Carabao Cup 2nd round fixtures: Newcastle, West Ham, Everton, Leeds, Leicester learn fate | Football | Sport
Dates…
22:20: Remember, all of the fixtures below will be played the week beginning August 26. Clearly one for your diaries – I think that’s the week the Great British Bake Off returns actually.
What stands out?
22:15: I suppose the eye is drawn to the all-Premier League tie between Newcastle and Leicester at St James’ Park.
Everton have a trip to Lincoln, while Aston Villa travel to Crewe. Leeds, who beat Salford tonight, have a home tie with Championship rivals Stoke.
Fulham vs Southampton should be a good fixture as will QPR vs Portsmouth – a tie that I was going to dub the Harry Redknapp derby – but he’s managed everyone so perhaps not.

SOUTH DRAW
PLYMOUTH vs READING
CRAWLEY vs NORWICH
NEWPORT vs WEST HAM
OXFORD vs MILLWALL
WATFORD vs COVENTRY
SWANSEA vs CAMBRIDGE
CARDIFF vs LUTON
BRISTOL ROVERS vs BRIGHTON
CRYSTAL PALACE vs COLCHESTER
FULHAM vs SOUTHAMPTON
BOURNEMOUTH vs FOREST GREEN
SOUTHEND vs MK DONS
QPR vs PORTSMOUTH
We’re ready!
22:05: Give yourselves a pat on the back for your sensational patience… we’re about to get started on the second-round draw.
Gary Neville (home draws) and Paul Robinson (away draw) are ready…
So…
22:02: Anyone seen any good box-sets recently? I’m struggling.
We’ve been promised the draw is coming up after the break. Either than or a 10-minute interview with Salford manager Graham Alexander – who knows at this point.
What’s happening?
22:00: You guessed it – Gary Neville and Paul Robinson are still discussing the Salford vs Leeds match. Not sure there’s much else to discuss lads.
Get the draw started!
Ey up!
21:55: The penalties are nearly over across the country. Crewe beat Middlesbrough, Macclesfield beat Blackpool, Newport knocked out Gillingham, QPR beat Bristol City, Wycombe were beaten by Reading.
I don’t know if you care about any of this – but I’ve started so I’ll finish.
MK Dons beat Wimbledon, Bristol City out after a penalty defeat to QPR, Cambridge beat Brentford. Oh, and in the late fixture Millwall have beaten West Brom 2-1.
Delay…
21:50: Sky Sports have got us right where they want us – glued to their coverage while they analyse the Salford vs Leeds match. I suspect the dozens of viewers aren’t too interested in Mateusz Klich’s 58th-minute goal…

Penalties
21:45: Eight games are heading for penalties after a flurry of late goals. Blackburn were spared the dreaded spot-kicks thanks to a late Rothwell winner.
High-profile ones include Wimbledon vs MK Dons, Middlesbrough vs Crewe and QPR vs Bristol City. What a time to be alive.
Big late goals
21:40: Middlesbrough and Blackburn have both snatched draws in stoppage-time against Crewe and Oldham respectively to force penalty shootouts.
It’s full time and Leeds have knocked over Salford 3-0 to advance to the next round. Marco Bielsa’s side are in the hat!
What happens in a draw?
21:35: Any game that finishes in a draw tonight will be decided on penalties. No extra time or any of that nonsense.
As things stand five games will be decided by penalties – but I very much doubt we’ll be waiting on those to finish before the draw is made.
Who’s in?
21:30: Should you have decided to ignore the rest of this article – unwisely I might add – then you may not be aware that 13 Premier League clubs join the competition at the second-round stage.
Only the sides in Europe miss out – so that means Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Wolves join in the third round.

What’s the plan?
21:25: Well the draw is supposed to take place after the conclusion of this Salford City vs Leeds clash – but knowing the Carabao Cup – honestly anything could happen.
Quite a few scalps exiting the competition Blackburn, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough and Wigan all losing with roughly ten minutes remaining.
Ball numbers
21:20: Why do people have a fascination with the ball numbers for these draws? I’ve seen countless articles on which ball number each side has been assigned.
Is it to know that split-second before the presenter reads it out? Anyway… you can see all the ball numbers if you scroll to the bottom of this page.
Yes, I’m a hypocrite!

