Thursday, March 23: Vio-Lence, “Kill on Command”

Sean Killian was consistently labeled the worst vocalist in thrash, which was really saying something. But while the Vio-Lence frontman could hardly be called a good singer (or a singer at all, really), he wasn’t really dramatically worse than a lot of his peers- if we were really being honest, Mark Osegueda’s whine was every bit as annoying back in the day.  So while Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel were rightfully recognized as the band’s strongest assets, Killian’s bleating on “Kill on Command” didn’t really bring things down.  The blunt force of the vocals actually complemented the relentless charge of the music and added to the general sense of obliteration.  This wasn’t a masterpiece by any stretch, and Vio-Lence was inherently a third-tier thrash act at best, but “Kill on Command” worked within the context of its time and illustrated that Flynn and Demmel were a strong guitar tandem.
