sohoku eventually wins. And by that I mean Onoda. – Sean Gaffney

Appearing before the Dramacourt: Man to Man Ep 03
***If this is your first time browsing The Drama Files, please read The Rules section first for our reviewing and rating system***
Issues:
Whether the reason that Cha Do Ha is a crazy fan girl for Woon Gwang is reasonable
Whether a chicken and beer session helps develop a friendship
Whether Woon Gwang is a big baby
Whether hate and revenge really motivate someone to do work
Whether Park Hae Jin is the king of the Stank Face.
The Rule(s):
Not really. We still don’t really get how Woon Gwang really saved her.
Yes! Friendship blossoms over food!
Totally!
It depends.
Yes!
Analysis:
Jubiemon J: I didn’t think this episode was super exciting because it seemed to be more of a build-up to the mission in Russia. This episode was still cute in some ways like how Woon Gwang makes Sulwoo rehearse with him and then Sulwoo gets too invested in his role as the sobbing actress. Although I did like how the writers tried to make us understand why Do Ha would really become this fan girl of Woon Gwang, I wasn’t very convinced at all. So the two did meet at their worst, yet I don’t really see how Woon Gwang really saved her. She was the one that found him drinking at the rooftop, about to commit suicide. Woon Gwang didn’t help pay off her debt or do anything else, at least in her flashback, so I really wasn’t that convinced that he’d lead her to fall for him like an intense stalker.
Trying to get into character like…
When you end up taking your job a little too seriously
Jubiemon J: I’m still enjoying how Sulwoo doesn’t seem to have fallen for Do Ha yet. When he was listening to her story about how Woon Gwang saved her and how Woon Gwang was still fixated over Mieun, Sulwoo only cared about how Mieun could be used to motivate Woo Gwang to work again. I did find it weird how Sulwoo said that Do Ha only cared about compliments after Woon Gwang was acting all playful after seeing Do Ha in the long, white gown at the Russian party. Sulwoo’s expression seemed to be disgusted with how cheesy Woon Gwang was acting, yet he mentioned that line about Do Ha only caring about compliments. I thought that was out of character; perhaps that could be a mistranslation from the English subs, but I’m not sure as I’m not fluent in Korean. I’m hoping that Sulwoo just focuses on the spy mission. No cheesy romances please.
Smexy ;)
When your coworker starts rambling about their personal drama and you have no choice but to listen
RedRosette J:  I agree with Jubiemon. I also found two thirds of this episode to be rather boring and uninteresting. But it was necessary to show both the build up to the Russia mission, but also for establishing the backstories of the characters. We were introduced to Woon Gwang’s painful story with Mi Eun, Do Ha’s family backstory, and Woon Gwang and Do Ha’s first meeting. I also appreciate the Sulwoo hasn’t fallen for Do Ha yet, but I think he’s starting to catch the feels. I think this is probably why he got all weird when Do Ha was in the dress and got annoyed by Do Ha and Woon Gwang were being all cringey. To me, Sulwoo saying that Do Ha only cared about compliments, seemed to be more of a slight tinge of jealousy at how she reacted to when Woon Gwang called her beautiful as opposed to her reaction when he said she looked pretty in the dress.
Obligatory makeover scene
RedRosette J: I am starting to find the political backstory a little bit more interesting because it seems to have to do more with secret ledgers hidden in wood carvings or something. It might also be because there was barely any of the political stuff in this episode. LOL! I am starting to also get interested in the Woon Gwang-Mi Eun-Seung Jae connection after we were told of their complicated backstory. From what I can tell, it seems like Mi Eun made a deal with the Intelligence dude that impacted her relationship with Woon Gwang. I kind of have a feeling that because Mi Eun was an actress, Seung Jae might have been obsessed with her and when he found out she was seeing Woon Gwang, he orchestrated this plot to have him killed in a stunt driving ‘accident’ and marry her instead. Maybe. I don’t know. My brain is jumping to all kinds of conclusions based on the little tidbits of information we were given in the flashbacks. The episode really picked up at the end with all the spy stuff coming on full force again with the Russia mission. Let’s be real, we are all here for Park Hae Jin basically playing James Bond, so give us more of that kthanksbye.
