A very overdue cql/mdzs fic rec list

I am so sorry this took me so long Axel! The pandemic has really done a number on my time-management skills and things like this often fall behind :/

The Wei Wuxian makes a wish series by natcat5

My attempt at a summary: this is a madoka magica AU (which i had not watched prior to reading this fic). Cultivators, in this universe, are created when a teenager makes a wish to the creature named Kyubey, which than grants them their wish and the power to fight witches, strange and destructive creatures of despair that lure people into their labyrinths. Wei Wuxian, at the beginning of the story is not a cultivator, but his friends are and so is the mysterious new student at his school, lan wangji, who follows him everywhere and seems to be obsessed with preventing him from making a contract.

My comment: my attempt at a summary does not do this story justice and is really just a setup. Honestly i cannot put into words how much I loved this story. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It made me laugh, it made me cry for entire chapters, it drew me into it's world so much that I freaking dreamed about it! (I'm not kidding, I really did) Honestly, this fic deserves so much more attention than it is currently getting. Not only is the plot expertly crafted, with reveals that shock you and leave you reading, but the author also just gets the characters. The best thing an AU can do, in my opinion, is take familiar characters, put them in unfamiliar situations and then manage to make the way they react believable. And this AU nails that! The conclusion and the choices that Wei wuxian and lan Wangji make in the end felt exactly right. Not to mention, it has a stellar ensemble cast! Everyone is here (except Xichen sadly and I kind of think it is deliberate because without him, Lan Wangji lacks a support system). Again, I cannot recommend this story enough. It is, without doubt, my favourite fic series in this entire fandom. (Caution however: Do read the warnings in the tags and notes and take them seriously. They are there for a very good reason.)

Author’s summary: Lan Xichen is in isolation. Wei Wuxian visits him. Together they find their way back to happiness, to clarity and to home.

My comment: This one focuses on both Lan Xichen’s and Wei Wuxian’s issues and lets them resolve them together. I am such a fan of their characterisations in this fic, as well as Lan Wangji’s even though he is not the focus. I love it when non-romantic relationships are the focus of fics and especially when they are central to the character’s resolving their own issues and moving forward in life and that is exactly what happens here.

Author’s summary: Lan Zhan is sad and not hungry; Lan Xichen asks Nie Mingjue to help him.

My comment: This one is a really short and sweet read about how Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue parent the their younger brothers. I just really liked how the author portrayed todler Lan Zhan, as well as these two teenagers doing their best to be the parents that both he and Nie huaisang lack.

Night Music by Manogahela

Author’s summary: There is a music that plays in the night at Cloud Recess....but there isn't suppose to be. Lan Xichen investigates the mysterious dizi music that can be heard from the Jingshi at night following the Siege of the Burial mounds.

My comment: I absolutely adored this one, mainly for two reasons: 1. I love an outsider perspective and Lan Xichen’s, at this point and with his limited knowledge is absolutely wonderful. First, he isn’t even sure is what he thinks is happening really is happening and when he is sure, his feelings are, understandably very conflicted. 2. The author’s style compliments this fic so well. Since most of it happens at night and Xichen isn’t entirely sure that he can trust his senses, there is a certain dreamlike quality to it that the author writes beautifully. This fic is part one in a series. Part two is a WIP, but also very much worth the read!

My summary: In which Wei Wuxian is whipped within an inch of his life by Madam Yu when he is fourteen and comes to stay at the cloud recesses. He and Lan Zhan become friends.

My comment: My summary once again does not do this fic justice. Because it is so much more than just that. It’s such a beautful exploration of friendship and love and bodily autonomy. Wei Wuxian has a lot to work through in this fic, but really, so has Lan Zhan who has the opportunity to make friends at a much more mellow pace than in the novel/show and panics a little less because of it. The war still happens but has much less dire consequences. All in all, this fic left me with a wonderful warm feeling in my chest.

