Places in London to visit that doesn’t feel like the Capital!
Tumblr media
One of London’s best things is that it’s very diverse and doesn’t always look or feel like London. There are plenty of things to do and places in London to visit, but sometimes it can be overwhelming to pick out one particular place. When it comes to travelling in London, it’s easy to go about doing the same old routines and hanging out in our go-to spots. Whether it’s a night out with the girls at a groovy night club or chilling with the boys at a local pub, or strolling around the city with your significant other in usual comfort zones.
Yes, we as humans are creatures of habit, and tend to do the everyday, recurring things. But I think you’ll agree with me when I say that it is good to mix up things every now and then! Luckily, there are places in London to visit, which are full of surprises and fascinating escapes that will give your regular travel routine a good appal. And it’s bound to make you feel you’ve travelled miles away from the city. Here’s a list of unique places in London to visit that might not look or feel like it! Try something out of the box, something inspirational, and it can be in your own back yard!
Little Venice
Where are you? In Venice, Italy
Have you always wanted to visit Venice and take a romantic gondola ride, but never had the chance? Well, the good news is that you can have the same experience right at home in Little Venice! This lovely hidden gem and an eccentric area located in a suburban area of Maida Vale in North London. It is swarming with colourful houseboats and quaint cafes. Nestled between the Great Union Canal and Regent’s Canal. Little Venice is one of the most popular places in London to visit that will make you feel that you’re not in London! Take a boat trip in Little Venice as you cruise down the canal that mimics the Venetian lagoon and the romantic gondola ride.
Kew Gardens
Where are you? In Japan
My next choice is the Kew Gardens, the largest UNESCO World Heritage Site in London and the perfect escape from the city’s rush. The gardens are home to the most diverse collection of living plants globally, and it’s the perfect place for a day out. Discover beautiful Japanese sculpted landscape, the iconic Palm House and its exotic rainforest. I’m certain that a visit to this place will have you imagine that you’re on a getaway in Japan, finding your inner Zen in a peaceful setting.
Vertical Chill
Where are you? Climbing Mt. Everest
Feel like going on an extreme mountaineering experience, but you’re stuck in London? Don’t worry, there’s just the solution to your cold whim! Swap the icy climes of Mt. Everest for Covent Garden instead, where you’ll find, Vertical Chill an imposing tall wall of ice, just waiting to be conquered. It offers the same rush and all the exhilaration without the risk of frostbite and frozen meals.
Ruislip Lido
Where are you? In the Mediterranean
Out of the places in London to visit, Ruislip Lido is my absolute favourite! Well, maybe it’s because I love me some sunshine and this is the perfect place to soak in some rays! Okay, yes, I know that London’s sunshine is not as strong as the Mediterranean’s rays, but you can still find that quiet beach vibes. Ruislip Lido is a large lake surrounded by golden sand, making it a wonderful place for sunbathers, long walks and picnics.
Crystal Palace Park Dinosaur Sculptures
Where are you? In Indonesia
When you’re travelling in London, make sure to pay a visit to the Crystal Palace Park. This will be a superb activity for the kids! This park is a Victorian theme park located in south-east London. However, the park consists of 30 palaeontological statues, five geological displays, and Indo-like landscape. The not-so-accurate collection of concrete lizards are scattered around the park’s lakes, for kids of all ages to enjoy!
Leighton House Museum
Where are you? In Turkey
Yes! You’ll definitely have the Turkish vibes with its bold Middle-Eastern decor, and warm ambience. Leighton House Museum is named as the place ‘where east meets west’. It is located in the heart of Kensington, London. This was once a home of artist Frederic, Lord Leighton and is the product of an artistic vision that ran wild. The museum is filled with paintings of the artist. But it’s the ‘Arab Hall’ that’s the real deal, a large domed room covered in tiles and mosaics will make you forget which continent you’re in.
Shri Swaminarayan Mandir
Where are you? In India
Popularly known as the ‘Neasden Temple’, is a Hindu worship place located at a beautiful setting and is one of the biggest Hindu temples outside India. Shri Swaminarayan Mandir isn’t on every tourist’s ‘must-visit’ list but is one of the best places in London to visit. It was built out of Bulgarian limestone and Italian marble, carved by hand in India before assembling it in London. When you enter the temple, filled with beautiful carvings and shrines of Hindu deities, you’ll instantly feel you’re on Indian soil.