Leeds vs Salford
21:15: Anyone watching the the featured game on Sky tonight? Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes were on the TV to discuss their beloved Salford City, who are entertaining Leeds at the Peninsula Stadium tonight.
Not quite gone to plan. Marcelo Bielsa’s Championship side are cruising through to the second-round draw. They currently lead 3-0 with Arsenal loanee Eddie Nketiah among the goals.
Evening…
21:10: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Carabao Cup second-round draw.
Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Wolves will not be involved tonight because of their Champions League and Europa League campaigns.
But 13 Premier League sides WILL learn their fate as the weird and wonderful world of a Carabao Cup draw unfolds at around 21:45.
Now we’ve not got the bizarre and unlikely double act of John Barnes and Ray Parlour drawing the balls at a Morrisons in north-west London – but it should be good nonetheless.

When is the Carabao Cup draw?

However, the draw will once again be regionalised into north and south sections to reduce travel times for supporters.

So, in order to get everything done before then, the second round fixtures will take place in the week commencing Monday August 26.

There are concerns about the back story of this character, but the hippies will certainly find something to complain about.
Next we have the information about the struggles faced by small game developers trying to generate traction in today’s market place. Independent game developers are producing some interesting content back due to the market place they struggle to survive and remain in the market place. We also ask our resident developer about his experiences and how he dealt with them.
Then we take a moment to learn about a horny dinosaur from China. Oops, sorry, a horned dinosaur from China, called the Auroraceratops, cousin of the Triceratops. Perfect for the individual in the market for a pet that is a little bit different. This beautiful little creature is adorable and a herbivore, with currently eighty examples having been found. Garth Crooks
Garth Crooks
Garth Crooks
Premier League champions Manchester City put six past Huddersfield, Brighton recorded another famous victory over Manchester United, and Chelsea edged a five-goal thriller at dwelling to London rivals Arsenal.
Elsewhere, Harry Kane ended his August aim drought as Tottenham beat Fulham, and Everton’s summer season signing Richarlison scored once more of their win over Southampton.
Bournemouth and Watford continued their profitable begins towards West Ham and Burnley respectively, whereas Leicester bounced again from an opening-day defeat to beat Wolves, and Cardiff earned a primary level of the marketing campaign against Newcastle.
However who did sufficient to make my group of the week? Learn my alternatives after which decide your individual XI.
Goalkeeper – Jordan Pickford
Jordan Pickford: What a put it aside was by Jordan Pickford to disclaim Southampton striker Danny Ings. The Everton goalkeeper struggled to carry an preliminary shot from Cedric Soares, although it did not appear too sizzling to deal with, however reacted brilliantly.
Afterwards, Saints boss Mark Hughes insisted the England keeper ought to have been despatched off for his involvement in a 50-50 contest, which he gained, although I can not bear in mind Hughes ever pulling out of such a deal with in his lengthy, illustrious profession.
I do not know why he would count on Pickford to both. Poor present, Mark. Poor present.
Do you know? Pickford made three saves within the win towards Southampton.
Defenders – Shane Duffy, Steve Cook dinner, Benjamin Mendy
Shane Duffy: Final week, Brighton supervisor Chris Hughton was issuing verbal warnings to his gamers following their defeat at Watford. This week, the supervisor was stuffed with reward for them. On the coronary heart of Brighton’s victory over Manchester United was centre-back Shane Duffy.
The defender was excellent, significantly having misplaced his confederate Lewis Dunk by harm. Conversely, I do not assume I’ve seen Eric Bailly or Victor Lindelof play as badly in central defence as I did towards the Seagulls.
How can Manchester United look so poor in such vital positions at this stage of the season? It is horrifying.
Do you know? Duffy scored his first Premier League aim in addition to making extra blocks than another participant (two) in Brighton’s 3-2 win towards Manchester United.
Steve Cook dinner: Loyalty and continuity appear to be the secret for Bournemouth supervisor Eddie Howe, which is why it’s completely comprehensible he has caught with Steve Cook dinner – a Bournemouth participant since their days in League One.