This is some cool shit
Girl, your crying isn’t going to solve anything
When things turn out worse than you expected
Trying to be concerned like…
When your demons haunt you at night
Apparently this happened
Having to sleep in a room full of pictures of your boss sounds like hell
This isn’t awkward at all…
This guy is not all stable
Issue 1: Whether the reason that Cha Do Ha is a crazy fan girl for Woon Gwang is reasonable
Jubiemon J: Nope. I really disliked how the drama used the overused scene where the lead girl gets drunk and then starts pouring all her feelings out to someone. Can we cut that out? Can we have different types of drunkards like the sort that just sleeps? I’m so sick of the type that spills out the beans in dramas. I feel like that’s a cheap way out for a character to share their feelings. Even when Do Ha explained how she met Woon Gwang and how she became so drawn to him, I just wasn’t persuaded. I’d get it if Woon Gwang ever explained how he saw her as an important friend because she was the one that persuaded him not to commit suicide. On the other hand, based on how she acted or how the scene was written, I really didn’t feel like there was much of a reason for her to turn into a massive fan girl of Woon Gwang. Perhaps the scene could have been extended more then I’d be more convinced that he was her saviour. At this point, he hasn’t done anything much than be a semi-respectful actor towards her.
RedRosette J: Oddly, I disagree with Jubiemon on this issue. To me, all of sudden Do Ha’s crazy fan girling made sense to me. It seems that Do Ha met Woon Gwang when she was at a desperate time in her life. From the morsels we were given about her past, it seems that she has spent her whole life picking up after her father and barely having a stable figure in her life to lean on. So to me, it seemed like Woon Gwang’s introduction to her life must be something she equates with stability and being able to rely on him (more so in a familial way rather than a romantic one). I think that she might be confusing those feelings for romantic love. She just seems to be someone who is very grateful for Woon Gwang coming into her life when she needed someone the most. From Woon Gwang’s perspective, it seems that he also needed Do Ha to be the person that he could rely on for a fresh start. He seems to care about her really like an older brother and dotes on her like any older brother would on a little sister. I don’t see any romantic intentions on his part either and when the two of them are together, it’s really about the familiarity that comes out. Albeit, this could have been done with far less cringe-inducing behaviour but I really think that comes about with the acting rather than the writing. I also appreciated that Do Ha met Woon Gwang before he became famous making her fan girling a little bit less weird. So, I think that the reasons why Do Ha is his fan girl are reasonable.
First impressions
Making friends like…
When friends become family
When dad calls
Serious brother-sister vibes yo
RedRosette J Aside: But I do agree with Jubiemon that the drunk talking trope really needs to be used less in dramas. There are a variety of interesting drunk behaviours that would serve as excellent comedy fodder!
Not everyone drunk talks
Issue 2: Whether a chicken and beer session helps develop a friendship
RedRosette J: Friendship = sharing food. I totally get how having a beer and eating fried chicken creates a lasting and a beautiful friendship. People talk and socialize over food and drink and this is really the epitome of “chilling with friends”. So, yes, it definitely helps develop friendships.
Jubiemon J: Yup. Anything over food is great for developing some sort of bond. It’s how a lot of businesses happen over the dinner table right? Haha. I did like how there was some bonding scene between them here.
The fast track to becoming bffls
Issue 3: Whether Woon Gwang is a big baby
RedRosette J: OMG this dude is such a freakin baby. Honestly, I don’t think I would last a day as his manager. I would literally lose my sanity over this type of childish behaviour. I think again, the drama is capitalizing on a trope where actors are perceived as difficult, highly emotive and dramatic people who need to be mollycoddled the entire time. It makes for excellent comedy but, I think in reality, this type of behaviour would not be tolerated!
Jubiemon J: Woo Gwang is a huge baby. I totally agree! He is always having some sort of fit. It’s hilarious how he barters with his crew and somehow gets his way. He totally acts irrationally whenever his ex gf is there. He’ll do anything for his pride and he’ll do anything to prove that he’s better than her. Somehow he can’t seem to forgive and forget; I get that she did hurt him but hating someone for all your life isn’t a healthy solution. You’ll probably just get more miserable over time.
Issue 4: Whether hate and revenge really motivate someone to do work
RedRosette J: While I do agree that hate and revenge are very strong motivators, I disagree that they are what entirely motivates people. Faith, hope and love are equally strong motivators. Hate and revenge have very specific motivations and although Sulwoo believes that Woon Gwang is motivated by his hate for Mi-Eun, I really think that he still loves and and that that is what really motivates him. It might be a warped version of love but its love regardless. I don’t think he hates her, I think he might be angry at her for leaving him and all that but hate might be a bit too strong of a word. I think that this also foreshadows how Sulwoo’s beliefs are going to change as the drama progresses. I think he’s going to go from someone who sees hate and revenge as strong motivators to seeing that faith, hope and love can be equally as relevant in getting people to do things.