Open-entrances of Under/Over ground.
Tumblr media
I had an unusual experience in London that I have ever experienced in my country, Republic of Korea. It happened when I went to the Lewisham station a few days ago. The way of an entrance of the station was designed was different from the other stations. Unlike the usual station where people had to get in through the card reader machine, there was an open-entrance so that they could get on to the train without paying if they intended. I was so surprised that even though I did not pay, I was able to get in and stand on a platform. I hovered around the station and was uncertain what to do. I was concerned that I had entered the station illegally as I had not paid. So, I went back to the entrance and tried to find a card reader machine. When I was lost like that, I saw three people who ran into the station. One of them ran to train straight away, and other two ran to the card reader machine which I could not find. The train left at the same time when I realised where the card reader machine was. After then, I paid and got on to the train. when I arrived at the destination, West India Quay, there was an open-entrance as well.
This open-entrance station system of finding and paying by oneself could also be considered as a critical design as it makes people to think a problem and have a question. Raby said that the role of critical design is to “stimulate discussion amongst the public designer and industry”(Dunne & Raby, 2001, p.&58). Passing open-entrances could be a trigger act to think paying a fare to people. The act of finding a card reader for paying makes people feel they are paying intentionally. Moreover, it makes people think about using public transportation. It lets people become conscious of paying behaviour. If card reader machines are not at entrances, people need to find card reader machines to pay to go on the Tube. It might lead people to think about act of paying more. There is a similar example with this Idea, it is a non-written tax on receipt in Canada. Thus, people in Canada may think about the tax whenever they buy products.
There must be a big concern of people who steal a ride like a person in my experience. I am concerned that there are people stealing a ride in normal Entrance of under/over ground station as well. When I stand in front of a train, I have considered my ethics l am norms as I had a desire not to pay a transport fee as well. Passing an entrance could be a trigger act to make people to pay a fare. The act of finding a card reader for paying makes people feel they are paying intentionally. It lets people become conscious of paying behaviour. If card reader machines are not at the entrance, people need to find a card reader machine to pay to use the tube. This might encourage people think of the necessity of paying fees for the public facilities. Furthermore, staff often check people to see whether they have paid or not. The Government has already approved this system, there might be a proper reason for it. Those people who use transportation secretly without paying, it probably makes them think not only about their ethical standards but also concern about the penalty.
In addition, I think open-entrances in stations are possibly an advertisement to promote a positive image of ‘London’ itself by using that concern. Using this system (open-entrance) could mean Londoners are ethical people.

UK: Penultimate Elizabeth Line Station Transferred to TfL
UK: Penultimate Elizabeth Line Station Transferred to TfL
Like the nearby Canary Wharf London Underground station, the Elizabeth line station is constructed in a dock, in this case the North Dock of West India Quay. It sits below a five-storey retail and leisure space – which includes a rooftop garden – known as Crossrail Place. The station box is 256 metres long: greater than the height of the nearby One Canada Square, which is one of the UK’s tallest,…

Singapore - Part 1
Day 138 – Auckland to Singapore
Leaving New Zealand behind, I took off from Auckland’s airport in the early afternoon, heading northwest towards Asia. My flight took me over the Tasman Sea, across the orange sand plains of the Australian outback, and across the Java Sea, sprinkled with thousands of Indonesian islands.
As our airplane drew near to Changi airport, I had a spectacular, birds-eye view of hundreds upon hundreds of ships anchored along the Singapore Strait. It was an amazing sight, and I was able to immediately get a snapshot of Singapore’s economic and trading power in the region. Incredibly, at any given time, there are about 1,000 vessels in Singapore’s port, with a ship arriving or departing almost every 2-3 minutes!
