Waltonirrisor tendringensis Mayr & Kitchener, 2024 (new genus and species)
Tumblr media
(Specimens of Waltonirrisor tendringensis [scale bars = 5 mm], from Mayr and Kitchener, 2024)
Meaning of name: Waltonirrisor = Walton-on-the-Naze Irrisor [defunct genus name for the green woodhoopoe, now in the genus Phoeniculus]; tendringensis = from Tendring
Age: Eocene (Ypresian), 54.6‒55 million years ago
Where found: London Clay Formation, Essex, U.K.
How much is known: Partial skeletons of at least three individuals and several isolated bones, together representing various limb bones, a vertebra, and a partial lower jaw.
Notes: Waltonirrisor was a close relative of hoopoes and woodhoopoes, a group of boldly-colored birds with long, curved bills. Specimens of Waltonirrisor had been previously figured in a 1998 paper, but were left unnamed at the time. Waltonirrisor was larger than most other Paleogene hoopoe-like birds, but smaller than extant hoopoes and woodhoopoes. It is the oldest hoopoe-like bird currently known.
A partial humerus (upper arm bone) from the Eocene of Germany may also belong to this genus.

This is a Victorian chapel in Walton On The Naze, Great Britain, and it's so cute and so cozy, I've never seen anything like it. It has 4bd 1ba & is listed for £390,000 / $495,532.
Tumblr media
I think that the current owner's furnishings really make it look great, but it's still a beautifully done conversion.
Tumblr media
There certainly is lots of shelving.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a very large kitchen and the cabinetry with black counters reminds me of science classrooms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The living room is large, but oh-so-cozy.
Tumblr media
Here in the central hall are stairs with a lovely railing and beams.
Tumblr media
This bedroom is spacious and has some beautifully shaped church windows.
Tumblr media
Here's a cozy bedroom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This bedroom has the mezzanine above. I have to mention that magnificent replica of what I think is the Queen Elizabeth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 4th bd is also cozy. There isn't one bd that's not inviting.
Tumblr media
There's only 1 bath for 4 bds but it's so cute.
Tumblr media
At least the toilet is separate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have to say that the mannequin in the mezzanine is a little creepy, otherwise it's nice up here. I wonder what made them use stick-on flooring, since it doesn't wear well.
Tumblr media
Here's a little private area. That's a skull on the shelf in the back. I wonder if it conveys.
Tumblr media
This is the only outdoor space they show, but even though it's small, it's nice. I can't tell if there's a yard back there.

Annakacygna vs Nasidytes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Factfiles:
Annakacygna hajimei, A. yoshiiensis
Tumblr media
Artwork by @otussketching, written by @zygodactylus
Name Meaning: Swan from Annaka (Hajime’s or of Yoshii-machi)
Time: 11.5 million years ago (Tortonian stage of the Miocene epoch, Neogene period)
Location: Haraichi Formation, Annaka, Japan
Annakacygna was dubbed during its research “the ultimate bird”, and honestly, I don’t even blame the scientists for doing so - I may have even done the same. Both large species of swan, A. hajimei was about the size of a black swan, and A. yoshiiensis was larger than even the mute swan. They were weird in so many ways it boggles the mind: they were adapted for filter feeding in the water, their wings and tails were so flexible they could form a cradle for their young on their backs like modern mute swangs, said tails and wings were probably great and flashy display structures, its head was extremely large weird looking and had a slightly spoon-like bill, they had wide and heavy vertebrae but still had long and flexible necks, it may have even been a flightless bird or at least a poor flier based on its sternum and coracoids, though its scapula is extremely strong and unlike flightless animals - more research is needed to better understand this aspect of its mobility. That said, it did have very short wing birds, weirdly curved and short among birds, with weirdly shaped finger bones coming together to create weirdly formed curved wings. Its hips were arched up, creating a dip in its back, and it had narrow leg bones, allowing for efficient movement in the water like living *grebes and loons*. So while it had this whole weird display structure with its wings and tail going on, and its robust but long neck, and that strangely boat-shaped body (what the actual f-), it was zooming through the water like a grebe or loon. It had a similar beak to living shovelers, possibly, and it could move its jaw back and forth in a seesaw like motion, not like any living swans. It could then filter food through its jaws via this motion, eating a variety of plankton through soft lamellae within its bill. It was probably very social, given its display structures, and communicated both vocally (imagine the power of those calls with that robust neck) and visually. Annakacygna also took care of its young, extensively, keeping them on their back protected in their wings, to the point that they may not have spent much time on land (like living loons and grebes). It wasn’t a deep diver, but was stable at sea while foraging on food and moving along the surface of the water, living primarily in the ocean. Found in a marine environment, Annakacygna lived with sharks, seals, many kinds of whales, and desmostylians.
Nasidytes ypresianus
Tumblr media
Artwork by @otussketching, written by @zygodactylus
Name Meaning: Ypresian Diver of Naze
Time: 55 million years ago (Ypresian stage of the Eocene epoch, Paleogene period)
Location: Walton Member, London Clay Formation, England
Nasidytes is the earliest known loon known via the fossil record, similar to other early fossil loons known from later times. It had a shorter and wider beak than living loons, and it had pleurocoels like most birds but unlike modern loons. It already had the weird wing proportions found in modern loons, and it had webbed feet similar to many water birds. Nasidytes probably wasn’t an aquatic pursuit predator, like its living relatives. Instead, it probably fed on marine invertebrates, making short foot-propelled dives for food. It lived near the coast, in a vibrant habitat filled with a wide variety of other early birds emerging right after the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. The London Clay Formation was an early tropical coastal forest, much like those found in Southeast Asia today. Some of Nasidytes’ neighbors included Danielsavis, a weird duck-screamer; diurnal raptors including the masillaraptorid Danielsraptor; early relatives of owls, trogons, paleognaths, and tropicbirds; the pseudotoothed bird Dasornis; and a wide variety of parrot-passerine relatives. Crocodilians, snakes, turtles, fish, sharks, and a few mammals also lived in this environment, including an early primate Platychoerops.