Jubiemon J: I also agree that hate and revenge could motivate someone to work, but there is also what RedRosette mentioned: faith, hope, and love. I think Woon Gwang doesn’t want to admit that he still loves her, so he disguises his love as “hate”. There’s a thin line between love and hate sometimes and in this case, Woon Gwang still cares about her. For him to show so much disdain towards Mi-Eun proves how much she hurt him. I actually think Sulwoo knows that love can motivate someone too because we’ve seen him manipulate romance in his favour. It’s just at this time, Sulwoo is using Woo Gwang’s anger towards Mi-Eun to get him to attend the Russian party.
There has to be more to this backstory
Issue 5: Whether Park Hae Jin is the king of the Stank Face.
RedRosette J: OH MY GOD. I ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY LOVE PARK HAE JIN’S STANK FACE! People need to make memes of this asap! Internet trolls, I’m talking to you guys! (I would, but I seriously lack the tech skills to do it). At this point, no one in the dramaverse does the Stank Face better than Park Hae Jin. I hope he keeps doing this! He’s absolutely hilarious!
Jubiemon J: I didn’t notice his Stank Face until episode 4 actually! I won’t reveal spoilers of ep 4 here, but from the photos that RedRosette have provided here, I agree that his Stank Face is great. I remember cringing when he also cringed! Hehehe! Great job, Park Hae Jin! He’s totally living up to his role in Bad Guys!
When you don’t believe any of the shit your coworker is saying
When you have to deal with lame work jokes
When they suddenly mention you at a meeting
When you realize that you just got roped into doing something majorly boring
When you just can’t take your coworkers anymore

Jubiemon dissent: I’d rate this a 3. Though I adore Park Hae Jin’s Stank Face, this episode was not as amazing as the previous two. The Cha Do Ha scenes were still a bore for me. Sorry.

How Quartile-Based Pricing Doubled This SaaS Company’s Monthly Recurring Revenue Growth
Broadly speaking, you can grow your SaaS three ways: acquire more customers, retain more customers or charge more per customer. At Planio, we focused heavily on acquiring new customers via content marketing and retaining those customers via investing in product development and customer success.
And it worked. In January 2015 our monthly customer account churn rate averaged 2.49% and in January 2017 averaged 2.1%, a 20% reduction. While a lower churn rate is always better, it wasn’t clear that we could get any more big wins by reducing churn. Acquisition was steadily growing as our content efforts started paying off. The last lever—pricing—was one we hadn’t touched in seven years since Planio started, so it made sense to us that it might be the lowest hanging fruit.
Below, I’ll bring you through the process we took in analyzing data on our customer behavior. We’ll go into how we chose our new pricing model, and we’ll show you the exact impact on our monthly recurring revenue (MRR) growth with real figures.
The Importance of Pricing for SaaS Products
Particularly if you are a bootstrapped startup without VC funding, pricing will determine how much you can afford to spend on product development, customer success and product marketing. Wondering whether you can afford to build out an inside sales team for your SaaS? Jason Lemkin says you need to charge at least $299/mo as a rough rule of thumb.
Price Intelligently point out the paradox that, despite its importance, SaaS startups spend very little time at all on their pricing – they cite 6 hours. They also comment that “your pricing is the exchange rate on the value you’re creating in the world.”
This number of 6 hours made us think that we should dig into our pricing. We spent probably even less back then when we first started by simply copying the prices of a few similar tools back then.
Sources of Data on Our Pricing
When you have lots of competition, it’s easy to get trapped into analyzing what the others are doing. The reason this can be a mistake is that competitors’ approaches might not be a good fit for you. For example, their sales and marketing model might be very different to yours and this is reflected in their pricing. Once you reached a certain stage in your growth, you can also analyze how your own customers are using your product.
In Planio’s case, we have about 1,500 paying customers. That gave us a lot of data on how our customers were using our plans. We started analyzing the distributions across the various criteria that make up the plans: number of users, number of projects and storage space. Box plots are a handy way to get a quick sense of the distribution of the number of users each account is using:
The box plot above can give you a quick sense of how many users our customers typically had.
You can see that the median is at 9 users, whereas the highest amount (excluding outliers) is at about 48 users. At the same time, our pricing plans at the time ranged from 6 users at the bottom end to 100 users at the top end.
When we compared the box plot above to our pricing plans, there was a clear disconnect:
75% of our customers has 30 users or less, so they fit within the bottom two plans;
40% of our customers had less than 6 users, so they fit within our bottom 9 euro/month plan.
The result of this disconnect was that a customer with a team of 7 was paying the same as a customer with a team of 30. At the same time, we had almost no customers with more than 48 users.