Arriving at the contemporary airport, I breezed through customs and onto Singapore’s equally modern transit system, heading west into the city. I arrived in the heart of Chinatown at dusk, emerging onto Pagoda Street, a historic merchant’s district packed with souvenir shops, Chinese restaurants, traditional art and electronics. This vibrant area was packed with people, with food stalls, kiosks and musicians spilling out onto the street in celebration of Chinese New Years. The architecture of the neighbourhood was fascinating, with rows upon rows of technicolour shophouses. Originally built in the early 1800s, these buildings have been restored and repainted in every colour of the rainbow, with large, shuttered windows opening onto the humming streets below.
Tumblr media
Chinatown in Singapore
In every direction I looked I saw red, the official colour of Chinese New Years, and a symbol of luck and good fortune. I wove through the crowds and under hundreds of swinging lanterns, finally locating my hostel for the evening. I hadn’t realized it at the time of booking, but my hostel was actually on the second storey of one of these historic shophouses, with my room looking directly out over Pagoda Street. While this made for some very cool pictures, and a birds-eye view of the festivities below, it also ended up being very loud! Over the rest of the week, earplugs and a loud fan became my best friends – allowing me to get some much-needed shut-eye while the New Years’ revelry carried on late into the night. Despite this small inconvenience, it was very cool to be in Singapore during this time, and get an inside look at the country’s celebrations!
After checking in, I returned to the bustling streets to explore. Although I was tired for my long flight, my senses were jolted awake from the sights, smells and sounds of Chinatown – steaming baskets of dim sum and street food, red envelopes for “lucky money”, a traditional gift for children during New Years, the pungent smell of durian fruit, and a canopy of lanterns criss-crossing the night sky overhead.
I capped off my evening with chicken rice and dim sum at Maxwell Food Centre, one of the many hawker markets that Singapore is famous for. Scattered around the city, these local food halls are home to some Michelin-starred food stalls – with all eats usually under $10! It was a delicious way to start off my travel in Southeast Asia.
Day 139 – Singapore
My first full day started with life admin – getting set up with a new SIM card, a replacement tote bag and new set of reading glasses, after I accidentally stepped on mine when camping in New Zealand! I had to be in Singapore for almost a week because of the timing for my second set of vaccinations – Rabies and Japanese Encephalitis - specific to my next two months in Southeast Asia. Although I wasn’t originally planning to be in Singapore for this long, it was a nice change of pace, as I didn’t feel rushed to see everything at once.
Tumblr media
Chinatown
I wandered around Chinatown and downtown Singapore during that daytime, and began to get an even clearer picture of Singapore’s rich cultural diversity, from the countless options for ethnic cuisine, to numerous places of worship for Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim and Christian faiths – often all within a few blocks. It is clear that Singapore’s culture is an incredible fusion of culture, ethnicity, faith, and language. The blend of Malaysian, Indian, Chinese, Arab and English cultures is on full display at every turn throughout this vibrant “Lion City”.
Tumblr media
Kumquat Plants on Pagoda Street
Walking through the heart of Chinatown, I first explored Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu Shrine in Singapore. It was originally built in 1827 by an Indian trader from Penang, Malaysia, and the Dravidian architecture of the temple was simply stunning. This particular style of temple originated from South India and Sri Lanka, with the architecture consisting of pyramid shaped towers throughout the temple. The Sri Mariamman Temple stands out with its large gopurum (monumental entrance tower). The massive gopurum had numerous tiers, consisting of brightly coloured sculptures of Hindu deities.
Covering my shoulders and taking my shoes off, I walked through the heavy wooden gates to enter the temple. I wandered into a courtyard with the main prayer hall located in the centre, where there were large sculptures of deities such as Rama, Muraga and Krishna. Flower garlands, called “mala” had been placed around the necks of these deities by devotees.
Heading over a few blocks, I walked around the perimeter of Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, a 5-story, modern Buddhist Temple. Built in 2007, the temple gets its name from what is thought to be the tooth of Buddha (recovered from his funeral pyre in India), which is displayed in the temple. Thousands of red lanterns encircled the base of the temple, swinging in the breeze.
Tumblr media
Clarke Quay
I continued onwards to Clarke Quay, located on the banks of the Singapore River. Once the heart of the city and a centre for marine trade and commerce, this neighbourhood is packed with both colonial-era architecture and colourful modern buildings. Visitors to Clarke Quay can still ride the historic “bumboats” that were used to unload wares from around the world. I wandered along the walkways lining the river, taking in the sights of this diverse neighbourhood.