Author’s summary: One of the more timid-looking posts, in pale greens and creams and yellows, says Hello, I'm managing to be fairly high functioning right now but I'm really not doing as well as it may appear, and Lan Zhan feels as if someone sneaked into his mind and read his most secret thoughts, the ones he's never even dared to admit to himself.

(In which Lan Zhan, to his own dismay, finds himself with the help of the most obnoxious, cheerful, cheesy self-care instagram account known to men.)

My comment: Listen, I have a complicated relationship with fics that depict mental health struggles in characters. They are all so incredibly valid and I’m glad they exist (every single one of them, no matter if i like them or not) but due to the fact that they tend to come from the author projecting their own issues onto characters (which is NOT a bad thing! that is what fanfic is for!) they are often hit-and-miss when it comes to characterisation. But this story ... it just GETS Lan Wangji. If someone told me a scenario in a modern AU that leads to him developing an anxiety disorder and depression, this is what I would have come up with. Because let’s be real, Lan Wangji is a perfectionist to boot, insanely competitive and needs to live up to his family’s expectations, while also not having much of an emotional support system outside of his brother and uncle. That’s a dangerous cocktail in the modern world and just screams of a burnout waiting to happen. So Lan Wangji, off to university, living alone in a strange city for the frst time, spends all his time in a carefully calculated study routine but slowly realises that the path he set out on was not one he chose because he liked it but simply the one that was laid out for him by his background and family, which then leads to him questioning the reason behind what he does. That reads as incredibly real to me. A good AU, in my opinion, takes the characters and their inherent characteristics and lets them meet new and unique challenges that they never would have encountered in canon, which then leads to new and interesting character developement. And this AU manages that perfectly! (Plus, if you are a university student like me who sometimes suffers from crushing anxiety about the path they chose in life, this is insanely relatable. What? I never said I wasn’t biased :P)

My comment: this one was hilarious! Just Lan Xichen being both absolutely exasperated and amused by wangxian’s pre-teen drama. I almost choked laughing at the line that coined the title. The author has these characters down to a T and they used their powers to attack my laugh-musccles :D

My Comment: HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS IS SO GOOD. Do you ever read a story and just marvel at the author’s mind? This is one of those. The sheer genius of giving Wei Wuxian the ability to pull entire beings into non-being! The absolute galaxy-brain idea to link the canon mythology to modern astrophysics!!! Wei Wuxian creates a motherfucking black hole in this one!!! And it’s SO well written, too! The author does not shy away from Wei Wuxian’s sharp edges and his darker side but goddamn if he is not still loveable anyway. Just GO READ THIS FIC!

My comments: This one just left me with a lot of mushy feelings. Also I adore the way the author emphasised the relationship between Lan Wangji and Bichen. And by the end, Wangxian finally figure shit out through actual open communication. Absolutely beautiful!

And I'd like to say "aww, bless him, he saved his unrequited crush all selflessly like, even though they didn't then live together as husband and wife"....but he subsequently knocked her up with a second child. :/

The ladies in MDZS tend to have a pretty shitty time, so this fic is pulling a goddamn Fury Road and scooping them up and taking them off to form their own Ye Olde Themyscira-ish Rogue Sect of ladies looking out for other ladies.

I hope you enjoy!! You asked for something swim related and my competive swimmer ass got so hyped so bless you for that. I also stalked your blog on Twitter and seen you like Free, thus this was born. I really hope you like it!! Modern AU setting! Hope you are having a happy holiday!

It was late in the afternoon, the sun was just beginning to turn the sky into beautiful shades of pink, the sky's reflection could be seen in off of the deep blue of the ocean. But all of this went unnoticed by the four men currently breaking into a wooden cabin for the Gusu boys swim team. “Guys come on hurry up!” “We’re gonna get caught, we’re gonna get caught.” “If you don’t shut the hell up we will!” “Wen Ning can you please loosen your grip on my arm” “S-sorry” “Guys hurry up so we can get out of here. ” “What was that sound?” “SHIT, Nie Huaisang. I thought you said they wouldn't be back till after sunset??” “That is because they weren't! Big brother told me they were doing long distance in open water today.” “We’re gonna get caught, we’re gonna get caught.” “Wen Ning if you don’t shut up right now I will break your legs.” “Guys the window, Go go go!” Cue four teenage boys scrambling across the wooden cabin, trying to squeeze their way out of a tiny window all at the same time. “Wei Ying get your fucking elbow out of my goddamn face” “Get your fucking face away from my elbow” “Umm guys we should try going one at a time maybe” “...”