Our conclusion was that our pricing scale was not calibrated to our customers’ behavior. It was time to make some changes.
Paralysis by Analysis
At the time Planio’s founder, Jan, and I were staring at endless Excel sheets. A big question in our mind was whether we should increase the price on all our customers at once, or whether we should grandfather older customers and just have the new pricing model for newer customers.
Obviously, giving all customers an ultimatum of “pay an increased price or leave” might result in a lot of customers leaving – maybe even angrily. I recommend this approach anyways if you want to see exactly who values your product by sticking with it at the higher price. I think this approach might work if you have a limited amount of time to find product/market fit before you run out of funding runway. The reason is that your current customer base will just be a tiny fraction of your future customer base if your startup is successful.
But we’re bootstrapped, so there wasn’t an intense pressure for future rounds of funding. It also didn’t feel fair on our customers to give them this ultimatum. Then, we stumbled on a very simple solution that seemed the most fair to us.
The Quartile-Based Approach We Took
Going back to the quartiles from the box plot, we noticed that we could segment our customer base into four quarters taking the 25th, 50th and 75th quartiles as the boundaries between the plans.
This shows how our new pricing plans line up with the four quarters.
We then created four quarters based on these points in the data, which would become the new plans. We also increased the pricing of our lowest plan on the basis that charging any business about 9 dollars a month for software core to their business is ranking it lower in value than the air freshener they use in the bathroom.

De-Risking the Pricing Experiment
Honestly, I found it stressful to change our pricing model. You’re tweaking with the revenue engine of an entire business. If things go wrong, the impact can be quite serious.
In our case, we reduced the risk of this pricing experiment by grandfathering existing customers, meaning that they could keep their existing plan. That meant that if the new pricing model turned out to be a fiasco, we could just roll-back a small number of new customers to the old model.
At the same time, we obviously limited our upside: if all our existing customers moved over to our new pricing model without a significant amount of cancellations, we’d stand to increase our monthly recurring revenue overnight by a significant amount.
I think if your SaaS has only been around for a couple of months, you can afford to be more aggressive with testing out new pricing models without grandfathering existing customers. Whether people stay with the new model or not is important data as you grow. In our case, we felt that we didn’t need or have to take that risk, because Planio is a bootstrapped company with 7 years of happy customers and we actually value growing slowly and steadily.
The second way we reduced the risk was to add more value to our existing plans. Previously, we had charged extra for our Team Chat and Customer Helpdesk features. We felt that these features added significant value, but customers were hesitant to pay extra for them, so we rolled them into the standard plans.
With these changes made, we deployed the new pricing changes on February 1, 2016:
We changed the amount of users for each plan according to the quarters shown in the chart above.
The Results of the Pricing Experiment
After we switched over to the new pricing model, we waited for the emails and phone calls to roll in. I imagined hordes of discontented customers pounding down our doors.
But what really happened?
Crickets.
Just for the sake of comparison, we once changed the colors in Planio for default avatars to a selection of pastels, including a range of pink. That change unleashed two phone calls within an hour from (male) CEO’s fearful of suffering the stigma of a pink Avatar.
The impact of the change in pricing on our growth was, however, immediate.
An important metric for us is the average monthly recurring revenue we get per new customer. It tells us that in a certain month, a new customer bought a subscription worth, say 30 euro, on average.
As you can see below, the introduction of the new pricing model significantly increased the average monthly recurring revenue per new customer. Whereas the average MRR per new customer was €24.71 over the previous five years, it went up by over 100% to an average of €50.68 for the 12 month period after the pricing change.
Did this increase our churn rate?
Well in Planio’s case, churn went from 2.49% in January 2015 before the pricing change to an average of 2.1% as of January 2017.
There were some issues for customers who’d considered Planio before the pricing changes but then only signed up after February 1, 2016. We resolved those complaints by just giving them the old plans.
Analyze Your Pricing and Test New Approaches
Our new pricing model at Planio means that we are better at segmenting our customer value based on our customer needs. A small dev shop with 7 people is no longer paying the same as a division of a multinational with 30 people.
Once you’ve reached a certain level of customers, you can start using tools such as Kissmetrics to see whether your pricing segments are matching your customers and how they use your product. The impact on your growth rate will be significant for the business.
It’s also an ongoing process. In our case, we’ve evolved our pricing pricing several times since the experiment above. For instance, we now accept US dollars and Japanese Yen in addition to Euro, so time will tell how those experiments plays out.
In terms of leverage, a few hours a month spent on analyzing and reviewing your pricing may have outsized results.
