What are you selling?
I've been a part of churches that value creativity and some that don't. Since I have a creative bent I tend to gravitate toward the more creative venues. But if we're honest we all tend to gravitate towards the creative side of life. We have become a society that values and possibly over values creativity. Don't get me wrong, I put a very high value on creativity, but I can see in some areas that I over value creativity. 聽 聽I often look on websites for free resources because, free stuff. I may find some websites with some great stuff but since the design is kind of lookin' janky I skip over it. A lot of times it's not really the look of the design that's off putting, it's all the hoops you have to go through to get the free stuff. I'm gonna be real, if I have to click through ads, sign up for newsletters, give you credit card info, promise my firstborn, it just may not be worth a free ebook. 聽 聽I see that far too often in the church world. The church has the greatest free gift in the history of the universe. We give it away or do we? Now, this isn't me railing against the church. This is me advocating for the creative church. How? We follow the example of Jesus. He was ridiculously creative. He gave what he had and asked for no personal gain. There were no conditions, no requirements, no filling out forms of giving of emails, just a free gift. 聽 聽While it's not a bad thing to get an info card from a visitor at your church, it is in fact a great connection tool. But if can feel like you're paying for the free gift that's offered. Whether it's a shirt or a cd, it can feel like a price to pay. Many people don't care and this may seem trivial but it's part of a bigger point. 聽 聽 I believe the church should be the most creative organization on Earth. I also believe that the church should sell nothing that's meant to be free. I'm not against churches selling books, shirts, or CDs but let's not put a price on what should be free. That price can be money, information, or connection. How do we get people connected without offering something material in return? I don鈥檛 know but maybe that鈥檚 where we get need to get creative.
