Deltarune Halloween Prompts Day 16: Free Day!

"None of these work!" Sweet tossed the box of rubber Halloween masks aside, his speaker squinting in disgust.

"Why not?" Digging through the box again, Cap'n pulled out one of the ones Sweet had rejected most vehemently, holding it up to his face. Notably, it had two eyes, rendering him blind. "I really think werewolf suits you! You got the volume for the whole city to hear your howlin'!"

Sweet slapped the mask away. "I'm not gonna be a werewolf!"

"Then how about..." With a giddy smile, K_K held up a round, child-size bee suit.

"I love it K_K, but I want you to take a close look at me, and then the costume. Tell me when you see the problem."

"...You don't like bees?"

"No! For one, that costume's like two sizes too small for me, and for another..." Holding his speaker in his hands, Sweet sighed deeply.

When the other two found out that he'd never actually gone trick-or-treating as a child, that his parents forbade it as "silly" and "a waste of time better spent practicing your piano scales," Cap'n and K_K were aghast. They didn't care if he was two or twenty, they were going to share what they considered the absolute best part of the holiday with him, which Sweet didn't mind, the free candy part did sound nice. But, the costume part, he did mind, least of all finding one that actually suited him.

"It's just not gonna work, okay? None of these are made for...for people like me!"

"For speakers?"

K_K tilted their head to the side, still confused, but thankfully Cap'n finally seemed to catch onto the thing Sweet hesitated to say out loud. "Yo, we can get 'em altered to fit that box ya call your body! Just like all the rest of your clothes!"

"Cap..." Flopping down onto the couch in defeat, Sweet used his foot to nudge the box of masks and other Halloween costume paraphernalia closer. "I'm just not...built for costumes. I mean, look at all these masks! They've all got two eye holes, so I'm screwed..."

"So, we just find a costume that doesn't include a mask. You got this, Sweet!"

Cap'n snatched the speaker's hand and pulled him back up, leading him to the mirror they'd set up in the corner. Taking a few seconds to study Sweet's body a bit more, he dashed into the bedroom, pulling out a sports jersey he had from the closet, as well as a matching cap and an old glove and bat from their piles of scrap. He held it all up to Sweet with a proud grin. "Vwa-la! Baseball player Sweet! I'd say it's a hit, wouldn't you?"

"I just look like a box, dressed up like a baseball player." Resisting the urge to chuckle at the cheesy pun, Sweet shoved him aside, as well as the costume, but Cap'n wasn't deterred, diving right back into the scrap piles and the closet for another look.

"Alright, how's this one?" Forming a mess of teal-coated wires into a pair of twintails on Sweet's head, he held up a sailor shirt and one of Sweet's own miniskirts, both already pre-tailored to fit his body perfectly. "Idol Sweet! That one with the blue hair's your favorite, right?"

"No! I mean, yes, she's the best, but no, I'm not dressing up as her!" Once again Sweet shoved the costume away. "I just look like a box, dressed up as a virtual idol!"

"Damn it, Sweet, you gotta work with me here!" Exasperated, Cap'n just cut a big eye hole into a spare sheet, draping it over him. "Maybe the classic ghost look?"

Throwing it off, Sweet growled, "I just look like a box in a sheet!"

While Cap'n went back to the metaphorical drawing board, K_K decided to make a contibution of their own, holding up a Sweet-sized car costume they'd made out of cardboard boxes, which got rejected before they'd even had a chance to have Sweet try it on.

"Look, K_K, I really hate to say this, but...I think that's the worst idea of them all."

"Sweet," Cap'n started, reaching up to console the disappointed CD player, "is it that ya don't like how you look in any of these costumes, or ya just don't like how you look, period?"

Sweet just scoffed. "What kind of a question is that?! If I didn't like how I look, you think I'd be goin' on stage with my bare speaker hanging out like this?"

"Yeah, but like...ya keep sayin' you just look like a box." He stepped into the mirror's reflection behind Sweet, hands gripping the speaker's case in as reassuring a manner as he could muster. "Sweet, most of gettin' dressed up's the energy you put into it! If ya keep seein' yourself as a box, well, you're just gonna be a box. But usually, you don't see a box, do ya? You see Sweet."

"Yeah..." He sighed. "I guess it is a little silly, huh? I guess...I just wanted to see something else for once, since it's supposed to be a costume and all."

"So see the costume! It doesn't gotta be perfect, long as you got the vibes!" Reaching back down into the box, Cap'n pulled out a simple pair of wolf ears and a tail, taping them onto Sweet's case. "Still think you'd rock the werewolf look, by the way. So, whaddaya think?"

"It's, well..." Like Cap'n said, Sweet tried to look beyond his own boxy features, and the lack of a mask, testing it by clawing the air and narrowing his speaker into a snarl. It was a start, and with Cap'n's and K_K's help Sweet could make the costume work. "I...kinda like it. Needs a little bit more work, though..."

"Yeah, ya still just look like Sweet in ears and a tail. I know we got some fake fur and gloves here somewhere..."

Just a little something I’m working on!

My music-writing process usually begins by recording a voice memo while I improvise a tune on the piano. I use that as an audio reference while I write the sheet music in Finale, where I apply orchestration, variations, and dynamics and refine the theme a bit.

The final product of my music is just the Finale Garritan virtual instrument playback, lightly mixed and mastered in Cubase.

I’m hoping to open some music commissions soon, I’m just working out the pricing sheets and building up a sample library for the different offerings!

Nina: So how's school going for you Hermia, your in your last year right? Hermia: School is going well as usual, one of my paintings is going to be displayed in the school gallery. Alex: Its a huge honor, and the piece is beautiful. Hermia: Almost as beautiful as your music. Nick: * whispering* groooossss

Nina: I didn't know you where a painter, everyone but myself is so creatively gifted. Hermia: I can paint but I am an absolute klutz with instruments, my brother and sister had to beg me to leave our poor piano alone. Nina: I tried playing the drums for a little while as a kid, it was so silly. Hermia knew Alex's step mom was more of a trophy wife than anything else, but she seemed like a nice lady. Easy to get along with, and very much not what she expected. The woman seemed to always be in bright pinks or white whenever she saw her, unlike all the black the men in the family wore.

Mortimer: How's your grandfather doing these days Hermia? Hermia: Oh, he's in the middle of a family crisis like always. Its really not as serious as he thinks it is either. Mortimer: I see, well you do have quite a large family. Hermia: Massive, my immediate family is already big enough, I can't even mention my more distant families and cousins without breaking out a cheat sheet.

Alex: Our family won't be small at the rate Cassandra is going. Hermia: Some of the other branches of the family have virtually no drama compared to ours. I swear its like they just like having something to be upset about. Nina: Some people are just naturally more dramatic, I don't know your family but I'm sure they are good people. Mortimer: Consort is an upstanding man, and his daughters all highly educated successful women.

Nina: Lots of women in the family? Sounds like the right place for drama, my sister and I always looked forward to it too. Alex: I for one am glad Cassandra couldn't care less about drama, no thank you.
