vertical filming and how it impacts a movie scene (kinda).
idk if anyone has seen those vids of people taking movie scenes and making them look like they filmed vertically but...... i need to talk about it rq.
fair warning: this is quite a bit of rambling and absolutely no correct use of terminology. also, this will be all lowercase as i do not have the patience to capitalize everything. thank you for reading <3
to get this out of the way, they're all unfortunately made by ai, but fuck is it beautiful and i want to look into what makes it seem so much more intimate and human.
so.... not really sure how to start this, but changing scenes to a vertical frame makes it seem-- not immersive, but familiar. these days we see things through our phones; this isn't a negative thing, the world is changing so we change too. we see all these moments in the shape of a phone screen. face time, pictures with friends and family, all these captured moments in time that we're so fond of. with these vertical movie scenes, seeing something suddenly changed to something we're familiar with will naturally make it seem more appealing and almost intimate.
it's like it's being filmed on a phone. like you were right there when it happened. like you experienced it yourself. you're closer than you ever could have been before . it gives the scenes more meaning and brings us closer to the characters and what they're feeling (even if they're farther away).
speaking of farther away, this can also be used to isolate a character in a way that's unable to be done with normal screen dimensions. watching a character from so far is different than a normal isolation. we're there, still there in that intimate familiarity but we can't reach them. it brings you to a position where you can see them and feel them but you can't quite grasp any understanding.
it's so fascinating how the simple changing of a screen can create such different emotions that you feel closer to the character than you would have before.
i'm not saying movies should start being produced this way but... i think it's something that should be explored. this obviously doesn't work with all scenes, but in the ones with the characters just... living? it's everything.
as much as i hate to promote ai (pssst, if you know of any artists who do this kinda thing promote them please!!!) i linked some of the vids i'm referencing below if you'd like to check them out :]

With a concentration of painters, sculptors, writers, photographers, poets, performers, immigrants, beatniks, homosexuals, communists, devil worshipers, and uncategorized eccentrics, San Francisco had tolerance for everything except people from Los Angeles. -- Mark A.