“Shut the fuck up Nie Huaisang” They all froze as they heard the sound of voices coming from outside the door, distant, but getting closer.

“Oh my god, they’re coming, we are going to be in so much trouble” Wen Ning whimpers. “Shut the hell up,” Jiang Cheng whisper-shouted, “Wei Ying if we get caught this is your fucking fault.” “Chill guys, just hurry up and move dammit, Wen Ning you go first.” “Okay…” Wen Ning shuffles towards the window, arms reaching to grip the wooden frame and pull himself up, then he's gone. “Nie Huisang you’re next.” Nie follows right after Wen Ning, then Jiang Cheng. Wei Ying is just about to jump when the voices got really loud, Wei Ying hesitates in his surprise, then suddenly the door begins to open. “Shitttt” Wei Ying whispers to himself, fuck, fuck, fuck, Wei WuXian looks around frantically for a hiding spot, there are some beds he could hide under, a couple wardrobes, but aha! In a moment of absolute genius, he chooses to hide his 6-foot self behind a floor lamp. Perfect, no one will see him there, Wei Ying thinks to himself. From the window, the three accomplices, who are watching on, facepalmed at the idiot currently trying to make himself as unnoticeable as possible. “He is so fucking stupid” Jiang Cheng mutters with a deep scowl on his face. At the same time, the door opens, two members of the Gusu Lan Swimming team walk in; their swim bags on one arm, their towels on the other. They stop as they seem to be trying to take in what the fuck happen to their cabin. It was covered in silly string and toilet paper. Not one thing was spared. Not the beds, not the closets, even the fan was completely covered. “...” “...” “Wei Ying,” says the one with a deadpan expression. Ah haha, of course, the ones who had to come back early were the two co-captains themselves. Lan Xichen and Lan Zhan, Wei Ying winces from behind the floor lamp. The latter already suspects me! How unfair, I mean I did it, but that is beside the point, Wei Ying pouts. “Wei WuXian must have had some free time from practice today.” Lan Xichen says, looking around almost impressed. His eyes gloss over where Wei Ying is attempting to hide, but if he notices the random person in his room trying to become one with the lamp, he doesn’t let it show.