The centre-back’s presence terrified West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna into utilizing strong-arm ways and, but, he nonetheless couldn’t cease the Cherries defender from getting his head to the ball and planting the profitable aim.
I feel it is again to the drafting board for West Ham supervisor Manuel Pellegrini.
Do you know? Cook dinner made a team-high 11 clearances for Bournemouth on the London Stadium, whereas additionally netting the profitable aim for the Cherries.
Benjamin Mendy: It’s no coincidence that Benjamin Mendy’s return to first-team motion with Manchester Metropolis is having a direct impact on Sergio Aguero’s scoring powers.
The complete-back has a transparent skill to get into superior positions utilizing his tempo and energy, whereas Aguero is benefiting from Mendy’s pinpoint crosses as a result of they’re delivered early.
There may be nothing worse than a full-back who takes three touches to get management of the ball when one ought to be sufficient.
Do you know? Mendy delivered 12 crosses from open play towards Huddersfield – probably the most of any participant this weekend.
Midfielders – Gylfi Sigurdsson, David Silva, James Maddison, Marcos Alonso
Gylfi Sigurdsson: Gylfi Sigurdsson did not set the world alight for Everton beneath Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce final season, after a big-money transfer to Goodison. Nevertheless, this season – beneath Marco Silva – he would possibly.
The Iceland worldwide was excellent towards Southampton and, for me, the most effective participant on the park. The place simply behind the striker appears to convey the most effective out of Sigurdsson and, on this event, Everton as effectively.
I simply hope Everton followers deal with Silva higher than they handled Allardyce.
Do you know? No participant created extra probabilities this weekend than Sigurdsson (six).
David Silva: After watching Manchester Metropolis demolish Huddersfield at Etihad Stadium, orchestrated by David Silva, it left me in little doubt that back-to-back Premier League titles is severely on.
Having seen Manchester United’s shambolic efficiency at Brighton, I feel Liverpool are the one group who can cease Metropolis.
United boss Jose Mourinho can say Manchester Metropolis’s fly-on-the-wall documentary lacks class however Metropolis appear to ooze class with each transfer, and the classiest of all of them is David Silva.
Do you know? The Spaniard scored his first direct free-kick aim for Manchester Metropolis of their 6-1 win towards Huddersfield.
James Maddison: I did not see numerous James Maddison within the Championship however I used to be impressed together with his efficiency towards Manchester United within the opening sport of the season.
The midfielder appeared to get his reward every week later towards Wolves together with his first Premier League aim, although I used to be a bit perturbed by Jamie Vardy’s problem on Matt Doherty.
Leicester supervisor Claude Puel claimed his centre-forward’s problem, which resulted in Vardy receiving his marching orders, was merely over-enthusiastic. Please! Scoring a aim and waving your shirt over your head is over-enthusiastic. Going right into a deal with at breakneck velocity and making contact just under the opponent’s knee is reckless.
Do you know? Maddison scored together with his solely shot of the sport. The Leicester participant has been immediately concerned in 5 targets in his previous six dwelling league video games (three targets, two assists), as many as within the earlier 24.
Marcos Alonso: It is a very totally different Chelsea beneath Maurizio Sarri than it was beneath Antonio Conte. For a begin, the Blues performed components of the sport as if they’d forgotten the way to defend.
It isn’t that way back that Chelsea had the most effective defensive file within the league and, with higher ending from Arsenal, the Gunners might have gone on to win this London derby.
Thankfully for Chelsea, Marcos Alonso was readily available to use the crowning glory to a really entertaining soccer match. Final week, towards Manchester Metropolis, I mentioned Arsenal would do effectively to complete within the high six. This efficiency towards Chelsea was a lot improved. The truth is, they deserved a draw. However I’ve not modified my place.
Do you know? Alonso supplied the help for Chelsea’s opener towards Arsenal, earlier than scoring their third in a 3-2 victory.
Forwards – Callum Wilson, Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane
Callum Wilson: Callum Wilson has scored on 5 separate events towards West Ham and, after his newest efficiency towards the Hammers, I can see why. The best way he breezed previous Fabian Balbuena and Pablo Zabaleta was scary from a Hammers perspective.
Pellegrini was so shocked, as he was dissatisfied, that West Ham followers left the stadium with 10 minutes to play. He does have a degree. An terrible lot can occur on a soccer subject in 10 minutes – particularly if the followers play their half.
That mentioned, this was a rocky Hammers horror present.
Do you know? Wilson has scored in three successive league video games for the primary time since April 2015, when the Cherries have been in Championship.
Sergio Aguero: The Buenos Aires murderer is at it once more. Sergio Aguero was at his lethal greatest towards a Huddersfield aspect who appeared outgunned, outclassed and left for useless in a 6-1 drubbing.
It additionally seems like the customarily flamable relationship between supervisor Pep Guardiola and the Argentina worldwide is again to its greatest.
Aguero left the pitch to a standing ovation after scoring his 13th hat-trick for Metropolis. As he left the pitch, Guardiola sealed Aguero’s efficiency with a kiss. It does not get higher than that.
Do you know? The Argentine striker scored a hat-trick towards the Terriers from simply 4 pictures on the right track.
Harry Kane: So, Harry Kane has laid the August ghost to relaxation. Lastly, Spurs followers don’t must trouble themselves anymore with this totally ineffective statistic.
To be brutally trustworthy, Kane ought to have had a hat-trick however the aim he did rating was so unbelievably superb I did not care concerning the ones he missed.
Spurs are wanting good once more and that is all that issues proper now. Think about what it is going to be like when the brand new stadium is prepared.
Do you know? Kane’s aim was his first Premier League aim within the month of August. It took the England ahead 15 video games, 1065 minutes and 49 pictures.
Now it is your flip
You’ve got seen my picks this week. However who would you go for?
The Crooks of the matter…
Raheem Sterling’s glorious end towards Arsenal final week opened up an attention-grabbing debate.
The Manchester Metropolis star was greeted all through the match with boos and jeers, a characteristic that has adopted the younger man’s profession since his audacious departure from Liverpool, and it prompted my dear friend and BBC colleague Ian Wright to ask the query ‘why?’
I’ve met Raheem and interviewed him on quite a few events for Soccer Focus and, I need to say, I have not met many younger males who’ve impressed me fairly as a lot.
Other than his well mannered manner and welcoming smile, he possesses the identical steeliness I noticed in Cristiano Ronaldo as an 18-year-old.
Cristiano Ronaldo joined Manchester United in the summertime of 2003
Each males have been subjected to extraordinary abuse from followers through the years, and far of that vitriol has been fuelled by many components. I bear in mind in 1998 when Diego Simeone did simply sufficient to impress David Beckham to react and get despatched off towards Argentina. England went out of the World Cup due to their incapability to take penalties – and never as a result of the midfielder was despatched off. Beckham, nonetheless, carried the can.
The abuse that adopted the Manchester United star was outrageous. Related punishment was meted out throughout John Terry’s lengthy and distinguished profession at Chelsea. The purpose is that soccer followers, so long as I can bear in mind, have at all times harboured a determine of hate. Somebody to scream and shout at and others to like and to hate. It is what defines us.
I used to be prompted by how love can so rapidly flip to hate in soccer once I lately met Sol Campbell. I had the pleasure of sharing a couple of moments with this soccer large at Stamford Bridge, shortly earlier than Chelsea took on Arsenal. No doubt probably the greatest defenders this nation has produced, he was subjected to probably the most terrible abuse by Spurs followers when he left for Arsenal in the summertime of 2001.
I bear in mind Sol being bemused by the sheer depth of their venom – nonetheless the interval was greatest described by a Tottenham fan when he mentioned: “We hate him a lot as a result of we cherished him a lot.”
Raheem Sterling is a Premier League winner with Manchester Metropolis
And that’s the level. Hate, in soccer, can so usually be wrapped up in secret admiration of a participant or a group.
What Sterling ought to do is take the abuse he’s receiving as an infinite praise.
Firstly, it will not final and, secondly, solely the easiest gamers – with the odd exception – ever obtain such consideration.

