in the latest xmen 97 episode there’s a sequence of a giant jean swallowing madelyne and i was like omg who hired wellnoe to work on this show….
lmao thank you for thinking of me...that does sound like a familiar theme... i have in fact drawn several giant jeans in the last bit though none of them are swallowing people

I don't have too many thoughts, but I think a neat thing for Jean's hellfire look could possibly be a simple green/red dress but she uses her TK/Physic powers to kinda...create an outfit around her?? So it ends up becoming a huge pink ball gown that kinda symbolises Jean's sheer presence, esp with the mental energy it takes to keep such a large dress going for a whole night
And idk WHAT,,,but I like the idea of Maddy having a Cinderella based/themed outfit akin to the idea of who she Was and the outfit changes over the night to represent who she is now and her self autonomy
i think your jean idea is a fun one!

emma/maddy just in general is sooo enriching to me because the absolute dyke drama of it all is so strong
see the thing is i have previously only considered emma/maddy in an extensive au co-created with @boo-cool-robot! but thinking about emma/maddy in other contexts is!!
there is something there that is so interesting to me in terms of like. their mutual attempts to gain power/agency and the ways that fucked them up and over...its not perfectly similar but there's a reflection there

Hello!! Just wanna say i love your art sm and i was wondering what art program you use and what brushes ^_^ !!
i use procreate! and a variety of brushes. for ex:
Tumblr media
[id in ALT]
ink bleed and thylacine are both default procreate brushes you can find in in the inking section. stamp 2 is from a true grit stamp pack. the rest are brushes i modified, either by following tutorials or fucking around to get an effect i wanted.
wet ink is a modified version of a modified version of gesinski ink, a default procreate brush. it is the brush i use for sketching, lining, and coloring.

heyyyy do you have any comic recs for rachel summers?
hmm not off the top of my head!
i've mostly read rachel in uncanny x-men and excalibur. in general i really like claremont's excalibur, and i think its an interesting step for rachel after her introduction in uncanny. the days of future present storyline (which spans a couple of comics and happens during this time) is pretty influential to how i think about rachel, bc that's where jean meets rachel and immediately fucks it up. which i really love as a part of their relationship going forward.
excalibur #52 is almost more a jean issue than a rachel issue, but its an interesting look at rachel's connection to the phoenix.
in general though i think following rachel from her introduction in uncanny into excalibur is a good move.

Wrt my previous message, which non bird type animals could you see Jean, Maddie, Hope, etc having either as pets, superpets or companions ?
agh this is so hard for me bc i just associate them with birds so strongly... i really don't know anything about hope, so i have no real idea of what would suit her.
i think giving maddy a fun little fantasy critter could be fun! you don't want to edge into lockheed's territory, so not a dragon, but something appropriately winged and demon-ish. maybe a fantasy bat.
i would give jean hermit crabs. i think you could do a fun metaphor with phoenix? like her getting too big for her metaphorical shell as she becomes phoenix, or whatever, and jean reflecting on that. also they're gregarious and need friends :) like jean :)
and i am touched by the image of rachel arriving at xaviers and briefly taking care of her mom's hermit crabs that have become a group pet as a reflection of the x-men's love and care for jean? or on krakoa, rachel briefly stopping in to see her mom's hermit crabs while at an excruciating summers family dinner where she feels adrift and ill-at-ease.
anyway. i think that would be fun.

do you have any thoughts on mystique as a character?
my thoughts are that i am fond of her and like when she shows up! I think she can be used as this kind of fun counterpoint to xavier and magneto and the people who align themselves really closely with either. like. in a lot of the stuff i've read anyway, mystique is not about these big ideological stands. she's about protection for her and hers (a recurring theme w fun x-antagonists), and i think that makes her a very mutable character. her allegiances are very reactive, which means you can justify a lot with an interesting scenario. (i also think this is fun for her kids: division or conflict between them is not just personal, but ideological bc of how they align themselves)
i am also fond of her and destiny, they're very sweet, and i like the way they both are and aren't on the same page a lot of the time? not just bc destiny can see the future, but bc destiny seems to have some priorities, some things she's invested in, that mystique isn't necessarily privy to. its fun! and something mystique clearly feels keenly! i like it!

hi! I love your art so much?? you’ve really reignited a love for the x-men that I haven’t had since I was a kid <3 I wanted to ask if you had any advice for making comics? have a nice day!!
ah!!! ty!
when i make comics on my own (most of the single page stuff i post on here) i have a different process than when i make comics with other people. i usually start with a couple of strong visuals i have in mind, then i’ll break down what i want to be conveyed by the paneling (basically: what are the main beats i want to hit?), and then i finally do dialogue. i sometimes put in placeholder dialogue to remind me of information that absolutely has to be conveyed in the layouts/pencils stage, but most dialogue only gets added in after a page is completely done, colors and all. this is the most intuitive way to do comics for me, and i think that’s my first piece of advice, which is find a workflow that makes sense for how your brain conceives of scenes. anyway bc thats my process all of my advice is basically about drawing comics.
Tumblr media
(this is the 'coming up with visuals' stage for a comic i'm working on currently. you can see that i'm basically just throwing anything at the wall to see if it works, and leaving a couple words/notes for myself so i know whats going on. its not even really a layout, the panels are not arranged how they would be on a final page.)
my other piece of advice is to pick apart paneling and comics you love? don’t just redraw them (though that can help too), but study what the paneling and composition conveys, and how that accentuates the story (which it often does!). i’ve done this w watchmen, a couple of moon knight runs, and some x-stuff, and i find it really helps me learn a lot about pacing, how time works, and how to economically convey information (bc you have a lot less room on a page than you think!). as a part of that: an exercise i think is a lot of fun/really helpful is to take pages/scenes you like and recompose them. use different paneling to convey the same scene and see how the meaning changes! do it intentionally, planning on pulling focus to something the original scene slides by. you can do this with your own stuff too:
Tumblr media
(this is me picking apart a redraw i wanted to do of a comic i posted on here a couple of years ago. first i redrew the comic in the left corner so i could see the composition, then i made notes to myself about what the original comic was supposed to be about, and what i wanted to add to it to improve it. sorry for how blurry it is, the pencil smudged.)
here’s some rapid fire stuff i like to keep in mind while making comics: time does not exist in comics the way it exists in movies or in prose. the gutter? anything can happen there. it is potentially literally any amount of time. its up to you to convey via panel content and composition how much time has passed (which can be very little!) same deal with space. things happen in between panels, and people move, but also panels overlap, or squish, or disregard scenery. that said! this has to be done intentionally. how panels are organized, their size, their relationship to one another, all convey information to your reader. my point is the sky's the limit here. so yknow. have fun w it.
finally i think you just need to do it a lot. i have a ton of comic layouts or pencils that i never posted bc they honestly just aren’t that competent, but i learned nevertheless. there’s other stuff that never made it past the layout or sketch stage bc i was just doing it to practice, so there was never any need to ink or color it. making comics like any other drawing is about continuously assessing intention and communication.
hope that was helpful in some way!! i like making comics a lot, and i have a lot of fun thinking about paneling and the like. i hope you have fun making comics too <3