“Brother I will go find him and make him clean this up.” “That won’t be necessary, Wangji.” “Brother?” “How does a joint practice with Yungmeng team tomorrow sound?” “...” from Lan Zhan “...” from the four men who broke in. “I’m thinking a butterfly day has been long overdue” “...” “...” “Open water as well.” “... I will go make the arrangments.” “...” While they were talking Wei WuXian managed to squeeze himself out the window unnoticed. As soon as he touched the ground Jiang Cheng had his hands around Wei Ying's neck, “I WILL FUCKING END YOU” he screams, not caring in the slightest about staying quite. Nie Huaisang and Wen Ning were attempting to save Wei Ying from Jiang Cheng, but while they were unlatching Jiang Cheng's hands from around Wei Ying's throat, they couldn't help but to silently thank every diety out there that they did not get caught or else they would have joined Jiang Cheng in strangling Wei Ying. ii. The next day the Yungmeng team were all shooting nasty glares at Wei Ying as they wait for practice to start, they did not know what he did but they were sure it was his fault they now had to practice with Gusu Lan team. The Gusu were known for their insane practice routines, which were admired but from a very far distance, very far... The Qinghe Nie especially detest the days when their captain decides to have joint practices. The two captains are very close, and when they coordinate, the things they come up with put Olympic practices to shame. The most infamous being the open water fly course. It is a mile long swim to the nearest island, the entire thing must be done in complete fly. Then, they have to run a whole five miles around the island, and then swim fly back. Only three have ever been able to do the whole thing non stop. That is the two captains of Gusu and the captain of Qinghe. And now the Yungmeng team will be attempting it, along with the battle-hardened Gusu team. “I hope you fucking drown today,” said one very angry Jiang Cheng. “Awe Jiang Cheng you don’t mean it, you would be lost without me.” Jiang Cheng sneers and turns his back to Wei Ying and makes his way over to the other Yungmeng members who are still glaring over at Wei Ying. Noticing the looks being sent his way Wei Wuxian laughs out loud. He then notices one particular person standing off to the side not interacting with anyone, Wei Ying's grin gets even larger. He makes his way over to the man. “Lan zhan~” “...” “Lan Zhan, your brother is really scary, how does a person even come up with such a death-seeking practice, haha, he is really something.” Lan Zhan seemed to have heard something he didn’t like cause he just glared at Wei Ying and began to walk away. “ Awe, Don’t be like that Lan Zhan, Hey! Tell me since I have never done this course before, is it true only three people have finished? “Mhh” “Haha I bet you were one of them naturally, Lan Zhan do you think I’ll be able to finish?” “...” “Pffft Hahaha, ouch. Lan Zhan, you doubt my swimming skills? Just watch! I will not only finish, but I will be the first too!” “Mhh” “Hahaha, what does that even mean? Mhhh? Okay, Lan Zhan, I am gonna go over to my team now but if I do win you have to go to town with me okay? It will be fun so looks forward to it.” “Mhh” Wei Wuxian walked off with a grin back to his disapproving team, he grabbed the nearest teammate and draped his arm over his shoulder.

“Haha you guys can stop being so mad at me okay, we will get through this together, and even if you don’t finish I’ll win and give us some face okay? Hahaha” Lan Zhan watched the scene from afar and looked away after Wei Ying started laughing, his ears going pink, unnoticed by everyone besides his brother, who looks on with a knowing smile. iii. “Wei Ying that was amazing! You kept up with the Gusu captains the entire time!” “Ah but I wasn’t able to beat them, next time we will for sure though” “...” “neXT tiMe?” everyone who was in the hot spring thought simultaneously. “Haha don’t look so terrified guys, it wasn’t that bad!” “Says the IMer of the group, I for sure thought I was going to die,” said one Yungmeng team member. “Same! Our practices are nothing compared to that, Gusu sure has it rough.” “What was that? Did I just hear you guys say you want to have another long distance fly day tomorrow?” uh oh “...Um no captain Jiang Cheng, sorry captain Jiang Cheng…” “Pshhh hahaha go easy on them Jiang Cheng, your glare will make them piss themselves and I’d prefer not to bathe in piss water.” “This is coming from the guy who has no shame and brags when he pee’s in the pool” “...” everyone else. “Okay okay but in all seriousness though, Lan Zhan and Lan Xichen are superhuman I swear. How is it possible for a human to finish a 7-mile course in 40 minutes? There is no way they are human!” “...but didn’t you do it in 41 minutes?” everyone else in the hot springs thinks. “I have a conspiracy, they are actually descendants from Atlantis!” Wei Wuxian continues on unperturbed by all the blank-faced looks he is getting.

“Or they could be sons of Posiden, that would explain their unnatural beauty and the weird fact that their hair is always perfect and shiny with no signs of chlorine damage.” “...” “Especially that Lan Zhan. He is way too perfect to be one hundred percent human.” The men in question walked into the hot spring just as Wei Ying is finishing his sentence and they all glance over at the loud man. “Oh the Yungmeng team is here as well,” Lan Xichen says with a charming smile. “Care if we join you guys?” “Of course not! The more the merrier” Wei Ying shoots back an equally charming smile, uncaring of the awkward change in vibe around him, everyone else sighs internally, preparing themselves mentally for the second-hand embarrassment that comes along naturally with Wei Wuxian’s shamelessness. After the Gusu teams clean themselves off and enter the springs it gets quiet. Butttt not for long, “So Lan Zhan, Lan Xichen I have some questions for you guys”. Everyone sighs again, Jiang Cheng is preparing to hit Wei Wuxian in the side, but before he could. “Mhh” unexpectedly Lan Zhan is the one to respond to Wei Ying. Lan Xichen just smiles patiently. “Wellllll, we were discussing before you guys came in…” No, we weren't the Yungmeng team collectively thinks. “Are you two aliens?” “...” “No? Maybe demigods?” “...” “Half merman?” “...” “No that wouldn’t work I see you guys with no clothes on all the time and I have never seen scales, Hmm, maybe one-fourth merman…”’