These two are in, but who else makes Garth Crooks' team of the week?
Premier League champions Manchester City put six past Huddersfield, Brighton recorded another famous victory over Manchester United, and Chelsea edged a five-goal thriller at home to London rivals Arsenal.
Elsewhere, Harry Kane ended his August goal drought as Tottenham beat Fulham, and Everton’s summer signing Richarlison scored again in their win over Southampton.
Bournemouth and Watford continued their winning starts against West Ham and Burnley respectively, while Leicester bounced back from an opening-day defeat to beat Wolves, and Cardiff earned a first point of the campaign against Newcastle.
But who did enough to make my team of the week? Read my selections and then pick your own XI.
<!–
Goalkeeper – Jordan Pickford
<!–
Jordan Pickford: What a save it was by Jordan Pickford to deny Southampton striker Danny Ings. The Everton goalkeeper struggled to hold an initial shot from Cedric Soares, though it didn’t seem too hot to handle, but reacted brilliantly.
Afterwards, Saints boss Mark Hughes insisted the England keeper should have been sent off for his involvement in a 50-50 contest, which he won, though I can’t remember Hughes ever pulling out of such a tackle in his long, illustrious career.
I don’t know why he would expect Pickford to either. Poor show, Mark. Poor show.
Defenders – Shane Duffy, Steve Cook, Benjamin Mendy
<!–
Shane Duffy: Last week, Brighton manager Chris Hughton was issuing verbal warnings to his players following their defeat at Watford. This week, the manager was full of praise for them. At the heart of Brighton’s victory over Manchester United was centre-back Shane Duffy.
The defender was outstanding, particularly having lost his accomplice Lewis Dunk through injury. Conversely, I don’t think I’ve seen Eric Bailly or Victor Lindelof play as badly in central defence as I did against the Seagulls.
How can Manchester United look so poor in such important positions at this stage of the season? It’s frightening.
Steve Cook: Loyalty and continuity seem to be the name of the game for Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe, which is why it is perfectly understandable he has stuck with Steve Cook – a Bournemouth player since their days in League One.
The centre-back’s presence terrified West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna into using strong-arm tactics and, yet, he still could not stop the Cherries defender from getting his head to the ball and planting the winning goal.
I think it’s back to the drawing board for West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini.
Benjamin Mendy: It is no coincidence that Benjamin Mendy’s return to first-team action with Manchester City is having a direct effect on Sergio Aguero’s scoring powers.
The full-back has a clear ability to get into advanced positions using his pace and power, while Aguero is benefiting from Mendy’s pinpoint crosses because they are delivered early.
There is nothing worse than a full-back who takes three touches to get control of the ball when one should be enough.
Midfielders – Gylfi Sigurdsson, David Silva, James Maddison, Marcos Alonso
<!–
Gylfi Sigurdsson: Gylfi Sigurdsson didn’t set the world alight for Everton under Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce last season, after a big-money move to Goodison. However, this season – under Marco Silva – he might.
The Iceland international was outstanding against Southampton and, for me, the best player on the park. The position just behind the striker seems to bring the best out of Sigurdsson and, on this occasion, Everton as well.
I just hope Everton fans treat Silva better than they treated Allardyce.
David Silva: After watching Manchester City demolish Huddersfield at Etihad Stadium, orchestrated by David Silva, it left me in little doubt that back-to-back Premier League titles is seriously on.
Having seen Manchester United’s shambolic performance at Brighton, I think Liverpool are the only team who can stop City.
United boss Jose Mourinho can say Manchester City’s fly-on-the-wall documentary lacks class but City seem to ooze class with every move, and the classiest of them all is David Silva.
James Maddison: I didn’t see a lot of James Maddison in the Championship but I was impressed with his performance against Manchester United in the opening game of the season.
The midfielder seemed to get his reward a week later against Wolves with his first Premier League goal, though I was a bit perturbed by Jamie Vardy’s challenge on Matt Doherty.
Leicester manager Claude Puel claimed his centre-forward’s challenge, which resulted in Vardy receiving his marching orders, was merely over-enthusiastic. Please! Scoring a goal and waving your shirt over your head is over-enthusiastic. Going into a tackle at breakneck speed and making contact just below the opponent’s knee is reckless.
Marcos Alonso: This is a very different Chelsea under Maurizio Sarri than it was under Antonio Conte. For a start, the Blues played parts of the game as though they had forgotten how to defend.
It’s not that long ago that Chelsea had the best defensive record in the league and, with better finishing from Arsenal, the Gunners could have gone on to win this London derby.
Fortunately for Chelsea, Marcos Alonso was on hand to apply the finishing touch to a very entertaining football match. Last week, against Manchester City, I said Arsenal would do well to finish in the top six. This performance against Chelsea was much improved. In fact, they deserved a draw. But I’ve not changed my position.
Forwards – Callum Wilson, Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane
<!–
Callum Wilson: Callum Wilson has scored on five separate occasions against West Ham and, after his latest performance against the Hammers, I can see why. The way he breezed past Fabian Balbuena and Pablo Zabaleta was scary from a Hammers perspective.
Pellegrini was so surprised, as he was disappointed, that West Ham fans left the stadium with 10 minutes to play. He does have a point. An awful lot can happen on a football field in 10 minutes – especially if the fans play their part.
That said, this was a rocky Hammers horror show.
Sergio Aguero: The Buenos Aires assassin is at it again. Sergio Aguero was at his deadly best against a Huddersfield side who looked outgunned, outclassed and left for dead in a 6-1 drubbing.
It also looks like the often combustible relationship between manager Pep Guardiola and the Argentina international is back to its best.
Aguero left the pitch to a standing ovation after scoring his 13th hat-trick for City. As he left the pitch, Guardiola sealed Aguero’s performance with a kiss. It doesn’t get better than that.
Harry Kane: So, Harry Kane has laid the August ghost to rest. Finally, Spurs fans do not need to bother themselves anymore with this utterly useless statistic.
To be brutally honest, Kane should have had a hat-trick but the goal he did score was so unbelievably glorious I didn’t care about the ones he missed.
Spurs are looking good again and that’s all that matters right now. Imagine what it will be like when the new stadium is ready.
Now it’s your turn
You’ve seen my picks this week. But who would you go for?
Pick your Team of the Week
Pick your XI from our list and share with your friends.

