On the 42nd anniversary of the Mount St. Helens disaster, a review and A+ documentaries
On the 42nd anniversary of the Mount St. Helens disaster, a review and A+ documentaries
I like to read nonfiction, and I’ll confess, there is much of it that isn’t an easy read, even if I’m riveted by the topic. Steve Olson’s Eruption: The Untold Story of Mount St. Helens, however, is an exception, and on the 42nd anniversary of that fateful 1980 day, I can’t recommend it highly enough. My copy of ERUPTION is tied with a ribbon because I have articles all stuffed inside it. It sits…

Vintage letterpress cuts and ornaments from the Springtide Press collection formed elements in a pattern created by @drawntheroad for the exhibit “Votes for Women: 100 Years & Counting”. (Like women’s suffrage, there have been delays and obstacles, but we keep working!) We’ll share more details as @deadfeminists and @washingtonhistory discuss the exhibition tomorrow. The event will be broadcast on Facebook Live. You'll find it on the Videos tab of the Washington State History Museum page, once it goes live at 7 pm PST. (Please note, the video won't appear in their list of videos until the event actually starts, so you may have to refresh the page to see it, if you get there first!) #suffragecentennial #suffrage100wa #womensequalityday https://www.instagram.com/p/CEVsO3YB_7r/?igshid=5j3hson8j4bh

When I first moved to Anacortes my office was down at this historic cannery. We enjoyed many a picnic at the end of the pier. * #experienceanacortes #anacortes360 #smalltownwa #smalltownwashington #history #historicalplace #washingtonhistory #sanjuanislands #visitskagit #canneryrow (at Anacortes, Washington)

My comic feels a bit trite next to these great strips by @dorkus_mons_likethevolcano and Robyn Jordan, but once again @seattleweekly drops a #fantastic #local #comix section this week... #seattleartist #illustration #seattlecomics #undergroundcomics #alternativecomics #indiecomics #drawcomics #comicart #cartoonist #ufo #washingtonhistory #bashback (at Push/Pull)

More like the "Ruins of Melmont" than a ghost town.  I think "Ruins" sounds more... dramatic and mysterious.  What do you think and what do you think of the video? I may return there this weekend to investigate the ruins further and check out Fairfax too.

Finally captured the funky Vandercook #24 in operation. It is hand inked and the trip/print function managed through massive bumpers on each end (see the carriage ca-chunk down as it moves to the end). Paper is fed through an angled feedboard into open-and-waiting-yet-rudimentary grippers. The freshly printed page delivers face down back on the feedboard unless you grab it. It’s a beast, but @write.253 has made great friends with Spartan and it’s a joy to see this press in use. We printed a Bootleggers’ Pangram (all the letters in the alphabet) for @washingtonhistory visitors. The Line Break Press is open for this Saturday’s train festival: come check it out. #daredevilpress #letterpress #preservationthrougheducation (at Washington State History Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6Tj1S4heJw/?igshid=1rdtrentu6bw9

Some time in the near future a record dealer at @crossroads_records is going to be wondering “who on earth spent $10 on my #KingOliver 7” reissue?!!” It was me. And I’m about to spin it at the @washingtonhistory museum #LittleBlackDress event in my favorite city of #Tacoma ❤️. #HotJazz!!!! . #nowspinning #vinyljunkie #jazz https://www.instagram.com/p/B3x4p_Shv1x/?igshid=1r6rzun35opxj
