Rob McElhenney, winner of Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program for "Welcome To Wrexham," poses in the press room during the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on January 15, 2024
Why is no one talking about Welcome to Wrexham, this is bullshit, they pulled a real life Ted Lasso yesterday and no one’s fuckin gushing about it. The Wrexham club is historic, it was bought by an investment firm 15 years ago and sabotaged because they wanted to take the oldest continuously operating football pitch in the world and turn it into apartments but the tiny city collected pennies to buy the team back and pay their players. After 13 years, it was bought by two sports lovers whose main goal was bring joy back to the community and, as of yesterday, after 15 years, they’re back in the league.
If that’s not a Football Cinderella story, idk what is. Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds literally cried when their effort finally paid off. No team owners care as much as they do and the joy they bought back to a town that was fucked over by capitalism should be spread across the world.
If you don’t care about sports or soccer/football at all, care about this team, and watch Welcome to Wrexham. It’s not even about football, it’s about a tiny city’s massive effort that finally paid off. It’s about how sports can unite a community
Not KING CHARLES THE KING OF ENGLAND HIMSELF watching It's Always Sunny and making a joke about it to Rob I swear to GOD I am having a conniption I wheezed at the screen for a solid minute