The Crooks of the matter…
Raheem Sterling’s excellent finish against Arsenal last week opened up an interesting debate.
The Manchester City star was greeted throughout the match with boos and jeers, a feature that has followed the young man’s career since his audacious departure from Liverpool, and it prompted my dear friend and BBC colleague Ian Wright to ask the question ‘why?’
I’ve met Raheem and interviewed him on a number of occasions for Football Focus and, I must say, I haven’t met many young men who have impressed me quite as much.
Apart from his polite demeanour and welcoming smile, he possesses the same steeliness I saw in Cristiano Ronaldo as an 18-year-old.
<!–
Both men have been subjected to extraordinary abuse from fans over the years, and much of that vitriol has been fuelled by many factors. I remember in 1998 when Diego Simeone did just enough to provoke David Beckham to react and get sent off against Argentina. England went out of the World Cup because of their inability to take penalties – and not because the captain was sent off. Beckham, nevertheless, carried the can.
The abuse that followed the Manchester United star was outrageous. Similar punishment was meted out during John Terry’s long and distinguished career at Chelsea. The point is that football fans, as long as I can remember, have always harboured a figure of hate. Someone to scream and shout at and others to love and to hate. It’s what defines us.
I was prompted by how love can so quickly turn to hate in football when I recently met Sol Campbell. I had the pleasure of sharing a few moments with this soccer giant at Stamford Bridge, shortly before Chelsea took on Arsenal. Without doubt one of the best defenders this country has produced, he was subjected to the most awful abuse by Spurs fans when he left for Arsenal in the summer of 2001.
I remember Sol being bemused by the sheer intensity of their venom – however the period was best described by a Tottenham fan when he said: “We hate him so much because we loved him so much.”
<!–
And that is the point. Hate, in football, can so often be wrapped up in secret admiration of a player or a team.
What Sterling should do is take the abuse he is receiving as an enormous compliment.
Firstly, it won’t last and, secondly, only the very best players – with the odd exception – ever receive such attention.
Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Premier League: 10 things to look out for in Boxing Day and holiday fixtures
Leicester hope to party like its 1963, Liverpool must find a way to stop Joe Allen tallying and it is eight years since Phil Browns notorious Hull City team talk
1) Leicester without Vardy aim to defendant like its 1963
Every year for more than half a century kinfolks have been hoping for a repeat of the Boxing Day fun of 1963, when the 10 top-flight fixtures caused a record tally of 66 objectives. We cant get an exact repeat of that this year because half of the teams who were in the First Division back then are now in the lower conferences( although, as it happens, Ipswich and Fulham are meeting in the Championship this Boxing Day so Mick McCarthy could point to progress if his team work better than the 10 -1 demolish that Jackie Milburns side suffered against Fulham in 63 ). But this years Boxing Day fixture roster has thrown up an identical pairing to the 63 planned, as Leicester host Everton. Back then, Everton, rather than Leicester, were the defending champions and they lost 2-0 in what turned out to be the lowest tallying accord on that record-breaking date. Both Leicesters points were scored by Ken Keyworth, who we are going to describe as the Jamie Vardy of his time if we can also stipulates that we are just necessitate he was his crews most prolific striker. Vardy, judgment you, has not been prolific this season but he did score a hat-trick in his last home coincide and would have been hoping to resume where he left off if he had not started and rushed into that undertake on Mame Biram Diouf at Stoke . His expulsion saves Evertons sluggish center apology from having to cope with his hasten, but Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani could pose different objections. Leicester could find their other danglings more problematic: the association did not draft adequate defensive comprise in the summer so the absences of Robert Huth and Christian Fuchs generate Everton an opportunity to recover from their Merseyside derby disappointment and retaliate the defeat of 63. PD
Vardy to serve three-match ban after cherry-red poster appeal is spurned Lukaku to signed new Everton deal but may leave in summer Raiola Leicester striving but Man City wrote book on bad claim apologies
2) The omen are good for Liverpool against Stoke
This is this years other recite of the 1963 Boxing Day planned, or rather it would have been if this years coincide has not been able to been pushed back to 27 December. Fifty-three years ago a 6-1 residence succes over Stoke helped Liverpool on their style to their first top-flight entitlement in more than two decades and, eventually, a splendid period of domestic preeminence. The similarities are obvious. Right? Well, makes witness what Joe Allen has to say about that. The Welshman returns to Anfield in splendid, free-scoring structure and will undoubtedly be instrumental in Stokes attempt to gain their first league acquire at Liverpool since 1959. But Glen Johnson could be even more important, and so too will Bruno Martins Indi, who has become the fulcrum of Stokes defence since to intervene in the fraternity in the summer, especially with Ryan Shawcross still apparently struggling for maximum fitness. Meanwhile, if Daniel Sturridge is capable of lasting 90 times, then he should start for Liverpool in place of Roberto Firmino, who has examined in serious need of a remainder in recent activities. PD