“Hey, Lan Zhan do you have scales?” Wei Ying gives Lan Zhan a good once over, his eyes trailing slowly over Lan Zhan's chest. “..” “Can I look closer?” Lan Zhan's face twitches. “Shameless” Lan Xichen continues to smile. iv. Every year one team from one of the major swimming teams in China host a two-week-long boot camp. All the teams get together and share work out routines and bond. It is a great way for the swim community to have fun and improve relations all at the same time. This has been going on for many years now and most of the teams are very close, after having known each other for so long. This is especially true of Wei Ying from Yungmeng and Lan Zhan from Gusu. Most people think that they don't get along because of their opposite personalities, but actually, they have a very deep bond, one that only comes from a long shared history. “Hey, Lan Zhan! Wait up!” yells one very energetic captain of the Yunmeng team. He spotted Lan Zhan walking down the path from the shower house and yelled out to him. Lan Zhan paused for a moment in surprise, then kept on walking as if he had not heard the yell from Wei Ying in the first place. “Hahaha. Lan Zhan just walking off like that when someone yells for you if I was anyone else I would have thought you were avoiding me.” Lan Zhan says nothing in reply only giving him the barest of glances and continuing down the path. “Hey, Lan Zhan are you busy? I know I didn’t beat you and your brother in fly the other day but show me some face and go to town with me? There is this great restaurant that serves some spicy food, Jiang Cheng and I had it before we came to camp and I have been craving it since” “...” “Ahh, Lan Zhan I am not hearing a no! Come on I can’t read you like your brother but we have been here for a whole week eating the blandest food, let's go to town okay? Don’t say no cause I won’t stop bothering you till you go with me, haha” Lan Zhan just lets out a sigh, “Mhh.” V.

“Oh! Lan Zhan, look over there, let's go see what they are selling.” Wei Ying exclaims, dragging Lan Zhan over to a stand of what looks like loquats. “Hello Young gentlemen! Do you want to try some of my Loquats? They are completely fresh!” “We’ll take two, please! Here, Lan Zhan, I will pay!” Wei Ying reaches into his pocket to grab his money but Lan Zhan is already handing the woman money before he can even take it out. “Lan Zhan! Give me some face yeah? You can’t pay for everything since I asked you to come to town with me.” “Mhh” “Pfffttt Lan Zhan you’re hilarious” Wei Ying laughs out loud and pats Lan Zhan on his back. The woman who sold them the Lotus watches the scene with interest. “Oh how cute! Are you two dears on a date?” Wei Ying blushes and stammers “Wha- No No! We are friends.” “Mhh” “Lan Zhan what are you ‘Mhh-ing’ for?!” “Haha well, you two kids have fun on your 'not' date.” Wei Ying’s face goes beet red. He grabs Lan Zhan’s arm and quickly shuffles away. vi. The pair found themselves walking around the town after they finished their food at the restaurant Wei Ying was talking about before. They are currently walking along the town, hands casually brushing, Wei Ying pretends he doesn't notice. “Hahaha Lan Zhan you took all those spices like a champ! I had no idea you liked spicy food as much as I do! Even Jiang Cheng was chugging milk after he ate there last time!” “Mhh” Lan Zhan surreptitiously gets a bottle out of the bag he is conveniently carrying and takes a swing of the liquid inside while Wei Ying has his head facing the ocean. “Hey, Lan Zhan?” Wei Ying says with an unusually serious tone. “Mhh”