Tumblr media
MICA Building in Clarke Quay
In the late afternoon, I boarded the MTR to head up to Emerald Hill. Located near the famous shopping district of Orchard Road, Emerald Hill is a peaceful conservation area, filled with cobblestoned streets and beautifully preserved Peranakan shop houses, complete with grand entrance gates, sculpted, colourful wall decorations, and wooden window shutters. Beautifully tended gardens with lush, tropical vegetation surrounded the buildings, adding to the beauty of this neighbourhood. In front of some of the homes, there were touches of red decorations, in celebration of the New Year. Kumquat plants were outside the front doors, decorated with red ribbons for luck, their yellow-orange fruit symbolizing prosperity.
Tumblr media
Emerald Hill
A few of the shophouses on Emerald Hill had been converted into trendy patios and cafes, where I stopped at one for a glass of wine, taking in the peaceful ambience of the neighbourhood. As evening fell, I returned to the hubbub of Chinatown, sampling street food on Smith Street and popping in and out of bustling stalls and shops, before making my way home for the evening.
Day 140 – Singapore
It was a hot, humid morning as I boarded the MRT, heading to Eunos Station in Eastern Singapore. My destination was the Joo Chiat, located on the Eastern side of the island, a neighbourhood considered to be one of the early heritage towns in the country. It is also known for being a Peranakan community, an ethnic group descended from marriages between Chinese and Indian men and local Malay or Indonesian women from the Malaysian Archipelago (with Singapore at its base).
Tumblr media
Joo Chiat
In Joo Chiat, the neighbourhood is full of colourful homes decorated with ceramic tiles and sculpted facades. These heritage homes are juxtaposed with trendy bars and modern shops, sprinkled throughout the neighbourhood. I walked along Koon Seng Road to visit the famous stretch of Peranakan shophouses. Built in the 1920s, these 3-storey homes are painted in various pastel shades, with intricate floral patterns decorating the exteriors.
Tumblr media
House of Tan Teng Niah
Because I love a good walk when travelling, I decided to head back towards the city centre on foot, which was a great way for me to get a sense of everyday life in the Singapore.  I stopped in Little India in the early afternoon to visit the house of Tan Teng Niah. Constructed in the early 1900s by a local businessman, this villa is an example of a home of many of Singapore’s ethnic-Chinese business around the turn of the century. When it was restored about 30 years ago, it was painted in a rainbow of vivid colours – with every section of the house in a slightly different hue.  It was quite a striking sight!
Tumblr media
I continued onwards to Kampong Gelam, a neighbourhood which has been home to the Malay, Arab and Burgis communities of Singapore since the 1800s. Today, the area is one of Singapore’s creative hubs, packed with street art, independent boutiques, and trendy pubs and bars. In addition to being a popular hipster hangout, Kampong Glam also is host to many colourful heritage and worship sites. Arab Street, part of Singapore’s Muslim Quarter, is packed with stores selling wares such as Persian Rugs, intricate textiles and Arab teas. It is an area that has fusion of culture, religion and people, and definitely has something for everyone.
Nearby, the spectacular Masjid Sultan Mosque is framed by swaying palm trees. Considered to be the “national mosque” of the city-state, it has a history of over 200 years, with several versions of a mosque having been built on the grounds. The current Masjid Sultan Mosque was built in the 1930s, and has an iconic gold dome, flanked by a tall minaret with a gold roof.
Tumblr media
Masjid Sultan
I stopped for dinner and a Tiger beer at the patio of a jazz café, tucked along an alley with extravagant and street art, people watching and taking in the sights and sounds of Kampong Gelam. Tired from the humidity and my long day of walking, I hopped on the MRT and headed back to my hostel in Chinatown.