Part 2 of the OC lore dump for my second self-published picture book 256 Postcards Ago under the cut. This one is mostly about the RPG maker game I wanted to create for it!
I wanted to explore the family's backstory more in the rpgmaker game I mentioned in the previous post; Nicholas is a lonely kid so his dad makes up some friends for him to play with while he's busy at work. In the game you would pick up collectable postcards that explain the story;
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of the shops are also references to things. For example 'Marble's' is a place in the Gamecube game Tales of Symphonia and 'Charlotte' is a reference to a character from Madoka Magica. I love her cute witch design and made a shop based on her which sells toys.
Tumblr media
I also wanted to hint that Charlotte's might be where Digit originally comes from and drew some similar toy designs to him which would appear in the window. Digit is the only friend who Nicholas can actually see and he also functions as a backpack!
Tumblr media
The town in based on the English seaside location 'Walton-on-the-naze' I used to visit every summer as a child. My favourite restaurant is the building on the right in the first image and the promenade also makes an appearance during the lunch scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I planned to show a more locations of the town and was making a game with a talented artist and programmer Dejan90 but we both had a lot of real life commitments at this time and didn't get too far into making it.
Tumblr media
My plan was to have characters from all three books appear in the game as well as some original characters. The idea of the game was to tie all three stories together somehow.
Tumblr media
There would also be minigames you could play with your imaginary friends!! I think we were a little ambitious with the scope of what we wanted to do.
Tumblr media
Marina from The Midnight Chimes would also make an appearance and be able to join your party. Here's some more of the unfinished sprite work from the game;
Tumblr media
While my three picture books are not directly related I also added some visual references between the books; a lighthouse and windmill on Amelie's shelf in HL, a purple dinosaur at the playground in 256 which also shows up with Digit in The Midnight Chimes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Almost finished now!! Just like with my last book I made a little soundtrack.
The playlist for 256 Postcards Ago is here!
1) Postcards From Far Away 2) Dear Vienna 3) Town of Albano 4) Breezy 5) Point Me At Lost Islands 6) Cycling Road 7) 幸福時計 8) Dark Cave 9) The Elemental Stars

(And last thing! Reminder that you can read the book here;) Amazon paperback; http://amzn.com/1484839765 eBook; https://frayedsymphony.gumroad.com/l/JVgUp

Thank you for reading!

Day Three
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Welp, maybe not quite taking it easy! The problem is that it's fun to keep going.
Another early start after sleeping under a lil oak tree for the night, then off along NCN 150 that runs along the whole coast of the Tendring Peninsula.
A very strong headwind whilst along the coast, but through Clacton-on-Sea right around to Walton-on-the-Naze with a few tea breaks along the way, before making it around to The Naze proper by lunchtime.
Alas further round the coast itself is Hamford Water Nature Reserve, and not easily passable. So back down to Walton we go to slog around and get back to the coast by Harwich.
Riding around the rivers Stour and Orwell would be a damn long way, so took the enjoyable ferry over to Felixstowe.
And with that, we say goodbye to Essex and hello to Suffolk! It's been a good few years since I was last here and it's still looking very pretty.
4pm by the time we landed directly onto the beach at Felixstowe, with an hour before the ferry to Bawdsey Manor packed up for the day so carried on a little further to make that, and then finally time to start thinking about a place to stop for the night.
Fortune smiles though and have managed to find a beautiful campsite a bit further along, so after clocking up over 60km today I have been rewarded with a very needed shower.
Booked in for two nights here for three reasons.
First, the legs have definitely earned a bit of downtime. Much as I like getting the distances in, gotta make sure this is sustainable for the whole trip. So, some enforced R&R for them.
Second, a bit of chafing starting to make itself known so a day off the saddle will go a long way to not exacerbating it.
And third, I did slice up my feet a bit taking a dip in the sea yesterday and a proper shower has been damn useful for cleaning the last of the sea mud out of the cuts. A little time to let them knit back together seems prudent!
And with that, I am looking forward to a bit of a lie in after the last two 6am starts, so I'm going to get my head down and catch you all in a couple of days!