“Is this a date?” Lan Zhan freezes. “Cause if it is I wouldn’t mind” “...” “I uh mean, only if you want it to.. Haha…” “...” “Umm Lan Zhan?” “Lan Zhan exe has stopped working.” vii. “Hahaha, oh my, Lan Zhan, you really scared me for a second there.” “Mhh” “Ahh, Lan Zhan lets go for a swim!” Wei Ying and Lan Zhan are currently walking along the beach. It is semi-empty because the only people crazy enough for a swim in this weather are the ones back at swim camp. “Lan Zhan, you are wearing your swimsuit right?” “Mhh” “Hahaha of course! Us swimmers never go anywhere without our swimsuits.” “Mhh” Wei Ying begins to strip off his clothes, starting with his shirt, then pants, and underneath are some skin-tight speedo jammers. Lan Zhan tries to not to stare. Tries. “Haha, Lan Zhan you need to take off your clothes too.” “Mhh” Lan Zhan slowly takes his clothes off and fold them neatly, setting them carefully in his bag. Wei Ying doesn’t even bother trying to hide the fact that he is openly ogling Lan Zhan's perfect. “Ready? Let's go!” Wei Ying runs off to the ocean and dives under. Lan Zhan walks calmly after him after him. “Holy crap it’s cold haha, was it this cold yesterday during the open water? Who organizes open water in December anyway? Your brother really is something else, Lan Zhan, haha.” Lan Zhan frowns and in a moment of inspiration Wei Ying gets really close to Lan Zhan, when they are almost to chest to chest Wei Ying, suddenly wants to see Lan Zhan's usual perfect blank expression ruined just a little, so he takes advantage of the tiny room between them, and in a moment of surprise, tackles Lan Zhan in the water. Lan Zhan emerges, his hair looking as beautiful and glossy as always, but Wei Ying almost chokes on water from laughing when he notices some seaweed stuck in his hair. Unfortunately Lan Zhan is still as deadpan as always, fortunately, Lan Zhan reaches out to grab for Wei Ying. "Ahahah Lan Zhan what are you gonna do?" I have a couple suggestions Wei Ying's mind supplies.

“Ah, Lan Zhan?!” Wei Ying shouts alarmed as Lan Zhan picks Wei Ying up and then pauses staring straight at him. They make eye contact and for a second Wei Ying is sure Lan Zhan will try to kiss him, maybe, hopefully. But then- Lan Zhan launches Wei Ying into the next oncoming wave. Wei Ying splutters as he emerges from the water. “Lan Zhan! Who knew you had it in you? Such a tease, and there I was thinking I’d get my first kiss.” Wei Ying pouts, seemingly put out. Lan Zhan pauses, looks considering then moves toward Wei Ying, “Ahh Lan Zhan?” Lan Zhan leans and Wein Ying is moments close to getting his wish, but before they could get too close, “Wei Ying!” Jiang Cheng's voice came from out of nowhere, the yells broke them apart, “How come you went to town and didn’t even tell me? And you brought Lan Zhan? Fake ass best friend. You even went swimming? I’ll break your damn legs.” “Ahh Haha!! Jiang Cheng don’t be a spoilsport, Lan Zhan an I was on a date! Why would I invite you? Did you want to third wheel? Maybe in the hopes you might find someone to kiss too?” “Wei Ying! I Will fucking end you!" “AHHAHAHA Jiang Cheng you did hope you’d meet someone, didn’t you?? Ahaha Lan Zhan maybe I should have invited your brother. Don’t you think he’d be good for my own dear brother.” Wei Ying says with a cheeky grin. “You are adopted!” Jiang Cheng yells with a pink face. "Mhh." was Lan Zhan reply.

The people from the town could hear the sound of random high pitched laughter and someone yelling from the beach. No one questioned it, the swimmers who come every year are nothing new and the residents are used to the crazy shenanigans they get up to.