Singapore 28/12-1/1/2018
BEFORE YOU GO:
-          Line xanh lá (Green line)- 1,2,3: East West Line
-          Line đỏ (Red line)- 4,5: North South Line
-          Line tím (Purple line)- 6,7: North East Line
-          Line vàng (Yellow line)- 8,9,10: Circle Line
-          Line xanh dương (Blue line)- 11,12: Downtown line
Nhưng bạn chú ý giờ đóng cửa của Ion Sky là 7:45PM (last show on 7:45pm).
1.       HOLLYWOOD
2.       NEW YORK
3.       SCI-FI CITY: 3D Transformer,
4.       ANCIENT EGYPT: 3D Mummy (xác ướp)
5.       THE LOST WORLD: WaterWorld (biểu diễn trên nước- phim trường Mỹ nhân ngư), Jurassic (dòng sông lười- khủng long)
6.       FAR FAR AWAY: 4D Shrek
7.       MADAGASCAR.
-          ST Andrew’s Cathedral (xem đám cưới của Raymond and Charis)
-          IMBIA
-          Chinatown
-          Buddha Tooth Relic Temple (Chùa răng Phật)
-          Apple Store (trên đường Orchard road)
-          Takashimaya
-          Singapore Flyer
-          Marrina Barage (Đập nước)
-          Art Science Museum (phải mua vé 10$)
-          Spectra show (nhạc nước vào buổi tối)- đặc sắc
-          ION SKY
-          Marrina Barrage
-          Botanic garden
-          Macritchie Reservoir (Khu bảo tồn thiên nhiên, viên ngọc xanh giữa lòng Singapore)- TreeTop Walk
-          Little India
-          Katong (văn hóa Peranakan)
-          Suntec city (thành phố phong thủy)
-          Maritime museum

{ pearl of the orient – penang island in 2000 }
penang is a beautiful pearl in my home country.
georgetown, the main city on penang island, has a UNESCO world heritage core area which is well-loved and frequented by tourists all over the world. ( The other UNESCO world heritage site in my home country is in Malacca : Malaysian sensibilities – Malacca old town )
” Designated a UNESCO world heritage site, the historic quarter of George Town in Penang, Malaysia, showcases multi-cultural influences. The region’s heritage can be traced back almost 500 years, when the former British colony was a prominent hub of trade on the Malacca Strait, enabling cultural exchange between Malay, Chinese, Indian and European residents.
As a result, George Town retains its unique character – evidenced by the mix of pastel-painted shophouses and Chinese mansions, European government buildings, diverse religious buildings, festivals, music, food and fortresses. “
in the year 2000, i visited penang & georgetown. it really touched my heart and opened up my senses.
in the year 2019, i.e. 19 years later after my first visit, penang & georgetown have changed a lot, with cars and high-rise apartment buildings dominating the townscape. some say it is a change for the better, as the economy digit is booming. to me, it is a change for the worse, as the charm and beauty of the townscape has been diluted in the name of development ( at all cost ). to me, development should be sensible and sustainable, though this requires the joint effort and collaboration of all parties involved in the development.

penang – a melting-pot of communities and cultures.
Tumblr media
penang – a spicy 200 year old tale of migration, maritime trade and intrigue.
Tumblr media
dragon reaching for the sky, the azure blue sky, but it is unable to fly and leave the temple. it is unwilling to leave the kaleidoscope of penang. it is a penang dragon.
Tumblr media
penang hill railway. the railway links the bottom and top of penang hill. it brings people to explore the penang hill. “expect the unexpected!” the railway told me.
Tumblr media
mid hill station. the wooden steps are built following the gradient of the railway. there is another train waiting for passengers on the other side. the train will guarantee you a nice and pleasant journey to and fro penang hill, just like penang …
” At the top of the hill, the air was buoyant, cool, and exciting to the appetite.”
~ John Turnbull Thomson
Tumblr media
on the way to strawberry hill, you will see a big tree greeting you. “good day, sir!” on peaceful nights, sitting under the tree, you will hear the tree murmuring … “long live great britain!” … it remembered the old colonial days. it is a tree clinging to the past glory.
Tumblr media
the pattern of the wall shows the hardwork of the laborers who piled up the stone works one by one.

others stuck to their ways

and today we have a nation
that is a kaleidoscope
of many things and many people
we all belong to this fabric
having each lent a stitch
to make up a whole