3) Arsenal and West Brom hope not to fuel old-fashioned arguments
For a while it looked like this, at last, “wouldve been” the season of goodwill towards Arsne Wenger. But then his team lost two tough away competitors in a row and lo, Arsenal love will again spend Christmas Day bickering about their manager and the direction he plays his version of monopoly. The second half of Wengers reign at Arsenal has not really about property development, there has also been some squad house, but the issues to remains as to whether the manager has laid sturdy enough mental feet. Beating West Bromwich Albion at home would not resolve that debate but it would at least give Arsenal fans the gift of momentary pause from in-fighting. Back in 1963 the squabbling was all in the West Brom camp before their Boxing Day meeting with north London adversaries: their musicians went on impres in the run-up to the game in protest against being told by their manager, Jimmy Hagan, that they were required to qualify for it in shorts despite the freakishly cold weather( it is not clear whether the freezing maladies likewise stopped naked headbutting but Hagan eventually reached an understanding with the players, who went on to draw 4-4 with Spurs ). The most recent past provisions a better arrow for West Broms see to the Emirates, of course. And judging by West Broms approaches to their large-hearted away tournaments so far this season, we can count on Pulis trying to make this a difficult match for Arsenal and a harrowing watch for everyone. PD
zil acquires owned more than you are able to imagine
4) Moyes and co could realize life difficult for Manchester United
Let us stop with the 1963 similarities now. In knowledge, let us not mention the past at all, lest we bring a tear to the eye of David Moyes. But if “were supposed to” mention the Scots previous events at Old Trafford, let us concentrate on the winnings he enjoyed there during his 11 years as Everton manager. Eh? Oh well. Tell you what, give us exactly look back to Sunderlands jubilant last coincide, a 1-0 succes over Watford motivated by Adnan Januzaj , who, alas, is ineligible for the forthcoming equal against his parent association. Poor Moyes cannot catch a terminate when Old Trafford is committed. But his occupation is to reach his own luck no matter the feeble side he is dealt, and on Monday that will entail choosing a suitable substitution for Januzaj. Hazards are Moyes will plump for John OShea. Dont laugh! The Irishman did well in a back three when Sunderland prepared life tough for Chelsea a fortnight ago and redeploying that structure seems like Moyess better hazard of inflicting squalor on Manchester United backers, again. PD
Man Utd close in on Benficas Lindelof to bolster excuse Ibrahimovic: the older I get, the very best I get, like red wine
5) Remember of Brown team talk furnish light-footed aid to stern test
It is accurately eight years since Hull satisfied Manchester City on Boxing Day 2008 and Phil Brown memorably extradited his half-time squad talk on the lurch, with his team already 4-0 down. I thought it was nice and cold and I saw I would keep the sons alive since they are searched as if they were dead, he articulated, and the novel move kind of toiled they outlined the second half 1-1, and video games pointed 5-1. City were in the bottom three at the time, while Hull were sixth; by seasons culminate City were 10 th and Hull, who prevailed only one more league recreation, scaped relegation by a extent. Manchester City, who at the time had not finished in the top four since 1978, have just been failed to do so formerly since, when they came fifth in 2010. The knee trauma preserved by Pablo Zabaleta in the win over Arsenal means that no survivors of the 2008 activity will appear in this one Vincent Kompany and Joe Hart also played that day and are still on Citys payroll but Hull may find their enterprise is no less formidable. SB
Snodgrass repudiates new Hull contract and targets January leaving Tour: I require Manchester City to be bigger than Manchester United
6) Carroll could have a whale of a time in Swansea
Swansea have been so ghoulish away no, that is not the right parole s o silly away that it is easy to forget that they have been relatively fearsome in their last-place two dwelling coincides, beating both Crystal Palace and Sunderland. So they are certainly capable of thumping West Ham. But that does not seem likely, as Slaven Bilics side have shown evidence of tightening up in recent activities and, in Andy Carroll, have a forwards who could wreak havoc against the softest central defence in the Premier League( again ). PD
West Ham do not want to sell units top player Payet, mentions Bilic