Clearing the Path: The Importance of Drain Unblocking in Brightlingsea
Introduction
A smooth-functioning drainage system is essential for the overall well-being and hygiene of any property. However, blockages can occur over time due to various factors, leading to disruptions and potential health hazards. In a picturesque town like Brightlingsea, maintaining clear and unobstructed drains is crucial. This article delves into the significance of drain unblocking in Brightlingsea and how professional services play a pivotal role in ensuring a healthy and efficient drainage system.
Preventing Health Hazards
Blocked drains can result in stagnant water accumulation, which becomes a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, mold, and other pathogens. These health hazards can negatively impact both residents and the environment. Drain unblocking helps prevent these health risks by allowing water to flow freely and preventing waterborne diseases.
Avoiding Property Damage
Blocked drains can lead to water backup, causing damage to your property's interiors and foundations. The excess moisture can weaken walls, floors, and structural elements, potentially leading to costly repairs. Timely drain unblocking safeguards your property from water-related damages and preserves its structural integrity.
Ensuring Proper Hygiene
Blocked drains often emit foul odors due to the accumulation of debris and stagnant water. These odors can permeate your living spaces, affecting indoor air quality and overall hygiene. Drain unblocking eliminates the source of these odors, creating a clean and fresh environment.
Preserving the Environment
In a town like Brightlingsea, surrounded by natural beauty, environmental preservation is crucial. Blocked drains can lead to pollution of nearby water bodies if wastewater isn't able to flow properly. Professional drain unblocking prevents environmental contamination and helps maintain the town's pristine surroundings.
Maintaining Functional Drains
Regular drain unblocking is essential to keep your drainage system functioning optimally. Hair, grease, soap scum, and debris can accumulate over time, leading to blockages. Professional drain unblocking clears these obstructions, allowing wastewater to flow freely and preventing further clogs.
Professional Expertise
DIY methods often provide temporary relief but may not address the root cause of the blockage. Professional drain unblocking services in Brightlingsea utilize advanced tools and techniques to locate and clear blockages effectively. Their expertise ensures a thorough and lasting solution.
Preventing Future Issues
Professional drain unblocking isn't just about removing existing blockages; it's also about preventing future problems. Drain experts can identify underlying issues that contribute to blockages, such as damaged pipes or tree root intrusion. By addressing these issues proactively, they prevent recurring blockages.
Conclusion
Maintaining clear and unobstructed drains is vital for the health, hygiene, and longevity of your property in Brightlingsea. Professional drain unblocking services offer timely solutions that not only address current blockages but also prevent potential hazards in the future. By preserving indoor air quality, preventing property damage, and contributing to environmental conservation, drain unblocking professionals play a crucial role in ensuring a clean and functioning drainage system. With their expertise, the path to a healthy and efficient drainage system remains clear, allowing residents to enjoy the beauty of Brightlingsea without the worries of blocked drains.

Pristineanis major Mayr & Kitchener, 2024 (new species)
Tumblr media
(Type tarsometatarsus [fused ankle and foot bones] of Pristineanis major [scale bar = 5 mm], from Mayr and Kitchener, 2024)
Meaning of name: major = larger [in Latin]
Age: Eocene (Ypresian), 54.6‒55 million years ago
Where found: London Clay Formation, Essex, U.K.
How much is known: A left tarsometatarsus (fused ankle and foot bones).
Notes: P. major appears to have been closely related to piciforms, a group of birds that includes woodpeckers and toucans. Unlike in modern piciforms, the outermost toe on each foot of P. major was probably not fully reversed, but could be rotated into a backward-pointing position. As its name suggests, P. major was larger than the other known species of Pristineanis, P. minor (the type species, also from the London Clay Formation) and P. kistneri (from the Eocene of the western United States, formerly classified in the genus "Neanis").
