I made Queen Anne’s Lace pendant that I haven’t done in ages using some new techniques and tricks that I’ve developed in the past few years. About the flowers on it: There is a Legend that Queen Anne, the wife of King James I, was challenged by her friends to create lace as beautiful as a flower and this flower is the result, making it a symbol of love and devotion. Also called Wild Carrot (since Queen Anne’s Lace is the wild progenitor of today’s carrot), Bishop’s Lace or Bird’s Nest (for the nest-like appearance of the bright white and rounded flower in full bloom). One-of-a-kind jewelry French jet cut glass beads are one of my favorite elements. I especially like Victorian French jets, so I collect them. These beads were tightly sewn on a piece of Victorian dress I unraveled myself. When I pulled the thread to loosen the beads, the beads made a faint sound and fell off one by one. These beads are all different cuts and sizes. Yet another example of Victorian mourning jewelry, there isn't one single story as to how the eye portrait pieces came into fashion, but each story out there tends to point to King George IV and his wife in secret, Mrs. Fitzherbert. One of their two magnificent portrait pendants was sold last month at auction (the other is buried with the former King). *Coming soon* Circa 1890's, a nicely preserved matching set of flashy faceted 'French' Jet earrings and brooch (which could perhaps be worn as a necklace as it has two loops to the back by which a chain could be attached. Of hand faceted black glass, it would have involved hours of work to create each piece which would likely have formed part of a matching suite of immensely fashionable Jet jewels. Pieces such as this are a scarce find nowadays as so often they have broken over the years since they were made. The earrings measure just over an inch across and 1.5 inches from the top of the wires.