7) When will Contes Chelsea stop winning?
With Diego Costa and NGolo Kant postponed, is the end nigh for Chelseas acquiring loped? Michy Batshuayi hopes not. Costas one-match censor holds the Belgian striker, for whom Chelsea paid 33 m in the summer, an opportunity to prove his worth. It is up to Bournemouth, meanwhile, had demonstrated that without Kants protection Chelseas defence is far more vulnerable. Bournemouth ought to have wobbly on the road so far this season but they prevailed at Stamford Bridge last-place word and Eddie Howe, and fans of a close entitle race, would welcome a repetition of that outcome this year. PD
Conte targets Bakayoko and Sidib after 60 m Oscar windfall Chelsea to rebuff loan volunteers for deputy striker Batshuayi
8) A gather of forestalling finishers at St Marys
Forget about Mauricio Pochettino: what these support team have in common is an infuriating wastefulness. Both create a lot of chances, both tend to miss the majority of members of them. Southampton established signals of improvement in their last parallel, that 3-1 winning at Bournemouth , when they made a sharpness that they had often shortfall. They will probably need to produce that again, and repeat the severity and speeding they depicted at Bournemouth, if they are to foist a third subsequent away defeat on Tottenham Hotspur. PD

9) Palace seek to stop away decompose at Vicarage Road
Three demolishes in their last-place four recreations have looked Watford slip from seventh to 12 th, but if the feeling of uneasily looking over their shoulders is an disagreeable originality to them, it has become regrettably familiar to a Palace side which, after losing eight of their last-place 10 tournament plays( aggregate score 14 -2 4) and sacking Alan Pardew, could drop into the bottom three for the first time since August should they lose at Vicarage Road. Last years 1-0 acquire there called during that part of Pardews tenure when Palace was most impressive away from home it was their 11 th win in 14 away competitions and although they required a second-half sanction to assure it, their supremacy was gently evident throughout. Afterwards Pardew talked happily about how his back were inherently suited to success on their wanders weve get good musicians for an away team because weve get tempo but though they have not forgotten how to sprint, more recently their running away from dwelling has sometimes been of the headless chicken smorgasbord. Discus of scampers, they return on one of two success in their last-place 19 away competitions, and three in the last calendar year. And their away fixtures are not going to get any easier: they have already saw every other member of the bottom seven( they are the only unit yet to have hosted any member of that group ). With Pardew led, the time has come for a return to triumphing aways. SB
Middlesbrough to rival Palace in pursuit of Villas Gestede Palace sack manager Pardew after disastrous operate of results
10) Home consolations clothing Defour as Burnley face big week
Since half-time in the televised 4-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion last month, which he started, Burnley have played 315 hours( plus strikes) of football away from Turf Moor and Steven Defour has been on the pitch for six of them. The Belgian had nevertheless started every home competition he has been available for this season, and is likely to return to the team for the visit of Middlesbrough, the first of two crucial-looking dwelling activities for the Clarets over the holiday period, with Sunderland due on New Years Eve. Thrown that they have won 16 spots at home and precisely one away, it could be argued that Burnley only really play when on their own floor, but in Defours case it is literally true-life. There has furthermore been a statistical decline in his recitals: there used to be three assists and one bright destination in his first five figures, but none of either in his last seven. Sean Dyche has said that Defour is yet to adapt to the English game. Its a different tour through the Premier League. Its physical, its tight, he told the Lancashire Telegraph last week. Ive assured him play at Anderlecht, its a different ball game there. Its slow, its methodical, with pockets of good tempo. The Premier League is hard and fast and the stats is proof that. Its find the appropriate balance to him understanding the americans and understanding the Premier League. Word from Belgium is that the participate is becoming frustrated with life in England, but active involvement in the next weeks two critical fixtures could help induce his a happier brand-new time.

PD

PD

PD

SB

PD

PD

SB
